juvenile male and the city's mayor, here's what she had to say overnight. >> we must stop this mindless violence in america. we must address gun violence. we have much to do. and tonight we have much to mourn. >> it's been a difficult night in raleigh, and nbc's blayne alexander has made her way there. blayne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the governor calls this the nightmare of every community. this morning we are learning more about the alleged gunman. police say he is just 15 years old. still recovering here at this hospital, officials say he killed five people in cold blood before being on the run for hours. >> officer down. officer struck in the leg. >> reporter: officials say it was a single gunman who left a trail of terror across a raleigh, north carolina, neighborhood. firing shot after shot, killing five people and wounding at least two others. >> a large police presence here. they just trying to find out what happened.

>> reporter: among those killed an off-duty raleigh police officer on his way to work identified as 25-year-old gabriel torrez. one witness who does not want to be identified said she saw the officer's final moments. >> we heard the gunshots. i saw him, you know, bleeding out in the car. >> that would be the raleigh police officer? >> the off-duty cop, yes, sir. >> reporter: it set off a nearly four-hour manhunt with officials combing the neighborhood, redirecting traffic and warning residents to stay inside. robert anderson says he saw the gunman from his deck. >> he had a camouflage shirt and pants, black boots and also had a backpack that was just looked like it was filled to the brim. >> reporter: he says his demeanor was eerily calm. >> he was walking. and when i tell you he was walking, it was like nothing had happened. and he was just walking, looking

straight forward. he had his gun on his side and it was pointed downwards and he was just walking. >> reporter: officials finally tracked the suspect to a nearby barn where he was holed up inside and ultimately taken into custody. this morning, the police chief says the suspect is a 15-year-old white male in critical condition. law enforcement agencies around the country are sending support for a police department and an entire community shaken to their core. and savannah, we are learning more about the victims. a second officer was shot in the atck. the youngest of the victims, just 16 years old. police still have not said what led up to the shooting. savannah. >> blayne alexander in raleigh, north carolina, for us, blayne, thank you. >> also this morning, there is new fallout after the latest january 6th hearing.

the committee revealing new evidence and voting to subpoena former president trump who is now asking why that didn't happen months ago. nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander joins us with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, the committee laying out its case that former president trump's plan to lay out victory before the results were in was premeditated and later mr. trump knew he lost and that the election was not stolen. the lawmakers also reveal new details about warnings from the secret service before january 6th and mr. trump's armed supporters were preparing to march to the capitol. one agent describing that morning as the calm before the storm. the january 6th committee wrapping up its last hearing before the midterms with an exclamation point. >> ms. cheney. >> aye. >> all nine members voting to subpoena former president trump, but the vote largely symbolic, members previously saying it would be unlikely the former president would comply. mr. trump responding on his social media writing why didn't

the unselect committee ask me to testify months ago because the committee is a total bust that is only served to further divide our country. in what amounted to its closing arguments. >> just putting on their tear gas masks. >> reporter: the committee played dramatic footage of congressional leaders from both parties huddling in a secure location. >> >> an instigation of the president of the united states. >> reporter: as lawmakers exited the chamber in gas masks, the leaders urgently called governors and top trump officials for help. >> why don't you get the president to tell them to leave the capitol, mr. attorney general. >> i'm going to call the secretary of dod. >> reporter: overnight, cnn airing additional footage, including speaker nancy pelosi reacting to the news that mr. trump was considering going to the capitol himself. >> i'm going to punch him out. we're waiting for this, they're

trespassing on the capitol grounds. i'm gointo punch him out and go to jail and i'm going to be happy. >> reporter: it was a bipartisan group, republican leader mitch mcconnell also shown asking the acting secretary of defense for help. >> one hell of a hurry, you understand. >> loud and clear, leader. >> reporter: the committee preparing to issue a final report after the midterms. >> our nation cannot only punish the foot soldiers who stormed our capitol. those who planned to overturn our election and brought us to the point of violence must also be accountable. without accountability, it all becomes normal, and it will reoccur. >> reporter: that footage shot by speaker pelosi's daughter, alexandra, a documentary film maker and within the last hour in a new letter to the committee's chairman, mr. trump repeats his lie that the election was stolen and criticizes the committee for not investigating that, and instead focusing its efforts on what he calls the american patriots who questioned it. the former president notably

