thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington has the day off. he might be glad. it's extra monday. it's hot in here. the computer was not on. it was hard. nice to have you back, kari. >> yeah, it was great to go to the east coast, come back within a couple of days. oh, lord, thank you i'm back in the bay area. for weather, it was a conference and i learned a lot. >> that's great. >> i can't wait to hear about it. let's get you to the forecast. i want to show you what's going on before you step out the door as we look outside at the bay bridge. visibility is all good here. our clouds are up a little bit higher as we have a disturbance off the coast. we also have some fog moving around parts of the north bay. in santa rosa visibility is down to half of a mile. allow some extra time to get to work. elsewhere it is mainly clear and then as we take a look at our

temperatures for today, much cooler than we typically see for this time in october only reaching 77 in dublin. 73 in san jose and upper 60s in san francisco. we'll talk about some warming ahead. that's in a few minutes. mike, you have a clear view from emeryville. >> i am not trying to man-splain this. what we're looking at here is traffic flowing, my focus on the roadways, a smooth, easy drive. notice the flashing lights. crews are typically there overnight. no surprises on the bay bridge right now. you are at speed there. across the rest of the bridges as well we'll take you over by the richmond bridge -- i'm sorry, antioch bridge. we're looking as crews should be arriving soon to take care of this crash near hillcrest on highway 4. no disturbance so far. intense themes as chp says

troopers tried to pull over a car in san jose around 1:00 this morning. the driver was wanted for traffic violations. the car eventually crashed around 2:00 in the morning in brisbane. officers fired projectiles at the car's back window. the driver exited the vehicle finally and was taken into custody. he was evaluated by medics at the scene. no word yet on his condition. a sense of relief in stockton where police announced the arrest of a suspect in a series of deaths believed to be the work of a serial killer. >> ginger conejero saab is live this morning. it sounds like the arrest may have averted even more tragedy. >> reporter: good morning, laura and kris. police were confident in saying that. stockton police arrested wesley brownlee. they did so early saturday morning. they say when they arrested him he was, quote, out hunting.

brownlee was wearing dark clothing with a mask around his neck. police describe him as being on a mission to kill. brownlee is suspected to be responsible for the death of five men from stockton including one man from oakland, so six men total. he is also believed to have shot a woman from stockton who survived. police say tips led to identifying the suspect. the community says they feel a sense of relief. >> i'm just grateful that they were able to save it from happening to another person and another family. having to go through what we've gone through is horrific. >> it's a very scary feeling. to know he was that close to us. >> reporter: most of victims were latino men. several of them homeless. officials say there is no evidence the killings were race-based or targeted. police are examining ba listic evidence from a .9 millimeter gun to see if it's connected to

the shootings. he is expected to be in court tomorrow. now there was $125,000 cash reward. police say there will be a pay out but no word if it will go to one personal or multiple people as the tips came in. ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> thank you, ginger. >> a really interesting case there. overseas this morning, ukraine is under a new round of heavy fire from russian artillery. we have video captured by one nbc producer in kyiv showing a predawn explosion. it's not clear what was damaged. ukrainian leaders say so-called kamikaze russian drones are behind many of the latest strikes. the damage includes several units and a residential high rise. search and rescue efforts are ongoing. turning now to decision 2022. we're just about three weeks

until the midterm elections now. >> voting in several states is already getting under way. "today in the bay's" brie jackson is live in washington. brie, a handful of races could determine which party prevails. >> reporter: that's right. republicans and democrats are in a fierce fight for control of the evenly divided senate with races tightening in certain key states including georgia. early voting begins in georgia today. it's a crucial race in the battle to control congress. senator raphael warnock is facing off against former nfl star herschel walker. >> i've never pretended to be a police officer. >> reporter: during an exclusive interview with nbc's kristen welker, walker is defending his actions after flashing a badge during a recent debate. >> it is an honorary badge, but they can call me and i have the authority to do things.

