steps you can take to help support them in our area. the third hour of "today in the bay" continues right now. and it's a good friday morning to you. good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. we start with breaking news we've been following. mike inouye tracking a big backup on northbound 680 and actually some problems on the southbound side, too. >> absolutely right, laura. both directions are currently stopped this is a caltrans camera. it's a still picture but backed up to bernal. we see some headlights here. on the maps what we're talking about. you are basically cut off through pleasanton and sunol. that connection is not available right now because of that bernal cutoff. a rolled over big rig. 8:30 to 9:00 before this can open. highway 94 is the alternate or folks heading over to the dublin

grade. both areas because of the light holiday traffic still showing at speed but this is a huge note for folks traveling south from concord to walnut creek and expecting to head straight down to the south bay. avoid 680 through pleasanton and sunol. the rest of the bay, kari, an easy drive. a beautiful, nice light drive. a beautiful view as well. >> it looks great and it's a holiday so it may in other spots be a lighter commute and it's cold out there. our temperatures starting out in the upper 30s and low 40s. your commute across the bay bridge will be about 44 degrees. partly cloudy. los gatos today and we'll be watching out for a chance of rain for part of our weekend. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. we do have breaking news to tell you about. an update on the south pacific

where a tsunami warning has now been called off. this is after the 7.1 earthquake that struck about four hours ago south of fiji, 120 miles east of the tongan islands. no reports of any damage. 6:03. turning to decision 2022 and the balance of power on capitol hill still in limbo three days following the election. >> the key races still undepp sided. the conversation over who controls congress dominating the talk in washington. and that's where we find "today in the bay's" brie jackson live this morning. you've been tracking the latest results for us. >> reporter: good morning, marcus, laura. days after the election and we are still keeping a close eye on some of these key senate races. control of both the house and the senate remains up for grabs as vote counting is still going on in some areas. the waiting game continues days after election day we still

don't know the results of key races. officials are counting mail-in ballots where u.s. senate candidates are neck and neck. >> we couldn't go any faster now even if we wanted to. >> reporter: arizona's senate race has yet to be called and in georgia voters will head back to the polls in december to pick a winner. >> we know how to win a run-off. now that doesn't mean it's going to be easy. >> hey, i was built for this. i was built for this. >> reporter: even with control of congress still up in the air ramping up plans to take over the house. kevin mccarthy is jockeying to become house speaker but faces challenges. >> i have stated kevin mccarthy has not done anything to earn my vote. >> reporter: democrats fought off a red wave this midterm during a democratic national committee event president biden thanked supporters calling tuesday a strong night for the party. the president also touting news

that consumer prices rose less than expected. a sign inflation may be slowing down. >> this is a positive sign of the resilience of the economic recovery. >> reporter: the administration claiming the recent down tick in costs for americans is proof that their policies are working. and president biden is spending time overseas taking part in some high-stakes meetings including the u.n. climate conference and the g20 summit. marcus, laura? >> a lot going on. brie jackson, thank you. back in the bay area oakland's mayor's race is among those still too close to call. here are the latest numbers with the registrar saying this will be the last ballot update until next monday night. loren taylor has a slim lead over sheng thao in a race decided by ranked choice results. >> also in the east bay the district attorney race still too close to call. terry wiley has an edge over pamela price by only a few

thousand votes. now whoever wins will make history as the county's first black d.a. and you can stay up to date on the election results as they come in by downloading our free nbc bay area app available on apple and android devices. many who face mental and physical struggles on a daily basis. pete suratos joins us live at a v.a. center in contra costa county looking on how we can best honor and support our veterans. which is sometimes a difficult journey for them. pete? >> reporter: good morning, laura. it can be a difficult journey for our veterans. we had a chance to speak to a local health expert who works closely with these veterans when it comes to their struggles and says at the top of the list is loneliness. she said roughly 44% of veterans report feeling lonely at some point in their life and 10% say they feel the sense of lone

lipness a majority of the time. now the dangers of this is this can lead to withdrawal from daily activity and can impact their physical health. >> loneliness leads to other problems, health problems, higher risk of heart disease compared to other americans aged 50 and older. they have poorer outcomes. >> reporter: the list of ways to support our veterans. if you are in a position to hire, hire vets because they are mission driven and will get the job done. you can hang a flag for support. there's a lot of them out there. we have wounded warriors and k9s for warriors on that list.

california has the largest population of vets but the health expert mentions that many of them are moving to texas so they can have the largest veteran population soon enough. that could happen by 2027. reporting live from martinez, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> maybe looking for a little affordability out there. thanks so much. some great tips there. go hang your flag, pete. many veterans day events planned for later today that includes the antioch veterans day parade that kicks off at 11:00 a.m. followed by a pancake breakfast at one marina plaza. gold star families will be hohn orpd at cupertino memorial park. san jose holds its veterans day parade near s.a.p. center. at 1:00, petaluma veterans day parade starts. >> thank you for your service to them all. 6:08 right now. this developing story on the east coast. nicole now a tropical depression.

