coming up in a few minutes. 880 flowing smoothly. a little volume builds through the east bay like oakland. no slowing for the sensors. we'll show you how things are stacking up for that early commute on this friday coming up. in a case completely unrelated to brittney griner's case a woman is on her way home and just happened to serve time in the same russian prison as brittney griner. sarah krivanek taught in russia. friends say she got in a violent altercation with a male roommate that ended with her roommate receiving facial injuries. the court convicted her of assault and she served one year in jail. they say she acted in self-defense and was wrongfully convicted. the white house continues to work to get american prisoner paul whelan out of russia. >> scott, the white house says we don't have anyone to trade.
5:44 am
>> exactly right. that's because the white house says we don't have a russian spy in custody. the white house says the russians want to trade spy for spy. paul whelan in russian custody has been charged with spying for america. the white house says he's not a spy. new video from russian television of the prisoner swap that did work out, brittney griner, for the merchant of death, arms dealer viktor bout. family cheering as viktor bout returned home. bout, we suspect, has friends in the russian intelligence community. the brother of captive paul whelan will speak on the "today" show later today. earlier the family issued an incredibly generous and heartfelt statement saying they were glad for brittney that the white house made the right decision to take the russians up on their offer one for one. >> she's on the ground. >> stop it. >> yep, she's on the ground. >> great day.
5:45 am
>> griner's wife learning she was free in the oval office with the president, vice president, secretary of state. kyrsten sinema says she's no longer a democrat, calling herself an independent. that is not unusual. bernie sanders and angus king from maine says the same thing. sinema says she will not caucus with the republicans. she's hard to figure out. before she became a senator she was very left with the green party, extremely progressive. moved to the right to the democrats in 2004 where she racked up one of the most conservative voting records in the party and now is presumably moving right again. the democrats are now back to 50 democrats with the vice president breaking tie votes. again, not clear if sinema wouldn't vote with the democrats, but this gives a lot of power back to old joe manchin from west virginia.
5:46 am
democrats probably very glad they won georgia. the house passed the respect for marriage act which codifies interracial and same sex marriage in case the supreme court decides to reverse its previous decisions on those cases. the bill now goes to the president's desk. we're talking about everything that goes on in washington really, on social media, follow me on twitter@scottmcgrew. things are getting down to the nitty-gritty at the world cup and some of the best teams now squaring off today and tomorrow in the quarterfinals. >> telemundo 48's carlos yustis has been in qatar since the tournament kicked off. a preview of today's big games that can only start with a look at brazil. >> reporter: kris, marcus, regards from portugal where cristiano ronaldo's team is preparing for tomorrow. tonight the quarterfinals kick off in the fifa qatar 2022. brazil will be facing croatia in
5:47 am
the first match of the day. brazil one of the top favorites to win this tournament. a great display on the round of 16. they advance through the group stage without any trouble. they're the favorites to reach the final. they are going to face a croatia team that is aging. even though they reached the finals four years ago and have great players, they don't seem to be as cohesive as four years ago and to me brazil should be taking this match. later on on the match we're all waiting for, argentina will be facing the netherlands. lionel messi's team found its footing and was able to advance and then struggling on the round of 16 but making to this round they will face a dutch team. they haven't had a lot of problems to advance. they face a u.s. team that seems
5:48 am
to be naive on how they were facing the dutch team and were able to reach this match. and we'll see who actually advances. the theory is that in the semifinal we'll be seeing brazil and argentina and it will be a powerhouse matchup between these two world champions. that will be today and we'll be here to cover it, everything that happens from doha. back to you. >> i would say viva brazil but that's not spanish. >> i wonder how you say it in portuguese. your chance to see some iconic pieces of music history in san francisco. >> indianapolis colts owner jim irsay owns the items that includes guitars used by legends like janis joplin and kurt cobain and piano played by elton john and john lennon, though at different times. they also have a microphone that jim morrison from the doors used. the collection will be on

5:50 am
there wasn't a lot of rain there but in kent field, parts of the north bay, about half an inch, a quarter inch, and now it's foggy after all that moisture left on the ground. low visibility in spots especially around napa. by tomorrow, we're getting ready for high winds and rain. we'll be going up and we could see gusts at 35 to 50 miles per hour, mainly for the mountains and the coastline. but across the region we could see some gusty winds. the winds start to pick up as we head into tonight into the day tomorrow with peak winds by late morning into the afternoon. and then it starts to calm down. that's rushing up into the storm system and will bring us rain throughout much of the day tomorrow. there will be some breaks in between and especially on sunday there may be more breaks but the rain will continue even into sunday night. and the rainfall totals may be
5:51 am
quite heavy in some areas reaching mostly an inch of rain but there could be as much as over 2 inches of rain, fremont, other areas where the heavier rain sets up there could be over 2 inches in total. we're going to dry out for a while, but by the end of next week there may be another chance of rain. we do have several days of dry conditions at least to start out next week. we're really focused on tomorrow with the high winds and heavy rains and, of course, i know you're making weekend plans. there won't be a lot of breaks but you can track it all with the nbc bay area app. mike, we have our typical slowing in the south bay? the pattern, even on a friday, north 101 heading up from 680 to just shy of oakland road, also this for the last few weeks, another patch up by sjc. that's the airport. heading up past sfo on the peninsula will continue for 101. down here we're seeing more slowing in san martin up to
