7:00 am
good morning. it is sunday, november 13th, 7:00 on the dot as we take this gorgeous look outside. wow, it is clear and the sun is shining down on the golden gate bridge on this sunday morning. thank you for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper. meteorologist vianey arana joins with us a quick look at our microclimate forecast. i have no words, it's so beautifulnippy and the conditios as far as the temperatures go are going to be similar. today we're not worried about
7:01 am
any rain chances at all. that system has moved out. a live look in downtown san jose. i want to showcase that cloud cover we're seeing this morning because we're going to get some beautiful clearing into the afternoon, but, because we're not seeing as cloudy conditions, we're still seeing the 30s once again up through parts of the north bay. we have some low 40s in through scotts valley and those chilly mornings are expected to get even colder into the couple days ahead. rain five degrees cooler in hayward. a look at your headlines. your 49ers forecast and the workweek is ahead. kira? a live look at the capitol this morning where we now know who will control the senate. nbc news projects democrat mast democrats once again have 50 seats. the only outstanding seat is in
7:02 am
georgia which is headed to a run-off next month. even if that seat goes to republican herschel walker, democrats would have control because vice president harris would, again, act as the tiebreaker in the event of a 50/50 vote. meanwhile, many house races are still outstanding though it's looking like republicans will have flipped the house. president biden reacted to the projection that democrats will keep control of the senate by saying he's not surprised but is incredibly pleased. he made the comments from his hotel in cambodia yesterday before his final day at the asean summit. >> i think it's a reflection of the quality of our candidates and they're all running on the same program. they are all sticking with it. i feel good and am looking forward to the next couple of
7:03 am
years. >> we continue to track several tight races as election workers are still busy counting ballots. the race for mayor thin, incumbent lisa gillmor is leading anthony becker by 451 votes. becker is heavily financed by the 49ers. the team wants to unseat mayor gillmor. for san jose mayor matt mahan continues to edge out cindy chavez. only 67% of ballots have been counted. and in san francisco brooke jenkins still leads over john hamasaki for city district attorney. jenkins did declare herself the winner earlier this week, but workers still need to count more than 80,000 ballots. you can continue to stay up to the minute on election results by downloading our nbc bay area app. it is free and available for a both apple and android devices. a brazen jewelry heist in
7:04 am
the east bay. we first brought you that as breaking news at 6:00 last night. witnesses tell us two carloads of thieves took over a store and made off with an undisclosed amount of jewelry. "today in the bay's" thom jensen has the latest on the investigation from san pablo. >> reporter: this is nothing new at this store. it's been robbed before and other businesses have been robbed before in this shopping center store owners tell us they're concerned and would like to see a greater police presence. we tried to talk to the owner, one of his friends who declined to speak to us on camera said the owner told him the thieves broke in through a back door avoiding security cameras and they were in and out within two minutes. a neighboring business owner said the shopping center has been plagued with crime the past few years. >> i am very concerned because we've been hit twice. >> reporter: that business owner would only talk if we didn't show his face or use his real name.
7:05 am
he says he's afraid of being targeted by thieves. police say multiple masked suspect armed with guns forced their way in and got away with a large amount of jewelry. it's not a surprise to the business owner that the alleged thieves got in and out so fast. the neighboring business owner says security is light. there's just one guard. >> he's on a golf cart and he doesn't make a full circle fast enough to see what's going on. >> reporter: a richmond man who shops here frequently noticed shop owners were on the edge with the increase in crime watching everyone closely and putting anything of value behind glass. >> it's way up. every store you go into everything is locked up. it's not fair to the rest of us. >> reporter: they would like to see police patrol more often. thom jensen, "today in the bay." new this morning police in the south bay were busy catching drivers and spectators involved in two massive sideshows.
