making the case on the economy and outperforming an unpopular president. >> kristen welker for us. thank you. a programming note. stay with us on election night. savannah, lester and team will have complete live coverage as the results come in starting tuesday, 8 eastern/5 pacific on nbc. the ongoing effort to rein in inflation, the federal reserve raising the interest rate by three-quarters of a point. now it's at a 14-year high. >> that rate impacts your credit cards, your car loans and it sent the stock market tumbling, the dow dropped 500, nasdaq down 3%. >> melissa, i mean, everybody expected this. the fed did exactly what the markets were expecting and yet they still tumbled. why is that? >> we learned a couple of things in the news conference after the statement was released. first, that the endpoint of rates at the end of this

tightening campaign will be higher. so when the fed is done raising rates, that final rate will be higher than what we thought. also we learned that the fed will keep the rates at that level, at a higher level for more sustained period of time. once the fed reaches the endpoint rate, it will reverse course and start cutting rates, and the fed put that to bed yesterday. >> what is the fed looking at? like what are the numbers they look at and say that's a good number, that means thins have turned around? >> the monthly inflation numbers, consumer price index number that we get. we are getting employment rate number this friday. the unemployment rate remains 3.5%, a half-century low. the fed needs to see that tick higher. i know that sounds awful to most americans but we need to see that to get the economic a little bit slower here. >> does this mean we are headed to a recession? some say when we had two quarters of consecutive negative

grove that is the traditional definition of the recession. does that make a recession more likely? >> not necessarily. the fed was asked specifically about the notion of, quote, unquote, soft landing that we could end this campaign and escape relatively unscathed and he said the window is getting smaller but it's possible. a lot of people are economists, they think it is much more likely that we will not endin that scenario, the best-case scenario. >> thank you. okay. earlier we heard the president mention that brutal attack on paul pelosi. this morning we are learning even more about that assault and the man now charged with attempted murder. miguel almaguer right there in san francisco with details. hey, miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. according to court documents david depape told police he was going to break nancy pelosi's

kneecaps if she didn't tell him the truth. prosecutors say the assault on paul pelosi was politically motivated according to court documents david depape telling officers i'm sick of the insane expletive level of lies coming out of washington, d.c. i came here to have a little chat with his wife, but this morning depape's ex-partner ande suspect used to have progressive ideas. >> reporter: she is currently in prison for stalking and attempting to abduct a 14-year-old boy. it's been at least seven years since she last spoke with the suspect, but she says he showed signs of mental health issues when they were together. when you say he had mental problems, can you give me some examples? >>

. ar attempted murder. his attorney hinting his mental state could be a possible defense. and nancy pelosi's 82-year-old husband remains in the hospital, authorities are now looking into how the intruder was able to get past security cameras and break into their home. the complaint says a private security guard working near the pelosi home on the night of the attack saw a man dressed in black carrying a large bag. of after hearing banging that security guard never called police. nbc news has confirmed capitol police in washington, d.c., have the ability to monitor pelosi's san francisco home 24 hours a day, but during the attack no one was watching the security camera feed because the speaker of the house wasn't home. still the violent home invasion raising new questions about security for elected officials

to a nightmare. a staggering spike in babies and kids with severe cases of rsv or flooding hospitals and e.r.s nationwide.g 23 states and d.c. with pediatric bed occupancy rates above 75% while missouri's rsv case count four times higher than last year's winter peak. struggling to breathe, 10 day old pippa became one of those cases. the mom rushed her to a kansas city city hospital last month where the baby took nine days to fully recover. >> you give birth to a healthy baby and all of a sudden she is in the hospital on oxygen which is an emotional roller coaster. >> reporter: in st. louis another alarming trend. severe symptoms like pneumonia in school-age kids. experts say years of masking and covid isolation left kids' immune systems weakened. >> babies and kids as old as 5

