thanks for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm gia vang. >> it's not just air show enthusiast whose are missing out, thom jensen explains how the weather may have hurt business for nearby restaurants this weekend. >> reporter: i talked to the head of the golden gate restaurant association and she told me at her two restaurants it's down 9% to 10% for dinner business. she doesn't think it's the sign of the economy but the cold weather that's keeping people away, especially at night, too cold for a lot of people to eat in these parklets. it would be wrong to see the 2022 fleet week in san francisco was a bust. big crowds of visitors stretched the entire length of the embarcadero this afternoon and most restaurants and shops appeared to be busy. but those hoping to see the blue angels only got to see a few

opening acts. >> a little bit disappointed. >> reporter: when thinking fog refused to lift, officials and the blue angels called off the main show. pilots couldn't see important landmarks that they need to use for their choreography. >> it was too thick. we couldn't see the top of the golden gate bridge, which everyone in the city knows where it is, and it's very high. unfortunately, if you can't see the top of the bridge, you're flying in a very dangerous situation. >> reporter: the air shows attract 1 million visitors annually before the pandemic. but it wasn't just fog. even in the afternoon, most visitors were bundled up. and cool weather may have caused some folks to stay home. >> i thought that the crowds were slightly down. but the enthusiasm was great. >> this is the end of the season. this is supposed to be the big bang, you know? the big final bang, and it just

kind of went out with a little, you know, whimper. >> reporter: lunch crowds seemed a little better today and they hope to have final numbers soon that show how the dining industry as a whole did their week. thom jensen, nbc bay area news. so our meteorologist is in for rob mayeda tonight. >> the reason all that happened, you can see it right here. it's still going on. >> live look right there. and you know what, we have a short wave that was influencing. but when i was looking at the model runs, this is what it looks like right now at the golden gate bridge. notice down below, a little bit clear, but unfortunately, the fog would come in and make its exit. i think that's where the safety concern was, that it would start to clear out for a moment, but then within a few moment it is would move back in. speaking of the fog we still

have areas of fog into novato, half moon bay, overnight lows will dip into the 50s, and yes, we are expecting to keep the influence of that marine layer into your early morning hours which means impacts to your commute. limited visibility. we've seen visibility to less than a quarter of mile. and leave extra space between you and the car in front of you. san jose's overnight lows in the 60s. we'll wake up in the 50s, and then we do have a bit of a change going into the workweek. i will write down all of those details and what to expect. we are monitoring wind that is expecting to kick up heading into tuesday and wednesday and a slight cooldown, i'll tell you exactly where in my full forecast. new tonight, san francisco firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that burned five homes in the silver terrace neighborhood.

it broke out and two homes had major damage. the red cross, here's the most important thing, is helping 15 people who were displaced. the video was shared by a neighbor. it was contained in about an hour. new video overnight from oakland, where a sideshow turned violent. happened about 3:00 this morning on 42nd avenue. it stretch add few blocks from foothill to international. officers say they arrived to find about 50 cars. shots broke out. several people were arrested. cars were towed. citations were given out, but we're waiting to hear from police exactly how many. our investigative unit took a look at how sideshows may be putting your safety at risk even if you're not a spectator.

candice nguyen has a full report on our website. head to nbcbayarea.com/investigations. police are investigate ago hit-and-run crash that killed a homeless man. the man was riding a bicycle outside the happy hollow park and zoo when police say he was hit by two different cars. one fled and one stayed on the scene. a new covid subvariant has arrived in the bay area. marianne favro spoke with our infectious disease expert about why some scientists are calling it concerning. >> reporter: one case of the new covid subvariant known as ba.2.75.2 has been detected in the bay area by the clinical vie roll ji lab.

>> it's one of the most immune-invasive variants. >> reporter: it looks different, which means anti-bodies we have from getting a vaccine or from having covid may not be able to recognize it and ward off infection. but ucsf infectious disease specialist dr. peter chin hong says despite that concern, common anti-virals used to fight covid, including paxlovid will still be effective. >> it just shuts down the mechanism that makes these vrus particles. that's why it doesn't matter which spike protein you have. all the anti-virals will work. >> reporter: while there is a lull in covid cases now, he recommends that you get a booster shot soon to protect against getting a severe case of covid that could send to you the

hospital. >> that's covid, but there's a new warning about flu season and why doctors think it could be especially bad this year. kids are back in school, adults are returning to the office. as covid restrictions ease, flu cases are on the rise. one city in alabama reports 250 students out sick. in new york, cases are already widespread. the cdc says nationwide, cases are 13 times higher now than they were this time last year. one of the reasons, many have stopped wearing masks, but this year there's a new stronger type of flu vaccine. so the high-dose shots are particularly recommended for those 65 and above. it gives the immune system response that can help fight off the flu. seniors should ask for that specifically. >> doctors say it's safe to get flu shots and covid boosters all

