the remnants of nicole heading north, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and the threat of tornados up and down the east coast. in a moment kerry sanders has a look at the devastation already caused in florida. let's start with dylan she is tracking what we can expect today and into the weekend. good morning. >> good morning. and it is going to get messy for the east coast it's doing that right now. up through the appalachians heavier rain look how expansive this storm is the storm itself is now a tropical depression but we have got the outer bands producing torrential downpours up into the northeast through pennsylvania and west virginia right now. winds are still at 35 miles per hour you still have those gusty winds along with the heavier downpours, too the bulk of the rain moving north of atlanta but i want to point out that there is the chance we could see some severe weather today including tornados through virginia, north and south carolina where we have tornado watches in effect unti 3:00 this afternoon and even if we don't get tornados we could get some gusty winds up to 60 miles per hour also the threat of hail, severe type storms with the nature of this whole system. again, it's tropical in nature,
7:04 am
so we do have the potential of seeing about 3, 4, 5, up to 8 inches of rain but the good thing is we have this cold front. now, yes, this will enhance some of the storm, the rainfall back through the interior northeast, western new york, western pennsylvania into virginia and west virginia, down into m.d. maryland, too. but as this moves eastward it's going to help clear out quickly. the weekend is not a washout we are going to start off with rain early saturday morning but then that will exit and then the cold air surges in, cold enough to produce lake-effect snow this weekend through the great lakes. hoda >> dylan, thank you. now, let's take a look at where nicole has been. the storm pummeled parts of florida's east coast making landfall as a rare november hurricane. nbc's kerry sanders was right there in the thick of it yesterday. he joins us now. good morning, kerry. >> reporter: hoda, this morning structural engineers and building inspectors will examine the damage and red flag what is beyond repair.
7:05 am
more than 40 homes like the ones you see over my shoulder here likely cannot be saved because the foundations they were built on, the sand, was washed away by the storm. and then there are the condos and the hotels which you can see right here in this live drone picture more than 22 that are deemed unsafe right now and state officials say as many as seven may have to be brought down because the storm so compromised those buildings' foundations. this morning after another deadly storm washed away miles of florida coastline and lef crumbling foundations of homes and businesses in its wake, residents and visitors are still feeling the impact. >> better watch out. we are going to blow away here. >> reporter: nicole crashing ashore early wednesday as a category 1 hurricane just south of vero beach. lashing the state with pounding rain, heavy winds and dangerous storm surge.
7:06 am
>> the wind is wild. >> reporter: in the aftermath heavy flooding in st. augustine, inundating streets in st. petersburg 50-mile-per-hour winds shutting down the sunshine skyway bridge. severe erosion along daytona beach as well as significant flooding downtown. first responders throughout the area helping in any way they can while hundreds of condo residents were forced to evacuate their building after the structure was deemed unsafe. the foundation of as many as 19 condo and hotel buildings here in volusia county now showing signs of being compromised >> as you can see behind us here and other structures, we are going in, eroding underneath the foundations to the point where there is nothing left to hold it up. >> reporter: just south of day daytona, resident krista says homes and businesses once separated from the ocean by backwards, sea walls, sand dunes, and over 100 feet of

beach are now vulnerable >> it was that same trifecta of ian, king tide, and nicole it made us so unstable, things started collapsing. >> reporter: the far-reaching storm taking aim at beloved landmarks. in lauderdale-by-the-sea this popular fishing pier is in pieces. >> the storm was 90 miles from here and it still destroyed the pier >> reporter: after the first november hurricane to strike the u.s. mainland in 37 years communities in the sunshine state forced again to assess and rebuild. it's expected florida governor ron desantis will visit the area today to take in some assessments himself. meantime, those residents who evacuated will find it is still difficult to get here because the barrier islands bridges are closed even for those who have homes here that's to give the emergency crews, specifically the utility crews, the space they need to get power back it's estimated more than 45,000 homes still have no power. hoda. >> all right, kerry sanders for us there in florida.
