it is friday. did you hear my voice crack? it is friday. >> hold it in. >> be cool. >> thank you for joining us this morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. let's say good morning to mike. we'll get a look at that forecast. kari, i think we're planning for some rain? i'm excited about the rain, but we do have a little bit of a break today. mostly cloudy skies. as we take a look at storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar, it is not giving us any rain as of now. as we go into the next couple of days, we'll turn our attention to the storm system that's off the coast. that will be moving in as we go into early tomorrow morning. it first starts in the north bay. tomorrow morning at 9:00 it's hitting san francisco. moving into the east bay we'll see round after round of rain going into tomorrow afternoon

into the evening. it also continues into sunday. we'll talk about the impact and what you can expect coming up. mike, you were hearing about a crash. >> i heard about a three vehicle crash in walnut creek after the two at the berkeley curve. one of them took over an hour. that's had plenty of time to clear up and everything is okay near the bay bridge. the walnut creek crash is here. three vehicles involved heading south before the 24 interchange. we don't see any slowing. it's been there in the report for about ten minutes. we'll track that as far as the sensors go. no major injuries but a couple of lanes blocked. if it doesn't clear quickly, we'll see the sensors change. a nice, easy drive. behind me some fog registering. back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking for you right now brittney griner is back on the ground in america after close to 300 days behind bars in russia. >> her plane landed in texas overnight following yesterday's prisoner swap orchestrated by the white house. the video shows her disembarking the airplane in san antonio,

local leader who fought to transform her community. as stephanie magallon reports, maria marcelo died while helping other people cross the street. >> reporter: maria marcello leaves behind three children. a procession coming from the scene of a horrific accident that took the life of a fierce leader. some say the heart of the san jose community. [ speaking non-english ]. >> reporter: she's going straight to heaven, says a longtime friend of maria marcelo, who was struck and killed while leaving a pilgrimage wednesday might. marcelo was trying to help people cross the street when a vehicle struck her. "it was so horrible, i couldn't

scream. i continue to hear her," she says. her sister says she was always trying to unite her community. this was supposed to be the celebration of an event organized by marcelo. in her place were her children surrounded by the many lives she touched. >> she would walk in a room and take over. maria was amazing at building community. you can see tonight this is the community she built. >> reporter: marcelo founded several groups to transform and help her community. >> maria poured into a lot of us and built a fantastic leaders and now it's time for us to step up and fill some big shoes and carry that forward. >> reporter: they're hoping to do that with the help of a memorial community fund that will pay for several programs in her honor. stephanie magallon for "today in the bay."

happening today in oakley, remembering alexis gabe. hundreds are expected to gather for a candlelight memorial. gabe's ex-boyfriend killed her in his antioch home and for months her remains could not be located. last month that changed when her partial remains were identified . they say her boyfriend lunged at them with a knife. the fda is allowing children under the age of 5 to receive the omicron-specific booster. this would mean the third shot for most children in that age group. regulators will review data in january to see if a fourth booster might be necessary. 4:38. costco suddenly feeling a holiday pinch. coming up on "today in the bay," where shoppers are apparently going instead other than buying

forecasts as surging inflation is forcing fewer big ticket items to be purchased. walmart and target have noted a shift in consumer spending as food and gas prices remain high. shoppers are giving more priority to food and other necessities. costco tends to attract higher income shoppers than big box rivals because people need to have enough money to buy in bulk even if prices are lower per item. twitter is rolling out new controls as soon as next week to let companies keep ads appearing above and below certain words. the feature is part of twitter's effort to lure back marketers who pulled ads off the platform since it was bought by elon musk amid reports hate speech has risen and several banned or suspended accounts were reinstated. twitter earned nearly 90% of its revenue from selling digital ads, guys. >> thank you so much, silvana. it is 4:43 for you on this

you'll need some warm coffee this morning. not as cold as it's been, but, then again, i did just run from the car. we have a blanket of clouds that helps a little bit and we're seeing some fog. i want to show you where visibility is the lowest right now. we've seen foggy mornings the past several days and it is getting a lot worse for the napa area where visibility is down to about half of a mile due to the fog rolling in and we're seeing the visibility getting lower in morgan hill at a mile and three-quarters. elsewhere it is clear but we'll be watching the north bay. right now in the south bay, as it clear start this morning. chilly temperatures. we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds throughout today, but mostly cloudy with our temperatures reaching into the upper 50s for this afternoon. all attention goes to tomorrow when this next storm system is going to be coming in, and it starts out with a wind advisory for all of the bay area. those gusts may reach 35 to 50 miles per hour for the coast and mountains and across the area

from about midnight to 3:00 we could see a lot of those high wind gusts kicking up that could bring down trees and also have impacts to power. make sure you are prepared for that. as we go hour by hour with our wind forecast, we are seeing once again the highest winds by tomorrow afternoon as those storms pick up, we could see the gusts at half moon bay reaching 40 miles per hour. and this is more of a southerly wind out ahead of the colder temperatures that will be coming in behind the system. but we're also looking at the rain starting from the north. in the north bay during the overnight hours and spreading across the bay area going into early tomorrow we'll see the rain covering much of the bay area with some breaks during the afternoon but don't let your guard down. there will be more rain behind that. and it continues into sunday as well, even by sunday night we're still seeing the showers. we're looking at the possibility of some very heavy rainfall in some spots. there could be more than 2 inches of rain in total as we go throughout the weekend for spots like fremont and dublin as well

as los gatos. the north bay could see over an inch of rain. and we're expecting really heavy snow for the sierra. winter storm warnings up for the entire range as we could see about 2 to 5 feet of snow this weekend along with some high winds. snowfall totals are picking up, and we're looking at the potential of 32 inches in incline village. 53 in kirkwood. beyond that, we are going to have a chance to dry out. i know we're looking at next week as we go toward the end of next week there may be spotty showers, but we're looking at a chance to let all of that water soak in. it will be chilly. so we're focused on the weekend with all of the active weather, and we'll have more updates throughout the day. mike, you are seeing an update on the crash. at least for a short time three lanes were blocked approaching olympic.

>> gia vang picks up the story. a woman saw sarah grabbed and taken into custody. it's been her mission for more than a year to bring sarah home. the last update anita got sarah was on a layover in dubai. anita will drive her back to fresno where both are from as she helps repair the damage months in a russian detention center and nearly a year in a prison system have done to her friend. >> i'm worried about her. i have talked to her. i know she has a lot of anxiety and depression and ptsd. we just got to get her the help to get her back on her feet. >> reporter: she was teaching english but when she tried to leave the country in 2021 she was convicted and incarcerated. she hurt a male roommate who was beating her. anita says she won't believe it until she is able to hug her