"the chronicle" reports charles johnson has made donations backing herschel walker's senate run. walker's in a tight race with raphael warnock. meanwhile, walker, sitting down for an exclusive interview on this morning's "today" show is facing a barrage of recent criticism including controversy over claims he paid for an abortion for a former girlfriend and more recently brandishing a sheriff's badge on stage during

a recent debate. >> this is from my hometown. this is from johnson county, from the sheriff, which is a legit badge. everyone can make fun. this badge gives me the right -- let me finish -- if anything happened in this town, itch the right to work with the police getting things done. >> walker says he received an honorary badge. you can watch the interview at 7:00 a.m. this morning after "today in the bay." mourners this week are saying a final farewell to two brothers shot and killed at a party in the east bay. tomorrow funeral services will be held for 15-year-old angel and 17-year-old jayz garcia. they will gather for a wake in hayward. the two boys attended berkeley high school and died earlier this month during a house party at an airbnb. police believe the victims were targeted following some sort of conflict at their school. but so far no arrests have been made. today marks 33 years since the

loma prieta earthquake. it was centered near santa cruz. the collapse of the nimitz freeway and deadly fires in the marina district. >> 63 people died. thousands others were injured. later today a special monument will be unveiled to commemorate the quake in front of fire station 35 along the embarcadero. and then on thursday california holds its annual great shakeout drill. it will take place statewide at 10:20 a.m. on thursday. the goal of preparing everyone for the next big earthquake. is it possible to predict the next big one? a question people have been trying to answer for decades. you can watch the full report online at nbcbayarea.com. a live look at san jose this morning looking nice and peaceful so far. we know that there are changes coming in the weather.

so maybe not right away. >> some of the same weather continues today. then it will start to warm up. a live look outside in san jose right now it is a mostly cloudy start to our morning. temperatures in the mid-50s and a light wind. at least it's clear for your drive to work or school and then we'll see temperatures at about 60 degrees at 9:00. your lunch time temperatures, 66 degrees. really comfortable. our highs around the bay area with napa headed for 73. fairfield reaching 80 degrees and 79 in livermore. a high of 79 in san martin and mountain view reaching 71. we'll talk about that warmer air coming up. mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. trying, kari, as always. we have more prices in the $5 range today. $5.49 at the cupertino car wash. at interstate gasoline $5.29.

temperatures. we are going to see eventually a warm-up and we'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up. and we're looking at dublin where traffic flows smoothly. good volume right on schedule here but in the area, also in the tri-valley looking at a car fire and mystery slowdown. well, good morning. a very happy monday to you. our roller coaster stock market is on the climb again. futures calling for hundreds of points on the open. friday hundreds of points to the negative. netflix and tesla both report profits this week. a lot of new cars competing with tesla, both jeep and mercedes out there with new electric cars. in fact, jeep starts taking orders on its electric jeep this morning. kanye west is buying the social network parler, according to the company. west says, quote, in a world where conservative opinions are considered controversial, we have to make sure to have the

right to freely express ourselves. you may recall twitter suspended west last week for threatening the jewish people. i will go death con 3 on jewish people, he said, apparently confusing the military term. set up by critics of twitter. truth central is another one. both object to twitter's censorship but both themselves have rules covering what can and cannot be posted. as for the parler buyout it's not clear how much west will pay. we're going to keep our eye on 10 downing street today, home of one of the biggest political 180s in political history. today the united kingdom's prime minister, liz truss, and her new financial minister will announce new tax hikes and spending cuts. earlier this month the new british leader announced the opposite, tax cuts and spending hikes and nearly wrecked the

economy. and back home here as of today you can buy hearing aids over the counter. congress had been pressuring the fda to do this for years. now doctors estimate less than one in five americans who need a hearing aid use a hearing aid. the other thing i did not realize is that hearing aids generally speaking aren't covered by medical insurance. >> no, they're not. >> this is not something i was aware of, and obviously you can give it some time, but the prices of these otc hearing aids should come down as more companies come in and compete. the better the supply, the lower the price. >> i just wonder you can go and get the little cheaters at the drugstore, so how do you know if you're getting the right -- >> that's what i wonder, too. having these centers is really important where people know what they're doing. >> sure. but then again there's all kinds of people who can't afford those centers. >> that's true. >> we'll figure it out as the years go on. >> my father-in-law will be very

