>> yeah, it does, gets you moving. >> even on the desk. right now at 6:00, the rain is arriving in the bay area and the downpour already heavy in some places. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking when exactly it will arrive in your neighborhood. that wet weather making a messy morning commute for some folks. mike is monitoring one of the biggest traffic problems. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. thank you for starting your day with "today in the bay." i am marcus washington. >> i am ginger conejero saab. laura has the morning off. december is off to a wet start here in the bay area. it may not be raining near you but you will definitely want to brace for it. mike will look at the roads in a moment, but first, kari, you have the forecast. >> yes, it's nice to see rain moving in and i know you have to get to work and drive through it

and get out there in it, but we are welcoming in the wet weather as we see it covering the north bay, moving through san francisco and into the peninsula and in the east bay as we get a closer look. pockets of heavy rain through northern napa county, and it's picking up for novato right now. we can see it over the hills in parts of the north bay. light rain in san francisco moving down the peninsula. lighter showers over toward arenda and walnut creek, and starting to get going in concord. and then the los altos hills and palo alto, the lighter rain moving in and closing in on sunnyvale in the next few minutes. the rain will continue to pick up for the east bay. by 9:00, it's approaching san josé. 10:00, it's also getting a lot heavier in san josé while the north bay will start to see that rain letting up late morning. for the afternoon, it's still raining from areas in search to the east bay on southward.

i will have more on that coming up, but mike has an alert in san josé. it's not weather related but near downtown san josé, north 87 on the transition to 280, the skyline is rendered by the 3-d, and the traffic flow is rendered by our sensors. no real slowing but the transition to 280 north is blocked because of a minor injury crash. i have an update there are minor injuries, but they have the car across that transition. and 101 cleared now and getting ready for the second burst, and ready for the rain that kari shows is coming from from north to south and west to east. it will hit now, and it has the city and the north bay and contra costa county affected. back to you. with freezing temperatures around the bay area, santa clara county is opening up warming centers. the county will be opening 12

warming centers in all mostly at county libraries, and also at a couple senior centers. the county is handing out blankets, tarps, tents and hand warmers. the vta is offering free rides to warming centers through sunday. don't forget, you can follow mike and kari on twitter as they track the storm and road conditions all morning long. the great thing is, they are constantly updating in real time so you have to give them a follow. you can get a look at the interactive radar on our website, nbcbayarea.com. the oakland zoo will be closed during the day today due to the storm, but glofari will still be up and running tonight. this is after the whole park experienced a power outage that left dozens of people experiencing the glofari stuck on the gondola in darkness. zoogoers said there was only one shuttle van that could only

carry 15 people at a time so some people started to walk down instead of waiting. >> it was chaotic. they had no plan as far as i could see to rescue people. >> folks working for pg&e said they are trying to determine what caused the outage, and it could be linked to damage a power line in that area. and then a man was charged with carjacking and grand theft auto and battery. prosecutors say the driver took the bus on a wild ride and that he sped through the mission district with the display on the bus saying, quote, call police. investigators say the driver hit about ten cars before it finally stopped. the arraignment will be at 9:00 this morning. from buses to trains, a viral video is causing transit

authorities to investigate an act that is extremely dangerous. this is video taken yesterday morning in san josé. jessica gomez recorded the video and tells us she was on her way to a shopping trip when she noticed that person on the back of the train. hours after sharing that video on social media, it generated thousands of views. that train was traveling on the blue line towards santa teresa near the light-rail stations. >> he was just holding on loosely, and the train was going 60 to 70. >> vta saying safety is their highest priority and urge anybody that sees things like this to call 911. today is world aids day. activists will be raising awareness about how the disease disproportionately affects communities of color. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us from san josé city hall

with more on how the aids blanket will be on display today throughout the day. kris. >> reporter: i had the opportunity to see the aids quilt when it made its first round across the country. 34 years ago was the first world aids day, and a lot of things have changed since then. aids is no longer a death sentence like it was back then, but it's not the same for all communities. we talked with the san francisco aids foundation and they tell us it's especially evident in southern states which have not expanded medicaid coverage to help poor people with hiv, and prevent people from getting hiv in the first place. the number of hiv diagnosis went up last year for the first time since 2012 mainly because of the lack of care during the covid-19 pandemic. >> what is most important is the disproportionate impacts that we are seeing within communities,

