with his own family's lives at stake, he decided to take action. >> i just know i got into mode and i needed to save my family, and that family was at that time everybody in that room. >> reporter: it was a battlefield richard fierro couldn't have imagine. a beloved club where he came with his wife, daughter, her boyfriend and friends for a drag show. when the bullets started flying the 15-year army vet who served four combat tours in iraq and afghanistan felt instincts kick in. >> it's a reflex. go. go to the fire. stop the action. stop the activity. don't let no one get hurt. >> reporter: charging through the chaos, fierro said he tackled the gunman who was wearing full body armor, knocking a rifle out of his hands, then wrestling away a handgun, using it to beat the shooter. he says he even enlisted the help of a drag performer at the club. >> i told her, kick this guy. kick this guy. she took her high heel and stuffed it in his face. >> reporter: but fierro wasn't able to save his daughter's

22-year-old boyfriend, raymond green vance, who died in the attack. >> he is a good kid, and i loved him. >> i have never encountered a person who had engaged in such heroic actions that was so humble about it. >> reporter: the accused 22-year-old gunman arrested on five counts of first-degree murder, as well as several hate-related charges. we're learning more about the other lives cut short in saturday night's senseless shooting. five in all. kelly loving, a 40-year-old trans woman is described by a friend as compassionate, generous and trusting. derrick rump and daniel aston beloved bartenders at club q. >> it's a nightmare that you can't wake up from. >> reporter: ashley paugh leaves behind a husband and 11-year-old daughter. her sister stephanie clark telling nbc news their family is devastated. ed sanders, one of 17 wounded in the attack, grateful to be alive.

orlando to moreauville, louisiana, non-stop but lauren, her husband, two kids and the family dog most certainly will be stopping along the 750-mile road trip as they head to spend thanksgiving with her husband's family with gas averaging right about $3.65 a gallon if they averaged 26 miles to the gallon, they will spend about $210 on gas round trip. >> cost is a factor. flights for the four of us would probably be around $1,000. >> reporter: meanwhile, the nation's airlines and airports are running at full capacity and full stress. >> we literally made it all the way through security and realized we still had the rental car keys so my husband just had to run all the way back. >> i will get there probably two, three hours early to make sure i am getting through security and i am at my gate. >> reporter: the tsa reports heavy passenger volume since sunday, november 13th, approaching or above 2 million

screenings each day. some days exceeding 2019 numbers. with the snow moving out of the great lake cities, it should be blue sky flying this week. the airlines say they have staffed up and trimmed schedules to avoid a repeat of the summer travel fiasco. transportation secretary buttigieg at chicago o'hare. >> i would not say we are out of the woods yet but i am cautiously optimistic about this week off to a good start and we will be watching this closely into the other peak holiday travel times coming in the next few weeks. >> and, tom, the busiest time we are talking about a possible rail strike? what's going on with that? >> reporter: yeah, so watch this closely. these are freight line operators and there are two main unions involved here, conductors and engineers. one union agreed to a new contract the other hasn't the sticking point is no paid time off for sick time they may, if they can't come to an agreement, they could go on

strike on december 9th if congress doesn't get involved and this could have a major impact on the supply chain, on last-minute christmas gifts and also on commuter rail lines in d.c., in chicago, in san francisco, even some amtrak lines. so the eyes of the nation are very much on the rail lines, on the freight lines to see if they can come up with an agreement before december 9th. >> a lot is riding on that tom, you thank you very much. >> it is 7:10. dylan is in for al a lot of people hitting the road wondering what is the weather going to be like. >> i see sunshine. that's the story across the ye country. a lot of sun and just fine conditions for travel today. from coast to coast, down south a little bit, a few spotty showers near houston, the gulf coast. nothing if you are traveling today. as we look at temperatures it's also starting to warm up back into the 50s in chicago, in cleveland, minneapolis still a little chilly. spotty snow showers out towards the northern rockies but we are going to see those

