thanks to karl the fog. this is today in the bae. thanks for joining us on this monday morning. marcus washington has the day off. >> and we'll check in with miami in a minute. hope everybody had a great weekend. >> and the forecast looks good again today, but we're starting out with some fog here and there and we can see it in the scans distance. we look over toward oakland, we are going to see the fog overhead. but in some spots visibility is pretty low. take a look at morgan hill, visibility down to a quarter of a mile. so you want to make sure you are allowing extra time to get through those foggy spots. and we're also seeing it up around santa rose and parts of the north bay. as we go into today, we'll see it clearing out and temperatures warming up, we're headed for the mid-80s for morgan hill, upper hit for san martin and 90 in

fairfield. in the north bay, they will hit 80. and san francisco map marked a good visibility in san francisco, but the golden gate bridge is not the same as being in the city. this is a smooth drive out of the city, nice getting in through the slow glow there, we can see the lights barely from time to time at the bridge. but it is not presenting a problem because of light traffic and seasoned drivers there. farther up in the north bay, limited visibility also into the south county, but we don't have any major problems. i've been tracking this crash west of 580 coming into livermore toward the dublin interchange. we'll get lane information coming up. meanwhile a new disabled vehicle or some sort of hazardous reported in santa clara, as well. over the weekend, the fog certainly stole the show during fleet week. >> karl proved to be too much yesterday afternoon right as the blue angels were set to fly.

thom jensen tells us air show enthusiasts aren't the only ones who got the cold shoulder from mother nature. >> reporter: i talked to the head of the golden gate restaurant association and she told me at her two restaurants it is down about 9% to 10% for dinner business. she says she doesn't think it is a sign of the economy but the cold weather that is just keeping people away especially at night. too cold for a lot of people to eat in these park lites. it would be wrong to say the fleet week was a bust. big crowds stretched the entire length of the embarcadero and most restaurants and shops appeared to be busy. but those hoping to see the main performance sunday afternoon only got to see a few opening acts. >> yeah, a little bit disappointed. >> reporter: when thick fog refused to lift, officials called off the main show. pilots couldn't see important landmarks that they need to use to pull off their high speed choreography.

>> for weather, this is the only time we've ever had something like this happen, it is like a 100 year flood. just very unusual. >> reporter: the air show tracked an estimated 1 million visitors annually before the pandemic, but organizers aren't sure that they will see those kinds of numbers this year. it wasn't until the fog though, even during the afternoons on fleet week weekend, most visitors were bundled up and cool weather may have caused some folks to stay home. >> i thought that the crowds were slightly down. but the enthusiasm was great. >> this is the end of the season, this is supposed to be the big bang, you know, the big final bang. and it just kind of went out with a little, you know, whimpy whimper whimper. >> reporter: the head of the golden gate restaurant association told us lunch crowds seemed a little better and she hopes to have final numbers soon that show how the dining industry as a whole did this week. thom jensen, today in the bay. new to decision 2022, we're

one case a day. on the covid front, researchers say a new subvariant is in the bay area. and they are worried our immune systems might not recognize it. marianne favro explains. >> reporter: the new sub variant called ba.2 has arrived. there is one case of it detected and several other cases confirmed in los angeles county. scientists across the state are closely monitoring it. >> known as one of the most immune evasive variants so far. >> reporter: specifically its spike protein looks different, which means antibodies we have from getting a vaccine or from having had covid may not be able to recognize it. and there could be a higher chance of it causing infection. but ucsf specialist dr. hong

says despite that concern, common antivirals used to fight covid including paxlovid should still be effective. >> it shuts down the mechanism that makes the particles. so it doesn't matter what spike routine you have, paxlovid, remdesivir, all the antivirals will work. >> reporter: and he says scientists are also monitoring another subvariant, bf 7, causing a search in europe. >> it is rising on the charts quickly in the u.s. >> reporter: while he says there is a lull in covid cases in the bay area right now, he still recommends that you get a booster shot soon to protect against getting a severe case that could send you to the hospital. he says getting the booster is especially important if you're immune compromised, over 65 or pregnant. marianne favro, "today in the bay." there is a recall you might need to know about.
