>> it's monday. but we're here and we're streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. just need one more day. >> i would love a three-day weekend. that would be perfect. one for laundry, two for fun. >> if we had a three-day weekend, we would probably ask for four. >> the hardest thing is doing all the chores. you give a mouse a cookie. all right, let's get to that forecast. kari is back. >> i had a whirlwind trip to boston. >> no kidding. >> hopefully we are going to see some rain in the forecast. that's on farther down the line but now as we get a look at our visibility as you get ready to head out the door it's mostly foggy in parts of the north bay where we look at santa rosa. visibility is down to about three-quarters of a mile. we are going to start out foggy, but look at where we're headed today, partly to mostly cloudy, and our temperatures in the low 70s for san jose as well as hayward. oakland, 71. 71 in san mateo.

77 in novato. we are going to see a slow warm-up as we head through the week. i'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you have a note for drivers out of contra costa county. i do. some of the few areas we see any signs of the morning commute. the peninsula, across the bay, the south bay. there's a little blip in the south bay, 680. there may be a crew around mckee. i'll track that. a build out of the altamont. vasco, reports of debris, garbage across all lanes. maybe somebody dropped a bag of garbage. no major problems. and the travel times out of brentwood, still just 16 minutes. back over to you. >> thank you, mike. officials are monitoring air quality again because of a fire that started in the pittsburg march back in june is flaring up again. >> since june, yeah. after months of efforts to douse that area, it is still smoldering underground. how this could impact nearby

people. >> reporter: back in june flames from the marsh fire were large, but firefighters got most of it under control. the area by willow pass road and the delta near the marsh itself proved to be more difficult. contra costa county fire pumped tens of thousands of water per minute into the area over the summer. now the fire district says the fire is again burning below the surface in naturally occurring soil. they asked the owner of the property to step up efforts to put it out and says the owner has hired a private water tender to help. >> it's only smoldering so it's not a great volume of smoke. >> reporter: air quality in pittsburg is in the good zone for now and that the fire is not impacting the bay area's air quality as a whole. >> but depending on where you are, some of that smoldering smoke could reach you depending on which way the winds below. >> reporter: county officials

tweeted saying they are monitoring air quality in pittsburg and say it's in the acceptable range at last reading. the air district says if you do smell smoke from the marsh fire or any other fire, you are probably being impacted. >> so the best thing to do would be to go indoors, close the windows and doors. if you're still feeling some sort of health impact, contact your health provider or get out of the area. >> reporter: while air quality in the bay area is not unhealthy right now, the district says we are being impacted by another phenomenon. the inversion that's keeping us socked in with fog traps more pollutants close to the surface. when that weather pattern changes, they expect air quality will change, too. alyssa gourd, "today in the bay." secretary of state antony blinken's office says his visit is meant to highlight america's

will for diplomacy. vice president kamala harris traveling to the bay area tomorrow, battling climate change and will attend a democratic finance event. the oakland native was last in the bay area in august discussing reproductive rights. two juries deliberating in the kristin smart murder trial will return to court after the jury for paul flores was unexpectedly absent from court last friday. court officials did not give an update on the notice. the two separate juries are deciding whether paul flores is guilty of smart's murder, and whether his father helped him to cover it you will. the jury for reuben flores was told to restart thursday after a juror was excused and replaced. a speedbump in the sentencing of theranos founder elizabeth holmes. the court pushed back the sentencing date. it was originally set for today, but it has now been postponed.

