>> prices are going down at a record rate. tom costello is going to have everything we need to know. of course, we will begin with last night's big debate in pennsylvania. >> this was highly anticipated not only because of questions concerning democratic john fetterman's health after his stroke six months ago, but also because this race could decide which party controls the senate, and that will affect every single american come next year. how it played out. let's start with nbc's dasha burns in harrisburg. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this debate was highly anticipated not just by voters in pennsylvania, but around the country. it's an extremely tight race, just a couple of points separating these candidates in the polls. in a battle against one of the most familiar faces on american television, many tuned in to see how fetterman would fair after suffering a stroke earlier this year, and the stakes could not have been higher. in a race that could help decide the balance of power in congress, pennsylvania democrat john fetterman and republican mehmet oz neck-and-neck in the polls finally face to face on the debate stage. >> i'm running to serve pennsylvania. he is running to use

contradictory comments. >> i do support fracking and i don't -- i don't -- i support fracking and i stand -- and i do support fracking. >> reporter: fetterman says he is fit to serve citing a letter from his doctor but he would not commit to releasing his full medical records. >> i believe if my doctor believes that i'm fit to serve and that's what i believe is appropriate -- >> reporter: the celebrity tv doctor never directly addressing fetterman's health but saying this during an exchange on education. >> i visited vocational schools. obviously, i wasn't clear enough for you to understand this. >> reporter: a point where oz is not clear, how he would vote on a 15-week abortion ban introduced by republican senator, lindsey graham. >> i want women, doctors, political leaders, the democracy that allowed our nation to thrive to put the best idea forward so states can decide for themselves. >> reporter: a clear difference from his opponent. >> my campaign would fight for roe v. wade and if given the opportunity to codify it in into

7:07 am
let's turn to hallie jackson. john fetterman said it. the elephant in the room was his health, recent stroke, his fitness to serve. how did it play in the room? >> reporter: so, i talked to folks in the room, on the phone with the campaign advisor after the debate and here is where i think it's coming down for democrats who are largely acknowledging that john fetterman is clearly still recovering from a stroke. there were accommodations made, the closed captioning to conduct this debate. there is a sense among people close to the lieutenant governor that voters understand, he had a health issue, he is recovering, he is putting himself out there. they are going after oz for the line about abortion access, between a woman, a doctor and political leaders. but i talked with democratic allies who questioned whether it will actually help that fetterman was on the debate stage and questions overall on both sides of the aisle how this moves the needle for pennsylvania voters. this is such a close race.
7:08 am
every vote will matter and there is still a question mark of how voters will respond and react. >> and on the issues, we saw some themes play out that have, obviously, been -- it's a micro cosam of what is happening in other races where republicans are hitting hard on the economy and crime, democrats turning to abortion. we saw that. >> reporter: you are right, savannah. when you look at, for example, the abortion access answer from oz, when you look at how oz went after fetterman on crime and the economy, we are seeing that not just in pennsylvania, but you look at other debates that were happening in places like new york, for example, where crime and the economy were issues that republicans were really trying to hit hard on democrats. these are issues that are going to matter to voters in the next 13 days before election day. you saw them on stage and they are going to continue to play out over the next two weeks. >> hallie jackson, thank you. supreme court justice samuel alito says that leak of the

today it's shifting so slightly, and now banks are saying they may have to incentivize. even with inflation burning red hot keeping prices up on just about everything we buy, there is a sector, housing, where costs are actually cooling down. while nationally home prices in august were 13% higher than last year, that's actually down more than 2% from the month before. the largest month-over-month decline since the index started 35 years ago. >> a pause and a breath is really what the housing market is experiencing. >> reporter: the biggest price drops in the west. san francisco down 4.3%, seattle down 3.9%, san diego down 2.8. the driving factor, of course, rising mortgage rates now nearly 7%, pushing many prospective
