sunnyvale condo. the damage left behind as crews work to save the celebrity who hosted a mayoral debate in oakland and the number one topic they discussed. it's wednesday morning and a good morning to you. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. first to the bay area talking about being shaken up after one of the largest earthquakes we've had in eight years. >> that 5.1 magnitude hit the south bay with at least four aftershocks. our entire team broke into programming to bring you the updates with many in our newsroom even feeling the shaking. now "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us live this morning. kris, this is a reminder to everyone to be prepared because we never know when the next one will hit. >> reporter: we never know just like we didn't know yesterday. i think i might be the only person in the bay area who did

not feel it. i was on the roadway at the time, so i was always driving. it didn't even register. but because of the nbc bay area app i got phone calls from family in new york and colorado and texas all making sure that i was okay because they have the app, too. biggest quake we've had in eight years, longest one according to a l it not knowing if it was going to stop or not. >> reporter: fortunately that 5.1 didn't cause any widespread damage. some people did have mirrors and photos and things fall off the walls and off table tops and what not. it was a remind they're with a number of faults in the bay area it is always time to be ready and always time to secure those large items in your home and work place. >> we know from the loma prieta earthquake, for example, also from the northridge earthquake,

half the injuries in the big earthquakes are because either people fall over or things fall on people, things fall out of the bookshelves, for example, behind me. and so if everybody gets a warning and if everybody drops, covers and holds on, then we're going to reduce the number of injuries in a very significant way. >> reporter: about 95,000 people in the bay area got an early warning on their phones via the my shake app on iphones and an automatic alert on androids. the director of the berkeley seismology lab says it worked as it was supposed to as a quake detector, not a quake predictor, because we can't do that. there are grants for you if you want to make some retrogrades to your house, earthquake improvements to your home. there are about $3,000 grants available through the state and more people are now eligible for that. i will post that on my social

tham spread throughout the attic. the cause of that fire is under investigation. a follow-up on a fire in san leandro that started yesterday and is now contained. it was sparked at an underground garage. multiple cars were on fire. there's still no word on how the fire started. new economic news for potential home buyers and sellers that could help you making it in the bay. home prices are declining at a record rate. now it's still higher than a year ago but gains are shrinking at a faster pace on record. so san francisco is seeing the largest monthly decline for home buyers and renters according to some the city dropped to become the nation's third most expensive market behind boston when it comes to renting a one-bedroom apartment. bay area realtor tells the

in the upper 40s as you head out the door and slowly warming up. 66 degrees in san jose and fremont. 73 in concord and some low 70s for much of the north bay reaching 71 in napa. san francisco only reaches 64 today. and then going into the day tomorrow just a touch warmer for a few spots, but we're still keeping the slightly cooler than normal weather compared to what we typically see this time of year. we will see more slight changes in the forecast, and i'm looking way ahead to when we'll get some rain. more on that in a few minutes. mike, where can we find some lower gas prices? kari, santa clara county, it's arco again but on snell. $4.79 a gallon. contra costa county $4.67 at

super food and liquor on willow pass road. vallejo it's $4.79 at national petroleum on main street. some good options all under $5. the smooth drive, it's moving very smoothly. we even now have a few things we're watching. berkeley, eastbound 80, the major slowing has cleared in the last few minutes but they may show another slowdown because a traffic break. the taillights were stopped tore about two minutes. now restored for traffic. i believe they've cleared the last of the that and i'll show you why you need to use the dublin interchange for the time being. we'll talk about changes coming off the dublin area as well in the next report. back to you. >> thanks, mike. completing your family with a furry friend. still ahead on "today in the bay" at 5:25, if you want a dog but not too sure if you can handle it, we'll show you why a senior dog could be the right fit.

upper 40s and just a few clouds in the mix through about 9:00. and then sunshine the rest of the day as it warms up. we'll be at about 66 degrees at noon and not warming up much more from there. a cool day but we'll talk about what's ahead in our forecast in a few minutes. and a live look outside to show us how things are shaping up there. golden gate bridge, those headlights from the top of the screen. there's the robin williams tunnel down into san francisco, both directions clearing as they've cleared most of the cones. we'll show you the changes and the cones that you'll find and the reason why they're there in the tri-valley coming up. well, good morning. a very happy wednesday to you. word is elon musk has talked to his bankers and is ready to close the deal with twitter by the end of the week. now twitter's share price is a really good proxy for the chances of the deal closing. as that number gets closer to 54.20, the price musk agreed to, the more likely it is the deal will close, at least in investors' minds.

alphabet reported profits and they were exceptionally disappointing to investors. no word of layoffs or anything yet but no doubt google will continue to slow hirin they will hireyoutube. the first time youtube's ad numbers. you see fewer ads for finance, crypto, personal loans. chipotle says it's raising prices as sales slow and it seems the customer base is changing because of it. lower income customers coming in less often says the company. chipotle has raised prices several times this year. gdp numbers tomorrow and we expect the numbers will actually rise. and i'll talk more about this tomorrow but this weird thing of gdp will be up, unemployment is at record low, the economy by all measures is doing

phenomenally except inflation. inflation continues to be the problem. >> and that's what hits everybody's wallet every day. >> everybody. even candy. >> shopping for halloween may be more of a trick than a treat here. the labor department says prices are up more than 13% from last year. now this is the largest ever annual increase and those candymakers say the rise in labor costs, higher prices for flour and sugar are mostly to blame. hershey's says that it hasn't actually raised prices for some of its candy since june and mars says it's absorbed extra costs where possible. kids, if you're up this early, if you want to impress your neighbors and get the best out of the trick-or-treat stash, well, this is a key for you right here, costume. more than 60% of parents in a

yesterday i actually put up a poll asking if you would spend some money on a ticket there. some people say i'm all in. 67%. others are like, uh-uh, i'm saving my $2. the choice is yours. just a little curious, is it an impulse buy? >> marcus may have had the clou to winning. you just go to the lottery council and say trick-or-treat. >> oh, yeah. >> give me something good to eat. if you don't, i don't care. you know the rest. old school. we have some nice weather for halloween, too. it's looking pretty good. our temperatures stay cool and i think the rain is going to be holding off as well. let's get a look at our hiking forecast. hopefully you'll have a chance to get out and enjoy the sunshine and the fall like weather and do some leaf peeping as well. our temperatures start out in the south bay with some mid-40s. it is a chilly start but at 10:00 it's starting to feel a little bit better. still keeping the jacket on through noon and then for the afternoon we'll see temperatures
