show, an attack on people in a car and gunfire. whew, this is around 12:30 this morning. we can't show you the moments that led up to the gunfire. we watched the video itself and it shows people jumping on the car windshield and people set off only to do doughnuts in the intersection coming dangerously close to spectators as they usually do in a side show. seconds after shots were fired, police showed up in a car and pursuant ended a few miles away where it appears multiple people were detained. right now, we have calls and emails to santa clara police. and we'll update you on this active investigation throughout the day. emotions are still running

high for house speaker nancy pelosi and her family. her husband attacked inside the home. here's a live about at the general hospital where paul pelosi is recovering after major surgery. he was attacked by an intruder in his house that he shared with house speaker nancy pelosi. >> reporter: we saw two suvs and a police escort leaving the hospital. we don't know for sure if speaker nancy pelosi was inside. but she was spotted arriving at the hospital to be by her husband's side. it was just before 3:00 when investigators say paul pelosi was attacked in his pacific heights home. sources tell us the suspect tried to tie mr. pelosi up. somehow, he managed to dial 911 when the suspect wasn't paying attention. >> there's a male in his home he's going to wait for his wife stated that he doesn't know where the male and advised.

>> reporter: police rushing to the home for a wellness check. the 911 dispatcher who took the call is being recognized her instincts. that dispatcher sensing something was wrong. at a news conference, the police chief explaining what someone or. >> they observed mr. pelosi and mr. depape with a hand on the hammer. >> reporter: police giving the command to drop the hammer. >> mr. depape took the hammer away from mr. pelosi and immediately attacked him with the hammer. >> reporter: the suspect attacked and both were rushed to the hospital. they're explaining that public service families should feel safe. >> families don't sign up for this to be harmed. and it is wrong. everybody should be disgusted. about what happened this

morning. >> reporter: san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins is charging david depape with attempted murder. residential burglary. elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon. >> anytime somebody is intentionally targeted somebody who is a leader, not just locally, but in this country it's extremely disturbing. >> reporter: also disturbing for the president of the united states, speaking about the attack on paul pelosi during a midterm campaign event in pennsylvania. >> enough is enough is enough. every person with good conscience needs to clearly and unambiguously stand up against the violence in our policies regards of what your policies are. >> reporter: michelle herd, "today in the bay." >> we're learning more about the suspect, 42-year-old david depape is still in the hospital but when he is released, he'll be booked on felony charges.

there's no motive but police say depape shouted "where is nancy" when he was in the home. we tracked down his last known address in berkeley. "today in the bay" melissa ward continues the coverage. >> reporter: san francisco police say 42-year-old david depape forced his way through the pacific heights home in the back door and violently assaulted paul pelosi with a hammer. depape will face charges including attempted homicide and elder abuse. david depape's stepfather said he was going to canada about 20 years ago. police described him as a tree transient. people inside told agents they hadn't seen depape in years. but neighbors have seen him more recently. >> he's never approached me or my partner at all. but i've seen him helping out around the house with yard work.

>> reporter: these neighbors recognized him with the photos shared by the "san francisco chronicle." >> i didn't know him personally, just seen him passing, that's it. >> reporter: and our investigation dug up sites with someone who bottled conspiracy theories and most have been taken down but one site is up where depape is listed as the writer. he ranted about the 2020 election, covid and expressed anti-semitic views. investigators say more recently his posts lean towards far right extremism. while police say they can't share the motive publicly, but they do believe the attack was intentional. it's been quiet except for a woman who dropped by to leave flowers and words of healing for the pelosi family. reaction from washington has been swift. vice president harris calling it an extreme act of violence.

your time is 7:40. good morning, buenos dias, we've got a slow and steady start to our weekend, and the weather is definitely helping keep us nice and beautiful pattern in the sky. you can see a colder system thas going to influence the drop in temperatures but also rain chances. i'll get to that in a second. first, i want to get to those daytime highs. look at this, we're starting in the 30s, in santa rosa, 36 degrees, napa, 49. and closer to 12:00, 1:00 hour, we'll start to see the temperatures bump up into the 50s, low 60s. and your daytime highs, very

comfortable and fall-like around here. we're talking upper 60s. oakland, 68 degrees, palo alto, 69. if you notice, this is typically a warmer zone through areas like martinez, concord and livermore. mid-70s on the map now we will see an area of cloud cover heading into the afternoon. what we're really monitoring is going to be this colder system from alaska and the cold front is going to bring a chain of scenery. but also the sierra, let'stahoe about 25 degrees right now. notice, we don't have a ton of snow. of course, we saw the sierra snow pack melt pretty early this year. hopefully with the storm at higher elevation areas, about 7,000 feet will get a nice dusting of snow heading into late monday, tuesday and wednesday. those are going to be the main days before your commute can be impacted.

there are no winter storm advisoies in place now. i have a feeling towards monday and tuesday, we could very well see those issues. expect to see gusty winds, overnight lows dipping below freezing. and sierra snow in the higher elevation areas but the system is bringing a chance of rain in the bay area. look at this now, notice a lot of this is going to start moving in late monday and into early tuesday. no impact here, to your halloween forecast, aside from the fact it's going to feel cold out there. that rain chance moves in, starting early tuesday morning. and heading into wednesday, look what happens to the sierra. you can see the buildup of the blue/white/pink color, that's the sierra snow. that's going to be anrainfall. let's talk drought conditions, unfortunately, 43% of the state of california remains under extreme drought. it's going to take a whole lot more rain tuesday, wednesday. that leaves a chance for rain on

sun. it may be chilly, but, hey, it's clear and beautiful. take it any day. over to south bay, a high school principal is being hailed as a student after apparently overdosing with fentanyl in his school office. "today in the bay" was there at the high school with the exclusive story. >> reporter: san jose police say this is not necessarily a local school crisis, but rather, a community crisis that just happens to trickle on to campuses. and luckily, more and more of those campuses are prepared. it happened on wednesday at overfelt high school. the student allegedly swallowed a pill laced with fentanyl and overdosed just after school ended. >> basically, you go into a position where you can ultimately die. >> reporter: but police say the principal's quick thinking likely kept this boy from a much different ending. he gave the student narcan, and

when police arrived the student was on her way back and breathing. >> the school did a good job with medical personnel and curtailing a medical emergency. >> reporter: the principal said there was nothing about it. he credits his team. >> you know that same student is going to be struggling is a har to break. the people nationwide died from overdoses involving o. the drug is described as being 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. and now the county is pushing for free narcan kits across the region including in schools. and overfelt teachers and staff members are trained to administer the life saving medicine. and in the district sent parents a letter. >> we're trying to raise awareness, so that if this

happens in our community in our neighborhoods with our families that we know how to keep each other safe. >> reporter: police want to make it clear when they respond to school after an overdoshgs they're not there to criminalize the victims. they're trying to get info on the person providing the drugs, "today in the bay." >> there was a good outcome there, but we have been looking into why most schools in the bay area do not have narcan for this type of emergency. even though schools can get it for free. the investigative unit began to talk with the school superintendent about what he is doing to m narcan available on the full-time investigation. it's national drug takeback day. if you have old or expired prescriptions this is where you can get rid of them or off your hands. the event is dropped off at