sort of fizzle out as they move east ward here is your thanksgiving day forecast heavy rain possible down through mississippi and alabama, down through east central parts of texas. but elsewhere across the country it looks fine up and down the east coast on thanksgiving day friday i'd say try to get back home, could be the trouble spot. mostly just showers in the northeast. i don't expect any major airport delays but down in the southeast, maybe atlanta we could see pockets of heavier rain, that could cause minor issues for the most part, travel for this holiday does look pretty nice savannah. >> thank you. and as many of us get ready to attend holiday gatherings, health experts are sounding a new alarm over a surge in respiratory viruses. nbc's stephanie gosk joins us with the details good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the country is on the move for the holiday and so are a host of viruses. the flu, rsv and covid thanksgiving plans hang in the balance as people grapple with getting sick and are being given

advice no one wants to hear. may be better to stay home hospitals across the country are being pushed to the limit. emergency rooms are filling up with cases of covid-19, the flu and rsv. the respiratory virus that can make children under a year old extremely sick >> there have been days we have had 30 to 40 children waiting in our emergency departments waiting for an in-patient bed. and that's unprecedented. >> reporter: in new england cases of rsv are down, but flu is up. some hospitals in boston say their pediatric icus are maxed out. the backup begins in the emergency room. >> we have large numbers of patients in the emergency department awaiting a bed, many for 12, even sometimes more than 24 plus hours. >> reporter: in ohio they waited 11 hours while suffering from a severe case of rsv his parents noticed he was struggling to breathe. >> he was coughing

he wasn't eating and he had a silent cry. >> you could see him physically crying but he wasn't making a sound. >> reporter: he was admitted to the cleveland clinic and intubated. he went into respiratory arrest but was stabilized and is now recovering at home. >> you saw a hospital system stressed really thin does that make you concerned >> it worries me for people that don't have a couple of minutes away from a low class hospital that we had to wait so long for an ambulance and bed. >> reporter: another complication, a national shortage of drugs like amoxicillin. an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections which could be triggered by respiratory viruses. >> some of our providers are prescribing alternatives parents are frustrated because they have to go to a number of pharmacies before they can find the medication >> reporter: take a rapid test before getting together with family consider wearing a mask if you are vulnerable increase ventilation stay at home if you are feeling sick

undetected. this morning a new search area is the focus of the investigation nine days after the bodies of four university of idaho students were found brutally murdered in their shared off-campus home. police temporarily expanding the crime scene, blocking off this wooded area and parking lot behind the house. >> every investigator involved will continue to put all of their resources and all of our partner agencies' resources into continuing this investigation. >> reporter: meanwhile, as fear in the community grows -- >> i don't feel safe in my own home and i don't live close by. >> reporter: the university of idaho acknowledging some students may want to finish the semester online after the thanksgiving break. >> we are making security a top priority and planning for the very real possibility that some students aren't comfortable returning to campus. >> reporter: fear in the community rampant with some speculating about a recent dog mutilation in the area. jim and pam called authorities to report their mini shepherd buddy was killed and skinned last month.

bigger inflation picture but gas prices are at about $3.64 nationally a lot of people hitting the blue sky roads today and across this week expected to have a pretty good travel experience. aaa saying that so far, so good. i wanted to mention, by the way, as it relates to air travel, the faa opening up military airspace from the planes and from the roads now to the trains. we are watching freight trains why? because there is a potential strike looming as it relates to freight trains two big unions are still in contract negotiations and that's kind of gone nowhere fast. one union has agreed to take the settlement the other hasn't this is a settlement negotiated by the biden administration. and so now there is a potential for a big freight strike coming up on december 9 that could impact those last-minute gifts coming to your local store for christmas. in addition, it could impact metro ridership. in other words, regional rail lines in d.c., new york, chicago, san francisco, if they don't come up with an agreement by december 9 and congress