>> go in person to the store helps. a recent delivery at a california hospital is leaving folks seeing double. >> that's where a woman gave birth to a set of twins this month. due to the high risk, two doctors were called in. they asked for the names of the babies and she replied emma and julie. >> beautiful. >> team burst into laughter because they were the names of the nurses taking care of the babies. isn't that funny? mom and babies are doing well. the team will always have a special place in her heart. >> can you imagine the nurses laughing at you. >> what? those are great names. >> that's cute. kari, you were at a weather conference this week. you were busy. >> yeah. and i got caught in the rain. >> all meteorologists and none of them had an umbrella. >> i don't even know where my umbrella is. i guess i will have to find it

before next week. >> oh. >> here in the bay area we could see rain. >> what did you bring back with you? >> yes, i'm bringing it back because we need it, don't we? take a look at our fog we are being greeted with this morning and look at novato. visibility has dropped to zero. so we are seeing this fog getting worse in parts of the north bay. allow extra time because visibility is less than half of a mill. in martinez, it's 53 degrees. we'll see temperatures in the 50s to start. it's not going to be the clear, sunny day we typically see. the clouds will keep the temperatures down lower. so we'll see a high of about 77 in hayward. mountain view and san mateo, 73 in napa. san francisco stays in the 60s today and then going into tomorrow look at how much warmer it's going to be. we will still see some clouds in the mix. once it clears up our temperatures will get warmer

than what we'll see today. even warmer on wednesday. this will be the peak of the temperatures. if you thought we were done with 90s, not just yet. let's take a look at morgan hill. over the next several days we are headed straight up to the low 90s and back down. take a look at the difference from 91 on wednesday to a high of 68 on saturday. that's going to be a drastic drop in temperatures. i think it's perfect if you're planning to go out to the pumpkin patch this is part of the reason why it will be cooler. we are going to see a chance of showers moving in. most of the rain stays just to our north, but we'll have a better chance next week and it comes next tuesday into wednesday as we get more widespread light showers. it may be the first decent sierra snow we see. take a look at this seven-day forecast. we have mid-70s for highs today inland to mid-80s on wednesday and then we'll bring it back to about 70 on saturday as those

showers move in just to our north. and for san francisco it's going to warm up as well. a little bit less fog. more sunshine by the middle of the week. mike, you are starting to see some slowing in the valley. >> and both spots are unexpected. this one first because i just found out there's a car fire just off isabel so that will be an issue -- it is an issue as the commute builds here. i don't know why this is happening on 680. there's clearly a slowdown that's building as folks head into sunol. both are just shy of 84 and both popular routes. that is your note as you come out of the valley off the dublin interchange or out of the altamont pass. we'll track this closely. that's a critical area for the morning commute. the rest of the bay moves smoothly. there's a warning fire. we'll track that of course as well. back to you.

>> reporter: good morning. this is an odd one for us. usually viewers ask us for help when a company doesn't respond. fran in san jose contacted us after a company responded and made good. here is what happened. she bought a sectional and

smoldering fire flaring up. ahead in a live report, concerns in the east bay that now have firefighters taking new action and an update on air quality. plus, san francisco voters, you are set to weigh in. should a popular stretch of roadway remain closed through golden gate park, or should it reopen to traffic? it's a heated debate over access versus safety. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. and it's good to have you with us on this monday morning. i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington has the morning off. >> so nice to have you. i'm laura garcia. we hope you had a great weekend. we'll be checking weather and traffic in just a moment. developing in contra costa county officials are monitoring the air quality. >> that's because a fire that started in the pittsburg marsh back in june is still flaring up once again. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from the east bay. >> reporter: good morning to

