an ode to kari and i. ♪ i drink wine red, red wine ♪ it's quickly approaching 6:00 for you. rattled and shaken? >> i looked around and saw a bunch moving. >> the bay area buzzing after that 5.1 earthquake. coverage on when you can expect to feel more aftershocks and break down the history of that fault. up in smoke, a fire engulfs a south bay home. the damage as crews work to save what they can. and a cooling housing market is helping those trying to make it in the bay. the reason some believe buyers and even renters will be reaping the benefits this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. and here we are wednesday morning for you. thanks so much for allowing us to be a participate of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. everybody is talking about it. did you feel it?

more importantly, are you ready for the next big one? >> the 5.1 quake on the calaveras fault yesterday didn't cause widespread damage. our hose updates with many in our newsroom feeling it. but it was not only the only fault in the area that could rumble at any time. kris, talk to us about this. what should people be doing now? what do we do today? >> reporter: we all experienced it but we didn't all feel it. i feel like i'm the only person who did not feel that 5.1 quake yesterday. i was driving in the car, so i think that's why i missed it. i know i got notifications on my phone and also my parents got notifications because they have the nbc bay area app. this was the biggest, strongest quake we've had in about eight years here in the immediate bay area and it felt like it went on

for a long time for a lot of people. >> i was very scared and i think because of loma prieta just waiting for it to keep going not knowing if it was going to stop or not. >> reporter: now, fortunately that 5.1 quake didn't cause widespread damage. some h mirrors and things falling from always time to secure large items in your home and work space. >> we know from the loma prieta earthquake, also from the northridge earthquake that about half of the injuries in the big earthquakes are because people fall over or things fall on people. fall out of the bookshelves, for example, behind me. if everybody gets a warning and drops cover and holds on, we will reduce the number of injuries in a significant way.

>> reporter: about 95,000 people got that early warning on their phones via the my shake app or on iphones or the automatic alert the android phones put out. the director says the my shake app worked as it was supposed to as a shake and quake detector not a quake predictor. take a look at this map. if your home is in one of the 500 high-risk zip codes, all the areas in blue, you might qualify for an earthquake retrofit grant. if you have applied for the brace and bolt program but didn't qualify, try again. this year the state added more eligible zip codes and you can apply through november 29. $3,000 is certainly helpful if you're trying to retrofit your home. we know the calaveras fault, just because it shook yesterday, doesn't mean it won't shake again. meteorologist kari hall has that. the calaveras fault, like

many of the eight main faults we have in the bay area, is a right lateral strike flip fault. we can visualize it base dli with two plates sliding past one another and they're not smooth. they have bumps and hills that get hung up. they build up enough pressure and snap loose, and we feel the shaking. >> interesting, kari. if you ever feel the shaking and want to know how strong it was, where it's centered, check out our shake tracker at nbcbayarea.com/quaketracker. new overnight a two-alarm fire breaks out at a condo in sunnyvale. this happened about 2:15 this morning along belfrey way. new video showing heavy smoke as the crews work to put it out. firefighters say the flames spread throughout the attic of the home. there are no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

now to a follow-up for you. a stabbing in the city. investigators say monday night a 16-year-old was found in the parking lot of lynwood school suffering from stab wounds. the victim is in critical condition. a second victim, a 17-year-old, was also assaulted and treated for minor injuries. police say no students were involved but the school district says it plans to provide counselors as needed. new economic news for potential home buyers and sellers that could help you make it in the bay. according to one key metric, it's still higher than a year ago but gains are shrinking at the fastest pace on record. san francisco is seeing the largest monthly decline for home buyers and renters. according to zumper, the third most expensive market behind
