majority in the house. it is projected republican kos wrepublicanedded republicans could win 220 seats. we are still waiting for georgia's senate race. neither warnock nor walker have met the 50% required >> i may be a little tired for now. but whether it's later tonight or tomorrow or four weeks from now, we will hear from the people of georgia. >> so i want to tell you all, if you can hang in, hang in there a little bit longer. just hang in there a little bit longer because something good, it takes a while for it to get better >> nbc news has projected that
4:02 am
democrat john fetterman has won in pennsylvania, defeating dr. mehmet oz in a very closely-watched race that seat is a gain for the democrats. >> this campaign has always been about fighting for everyone who's ever been got knocked down that ever got back up. [cheers and applause >> meanwhile in ohio, nbc projects that j.d. vance will win that seat. >> we're also watching arizona where the race between mark kelly and blake masters is too close to call. >> and in nevada, the race between adam laxalt and cath catherine masto is too close to call >> and nbc news projects a win
4:03 am
for monica de la cruz, the first hispanic woman to represent the 15th district of texas >> and now to a ground breaker for the democratsas becca balint is to be the first woman and lgbtq person to represent the state. and alexandria ocasio-cortez holding her seat in congress nbc news is projecting her reelection to the 14th district opposite tina forte. and also keeping her job, marjorie taylor greene is poised for re-election in georgia's 14th district over the democratic challenger, marcus flowers. >> in florida, republicans flipping an open seat in the seventh district as cory mills is expected to win over karen green. and a flip for the democrats in illinois, with nikki budsinski winning that 13th district >> joining us is jonathan allen
4:04 am
and professor of law and political science at stanford, nate prasilli. >> the big surprise is that miami dade was turned red for the first time ever. what is the significance of that to you >> a huge significance miami dade a huge population county, extremely diverse county, not just the cuban-american community but people from all over the world there. and this is a representation of republicans really making some gap gains in the state of florida. it is not really purple state anymore. huge win for desantis, he looks
4:05 am
very strong. election deniers not doing well on the ballot. >> and he's already having attacks against desantis former president trump with that date, expected to announce another run for the white house. that announcement will no doubt include his continued claims of the stolen 2020 election do you think that it will undercut those claims of a rigged system? >> i think people have fully baked in this notion of election fraud into their thinking politically. so whether it's the 30% of the population and 70%, maybe of the republican party that now believes in these claims of election fraud, i don't think there's anything that's going to change that. in some ways, the losses today by the republican party or the unfulfilled expectation may fuel some more of those conspiracy theories we'll see what happens for
4:06 am
example in arizona and elsewhere. but i think that what will be interesting is to see whether other republican leaders try to dissuade their, you know, fellow travelers from going in this direction, because so many people who had adopted the big lie didn't end up winning this time >> yeah, and seeing how far president trump or former president trump will be pushing it in the week to come >> jonathan, let's say for a moment that the republicans do take over the house again. what will their legislative agenda look like in 2023 >> that's a great question there will be a mix. they will put bills out there to implement what was not done in the past, even though they won't go anywhere. it's not so much the legislative agenda, it's going to be the investigative agenda, whether you're talking about investigations into hunter biden or impeachment investigation into joe biden we're going to have to see, with
4:07 am
biden doing better in this midterm than a lot of people expected and republicans with a very small margin in the house how far they go, but expect to at least get significant investigation. >> throw in january 6 abelong wt that thank you for your perspective >> let's turn to utah where mike lee is projected to beat independent evan mcmullin. nbc's gary grumbalk who joins us from salt lake city has been covering this. gary, good morning what is the latest on the ground in utah. >> reporter: good morning, guys. likely, it was an expected win, this is utah it wasn't as easy as the mike lee campaign thought it would be there's really two reasons for that one, evan mcmullin, his opponent
4:08 am
is ain'tn independent. he was pulling from moderate republicans. they're really upset with mike lee about his actions before, during and after january 6 as it relates to election denialism and his trying to overthrow the results of the 2020 election this has been an incredibly expensive race, actually the most expensive political race in utah history millions of dollars coming from around the country, groups throwing negative ads into the state, really making it a nasty race, and mike lee's victory speech, he talked about how he wants to have accountability on the amount of money the government spends, and he also talked about the idea that he really wants to have some serious oversight hearings when it comes to the new senate in january. >> gary, were you also recently there in oregon. in addition to you covering utah, following that race there, it's too close to call, what you have heard
4:09 am
>> this is another really interesting race that is sort of thrown into flux because of an independent. betsy johnson is an independent that has more than 9% of the vote right now and it's taking away votes from the democrat and the republican the democrat had biden support, the republican had millions and llions of support. >> thank you so much now to the other big story of the morning we're watching tropil storm nicole bearing down on florida hi michelle, good morning. >> hi, great to see you guys we're going to be tracking neck c tracking nicole. we do anticipate it to become a hurricane and make landfall. it's moving at 13 miles per hour and we have lots of tropical alerts in florida, georgia, south carolina

4:15 am
a nbc news business reporter we look into this with all the issues here. you've got crime, abortion, democracy and all. it seems that inflation was there, given where we are now with these results, where did inflation stand in the rate of importance to these voters? >> it's great to be here this morning. it ranked among the top issue. we had exit polling done by nbc news as people left the polls, and they were saying overwhelmingly that inflation was their most important issue, 32% nationwide voerters saying that was their top issue but it was divided among what cohort or party. democrats only 15% it was overwhelmingly abortion for that particular cohort but it's interesting to see that this race has been competitive more perhaps than the gop anticipated, despite the fact that they hammered so hard on the inflation bit.
4:16 am
8.2% inflation year-over-year, but the labor market looks pretty good. 3.7% unemployment, near historical lows. by and large, the labor market, the fact that people had jobs supported democrats in this election because perhaps the economic picture the house might not go as red as people had anticipated that speaks to an economy that maybe the message was not as clear for republicans as they hoped. >> since it is so mixed, it's difficult to understand why is it they voted that way i can find a job, but everything i'm paying for is -- >> more expensive. >> exactly whose fault is it? and who's going to help me out you get an understanding of how they rank that given that it is so mixed >> when it comes to the economy, it's a bit of a nebulous concept. what people feel is what they're
4:17 am
see seeing at the store, at the gas pump everyone knows that gasoline's more expensive 18% higher than a year ago food, 11% higher than a year ago. but not all this is necessarily chalked up to a political candidate. when you think about chicken prices, egg prices there was a bird flu that's not a political story a bunch of birds died. when it comes to the story of overall inflation, there are policy things that people can to, rent for example housing policies are something very much politicians can do that is a big issue in arizona particularly >> thank for the break down, especially when it dom to the dollar sns we'll be right back with much more election coverage. stay with us if you have heart failure, entrust your heart to entresto.