does not say whether he will comply with the committee's subpoena. simply put, despite months of testimony from mr. of mr. trump's own former aides and allies, this morning he is still pushing his lies. hoda, back to you. >> peter alexander for us there. peter, thank you. and now to that new report on the economy. confirming what millions of americans are facing every time they shop. prices on everything are still rising. nbc's tom costello is here with us this morning with the details and the reaction from main street to wall street. good morning. >> yeah, and the reaction has been extreme, especially on wall street. hard to understand, to be honest. listen, this inflation report is further evidence as we go into the holidays, you and me and everybody, we are going to be paying more and more and more and feeling the pain. and this inflation report suggested that we have seen a double inflation rate than what many economists expected the ball is in the federal reserve's court. it's expected to keep hiking interest rates to bring inflation down can it do it without triggering

a recession? the latest inflation data is telling us what most of us already know and live with every day. we are all feeling the strain of rising costs deep in our wallets. >> i'm spending more money that's for sure. >> reporter: consumer prices are still on the rise, up 8.2% yea over year as inflation's impact hits essential expenses. compared to last year, the price you are paying at the supermarket has risen 13%. the cost of medical care climbing 6.5%. and electric and gas bills up 15 to 33% >> 100 gallons 539.90. >> reporter: while the persistent pain of higher price tags is felt on main street -- >> we had to adjust our budget for sure for everything. >> reporter: wall street's reaction was extreme volatile thursday at first the dow sank more than 500 points in the morning, then rebounded, closing more than 800 points higher, though that

progress may not be permanent. now all eyes are shifting the federal reserve again, which is expected to increase interest rates by another three-quarters of a point next month, likely making it more expensive to buy a car, use a credit card or buy a new home are we looking at the possibility we could be headed for a recession because the fed keeps hiking rates so aggressively >> whenever the fed is raising rates the spector of that is always present if we are heading into a recession, it will be the weirdest downturn that many of us have ever seen. >> reporter: that's because the job market is strong, unemployment at a 50-year low of 3.5% but at this gi shop in pennsylvania the owner says she is doing her best to freeze the pain of inflation. >> we are just walking a tightrope, not trying to use too much labor and balance out the rising costs. >> tightrope is a good word for what the federal reserve is trying to do here.

raising interest rates to try to crack the back of inflation, but then there is a lag time we don't know if the initial interest rates are having the intended effect. so they have to act before they know if it's working. >> that makes this incredibly challenging. becaus the fed started hiking rates in march and we are at 8.2% inflation. but they are working off of some lagging indicators for example, what rent is doing is not real-time data. that is delayed. by the way, gas prices have surged just since that report in september. you know the fed's target for inflation is 2%. we are at 8.2% right now so they have got a lot of work to do. when will they get it under control? could be 12 months in total, in other words, come next spring it could be longer we simply don't know this economy a head scratcher for many economists. >> the fed having to act the fear is you overshoot. >> exactly, and push us into recession. >> thank you. with the final sprint to the

midterms underway the spotlight is intensifying on a key senate race in pennsylvania expected to play a pivotal role in deciding the balance of power in congress nbc' dasha burns is following it closely, joins us from philly. hey, dasha good morning >> reporter: good morning. you know, earlier this week we spoke with pennsylvania democratic candidate john fetterman. we are now hearing from his republican rival, dr. mehmet oz. all of this in a critical race he is a celebrity tv doctor turned politician who has been endorsed by donald trump. >> when people ask me the question about his health condition, you know what i say i have no idea >> reporter: republican pennsylvania senate candidate and celebrity dr. mehmet oz has been cutting into his democratic rival's lead in recent months looking to capitalize on lieutenant governor john fetterman's time sidelined from the campaign trail by a stroke he says almost killed him. oz's team at times mocking the