7:08 am
thank you. well, now we move to the battle for control of congress so much still up in the air after tuesday's midterms votes are still being counted. election officials in several of those states are urging patience, and former president trump is weighing in, unloading on his rising republican rival nbc senior capitol hill correspondent garrett haake with the latest good morning >> reporter: good morning. the voting may be done, but the fight for control of congress very much continues. there are nearly 30 house races that haven't yet been called republicans are still favored to flip that chamber. democrats would have to win almost all of those races to keep control in the senate we're staring down yet another runoff in georgia. all of this as former president trump takes aim at a potential rival in the next election this morning the ripple effects from the midterm elections already affecting the next big race as control of congress remains up in the air. races in arizona and nevada still too early to call as vote
7:09 am
counting continues on social media former president trump attacking the process in those states without evidence as corrupt and allowing more time to cheat but mostly mr. trump focused on attacking a potential 2024 rival, florida republican governor ron desantis. calling him a, quote, average republican governor with great public relations mr. trump posting that, quote, ron came to me in desperate shape before his 2018 florida election, and he saved desantis from being, quote, politically dead mr. trump also defending himself over the midterm results but some republicans are trying to turn away from the party's former leader, placing blame for a worse than expected election at mr. trump's feet for backing unelectable candidates and focusing on conspiracy theories. >> if fealty to donald trump is the primary criteria for selecting candidates, we're probably not going to do really well. >> reporter: republican mike lawler defeated democratic campaign chair sean patrick
7:10 am
maloney in new york. >> you want to see the party move forward from trump? >> yeah, i think moving in a different direction as we move forward is a good thing. >> reporter: but even some trump allies see desantis as the new republican leader. >> i think governor desantis is the biggest single winner of the night and he will almost certainly become the rallying point for everybody in the republican party who wants to move beyond president trump. >> reporter: after defying expectations of a red wave on election night democrats still have a chance to keep the house, but they need to run the table to preserve their majority while gop leader kevin mccarthy has projected confidence he will have the votes to be the next speaker, some far right republicans appear ready to oppose him >> i have not seen the demonstrated fight that we're looking for. >> garrett, let's talk about georgia. we know there's going to be a runoff early next month. maybe, maybe not it controls the -- determines control of the senate
7:11 am
what's the strategy on both sides? determative or not, both >> reporter: whether it's determinative or not, both parties are pouring everything they have got into this race ted cruz campaigned for herschel walker yesterday and john fetterman is raising money for his would-be colleague raphael warnock. one open question we're watching in georgia on the gop side, will mr. trump or ron desantis or perhaps both campaign there next month for walker whom both of them have endorsed. savannah >> all right thank you. the economy was of course a major issue for voters after months of rising prices there are some encouraging signs on that front. >> the latest numbers showed that inflation slowed more than expected last month. that news sent the stock markets soaring to the best day in two years. the dow up 1,200 points. the nasdaq up more 7%. what does it mean for your bottom line? nbc business and data reporter brian cheung is here to fill us in all -- in on all of this. welcome.
7:12 am
good to see you. >> thank you >> let's talk about it the numbers looked good for inflation. things are looking good. have we seen the worst of it >> it seems like for now we may have seen the peak so again the inflation numbers yesterday showing prices in america grew by 7.7% inning october this year compared so last year. that's a slower pace 8.2% that we saw in september. look, economists say where we want to be is closer to 2% so we're still very far away from there mission not accomplished at least we are encouraged to see that number going down. as opposed to the opposite >> we have seen the federal reserve hike rates over and over and over again by a rather high number trying to get this inflation down, do you think that having seen at least some tapering off of the inflation growth, the fed may pull back on the interest rate hikes >> yeah, that is the market expectations so the pricing suggests that the federal reserve could hike interest rate, they will continue to do so, but maybe at a smaller pace than they have been doing they have been doing this more aggressive pace, going by .75 percentage points.
7:13 am
the fed is the economic steward, right. as they raise interest rates, the idea is to make costs more expensive and you try to get the economy to slow down a little bit which, hopefully, takes inflation down if this continues that will be a sign that the federal reserve can continue to take their foot off the brake pedal. >> let's talk about prices for food and things people are shopping for, like christmas presents do you see any light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to those things >> yeah, the key holiday spending season coming up. but this report does show you that the main things that people are spending on when it comes to rent, gasoline, other types of prices that you -- food, for example, still remaining very high however, we did get some silver linings in terms of the things people may be spending on for the holiday seasons, toys, clothing and shoes cheaper in the month of october, furniture, as well. jewelry and washer/dryers. not that you get that as a gift for the holiday season but still nonetheless, encouraging to see there are some price categories that are seeing declines >> thank you very much. got a lot more to get to we talked about the