just that. this morning controversial washington commanders owner dan snyder again in the spotlight. espn reporting that the u.s. attorney's office in the eastern district of virginia has opened a criminal investigation into the commanders over alleged financial impropriety citing two sources familiar with the mother. the commanders law firm calling it untrue. snyder and his wife announced wednesday they hired bank of america to consider potential transactions, including selling all or a part of their storied nfl franchise. for a community that has wanted him out for a while, it's huge. for a league that wants him out, it's huge. >> reporter: washington's football team hasn't won a playoff game since 2006. but the team's biggest challenges have occurred off the field, including a long running debate over whether to change the team'se seen as racist, a change snyder opposed, alleged

sixth time this year, interest rates are going up, we talked about inflation ad nauseam, prices of everything is going up if we want to be smarter with you are money, where do we start? >> save. this is the time to save we are walking into uncertain times. you just talked about interest rates going up let's think about how better going to save. many of us have sort of forgotten. pre-pandemic we had a lot of good savings habits, but during the pandemic government support, there were stimulus, we were naturally saving and we were all home there weren't a lot of places to spend. since we have come out of the pandemic, we are spending again, dying to visit friends and family, going out to eat and prices are high and we are spending we have to be concerned about that because that's how you rack up credit card debt. start thinking about how many -- start to save, track your spending at the end of the month look at ways, did i need to spend here, is this a waste of time? cut that sending out things are a little bigger than that, a short-term savings goal, think about how much do i need to save and how long do i have

until i get to that date i want you to divide that number by the amount of paychecks until you get there. for example, say you want to get to january to get through the holiday bills, maybe it's five paychecks, you know it's going to be $100 a paycheck. so take that $100 each paycheck in its own account by the end of jab you will have that money. >> then what should you do with that money >> put it in an emergency fund don't just say i'll like stick it in a jar in the kitchen no, no, no three to six months of your living expenses, try to put that away in a separate account we know that unemployment could be going up, these are, again, uncertain times. create a separate account and if you have got that money, three to six months of living expenses over there, you are going to feel a whole lot better. if you have that money already aside, you go, yo, steph, i'm ready to spend, i want to invest in the markets, invest in the markets if you have got like a five to seven-year time horizon.

as she struggled with alzheimer's an entrepreneurs he says taught him invaluable lessons about how to cope as the person you love slowly disappears >> reporter: from the moment they fell in love as teens, martin schreiber and his wife are elaine irp inseparable as wisconsin's governor marty relied on elaine as a constant support and doting mom to their four children. >> there was nothing more loving, more attending, more of everything that you could ever want in a life partner. >> reporter: but in their 60s, marty noticed changes in elaine. his brilliant wife becoming forgettable and confused these were the first signs of alzheimer's. and as elaine slowly declined, marty had to become her support in ways he never imagined. >> when your partner has alzheimer's, you can feel like a lone wolf. >> reporter: now in his book, my two elaines, marty shares his caregiving journey

one full of heartbreak but also of hope. can you explain to people what you you mean by my two elaines >> well, the first elaine that was my friend, my advisor, my companion. the second elaine began to appear some 19 years ago and that was when she would get lost driving to and from places she had been going to and from for years. i had to let go of the first elaine to embrace the second elaine and help her. >> reporter: marty says the biggest challenge was learning to living in elaine's new world of alzheimer's, accepting that her reality was now very different than his >> when i tried to keep her in my world, no elaine, it didn't happen on a thursday, it happened on a friday, it wasn't the joneses, it was the smiths, her life was more miserable. and so i began to realize that if i could help eliaine live he best life pos pbl by joining her world. if she thinks it happens on a thursday, that's okay. as miserable and ugly as this

disease is, we can at least snatch some moments of joy. >> reporter: to cope with her memory lapses, marty began practicing what he calls therapeutic fibbing. if elaine miss stickingly thought her parents were alive, he just played along rather than upset her with the truth still, caregiving took a toll on him. >> i wasn't getting enough sleep. i didn't get enough exercise. >> reporter: you talk about the role of caregiver changing your definition of manhood for yourself >> i thought i was the man and i could take care e of this, i promised elaine for better or worse. at the same time, there is this grieving process that you go through because you see your loved one die a little bit every day and i concluded that if you want to be a real man, what you really want to do is ask for help >> reporter: he started therapy and when elaine's needs became too great he moved her into a care facility.