stroke survivor. >> one of your campaign staffers said that john fetterman wouldn't have had a stroke if he had quote, ever eaten a vegetable in his life. you're a doctor. you're a heart doctor. you of all people understand what john fetterman is going through better than most why would you allow your campaign to mock him like that? >> i have tremendous compassion for what john fetterman is going through. not only as a doctor do i appreciate the challenges but i know his ailment because it's a specialty area of mine. >> i truly hope that you do not have a doctor in your life laughing at you. >> reporter: in an effort to pressure fetterman to commit to a debate, the oz campaign released a sarcastic statement promising not to hurt john's feelings and offering to pay for medical personnel. doesn't the buck stop with you isn't that what a leader accepts? >> i accepted responsibility and i deal issues as they come up he has his own set of issues and we should have had a debate already. >> reporter: would you ever talk to your patients like this >> no.

>> reporter: the two candidates have also been locked in a battle over crime. >> john fetterman supports decriminalizing dangerous drugs. >> dr. oz doesn't know a thing about crime. >> reporter: but oz revealing there may be a point of agreement on president biden's pardon of those convicted of marijuana possession so you support the president's move there >> i think the move is a rational move, yeah. >> pennsylvania, we are gonna have a lot of fun. >> reporter: he secured the republican nomination thanks in part to an endorsement from former president trump and though he is happy to share the stage, dr. oz tried to distance himself from some of mr. trump's extreme positions, including the election denial claims at the heart of the january 6th capitol riot. >> by the time the reports were sent to the u.s. senate our job was to approve it, which is what i would have done. >> reporter: he is also distancing himself from the abortion battle, repeatedly refusing to say whether he would support senator lindsey graham's propose ed national abortion ban.

call wednesday night officials say 34-year-old bristol officer hamzy and 35-year-old sergeant demonte were killed in an ambush style attack a third officer was also injured in that shooting his injuries are not considered life threatening the suspect was also shot and killed during that incident. breaking overnight, north korea fired a ballistic missile towards the sea and flew warplanes near the border with south korea further raising tensions between those two countries. it was north korea's 15th missile launch since it resumed its testing last month in response, south korea today imposed unilateral sanctions on the north for the first time in five years. the soccer ball known as the hand of god ball is up for auction where it could fetch 3 billion dollars. the ball was made famous in the 1984 quarterfinal between argentina and england. an image of the controversial goal shows what happened punching the ball past england's

goalkeeper later claiming it was scored a little with the hand of god. but wait the story gets better. the ball was currently owned by a referee who officiated that game. >> wow >> interesting. >> wow. turning to big news from netflix. after losing subscribers for the first time in a decade, the company has just unveiled the details for a new cheaper plan, but there is always a but, with commercials. >> nbc's stephanie gosk is here with everything we need to know. hey, steph, good morning >> good morning. netflix was one of the final hold-outs. they had resisted offering a cheaper version with ads, but the competition got too intense. this version will be out in november it's a plea for new subscribers and a scramble to keep the ones the company already has. no commercials is nice now netflix is acknowledging for some cheaper is better >> i don't know how to say this other than just to say it.

>> reporter: the streaming giant unveiling the long awaited basic with ad service. the new option will cost $6.99 a month, $3 less than the most basic commercial free option and will include an average of four to five minutes of ads per hour the commercial option which is expected to drop next month is the latest move from netflix to try to rebound after a rough start to the year. in april the company announced it lost 200,000 subscribers and the stock price took a nosedive. netflix cut hundreds of jobs, and even tried to crack down on password sharing, a popular way for families and friends to watch content on one account but with everyone feeling the pinch of inflation, canceling a streaming service or two has been a quick way to cut back those bills can add up quickly without subscribing to these services can cost nearly $70 a month, more than $800 a year.