at the same time. it has been five years since the tubbs fire burned wineries. in 2017, flames burned the winery to the ground. they were able to reopen in december 2019 before covid hit. they say they've been through a lot in the last few years. >> i haven't had a lot of time to reflect on, you know, kind of what we went through in the rebuilding process. we want to thank the community for their support of us and giving recognition for how resilient they've been, how quickly we've rebuilt and what a bright future we have. >> reporter: today the owners organized an event to commemorate the start of the tubbs fire. local and state leaders was there. one says although the fire was devastating and deadly, it

helped the community learn to better prepare for disasters. >> we've learned from our mistakes as a community and about, you know, how to deal with this, like getting out early warning signs, you know, communication to the community. you know. two years after the tubbs fire we had another big fire called the kincaid fire here in sonoma county, everybody was pretty sure we were going to lose parts of windsor and healdsburg. a lot was saved mostly because of early warning. >> reporter: the only part of the winery that didn't burn was the sculpture garden and most of the vines survived. they opened for business and haven't been able to rebuild their production facility and are still making wine off site and are hoping to break ground on a new production facility next year. >> we're excited about what the future holds for us, and, you

know, i feel like it's a turning point for our community, too. and i'm proud of our community. i really feel like because we have a common, the common act of the fire, you know, really made our community a lot stronger. >> you remember the two other wildfires tore through wine country in october 2017. the atlas fire, and between the three fires, more than 7100 structures were destroyed. and you and i were both covering the tubbs fire when that happened. >> didn't know each other at the time. five years ago this weekend. i couldn't believe how that fire, the wind had to be like a blowtorch. that's no exaggeration. it jumped across highway 101. >> i remember going there and thinking oh, my gosh, you can count the homes there by the chimneys. >> that's the only thing left standing. the rest was ash. >> we're happy that 90% of the homes have been rebuilt.

>> and lessons learn interested that fire. protests over the death of a young iranian woman continued in the bay area. hundreds rallied carrying signs, showing solidarity with protests in iran. protests sparked after mahsa amini died in custody for not wearing her head scarf properly. among those at the demonstration, scott wiener, some people in san francisco say they will keep showing up to lift voices of people in iran. >> they don't see any future living in iran. so they're willing to give it all in order to become free. and that's what we're doing here. this is a message that we're sending to the world. and we'll do it as many times until the people in iran, anyone is free. >> they talk about regime change in iran. a few miles away, a

different kind of gathering. people were in the city's north beach neighborhood celebrating italian heritage. today's parade started near fisherman's wharf. the community celebrated with music, classic cars, floats, performances and representation from local businesses. we caught up with one attendee who said it felt like home. >> very nice. very interesting, and it reminds me of home, actually. i'm from naples. it's my first time in san francisco. and i think this is very cool. >> always good feeling. this year marked the parade's 154th year. the longest continuously-running italian heritage parade in the united states. >> woman's from naples, reminds her of home. that's a good job. the police chief was there and tweeted out these photoses and

said it was an honor to meet the consul general of italy. this was at an arcade bar called the detour. they were playing bingo, winners took home a number of prizes, plus, they got to see the niners beat the panthers. so everyone went home a winner. anthony flores will have highlights from today's game coming up in sports. a toddler back at home safely after being kidnapped from his mother's home. a quick-thinking bus driver helped and it's all caught on camera. election day is just a month away. the important days this week you need to know about. >> mild temperatures right now. how will this impact your mornin commute? g

a pair of michigan bus drivers are being hailed as heroes after safely returning a 2-year-old to his mother. a frantic moment caught on camera. last week on a school bus. you can see a witness and the mother panicking, asking the bus driver for help. a woman's car was just stole within the toddler inside. the bus driver immediately called 911 and told other bus drivers to be on the lookout. soon another bus driver spotted the missing child. >> when she went by the students, the baby, she kind of stopped, the baby looks little, but, okay. maybe a parent was nearby. it wasn't one of her own students. as soon as she found out what he was doing, he was like, that's it.

>> the video shows the bus driver going up to help. the child walk away, but she holds her arm out to show him that he was safe. two drivers collided at fox worthy and amanda drive. the driver crashed through some bushes and hit side of a house before coming to a stop. fortunately, no one was hurt and there was no serious damage. an east bay neighborhood is on edge after a deadly shooting in a parking lot. the shooting happened just before midnight last night on belmont lane near buchanan road. the parking lot is for nearby condos. officers had found a man who had been shot and died at the scene. they are working to identify a suspect or suspects. jurors in the kristin smart murder trial will return on thursday in hopes of reaching a verdict. they will decide whether paul

flores is guilty of smart's murder and whether his father ruben helped cover it up. she disappeared in may of 1996. her body has yet to be found, but multiple witnesses say paul flores was the last person to be seen with her. the cases were handed to the juries last week. if convicted he faces 25 years to life and ruben a maximum sentence of three years. jury selection happens tomorrow for harvey weinstein. he is already serving a 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault in new york. but now he's facing trial for different allegations in los angeles, including several that prosecutor the say happened during oscar week in 2013. >> this day is long overdue for mr. weinstein to appear in a los angeles county courtroom on these very serious charges against him. >> weinstein has been indicted on four counts of rape and