so as increases were happening in communities of color and women of color, in particular. it is an important moment for us to double down on our efforts to ensure all of our strategies are based in an equity framework, and we are meeting the community where they are at and partnering with organizations that have long reputations of respect with black and brown communities in the bay area. >> reporter: there are a number of world aids day commemorations around the bay area. here in san josé at city hall, the aids quilt bill be on display this morning and they will raise the pride flag this afternoon. there's a march and vigil planned, and there's an observance at the grove and a number of dignitaries will be there, including former house speaker, nancy pelosi. i am putting these up on my

social media pages in case you want to take part. we will hear from one bay area expert about the medical advances being made. let's take a live look out at san rafael, and people are out on the road there, but where is the rain? let's go to meteorologist, kari hall, because she is monitoring and tracking the path of the storm. how is it looking? >> it's covering all of the bay area except for the tri-valley as well as the south bay. we are seeing rain pouring over the north bay and heavy pockets have lasted for the last couple of hours, and some areas like mill valley seeing the rain picking up right now as well as novato. it's raining in san francisco. across the bay over towards oakland and hayward it's raining. and then moving down to palo alto, and will be raining in sunnyvale in the next few minutes. as the rain moves from north to south, we could see half an inch

look at this. stocks made a huge jump on wednesday. the dow roared ahead after the head of the fed, jerome powell, hinted the fed may ease off interest hikes a bit with a half point instead of the four we have seen four separate times. usually we get our santa claus rally closer to christmas, but this was a gift for investors. elon musk appears to have cancelled his war on apple. he met with tim cook at tim cook's office at apple, and musk says it was all a big misunderstanding. and elon musk said apple threatened to pull it from the app. apple never considered blocking the app. sam bankman-fried, the young man

should be opened on christmas. >> with kids, you have to give santa a chance to deliver them. >> absolutely. >> but we are doing christmas eve this year because we are leaving and going to tahoe christmas day. it may depend on what you got going on in life. >> that snow is a present for you. >> yeah, and i am excited. seeing the snow coming down now, i am really getting excited. we have rain for the bay area, so hopefully our grass and all our vegetation will turn green after this. we are seeing a lot of green on the radar, and the pockets of the heaviest rain still in parts of the north bay. we are seeing this system threading in, already snowing in the sierra and this will continue for the next few hours. let's take it hour-by-hour so you can plan out your day. at 7:30, the rain is letting up in santa rosa and really getting going in san francisco and moving towards concord. at 9:30 we are still seeing that heavy rain in san francisco and the peninsula, and notice the

oranges in parts of the east bay in alameda and contra costa counties, we are seeing the rain continuing there and getting heavier in san josé by 10:00, and continuing through 11:00. while it backs off in the north bay, you are getting a chance to dry out around noon, it will taper at that time in san francisco as well. still the heavy rain continues in the tri-valley as well as the peninsula and the south bay with san josé getting heavy rain at noon. notice these little isolated showers here. that's where we could get small hail. temperatures will be colder and we will have moisture leftover to produce brief heavy downpours. it won't be until the evening when all of this pushes off to the south and east when we get a break, but cold air blasting in for tonight. we are going from high temperatures in the low 50s to freezing temperatures for tonight. we will have a freeze warning in effect for all of these areas shaded in purple.

i know we have had a lot of freezing temperatures lately, so it will be even colder tomorrow morning. then we have another cold front coming in for saturday evening into sunday. there's more rain coming for the weekend into early next week, and we do see a break for a couple days, but then the more active weather continues next thursday into friday. so how much snow are we talking here? 16 to 25 inches with this first round of snow coming in. additional snow for the weekend. there may be several feet by the time all is said and down. if you are looking ahead, like, when is it going to warm up some? it's going to be a while. we are looking at our outlook for the next couple of weeks, and the bay area may be well below average in terms of temperatures and above normal in rainfall. looking good, and our temperatures will head to the low 50s for highs, and for san francisco we will see

sarah rudman. >> today is an important day to remember not just those we have lost and how many people have been diagnosed with hiv since the beginning of the epidemic, but how far we have come. we continue to see new cases, new people diagnosed with hiv even here in santa clara county every year. >> let's talk about the advancement with the medication. there are medications for people who are hiv negative, prep and pep they can take if they come in contact with somebody positive that would greatly reduce their chances of catching the virus, right? >> absolutely. these are the most important advances from the next several years. we have prep that is medication you can take before you are exposed. if you are sexually active or have partners with hiv, can you take medication every day as a

