you. 4:30. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at the commute and traffic in just a bit, but first, breaking news. we want to keep going with you, mike. you have breaking news. >> let's start with this deadly crash. sad news here. shutting down the dublin interchange. we'll show you what cal trans has. here we go. there's the deadly crash with the crash sideways here. i'm going to step over to the map and step in for folks so you can see what's going on. this is a still camera from the cal trans. this is a transition off west 580 onto northbound 680. this vehicle is sideways. lots of damage is all we can tell. there's a crew on scene but what we need is for the coroner to arrive. we're looking at a live shot and looking at traffic flowing very smoothly. the crash is farther off in the distance. even though the connector is completely closed, the traffic is getting by and folks are

passing by and looping back. you can also exit onto city streets, take dublin boulevard to the interchange. that can get very crowded very quickly. the cooner should be on scene in the next few minutes. the commute is very light right now. >> we're starting with a look at storm ranger. we're getting ready for our next round of rain. we powered up our mobile doppler radar. it's a dry start this morning but the storm system is just to the north and that will be moving in as we go into today. for the north bay, the rain moves in around 2:00 to 3:00 and spreads across the rest of the bay area later on this evening. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. >> a new warning on the peninsula. young coyotes are on the move prompting some communities to take precautions when it comes to young children and pets. >> we spoke with several people who had run-ins with the animals. >> stay away from this trail or enter at your own risk.

that's the message redwood city has been posting on the bay trail after what they say is an increase in coyote sightings. >> we were driving into our complex. the light shone on the coyote, and it just stood there and stared at us. >> they look like dogs but they're a little different. >> every person where spoke with in this neighborhood said they had at least one encounter with a coyote in the past weeks. some more concerning than others. >> we started to move away, he came back towards us. i tried to scare him away, wave my hands, yell at him. he would go away for a few minutes. as i started to move on, it was like he was following us. >> this is just in the last three, four months. >> it's those reports and images like this that has prompted the city to put up these warning signs. especially if you have small

children or are walking pets at dawn or dusk hours. that's not the solution. she says instead, every city should start by having its own response team. >> they need a system to take reports from the public and map it out so we can see where the hot spots are and do investigations there and go, well, somebody is feeding purposely or here's a feral cat feeding station. we need to get that under control. >> redwood city shared tips on how to scare off a coyote, but to avoid a coyote from following you, you need to make sure you follow through and don't stop until it's long gone. >> a large garbage bag. you open it up, fill it up with a bit of air and snap it in the air. it's this billowy thing that scares the heck out of coyotes and it's so simple to have with you. >> police in san jose investigating a deadly accident involving a pedestrian. it happened last night around 8:00 p.m. near little orchard

years. balwani's attorneys argued for no time. >> we respectfully disagree with the result in the case. we're disappointed in the outcome and we plan to appeal and keep on fighting for our client. >> the sentencing comes weeks after the ceo elizabeth holmes was sentenced to 11 years in prison. so why is balwani's sentence longer here. we ask one expert about that? >> i think what played in the judge's mind is that balwani is the adult in the room or he was during this whole affair. he was 37 when he met elizabeth holmes. at the time, she was an 18-year-old high school student. he had extensive business experience. he should have known better and he should have shut this thing down before it became the disaster it was. >> balwani has been order to surrender on march 15th. >> russian forces now targeting ukraine's power, water, and heating systems.

welcome to thursday morning. a quick glimpse of the golden gate bridge there. we're keeping tabs on it. 4:47. mike also keeping tabs on a bad accident. >> the worst part of my job is to report a deadly crash, and that's what we have right now. we're looking at the traffic impact because of this tragedy. it does demand an investigation, and the coroner has been called to the scene. let me step into this shot that we get courtesy of one of the cal trans cameras. this is the connector to 680 coming off 580. very early in the commute so

this car and the tow trucks are on hold until the coroner gets there. the coroner should arrive i'm hoping in the next ten minutes and then the investigation can continue. likely as we look at the map, that should last and hopefully looking at clearing possibly starting to clear some of the connector by 5:00, but right now, folks i believe are circling back, exiting at san ramon and getting back on the connector. you can connect to 680 off 580. the dublin interchange is going to delay you, but the traffic is lighter and the conditions great right now. >> good right now as we're getting ready for our next storm system that's going to be moving in. we powered up our storm ranger on top of san bruno mountain. this is what we're expecting, rain for the evening commute. as we go through later tonight, that rain clears out. our next round will be a heavier rain starting on saturday with some high wind gusts and it also could cause some flood issues as we get those clogged street

drains and quick moving creeks and rivers as the water rises quickly. for the weekend, we're also getting ready for a lot of heavy sierra snow that may close the roads once again. here's alic at storm ranger, the red is our doppler radar parked on san bruno mountain. when the rain comes in, it's for the afternoon to evening hours starting in the north bay with quick and heavy rain moving through the bay area. by 11:00, it's passing through san francisco and parts of the east bay. while the north bay is starting to clear out. tomorrow looks mostly dry all the way up to the evening and then we see the next round of rain moving in very early on saturday morning. as we wake up, we're going to hear the rain hitting the roof and pouring throughout much of the day, and even waves of rain going into early on sunday. for the sierra, we talked about this, a lot of heavy snow that will close the roadways and the potential of getting up to 29 inches of snow in tahoe city. 58 in kingdale and 54 in

kirkwood. for us, we're going to see this initial round of rain come in with about a tenth to a quarter-inch of rain, but the however. rain continues throughout the weekend. it's going to be pretty widespread as we go throughout the next several days with another storm system moving through by the end of next week. pretty active busy weather pattern with chilly temperatures, only reaching into the mid to upper 50s and morning temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s with a high only at 50 degrees to start out early next week. now we're going to turn to our climate crisis. we have world leaders flocking to montreal, canada, this week to work on a new set of goals aimed at slowing down the loss of our natural world. it's known as cop-15 and it focuses on the world's biodiversity. things like plants and animal species. the comes after countries gathered in egypt to tackle the

a good morning to you on this thursday. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll get a look at the forecast shortly with the rain coming up, but mike has breaking news this morning affecting commuters in the east bay. >> exactly, closed right now. chp has closed the dublin interchange for this crash. on the cal trans camera that is on northbound 680 coming off 580, this live look doesn't tell a lot, so i step in and show you there's a tow truck that has been here as we have been monitoring, been there since about 4:00 in the morning. over here, a couple vehicles but this van has appeared. i believe that is the alameda county coroner that has arrived on scene and they're doing an investigation. the car i believe is the one involved in the deadly incident. it's blocking the connector from west 580 where we see from time to time a little slowing. that connector is closed to northbound 680. folks are moving by, getting back on at foothill and getting back on 680. if that is indeed the coroner's van,
