the north bay. you may have to grab that warmer jacket and then step out as oakland is right now at 47 degrees. we have mid-50s for san mateo and in fremont, 350 degrees. so that's where we begin. as you are heading to work in berkeley, we go from low 50s and a cloudy sky to about 60 degrees and still cloudy and only some peeks of sunshine today. that will keep those temperatures down. for many of us it will be a little bit cooler than normal. but we do have more changes ahead. and i'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. kris and laura? >> thank you very much, kari. some intense scenes played out as a police chase stretched from the south bay to the peninsula. chp says it started when troopers tried to pull over a car in san hope say this morning. that driver was wanted for traffic violations. the driver took off and eventually crashed around 2:00 this morning in brisbane. there was a brief standoff. officers fired projectiles at the car's back window. the driver finally exited the

vehicle and was taken into custody. he was evaluated by medics at the scene. we don't yet know his condition. and a major sense of relief starting to set in in stockton where police this weekend announced the arrest of a suspect in that series of deaths believed to be the work of a serial killer. >> "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab live this morning. ginger, it sounds like this arrest may have averted even more tragedy? >> reporter: that's right. good morning, laura and kris. stockton police say they have arrested 43-year-old wesley brownlee early saturday morning. they say he was, quote, out hunting. now police described him as carrying a gun, wearing dark clothing and a mask around his neck at the time of the arrest. they also described him as being on a mission to kill. now brownlee is suspected to be responsible for the death of six men, and believed to have shot a woman from stockton who

survived. police say tips led to identifying the suspect and those tips from the community, that community says they feel a sense of relief. >> i'm just grateful that they were able to save it from happening to another person and another family having to go through what we've gone through. it's been horrific. >> it's just a very scary feeling to know he was that close to us. >> reporter: most of the victims were latino men. several of them homeless. officials say there is no evidence the killings were race based or targeted. police are examining ballistic evidence from a .9 millimeter handgun found in brownlee's car to see if it's connected to the shootings. he is expected to be in court tomorrow. now there was $125,000 cash reward that was set to be given for any information leading to an arrest. investigators say there will be a payout, but as of now no word

if that will go to one person or to multiple people. in san francisco, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, ginger. some relief finally for those families. mourners are preparing to say a final farewell to two brothers shot and killed at a party in the east bay. tomorrow funeral services will be held for 15-year-old angel and 17-year-old jayz garcia. the two young men died at a house party in oakland. police believe the victims were targeted during some type of conflict that happened at school. so far no arrest have is been announced. overseas this morning ukraine is under a new round of heavy fire from russian artillery. we have video captured by nbc producer in kyiv showing a predawn explosion. not yet clear what it damaged.

ukrainian leaders say so-called kamikaze russian drones are behind many of the latest strikes. the damage includes several units in a residential high rise. at least one death is being reported. at least three victims have been sent to the hospital. certificate. and rescue efforts are ongoing. turning now to decision 2022, we are now more than three weeks away from the midterm elections, 22 days, in fact. future control of congress is at stake as voting is beginning in several states and that's getting under way today. time these days, kari. we're still a good hour away from sun rise right now and in some parts of the north bay we've seen fog moving around. so visibility being cut down to about a mile in santa rosa, just a little bit better in santa rosa but elsewhere mostly clear as the clouds are a lot higher up. but around those school zones be really careful with the fog. low visibility in santa rosa. jackets on for the start of the day and mostly cloudy even into the afternoon with some low 70s. we're headed for 75 degrees there. novato reaching 77. some low 70s in hayward and mountain view and in san jose reaching 73 degrees. we'll talk about a warm-up in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike is keeping us up to date on where we can find lower gas prices. >> more variety in the $5 range. there's a qualification here. we have $5.49 at cupertino. at interstate gasoline on the

minister, liz truss, and her new financial minister will announce tax hikes and spending cuts. earlier this month the british leader announced the opposite, tax cuts and hikes and nearly wrecked the economy. and back home here as of today you can buy hearing aids over the counter. congress had been pressuring the fda to do this for years. now doctors estimate less than one in five americans who need a hearing aid use a hearing aid. now you will still have the high-end hearing aids, which can run as high as $4,000, $5,000 that are custom fit and excellent, et cetera. but this is an example, we were talking over the commercial break, cheap eyeglasses. they're affordable for anybody. they may not be as good -- >> better than nothing. >> i bet it will get better. >> good news for so many people. >> i really think so. >> thank you, scott.

there is a big show in the skies set to happen late they are week. you'll have to have the coffee on standby. >> that's right. the orionids meteor shower is expected to peak around 1:00 a.m. on friday morning and it will last until dawn. the most favorable time to see the show is 3:00 a.m., depending on the weather, you should be able to see 10 to 20 meteors per hour. the cosmic event is the result of the trail of dust left by haley's comet which will next pass near earth in 2061. so join us here on "today in the bay." we're up that early, believe it or not. >> we'll make some coffee for you. >> make a lot of wishes, right? >> yeah. that's what i like to do. hopefully we do see the clear skies around that time but it will depend on where you are in the bay area.