want to welcome you to the first day of december, the last month of the year. let's get to the top story this morning, and that's the bay area storm. we have live coverage for you. bob redell is live with how the local agencies are preparing, and mike inouye tracking that morning commute for you. first, we want to head over to meteorologist, kari hall, and she has been timing out the storm for us. >> everybody is getting in on the rain now, and if not it will be there soon. we get a look at the radar with all the wet weather moving in. the heaviest rain in the north bay from marin county to parts of napa county. it's moving across the richmond and san rafael bridge as well. and it's moving into san francisco and over towards oakland and hayward. also light rain falling in walnut creek but it will get heavier in danville and san

ramon moving towards dublin. we see the system rolling into the bay area. it will continue and then start to let up for the north bay about 9:00 to 10:00 this morning. notice the orange and the really bright colors moving in to san josé at about 9:00 to 10:00. that's the more intense rain. it will continue into the tri-valley from 9:00 to 10:00, and then taper into spots like oakland and san francisco. also seeing the rain from palo alto over to the tri-valley. we will be watching that. let's head over to bob redell tracking the rain live in the east bay, bob. >> reporter: if you are a commuter here in the tri-valley, it's good news for you so far because we have fought seen the rain yet. we are definitely feeling the wind, and i can feel a couple drops.

if you look, we're talking about a light drizzle, nothing that will impact your morning commute yet but we are expecting it to u next hour or two, if not sooner. this is video from earlier this morning into our news room of the rain that came down in santa rosa. you can see it was coming down pretty good. not a downpour but enough to make you wet. the city of santa rosa is reminding people who live in and around the burn scar of the 2020 glass fire, remember there's a risk of flash floods and debris flows, and santa rosa is offering free sandbags to residents as do many cities throughout the bay area. this is a sandbag station down the street from us here in dublin. not many are available because they are not expecting this storm to cause much flooding, but it's something to remember in case of a big storm in the future. workers cleared leaves and

debris in san josé to prevent a backup in storm drains, and here in the east bay, pg&e workers cut branches around power lines and removed vegetation that could end up clogging the roadways. and the utility is stockpiling the replacement poles to respond to outages. the rain is just a heavy drizzle, and you get the sense with the wind picking up, whatever is coming is about to drive. we are here at the 580 near the 680 interchange in dublin. it has been a while since we had a good rain so there could be oils on the surface that could make the roads slicker if you are in a rainy situation. keep a good distance between you

whisperer. i want to know, what is your stoke level? >> i will tell you what, it's about nine right now. mother nature arrived on time this morning about 4:30. we are starting to see nice stuff starting to accumulate this morning, and we are getting ready for the big game here later this afternoon. >> people are trying to get there before the weekend. when is the best opportunity to try and get to the sierra? >> that's a great question, kari. i will tell you, right now, if you are on your way now come on up and get into reno and the basin, and chains are required on 88. once this thing starts to settle in, you just mentioned, we are going to start saying one to two, three to four inches of snow per hour over the next several hours. that's just dangerous driving conditions. caltrans will be working hard to keep the state routes open and

highway i-80 open, but when you see that much snow pileup, they will have a hard time keeping up with the snow load, so there's a possibility those highways could close, so be prepared to slow your roll, but maybe wait until friday or on monday to come up to the sierra. >> yeah, a break on friday but there's snow coming for the weekend, and chain controls open up if the roads are open. we want to make sure people get to kirkwood and other areas safely, right, kevin? >> absolutely. you definitely want to get up here and be safe. the other thing is with this much snow, you want to look at the avalanche center, and i would anticipate and i would believe that we are going to see considerable avalanche conditions here in the next several hours, so definitely be aware. ride with care and know before

mid-40s in san francisco. if you are going to wrap up the weekend at the 49ers game, plan on more rain and it will be in the mid-50s with gusty winds. we are looking at chilly temperatures today. we will talk more about what to expect with that rain. mike, how is it looking getting out on the roads? >> mostly clear, kari, but we are looking at a new crash in mountain view. i think they are moving this car soon from northbound to 101, and it's in the middle of the road at ellis, and folks familiar with the area know traffic coming in and building on 237 is slow because of the slow drive on the 101 there near the transition. that's about it for mountain view and sunniville. and there's a little build and a typical pattern as the rain is coming through. the rain is in the same area where the crash was, and we will watch for potential spinouts and there's a little slowing coming over the san mateo bridge because that rain is coming

