moment now. >> next week, i hope we take a good hard look at what we're up against and how we can make a difference in the world. >> with the midterms just three days away, governor newsom is putting the race aside to focus on the election as a whole. the event he attended today to get more californians out to the polls. and a peninsula family devastated tonight. two people killed in a crash that may have involved street racing. the news at 8:00 starts now. thanks for joining us for this special edition of nbc bay area news. i'm gia vang. we're learning more about a deadly crash on the peninsula. the two people killed parents of young children. their daughters in the car when the crash happened. nbc bay area's alyssa gourd joins us. you spoke with the family members of those victims?

>> reporter: that's right. and the physical impact of that crash was so severe that here on el camino real, you can see where one of those cars was propelled up into the housing development. and police have not released how exactly this crash happened. however, we have spoken with multiple witnesses who said they saw cars racing down the street at the time and running into another vehicle. neighbors here have said it's just been heartbreaking to watch it all unfold. flowers marked the spot where two people were killed during a fiery crash on el camino real and singer avenue friday. this man who didn't want to be identified tell us the people kills were his brother and sister-in-law. their two seven-year-old daughters were in the car but are expected to be okay. he says the family was driving home from dinner when another car hit theirs. >> pushed their car all the way

down the sidewalk couple hundred feet. >> reporter: his two nieces now left without parents. >> as a parent, it is something you should never have to do, tell children they no longer have parents. >> reporter: he says the girls are in the hospital with minor injuries and have been told about their parents' death. >> some kind of justice found so we can continue to support their daughters. >> reporter: the 17-year-old driver of that other car as well as two passengers were also taken to the hospital. they are expected to be okay. redwood city police are asking anyone that witnessed this crash or who has additional information to get in touch with him. alyssa goard, nbc bay area news. we are following breaking news. a power outages at both terminals at san jose international. it started at 6:30 this evening. this is causing some delays and crews are impacted. crews are working on getting power restored.

we have a crew headed to the airport and we will bring you updates as soon as we get them. turning our attention to the weather, here is a foggy look at san francisco tonight. parts of the bay area saw some sprinkles today and more wet weather could be headed your way. rob is tracking the rain chances for us and joins with an updated time line. >> drizzle to light rain at times. still seeing that now around the golden gate bridge. we had to crank up the sensitivity to pick up smaller rain drops. you can see passing san francisco down into san jose and in and out of light rain at times from the afternoon into the evening. this is pretty much the pattern we will see for the next few hours. notice what happens as we head to tomorrow morning. sunny breaks at times. partly sunny skies to head into sunday. as we head into sunday night, you can see on the futurecast, we have more significant cold front that will bring the peak of the rain into the storm. as we head into monday

afternoon, there is a chance we could see storms around the bay area with heavy snow. we have a winter storm warning up in the sierra between sunday and monday, they could see one to two feet of snow and snow levels dropping down closer to 4,000 feet, which means places like hamilton might see a dusting of snow as we hit the middle of the week. a lot of active weather headed our way, and it gets started to the evening hours now. download our free nbc bay area app. as the rain moves in, we will send straight up-to-the-minute alerts to your phone. you can customize the alerts to your neighborhood. twitter is moving fast to launch twitter blue. they launched in preparation for the revamped subscription service. the big update, users will be able to buy the blue check mark to signal the user's identity is verified by twitter.

historically it has been reserved for politicians, journalists, celebrities and organizations. many experts say the change is being driven by musk's need to make the service more profitable and all users should be aware. >> my general advice to people is to diversify their information. do not let twitter be your only platform of information. you need to actually make really important decisions in this world. this new check mark now that's going to be available to everyone for pay, it does complicate the matter of trying to figure out who is who. >> meanwhile, twitter co-founder jack dorsey is apologizing after hundreds of employees were laid off. he tweeted today he realizes people are angry with him and takes responsibility for growing the company too quickly. the midterm elections are nearly upon us, and that means heavy hitters and politics are making the rounds to get out the votes. governor newsom was in san francisco today doing just that,

drumming up support for democrats around the state. here's christy smith. >> reporter: governor gavin newsom came to the city's mission district where volunteers gathered to text and poll voters. he even got to work. the countdown is on for the midterm election. >> i'm telling everybody that election day is tomorrow. election day ends on tuesday. make sure they sign them and date them and get them in the mail. >> reporter: he is with equality california and has been reaching out to voters. >> they forget that election day is coming, so we get a lot of votes but also a lot of people have not got that ballot yet. >> reporter: the governor is running for re-election, but that wasn't the issue today.

will rollins is in a close race. it is one of many congressional races people are keeping a close eye. depending on the results tuesday, the balance of power in the house and senate could change. newsom says it is important to understand the national landscape. >> it will determine the fate and future of freedoms and liberties that, frankly, many of us have come to take for granted. >> reporter: the chairman of the san francisco republican party and challenging house speaker nancy pelosi for her congressional seat. he believes his party's efforts were working. >> i'm expecting a big day for republicans, not just in california on tuesday but also across the country. >> reporter: governor newsom will spend the weekend traveling the state for california congressional candidates and prop 1. he says looking ahead his party needs to do more with the message. >> win or lose next week, i hope we take a good, hard look at what we're up against and how we can calibrate to the world.

>> reporter: christy smith, nbc bay area news. as we draw closer to election day, former san francisco mayor willy brown is gearing up for his free lunch-in. he was there today talking about topics from the attack on paul pelosi to whether he thinks governor newsom is gearing up for a presidential run. >> i don't think it is two years but for all of us, gavin newsom is on the bench of a possible candidate for president. and california would be blessed with his coming off that bench when appropriate. i don't, frankly, think he will come off that bench with the current two incumbents, biden and harris. >> tuesday's free election day lunch at the grill intended to bring everyone together involved in politics regardless of their

views. the races that are critical to voters this midterm. that's why dozens of people were out on jfk drive for one of the last pushes in support of proposition j. it will keep part of jfk drive and the great highway car free permanently. supporters say this kind of space to bike, run and skate in the street is greatly needed. >> number one, you need a place in san francisco where you can get out and not have the cars run you over. number two, the experience that you get from being out here enhances your quality of life. this is what san francisco is all about. prop i is also on the ballot. i would re-open traffic along both streets. now, each measure needs a simple majority to pass. if both pass, the one receiving the most yes votes wins.