instead today there will be a trial hearing to address whether or not the prosecution is at fault for any misconduct involving testimony from an ex-theranos lab director. back in january holmes was found guilty of four counts of fraud by lying to investors about the capabilities of her blood testing startup. now to decision 2022. midterm elections just over three weeks away, one of the hot issues in san francisco is whether jfk drive and golden gate park and a stretch of the great highway should stay car free or be reopened to vehicles. christie smith spoke to strong supporters on both sides of the issue. >> reporter: overcast skies didn't stop people from getting exercise on jfk drive in golden gate park. this san francisco family enjoys the car-free stretch made widely available during the pandemic. >> our kids love it and we live a few blocks away and think it should be kept closed for cars and open for scooting, biking,

running, and for the public. >> reporter: the future of a car-free jfk drive has been a hotly debated topic. in april city leaders decided to make the car-free space permanent. the debate didn't end there. in november voters will be asked to vote on proposition i and proposition j. supporters of proposition j were out in golden gate park talking with voters. the group walk san francisco supports it. >> measure j reaffirms what the board of supervisors passed in the spring which people love, which is this 1.5 miles of car-free space. >> reporter: marta lindsey says it is not just popular, it's much safer. >> a lot of our streets are incredibly dangerous. to have a space we can relax and be safe and people have just responded to this so much. there's such a need for this and a lot of other reasons, too. >> it really is access. >> reporter: terry shaw volunteers for the yes on i campaign and believes it's time to reopen the roadway to cars and the stretch of the great

good monday morning to you. it is 4:41. as you are getting up and about to head off to work, in the south county starting off in the low 50s. mostly cloudy. but at least as of now fog is not an issue. as we go into late morning, we'll see it clearing out. there will only be peeks of sunshine today. not as much sun as we've seen keeping our temperatures down. we'll talk about that and more changes ahead in our forecast coming up. traffic is not really an issue. in oakland, the nimitz, northbound with these headlights coming undernooeft the overcrossing right around 66.

we're looking at southbound traffic equally as smooth. let's see what there is or isn't as far as issues in the business front. let's check in with bertha. hey, good morning, mike. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. looks like smooth sailing for the bulls on wall street this morning. stocks look to open higher. the markets come off a mostly negative week. the dow did manage to eke out a gain and made it two weeks in a row for positive momentum. the moves come as investors are reacting to that hotter than expected read on consumer inflation last week and wondering whether that is just going to push the federal reserve to keep hiking interest rates aggressively well into next year rather than take a pause. this week we're going to get data on manufacturing, housing and, as usual, the unemployment claims and we're also getting a slew of earnings reports. this morning we got better than expected numbers out of bank of

america. we'll be hearing from american express, j&j, ibm, netflix, tesla and verizon. meantime, small businesses are stocking the shelves early for the holidays this year and waiting to see how much shoppers waeed down by inflation feel like spending. the national retail federation says that november and december typically make up 20% of annual retail sales. this year small businesses are bracing for more muted season because of inflation. consulting firm alex partners is forecasting holiday sales will rise between 4% and 7%. that's a far cry from the 16% gain we saw last year. meantime, apple is working on a dock for the ipad that would allow the tablet to work as a smart display and speaker. bloomberg reports apple plans to introduce the new function as soon as next year converting the ipad into a device similar to the amazon echo show that you can put on top of a counter or on your night stand.

good monday morning to you. a chilly start across much of the bay area. you're having to go back in and grab the heavier jacket as we are in the mid-40s in napa and 44 in santa rosa and 49 in palo alto. dublin also 49. most of our temperatures in the low to mid-50s for the south bay over to the east bay as well as san francisco. let's get you out the door in oakland with a live look outside, no issues with fog. we are starting out clear. it is mostly cloudy and the temperature at 50 degrees. as we go through the morning we will stay in the 50s through 9:00. we're not looking at a lot of sunshine. it's going to stay mostly cloudy, but that will also keep those temperatures down. we have a disturbance just off the coast and it's going to keep it cloudy today, even a little