7:06 am
the first happened just before 11:30 at the intersection of 7th street and virginia street in san jose. then it moved. it looks like traffic but officers were able to box in drivers on several streets. you can see the copious amount of drivers boxed in. sjpd did give citations out to dozens of drivers. tens of thousands of university of california workers across the state plan to strike tomorrow. the walkout of nearly 48,000 includes researchers and teaching assistants at all ten uc campuses including uc berkeley and ucsf. "today in the bay's" marianne favro has more on the walkout and how it could impact students. >> reporter: union leaders describe the planned walkout as the largest academic worker strike ever in the u.s. researchers, post doctoral scholars, teaching assistants
7:07 am
and graders plan to walk off the job at 8:00 monday morning including 3,000 workers at ucsf. a grad students researcher at ucsf says the main sticking point is compensation. >> for me personally that means that i make roughly 40k a year pretax and that leaves me pretty rent burdened. >> reporter: help with transportation and child care costs. more than 9,000 uaw workers at uc berkeley and more than 2,700 at uc santa cruz may also walk off the job monday possibly impacting students gearing up for finals. >> that does mean papers aren't going to get graded or the professors teaching course also have to do that. >> reporter: a statement said uc believes its proposals have been fair, reasonable, and responsive to the union's priorities and looks forward to continuing negotiations with the uaw and
7:08 am
settling these contracts as quickly as possible. the uc says all campuses will be prepared to make sure that instruction and research is not interrupted during the strike. marianne favro, "today in the bay." inflation is taking its toll on nonprofit organizations that serve people in need for the holiday season. here in the bay area the food bank is seeing a rise in need simultaneously as donations are dropping. the food bank fed 178,000 a month, that is now up to 278,000 a month. >> it is cash, those monetary donations. what people don't know is the individual donations take up around 70% of the donation that is come into the food banks. >> the food bank is asking anyone who can to help out. volunteers are always welcome, so, too, donations of canned and
7:09 am
dried goods. mark your calendar. we are teaming up with safeway to make sure no one goes hungry this holiday season. you can make a $10 donation at any safeway store when you're at the check-out and it will go to local food banks. our nourishing neighbors food drive kicks off next saturday, november 19 and runs through christmas day. and tonight the 49ers host the l.a. chargers at levi's stadium. you can watch "sunday night football" right here on nbc bay area. our coverage begins at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. raj mathai and janelle wang will join us live from levi's for a special pregame newscast. kickoff is at 5:20. at 7:09, much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, live to washington, d.c., for our weekly interview with chuck todd who has a preview of this week's "meet the ess."pr

7:11 am
7:12 am
welcome back. it is time now for our weekly discussion with chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press." hi, chuck. thank you for joining us this morning as always. >> how are you doing? >> good, thanks. we are still wait to go see who controls the house, although it seems to be leaning towards republicans. but we found out late last night the democrats will keep their majority in the senate. this might be a stretch of a question but how does this big win for democrats impact president biden's decision whether to seek re-election, or does it? >> i think it reinforces his belief that, a, he can seek a second term and that he has the political capital to do it. i think what these midterms do and the surprising strength of democrats, anybody that was thinking about primarying biden or trying to push him out because of age, it gets a little
7:13 am
harder today. the fact of the matter is, you know, whether you want to look at him and say, well, he has a 44% approval rating, that's not good. okay. but his messaging on maga republicans and on democracy may have worked. and, you know, who else are you going to -- if not him, who? i do think that whatever the little whispers that were taking place before the midterms -- they were there, i'd hear them. you would talk to a couple of governors in the midwest seeing if there was room, a certain governor looking and flirting at the same thing, i don't think any of it looks viable today. this is joe biden's nomination unless he decides not to seek it. >> very interesting and i caught what you were throwing out there. sticking with the presidency, another question about the presidency, what about this anticipated announcement from former president trump that he'll run again in 2024?
7:14 am
and, if so, will the gop be behind him because so many of his endorsed candidates did not win in the midterm. >> i wonder if this is an open question. i'm not ready to say it's an open question because we went through this before after "access hollywood" and january 6, the grassroots abandoned him. that's what i'm watching him. it's not whether the electeds will get behind him but this puts a lot of -- creates an extra problem for kevin mccarthy in trying to get the votes he needs. i just think it complicates all of these leadership fights here in washington. trump's presence out there. there will be a litmus test. are you with him or against him? some people only want to vote for leaders with him, some only want to vote for ones who move on. it will divide the party and create more problems than not, but i think what i'm watching
7:15 am
for is, is he going to be able to sell out his arenas, get 5,000 and 10,000 people to show up or is he the aging rock star who has to go to smaller venues to make it look like he has a crowd? that's something i'm going to be watching for over the next six to eight weeks. >> all right. i'm sure we'll be talking about this again. chuck, as always, thanks for your insight this morning. chuck will have interviews with senator elizabeth warren and senator bill cassidy and will also have an interview with senior adviser to the president anita dunn. be sure to stick right here and then tune in to "meet the press" at 8:00 a.m. right after this newscast. if you watch every sunday you know coming up in about 30 minutes we'll talk to political analyst larry gerston. we'll take a look at some of the big surprises as votes are still being counted in some crucial races. we're going to turn now to new

7:21 am
out the door we have some 30s on the map. 39 in concord. dublin, 37. in through sonoma, 42. now there are no frost advisories in place right now but it wouldn't surprise me if we saw some issued early tomorrow morning into tuesday. here is the reason why. satellite radar, i talked about that chance of rain would be nonexistent. the system has made its way out east and pushing the cloud cover further south. if i zoom this in closer we will inch into a much calmer weather pattern. behind that system we see the beauty of what it did. a couple hundredths of an inch to the bay area and the sierra. this is a live look right now, 16 degrees. it is cold. if you had plans to drive up to the sierra you should be okay as far as any snow chance falling not today or tomorrow but still check the roads out there. a beach hazard statement in place tonight through tomorrow. because of that front we could see some dangerous sneaker waves
7:22 am
and strong rip currents. hourly forecast by 12:00 upper 50s and then we're only going to max out in the 60s today. so a little nippy. overnight lows in the 50s and 40s but it's also going to get windy. we'll see an increase in the offshore winds. napa, 20 plus. san jose, 15 plus. and then it starts to diminish as the system makes its exit. we get rdy for "sunday night football" here on nbc. it is an evening game. i'm going to the game and you will see me bundled up. by the end of the game, there it is, it's going to be in the 40s by the time we get out of the game. if you're like me and you get a little cold, prepare because if you have to get to work in the morning on monday morning, another round of 30s again early morning. concord, 39. up through the north bay, also in the 30s, kira. i even said to pierre i'm going to have to get some gloves. i don't care if people look at me crazy. once my hands get cold, it is game over for me. that will be something i definitely keep in mind.
7:23 am