several other sexual assault cases. the #metoo movement created meaningful and lasting change. the movement began five years ago. a recent poll found 70% of americans think workplace harassers and abusers are more likely to be held accountable today than in 2017. 62% brief more victims are more likely to be believed. they found the findings across demographic groups and political parties. the countdown to midterm elections are on. tomorrow ballots will be mailed out to those in contra costa county. voters can expect to get them in the coming days in mail. in san francisco in-person voting starts in some tsday. more polling options will open

runners who hopes this victory leads to bigger races in the future. >> i mean, my dream would be to represent canada on the world stage. >> my goal is to represent canada at the olympics and in paris. it will be hard to do, but i've been at this sport for a long time. it's given me amazing opportunities. i'm 30 years old, getting married this week, still loving it and chasing the dream. >> half marathon is 13 miles, one hour and two minutes. can you do the math on that one. >> i can do the math but not the running. 40,000 people raced in chicago's marathon. a runner from kenya finishes 14 seconds shy of the women's world record and an american runner did break a record. can you see emily sisson. that is a lot, nice job.

members of the tampa bay buccaneers and atlanta falcons took time before today's game to help those hit hard by hurricane ian. they are partnering with the red cross to build comfort care kitts and childcare packages. they dropped them off at a church in sarasota, florida. right now it's used as a shelter for those without homes after the hurricane. >> you can make an impact and bring awareness. that's what we're here for. >> long road ahead. red cross says recovery from hurricane ian will take months if not years. a fort myers woman gave up on ever seeing her wedding ring again. ashley lost her wedding ring outside their home. they searched for two days without a sight of the ring.

after the hurricane they went out to clean up. 150 mile winds left massive piles of trees and brush. her husband was cleaning the pile right next to the garage door when he -- >> are you kidding me? >> found that ring! she took it as a sign of hope for her community. >> that is a fantastic story. the chances you would think would be non-existent. >> carl the fog kind of put the kibosh on the finale to fleet week. what do you do? >> it was rough. it would back off, and you'd be like oh, we're getting some clearing, and then it would move in. we will get to enjoy a couple more days of the fog, that's if you like it. i understand if you're over it. let's get right to this shot of the golden gate bridge. you saw the fog earlier, and we do have some areas of some pretty dense fog up through

novato. san francisco right now 57 degrees. it's starting to move in through areas like livermore, and we'll see this become a little more widespread through the early morning hours. we're running a few degrees cooler. here's the timing of the morning fog. overnight, notice by 11:00, all the way to half moon bay, creeping in through palo alto, san jose, morgan hill, gilroy. if i push this time stamp forward to about 6:30, in time for your morning commute, the fog still lingers. it really isn't until 12:00, 1:00 that we start to get the clearing in inland areas. notice around san francisco and the coastline the fog will remain pretty steady. into tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m., still expecting to see 50s, but by the afternoon, it's

going to be another day where we see above-normal temperatures at least for inland areas. by 12:00, 70s in brentwood. and we'll top out in the mid-80s. no 90s on the map. just a few degrees cooler, compared to those, you know, really hot 90s last week. we had high pressure. and as of right now. over the next several days, no rain in sight. we had some systems that we were monitoring. looks like that's going to stay to our north. what we're mainly going to see is the continued fog but also the winds will start to pick up. heading into tuesday and wednesday. here's a closer look at your inland seven-day forecast. hope you start planning out your weekend ahead. by tuesday and wednesday we'll dip down into the low 80s. that drops us down as much as ten degrees. thursday and friday we remain in the 80s. in san francisco we will remain in the 60s, and yes, early

this week nasa is set to give an update on a cosmic smashup watched around the

world. they successfully crashed a dart spacecraft into an asteroid. it could one day be used to protect earth from collisions. it could be a month before we know whether the trajectory actually changed. exciting. low water levels in lakes and reservoirs continue to solve and reveal mysteries. this picture of a wreck was tweeted out that appeared in low water in shasta lake. its markings confirm it was assigned to the "uss monrovia." it was built during world war ii and served as general patton's headquarters in 1943. it was in use for decades after the war, being sold for scrap metal. it is the latest in the string

of water levels receding. back in april a body was found in a barrel in lake mead, believing the person died more than 40 years ago. in august, the body of a man missing for 20 years also was discovered in lake mead. studying the ocean can be challenging, so scientists decided to build their own. >> reporter: there is literally an ocean of information behind me. imagine how much we could learn if we could bottle all that up and study it? thanks to a new machine in san diego we don't have to imagine anymore. >> the ocean covers three quarters of the earth. it spits out gases and aerosols that feed our clouds and control our climate in a major way. so we really want to understand that better than we do. it's really, really exciting. we are at scripps institution
