satellite radar. you can see not only rain but also sierra snow coming down right now. storm system moved in late overnight. >> not only satellite and radar, we have our exclusive mobile doppler radar storm ranger on top of san bruno mountains. >> petaluma coming down through areas like livermore, around san francisco, but also down through san jose and also the santa cruz mountains is going to be a bull's-eye that we're really keeping a close eye on. in addition to the rain, we're also concerned about the wind. gusty conditions upwards of 50 plus miles per hour could be a possibility. >> that's right. if the rain didn't wake you up this morning, that wind definitely did. we could see those gusts upwards of 50 miles an hour on those local mountain tops. we're going to be tracking the heavy rain all morning long, talk about the rain totals in different parts of the bay area as well as the chance for isolated thunderstorms. so with a lot of instability in the atmosphere today on to tomorrow, we could see a possibility of some hail, some strong wind and also we're going to take you to the sierra. the snow will be coming down not in inches but in feet, vianey.

>> really heavy, not a good day to travel to lake tahoe. we've got you covered. all right, vianey and cynthia, thanks so much. as you just heard from them, the wind is expected to be persistent today. "today in the bay's" gia vang picks up our coverage with the are preps for the storm. >> reporter: this is just one of the signs in marin county that a big storm is about to hit. >> i definitely make sure my downspouts are working and my drains are cleared. >> that's good advice as we stand at the intersection in marin city, a usual spot for flooding. it's supposed to pour 2 to 3 inches of rain in this county through the weekend. >> unfortunately this community only has one way in and out. so once it's flooded, people are very isolated and there aren't a lot of resources. they can't even get to the nearby store. the winds are going to be quite strong really from about midnight to 1:00 p.m.

>> reporter: they'll be watching that gauge, but it's not just rain they're contending with. >> we put a gauge in the manhole over hear so we could watch it rise. >> reporter: wind gusts strong enough all over the bay area that the national weather service issued a wind advisory from midnight through saturday afternoon saying it could knock down power lines. >> we have an all hands on deck response at pg&e to address any issues that could include limb, debris that could result in power outages. >> reporter: concerns about mudslides, scarred by wildfires. officials warn you might want to reassess any plans. >> i do have to go out near mount tam, which will concern me. it's going to be a brutal drive maybe. >> reporter: if you haven't already, secure anything loose on your property as well. patio furniture, garbage cans, those holiday decorations, and rake those leaves so the rain can find its way to a drain.

while covering a match. the renowned soccer journalist was only 48 years old. his death is raising a lot of questions but many of the details are still unclear. nbc news confirms wall collapsed yesterday in the press box during the argentinian/netherlands quarter final match. he was tended to by paramedics, but an official cause of death has not been announced. on monday, wall wrote on his personal website he wasn't feeling well and visited a medical clinic in qatar where he was told he may have bronchitis and was given antibiotics. he said he tested negative for covid. wall recently made international headlines after writing about an incident where he was detained by security going into a match because he refused to remove this rainbow t-shirt. he wrote he wore the shirt in honor of his brother who is gay. same-sex relationships are illegal in qatar. after learning the news of his death, his wife, a prominent

doctor took to twitter to say his death was a complete shock. she then thanked her husband's soccer family and her friends for support she's been receiving. the san jose earthquake have since released a statement saying, quote, we send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of long time soccer journalist grant wahl. his commitment and passion to growing the world's game was unparalleled. he will be greatly missed. san francisco police are on the lookout for a driver involved in a hit and run involving a pedestrian. it happened just before 8:00 last night on the 1900 block of evans avenue in the city's bay view district. when police arrived, they found that the man who had been hit was injured. he was taken to the hospital for treatment, though it's unclear how serious his injuries are. police are telling us the crash involved a commercial type vehicle. uniting in love for alexis gabe. it was a somber gathering

outside of oakley's civic center to remember a young lifeoo short. alexis gabe, her body dumped in a remote part of amador county, and her partial remains found months later. as "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd tells us, that heartbreaking discovery isn't stopping her family from fighting for justice. >> her spirit brought our sister cities together and really formed a community. >> that community coming out in the cold tonight in front of oakley's civic center to remember alexis gabe. >> her laugh was just infectious. you could hear it through the hallways and you would just smile knowing it was her. >> reporter: the community has decided to redirect the pain as support for the gabe family. >> you guys gave us so much strength to keep us moving forward, so much for coming here tonight to grieve with us and to pray with us.