for this morning it's pretty much cloudy everywhere. let's head over to palo alto, we'll see the temperatures in the next hour and then as we go into the rest of the day, not the typical morning clouds, afternoon sunshine. we're going to see those clouds linger a lot longer as we see the storm system off the coast and it brings in some cooler temperatures. 77 in concord. as you look at the seven-day forecast up at the bottom of the screen it will warm up between now and wednesday. look at fairfield tomorrow reaching 86 degrees and you're going to feel the difference in san francisco. up to 75. low 80s tomorrow afternoon and it gets even warmer on wednesday with some 90s popping up on the map. so we are not done with 90s just yet. we'll feel that in san martin and concord as well as livermore and will be very close to novato

for wednesday. but then we will have a lot more changes ahead going into the weekend. a big cooldown as rain moves just to our north. i don't think we're going to see a lot of this rain in the bay area but it's going to be passing very close by. looks like we have a better chance of rain next week and possibly our first decent sierra snow. so this is once again a week out from now, but we'll be, of course, keeping an eye on it as it finally brings in some beneficial rain, maybe some sierra snow. we are mostly dry this week and our temperatures will be warming up through wednesday and then we're going back down to some of our warmest spots inland hitting 70 degrees. for san francisco we'll be up to the low 70s for tomorrow on wednesday but after that we're back to the 60s for the rest of the week. mike, you were looking at the ripple effect from a crash in sunol. all the traffic is interconnected. one issue in the tri-valley, southbound 680 really jammed up

a very good monday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington has the morning off. developing now in contra costa county officials are monitoring the air quality. >> that's because a fire that started in the pittsburg marsh back in june is actually flaring up again. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live to talk about how big of a concern this should be. >> reporter: well, good morning to you, kris and laura. not a great concern. you might recall the marsh fire that burned this past summer in contra costa county, burned 159 acres. con fire says it is burning again underground in naturally occurring peat soil by willow pass road and the delta. you might recall they doused a lot of water on it back then. here it is again smoldering. con fire says the owner of the property has hired a private water tender after con fire asked the owner to put out the

fire. the air quality district says levels in pittsburg are in the good zone and not unhealthy right now. >> depending on where you are, some of that smoldering smoke could reach you depending on which way the winds blow. >> reporter: the air quality district says impacted by another phenomena, inversion, that's keeping us socked in fog that traps more pollutants close to the surface. when that weather pattern changes they expect the air quality to improve. reporting live in the east bay, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. so let's turn to meteorologist kari hall now who is tracking air quality. what are we looking at for today? >> it is having an impact on parts of the bay area, but it's not everyone and it's very localized. it really does depend on wind direction. as we look at our air quality and what we're seeing now and expecting throughout the day, moderate air quality for the coast and the bay and some of that coming through the delta. but look at the arrows. they kind of show you how

variable the wind is. comes from different directions and is not a very strong wind. it's mostly at about 10 to 12 miles per hour, even going into this afternoon. notice how in napa we have more of a southerly wind that could draw in some of that smoke into parts of the north bay. more so over to the sacramento valley but we are going to see some of that localized smoke impact continue throughout the day. we'll continue to monitor that. we'll talk about some warmer air in our forecast coming up in a few minutes. thank you very much, kari. new overnight police investigating an apparent double shooting in san francisco's philmore neighborhood just west of jefferson square park. a theft report. up to 20 shots were fired. no update on two of the victims. gunfire struck several nearby parked cars. police are only confirming multiple people were shot. happening today former mixed martial arts champion cain

velasquez is scheduled to appear in court. back in august he pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges. investigators say he shot into a pickup truck in san jose not far from coyote valley. the truck was carrying a man accused of sexually assaulting one of velasquez's young relatives. that man was unharmed but another man was struck by the gunfire. authorities later arrested velasquez in morgan hill and he's been held without bail since the time of his arrest. two juries deliberating in the kristin smart murder trial after a jury was absent on friday. court officials said the jury is scheduled to return this morning. the two separate juries are deciing whether paul flores is guilty of smart's murder and whether his father, ruben flores, helped cover it up. the jury for ruben flores was told to retart their

deliberations thursday after a juror was excused and replaced. to decision 2022 in san francisco three weeks from now voters will decide the future of a popular stretch of roadway closed since the start of the pandemic. two similar measures focus on jfk drive through golden gate park first closed by supervisors two and a half years ago. proposition i calls for traffic to fully reopen there and along the great highway. proposition j, meantime, would allow for continued recreational use of jfk drive. people who support the jfk drive closures say the popular roadway is now much safer for those who enjoy biking, jogging and walking. opponents call it a question of access for people who need it. >> to have one space for us where we can relax and be safe and people have just responded for the need. >> seniors are overwhelmingly in favor of opening up jfk because we miss the access we had and we also understand what it's like to be denied access.