the impact along florida's southeastern coast this is deerfield beach just outside of boca raton, and you can see right there the giant waves hitting and damaging this fishing pier. now at least two hurricane-related deaths are now confirmed near orlando. the victims touched a live power line. "today's" kerry sanders has more near daytona beach. >> reporter: later today it's expected state officials will make a visit here to what is really a devastated area by this hurricane, a category 1. nobody expected to see this sort of damage and the beach erosion is extensive not only taking out as many as 40 homes but at least seven condos and hotels that may have had their foundations undermined by the beach erosion. in fact, indications are those seven buildings will have to come down. i'll have those details coming up on "today." now back to you. >> thank you, kerry. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking this storm all week to see where it's been

having an impact. yeah, and it's still having an impact actually spreading out and proep producing rain and tos today. look at how widespread the rain is from pennsylvania all the way down to alabama and off the atlantic coast so we can see how much rain is being dumped by this system as it continues to slowly move through. we'll be watching that. now here is our next rainmaker, a very weak one and it will move through fairly quickly as we go into tomorrow. timing it out hour by hour here we are at 3:00 tomorrow morning, more clouds move in and that's going to keep those temperatures from dropping so quickly so it won't be as cold. then as we go throughout the day there will be a wave of rain that could possibly hit the north "today in the bay" about 3:00 to 6:00 and then as it moves into the rest of the bay area, falls apart so not all of us will see rain tomorrow. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, where can we find lower gas prices? we'll talk gas prices.

happy veterans day to you. right now at 6:15 as you are starting out in antioch your commute is cold. it's in the upper 30s but at least no issues with fog. we'll see partly cloudy skies throughout the day as temperatures make it up to about 60 degrees. a little bit on the cool side. we'll talk about a chance of weekend rain in the forecast coming up. and as you travel to pleasanton, your commute is stopped on the northbound side. southbound, though, i do see sensors lining up right now and scanning for updates. talking to chp to see if we can get the latest. working hard along with caltrans. some cleanup and a crash that's still going on. it will be hours in some cases. well, good morning. a salute to our veterans on this veterans day including my father, gene, u.s. navy on the

"uss shangri la" and my nephew ian. technically he's not a veteran, he's still on active duty. look at these numbers. these are great. this is the news that inflation seemed to be cooling yesterday. the stock market took off. we got a comma here on hopes that the fed might ease its interest rate hikes. the only red you are going to see on this board is the yield on the ten year. that, too, is good news. a number of very important executives at twitter have resigned including, according to bloomberg. the head of safety in charge of keeping all the bad stuff off the social network. that same person was the primary person reassuring advertisers they could safely stay on twitter. the executive who moderated that talk on wednesday with advertisers also resigned. so just to put a bow on it, the two people in charge of telling advertisers twitter was a great place on wednesday quit twitter

thursday. musk told all remaining employees they have to come to work in person today on market street and if they don't he will consider that their resignation. twitter yesterday gave a blue check, what used to be a mark of verification, to an account claiming to be and appearing to be drug maker eli lilly, which declared insulin is now free. insulin is not free and that was not eli lilly. united airlines with a blue check actually is controlled by united airlines. you can trust that your flight had been delayed but no longer. anyone can get a blue check for anything like the eli lilly faker who did not represent eli lilly. someone got a check for what appears to be apple plus. it uses a capital i as the l in

plus so it's apple tv pius. a blue check to jesus. that has been around for a long time and you shall know him by this sign. also authenticated satan, now the mark of the beast. those blue checks were eventually taken away. the point is if it's eli lilly, if it's apple and has a blue check, don't trust that's actually what it is. the government would announce, hey, this baby food has glass in it, important information we knew came from the fda. now we do not know where any information on twitter comes from necessarily. don't literally -- don't trust what you read on twitter. >> no longer a reliable source. >> absolutely, categorically not. >> that's huge. thank you, scott. 6:18 for you right now. trending for you this morning, okay, what's the deal in this candle these days?

the door. grab a heavier jacket with temperatures in the north bay at about 34 degrees in sonoma and santa rosa and it's 34 in scotts valley, too. as you are making plans today, check out the veterans day parade in san jose, starts at noon. it will be 57 degrees at the time that it begins and going into the afternoon at about 60 degrees and partly cloudy skies. 60 is our high today. 63 in gilroy. and for the east bay reaching 62 in livermore and oakland, 58 degrees. also upper 50s for san mateo and san francisco upper 50s. partly cloudy skies. a big spread in temperatures across the bay area. it's around 60 degrees for all of us. as we go into the weekend, not all of us will get some rain. clouds in the morning and the afternoon a chance of hit-or-miss showers. look at the time line. as we go into the late night

hours it moves into the east bay. it breaks up some and we're not all going to see that chance of showers. as we look at the sierra, 1 to 3 inches of snow this week. san francisco will make it into the upper 50s for the week. mike, 680 still the issue? >> still the issue. lighter holiday traffic. all stops on this camera. the maps show you the same thing on the speed sensors. no speeds north southbound block for cleanup. i've seen these sensors light up a bit. one of your alternates. lighter traffic and a number of