union organization. it's called the pro working man and woman blue collar roots, and that type of thing. what congress is working on is some of the same things the union is asking for, like paid sick leave so maybe it's a win-win. tonight the white house will also host a black tie event for emmanuel macron and his wife, the first state dinner as biden is president. as is tradition, jill biden is in charge. the white house showed off the place settings and the menu to the press. rented china, by the way, and dinner will be in a big tent on the white house grounds, and the china cannot leave the building. keep in mind, there is tension here. we angered the french when we

we are looking what you are seeing out the window, and you don't have to get up. rain is falling the most in the north bay, and we are seeing it move over towards mill valley. 101, that drive is very sloppy. moving into san francisco, the moderate rain continues. it's just starting to get going in walnut creek and concord with lighter rain there, and has not yet made it to the delta. light rain in the tri-valley from dublin over towards pleasanton and livermore, and it's closing in on san josé. this is what we talk about with the rain shadow. it takes a while before it gets to the valley, but as you get a look at the radar, we are seeing the rain all across northern california. the snow has really been coming down in the sierra. basically all bets are off if you are trying to travel there today. looking at the hour-by-hour forecast with the heaviest rain at 8:00, moving down the

peninsula and approaching san josé at about 10:00. really heavy rain in the tri-valley. notice it starts to let up for the north bay. that's when we get a bit of a break going into the late morning and midafternoon. at 1:00 the rain is still falling in san josé but starting to taper off for san francisco and areas to the north. it may not be until later this evening when we all get a chance to dry out, but we are all also going to have cold air blasting in for the afternoon and into the evening. we are headed for the low 50s today. then we will have freeze warnings going up for tonight and all of these areas shaded in purple, we have had a lot of freezing temperatures lately but it's going to be really cold tomorrow morning. we have more rain coming this weekend with another cold front passing between late saturday into sunday, and some widespread off and on showers that continue into monday. may be a couple days of a break but then another storm system coming in by the end of next week. if you are wondering when are we going to warm up? our outlook for the next six to

ten days shows we are going to see more well below average temperatures continuing for the bay area and for the most part across the west and areas to the north. looking at our inland temperatures for the next seven days, once again, rain today, a break tomorrow, and then more rain for saturday through monday off and on temperatures reaching into the mid-50s. frosty and freezing conditions, and san francisco very chilly with gusty winds and rain throughout the morning. mike, you were looking at issues for the south bay. >> yeah, we have the build and the traditional pattern lighter than yesterday. some folks held off on driving because we talked so much about the rain. that's one factor. a crash heading up into sunniville, mountainville jamming up and approaching 237, and ellis street where there's a crash, one vehicle in the middle lane of northbound 101, and

combine those two factors along with the rain coming in that kari showed you, creeping through san josé. and silicon a factor now, and they are slowing bart because they want to make sure they can brake on the rails. back to you. happening now, south bay transit leaders getting ready to launch an imminent domain process for the expansion of bart into san josé. some downtown properties will likely eventually be needed to complete the projects, and in some cases successful businesses now operating there may be forced to leave. today the vta is holding a public hearing on whether a new resolution will be needed to kick start the process. we are keeping close tabs on the new storm rolling through the bay area. we will take you back out to one area where the wet weather is now moving in. plus, addressing inequities. how the bay area is marking world aids day. we a back inre

welcome back. we're moving you forward with a look at today's top stories. starting with our microclimate weather alert, the rain is rolling into the bay area today. >> let's go to bob redell, and i am told you are starting to see rain pick up a little bit. bob, how is it looking there? >> reporter: we are starting to get a heavy drizzle and starting to get accumulation, and this is 580 heading westbound, and the roads are becoming wet. we are expecting the rain to pick up as we get further into the morning commute. keep in mind, you want to watch your speed. just because it says 65 miles per hour, doesn't mean you

marking world aids day, and the world has a better handle on aids than it did years ago. it still affects poor communities and communities of color the most. today's commemorations includes a vigil at san josé city hall. this is where you can see the aids quilt. the rain is canceling the city's pride flag raising event. in san francisco, there's a march and vigil planned at city hall and the annual name reading in san francisco's memorial grove. >> we are already seeing some of the cancelations because of the rain. kari? >> yeah, it's still raining and it will continue for a lot of areas for the next few hours. some of the heavier rain moving through the north bay and approaching san francisco. we are going to see it move from north to south as we go into the next hours. big concerns for folks hitting the road already. we are seeing the camera shake from time to time, and that rain