what we typically see for the middle of october. hayward a high of 71. 71 in mountain view. dublin reaching 77. 80 in fair field. santa rosa will be reaching up to about 75 degrees. it will be warming up for midweek. so i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike, you're seeing an unexpected backup in parts of the east bay. unexpected but the crash is cleared. the bad news the folks off the dublin interchange still delayed. stay to the freeways and stay to 680 south down to sunol because of the recovery happening there. now here is the shift folks are hearing about all the problems going on for south 680. there's a crash toward the dublin interchange. the castro valley y, they're all portion of the tri-valley. again, south 680 all clear. allow yourself another 10-15

criminal justice -- in criminal justice all my life. you can watch that on the "today" show coming up at 7:00. you can find those on facebook. 6:45 right now. happening today a judge will hear theranos' founder elizabeth holmes' motion to obtain a new criminal trial. she is awaiting sentencing for her fraud conviction and lying to customers about the bogus blood testing technology. her attorneys are claiming misconduct tied to witness testimony from ex-theranos lab director that witness has since clarified his testimony was entirely truthful. jordan poole with word of his massive contract extension but it's his comments about the punch seen around the world grabbing more headlines. the new four-year deal is worth at least $123 million with

lunch time. let's start out with breakfast this morning. i just want some coffee. it's hot coffee because some of those temperatures are chilly. take a live look at the golden gate bridge where the fog has rolled away. so we're seeing a different morning here. a setup where the clouds are up higher. a disturbance off the cost. drizzle and sprinkles here and there. we are still seeing the fog moving around santa rosa where visibility is down to half of a mile. allow for extra time to get to work and be really careful in the school zones. in santa rosa drop-off times only 49 degrees. you're sending the kids off to school with warm jackets on. at pickup time, it's still mostly cloudy but at least it will feel nicer. the seven-day forecast showing it will warm up the next few days but today only low 70s and it's not going to be our usual morning where we start out with clouds and then see it clear out. weapon see those clouds linger throughout much of the day.

so martinez reaches 77 degrees. oakland a high of 71. as we take it into tomorrow temperatures get a little bit of a boost and it's going to start to warm up for our inland valleys but peaking on wednesday up to 93 degrees in fairfield. we compare that to the mid-70s in half moon bay but we're not just yet done with those 90s for some of our warmest spots inland. we'll feel that in livermore. let's compare wednesday to the weekend. take a look at the big drop in temperatures. we're going from 91 on wednesday to a high of 69 on saturday. but there will be some big changes ahead. we're going to see some colder air coming in and with that there could be some showers just to our north. i think we're going to miss out on this chance of rain but we will have a better chance next week and possibly our first year of snowfall. so i'm really excited about that. we're going to see temperatures going from mid-70s inland today to mid-80s and then back down for the weekend.

and then for san francisco. it's mostly just going to be a mix of sun and clouds and a little bit warmer midweek. mike, you are looking at concerns for the peninsula and the east bay. either side of the bay. the newest crash northbound 101 right around the san antonio off ramp. reports of a couple of lanes blocked. two middle lanes blocked by a crash and we see slowing heading to palo alto. that's the concern because the build here for the south bay is pushing north through that area where we typically see slowing about now. as we look to the east bay we have recovery. the earlier crash cleared. look at all the traffic now. southbound 880. the two areas are showing an unusual pattern as well. typical here for this area of highway 437 and the bay bridge. back to you. thank you, mike. 6:53. a meal kit company will soon say

welcome back. we are moving you forward with a look at our top stories on "today in the bay." police investigating a double shooting in san francisco's fillmore neighborhood between eddy and turk west of jefferson square park. reports witnesses say up to 20 shots fired. no updates on the two victims this morning. gunfire also struck several nearby parked cars. so far police are only saying multiple people were shot. a dramatic scene playing out overnight after a chase the chp says stretched from the south bay to the peninsula. they say it started around 1:00

in the morning in san jose as officers were trying to pull a man over for traffic violations. about an hour later that driver, who had taken off, crashed and it led to a brief standoff where officers fired projectiles at the car's back window. the driver eventually got out and surrendered. he was taken into custody after being evaluated by medics at the scene. a sense of relief is starting to set in in stockton where police this weekend announced the release of a suspect in a series of deaths believed to be the work of a serial killer. 43-year-old wesley brownlee was taken into custody early saturday morning as he was, quote, out hunting. they also described him as being on a mission to kill. brownlee is accused in the deaths of six men in stockton and one man in oakland. he's also believed to have shot a woman from stockton who survived. developing now in contra costa county experts are monitoring air quality with the

recent flaring up of a fire way back in june. it started in the pittsburg marsh in the delta. firefighters managed to put most of it out, but now it's smoldering again underground in the naturally occurring peat soil. air district quality leaders say air quality levels in nearby pittsburg are in the good zone. so far not unhealthy. let's get a look at the forecast as we see the sun starting to peek out. it's a beautiful sunrise. taking a look at san francisco, we can see it this morning. we're not seeing the dense fog for much of the bay area. visibility is low in parts of the north bay. we're headed for 74 degrees today and will see a mix of sun and clouds even as our temperatures warm up over the next few days which you can see by the weekend. it's cooling down with some rain just to our north. and the crash i was worried about coming into view in sunnyvale has cleared. just shy of san antonio road. i saw a burst of taillights traveling north. that's what we expect for the