bit of mist and drizzle in some areas where we see temperatures in the 60s. in oakland as well as hayward a high of 71 degrees. we're in the upper 70s in concord and dublin and 79 today in san martin. as we go into tomorrow, it does get warmer as we get more sunshine. we'll head back into the low 80s which is still a little bit what we compare to normal. it's about normal for this time of year. it will continue to heat up with the warmest day on wednesday before those temperatures come back down. let's check out livermore and see how our temperatures change. going up to 91 degrees. if you thought we were done with 90s, we are not. and it's still going to be warm on thursday. but then look at the weekend. the big difference it makes from wednesday to saturday, we'll go from having highs in the low 90s to the upper 60 outside. but this is part of the reason why it will be cooler. we have some cool air dropping in as well as some showers just

to our north. now it looks like most of us missed out on the rain because it just falls apparent before it gets here. we may have a better shot next week. and i'm also looking forward to that chance of some sierra snow next week so that will be great to see that if it does all hold together. we're looking at temperatures today, mostly in the mid-70s and then once again we'll start to warm up tomorrow into wednesday. by the end of the weekend we will have that system dropping in bringing the chance of showers to the north and cooler temperatures while san francisco will be in the mid-60s today. we'll bring it up to about 70 tomorrow and peak at 73 on wednesday. mike, you are watching a crash on highway 4. >> i am. antioch bridge is just fine merging on to highway 4. it's westbound that your commute with the build, nostund around . it's on the shoulder. a couple of vehicles are involved. i'm watching carefully just to see the signs as the early commute tends to originate and

push over to where we first see slowing through pittsburg. the walnut creek interchange and the carquinez interchange fine down to the bay bridge for west 580. it was not 680, it was capital expressway and it was. it's not there now. back to you. turning to our climate in crisis, california is losing one of its only natural defenses to sea level rise. >> so over the last century the state has loews most of its coastal marsh lands and rising sea levels could wipe out what's left and that could leave homes and infrastructure, some of the most valuable companies all exposed to devastating flooding. but there is a solution, and lx storyteller greg bledsoe will tell us. >> reporter: these marshy areas line the coast of california, and they're important because they protect us from things like flooding and erosion. but right now we're facing a very real threat that some day all of this could just

disappear. >> this is facebook's main campus. it extends all the way down there. >> we are basically on the edge of silicon valley. >> reporter: silicon valley, home to some of the most valuable companies in the world, right across the street from some of california's most vulnerable lands. >> i don't want to see us lose our coastal marshes. the more we study them, the more important we realize this is for protecting our coast. i'm a professor of geography. you know they provide sort of a barrier between storm surges and tidal surges. marshes are thought of as a sponge. they absorb that force, they protect our roads and our communities and just everything. >> reporter: but here is the problem. what if that entire sponge were under water?

>> global sea level is rising. it's accelerating. that threatens to drown these vegetative coastal wetlands. >> reporter: could these disappear some day? >> we did a study with the u.s. geological survey, and we look at 14 marshes and what we found is under a high sea level scenario. we're virtually going to lose almost all of them. we're losing a whole ecosystem, a whole ecosystem in the state is in jeopardy. >> reporter: and it's not just losing an ecosystem it would be losing that natural protection for a lot of things we depend on every day. >> a lot of the development, most of the airports, most of the waste water treatment plants, the bridges, the highways, a lot are on the shores of the bay. and soap as the sea levels rise, those places are at risk of regular flooding and inundation. if we do nothing at all the high tides of the bay will overtop

these former berms and flood the state highway that's there and eventually across the highway and will flood facebook. >> reporter: while the rest of the world figures it out, there is something happening right now that could buy california a little more time. >> this truck is bringing in dirt. i think they're aiming for about 140 trucks today, something like that, all full of dirt, and they're using it to build up one of the internal levees. >> reporter: this project from san francisco's south bay will spend hundreds of millions to build up the levees. the goal to keep up with rising water for decades to come and restore the habitat. >> we're getting marsh plants established, indigenous species. >> reporter: it works, right? >> it does. it's slow. it takes time, money, talent, people, patience and effort. but it does work. >> reporter: this is expensive. but when you consider the threat to infrastructure, real estate,