you, kris and laura. the question is what kind of concern or how big a concern is this going to be for air quality. unfortunately, it's not a great concern. the marsh fire burned 159 acres in contra costa county over the summer. firefighters successfully doused most of it at a rate of tens of thousands of gallons a minute at one point. now they say the fire is again burning underground, naturally occurring pete soil. con fire says the owner has hired a private water tender after they asked the owner to put out the fire. the air quality levels in nearby pittsburg are in the good zone and not unhealthy now. >> depending on where you are some of that smoldering smoke could reach you depending on which way the wind blows. >> reporter: they say we are being impacted by the inversion that's keeping us socked in with

this fog. when that weather pattern changes we can expect the air quality to improve. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. so let's turn to meteorologist kari hall who is tracking the air quality here. kari, are you noticing any impacts of that right now? it's just a small impact. we are seeing moderate air quality. across the east bay you may smell a little bit of that smoke and that's what they were saying, it's time to head inside because this could affect your health. it's all about the wind direction as we look at our pittsburg wind direction, here we are at 2:00 in the afternoon and it's still variable. we have a dominant westerly wind coming in off the coast and moving into parts of the delta as well as the east bay but notice how parts of the north bay have more of a southerly wind and that could bring some of that smoke in that direction up around napa as well as other

parts of moving over to sacramento county but we are going to see still some light and variable winds today. when the smoke from the fire gets more prominent, you can start to smell some of that. we will continue to monitor throughout the day as we get cooler temperatures. more of that in the forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. new overnight, police investigating a double shooting in the enabled between edi and tur. they report witnesses say up to 20 shots were fired. no update on the two victims. gunfire struck several nearby cars. so far police are not providing an update. happening today former mixed martial arts champ cain velasquez is due in court.

they say he shot up a pickup truck in san jose near coyote valley. the truck was carrying a man accused of sexually assaulting one of velasquez's relatives. that man was unharmed but another was struck by the gunfire. he has been held without bail ever since the time of his arrest. two juries deliberating in the kristin smart murder trial will return to court after the jury for paul flores was unexpectedly absent from court on friday. court officials did not give an explanation for the absence but said the jury is scheduled to return this morning. the two separate juries are deciding whether paul flores is guilty of smart's murder and whether his father, ruben flores, helped him to cover it up. the jury for ruben flores was also told to restart their deliberations thursday after a juror was excused and replaced. to decision 2022 in san francisco three weeks from now voters will decide the future of

a popular stretch of roadway closed since almost the start of the pandemic. jfk drive to golden gate park first closed by supervisors two and a half years ago. proposition i calls for traffic to fully reopen there and along the great highway. proposition j, meantime, would allow for continued recreational use of jfk drive. people who support the jfk drive closure say the popular roadway is much safer for those who enjoy biking, jogging and walking. opponents call it a question of access for people who need it. >> to have one space for us where we can relax and be safe and people have responded. there's such a need for this. >> seniors are overwhelmingly in favor of opening up jfk because we miss the access and understand what it's like to be denied access. >> each needs a simple majority to pass. if both pass, the one receiving

the most yes votes wins out. a special page on our website dedicated to voter guides breaking down key races. head to nbcbayarea.com/decision2022. let's take a live look at san francisco. we can see the whole transamerica building. no fog there in the distance. changes are coming in the weather department, right, kari? a mostly cloudy start to our day around the bay area. as you step out in oakland, temperatures in the mid-50s, we do typically see our morning start. then it won't be clearing out as quickly as those clouds linger into late morning. it also keeps our temperatures down. it will be cooler than what we typically see for the middle of october. so fremont as well as san jose will see a high of 73 degrees. 77 in novato and in santa rosa, 75 with upper 60s in san francisco. as we go into tomorrow temperatures ticking up several

degrees. livermore will reach 84 there and 82 in santa rosa we'll talk more coming up. mike has aith the lane closures. most of the bay shows green. typical slowing. we found out what was going on. chp did drop a note about a crash. around sunol boulevard, the backup builds quickly coming off the dublin interchange. allow for about 15 minutes extra. if they don't clear it in a couple it's going to get much bigger. a bigger benefit is a better option out of the altamont pass. they did take care of that car fire. no injuries reported. the posey tube from alameda to