i'm pretty sure our daughter is up there smiling watching us right now. >> reporter: many people here have been supporting the family since she disappeared back in january after visiting her ex-boyfriend marshal jones in antioch. hundreds of people searching for her. last month her partial remains were found in a wooded area in amador county. investigators believe jones killed gabe. jones himself was killed by law enforcement in seattle when they attempted to arrest him in june. the family is vowing to push forward. >> we're trying to file a case against them for assisting. >> reporter: people here say they won't stop looking for the rest of her remains. >> members of this community say that they will keep a candle lit for alexis gabe. they won't stop fighting for her and her family until they seek

welcome back. moving you forward, we are taking a live look outside in san rafael as the rain is coming down, and we are expecting much more of this as the day progresses. vianey arana and cynthia paymantel will be along in just a few minutes with your full microclimate weather alert. covid cases are forcing alameda county to bring back its mask mandate in specific settings. alameda county is in the cdc's medium covid tier, which is based on the impact to local hospitals. the county is now requiring masks in homeless and emergency shelters, heating centers and detention facilities. masks are not required in all crowded indoor places, but they are recommended. napa, solano, and contra costa counties are in the medium tier.

san francisco, santa clara county stands alone in the highest tier in red. the fda is now allowing young kids to get the covid booster, and santa clara county is offering appointments. beginning next week, kids 5 years old and younger can get their shot. this booster specifically targets the omicron variant. for most children it will be their third shot. if your child has already received three doses, no more boosters for now. happening today, the north pole is taking over the bay area. santacon returns once again this year in both san francisco and san jose, so you might notice crowds of people dressed as santa claus or elves on that epic bar crawl and toy drive. santacon in san francisco runs from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. rain or shine. it's free with no registration required. organizers ask you bring a new

be. it's going to be pounding rain throughout the evening. >> it's going to be crazy, so let's get right to your microclimate forecast. i'm sure you want to know how much rain and the timing of it all. let's get to this look of unfortunately a very soggy christmas in the park. 54 degrees in san jose. so the temperatures are mild, but this is the big story here. we are under a microclimate weather alert because a system moved in late overnight. we've got our mobile doppler radar storm ranger scanning and ready go. we're the only one in the bay areas that have it. it does a nice job of showcasing the pockets of rain. you can see santa rosa down through san jose as well in through parts of the east bay and the south bay, expect to see similar conditions all day long, in addition to the rain, we're also talking about the wind advisory. this will be in place until 3:00 p.m. there's also a gale warning in place for the coast and the inner bay, for all bay area counties. timing-wise right now, if you look by 9:00 a.m., we get those heavy pockets really moving through, and then there's a bit

of a bull's-eye where the orange and the purple glows are, especially through the santa cruz mountains. here to tell us about how much rain we're going to see in the bay area, let's send it over to forecaster cinthia. >> let's start off in the north bay. santa rosa an inch of rain as the afternoon goes up and mill valley in mount tam over an inch as the storm moves through. the concern's really in the north bay, santa rosa, the glass fire. so a debris flow could be a concern as well as any localized flooding in case you didn't have a chance to go out there and rake off the leaves. then the peninsula, palo alto and down in san jose, these areas typically get rain shadowed by the santa cruz mountains. we can see they're nearing 1.25 inch of rain as the afternoon goes on. that's the red that you see here as well as the purple. as we advance this time stamp through tomorrow, the instability is very high in the atmosphere. so we could see some strong bursts of rain as the evening goes on.

and that's going to rack up these totals to over an inch and a half of rain in the santa cruz mountains, and then the totals in the north bay will also start to add up around santa rosa, mill valley, even into concord, over 1.25 inches of rain there. a very hefty storm that's coming on through. i want to walk you through our water rain here. that's measured through october 1st into july, and how are we doing now? we're still looking at a little bit of a deficit in the north bay. really, the amounts that we're seeing are over in livermore and san jose. just because these storms have been more focused in the south bay and east bay recently. we're hoping with this storm that's more north bay focused, we can see some of these percentages really go up. santa rosa, we're looking at 55% of normal rain year-to-date. look at livermore and san jose. we're doing very well. we're going to keep you updated with these rain totals as the day goes on. >> that water is so beneficial when it comes to our drought. it will be an important impact. if you're wondering when the rain is going to be moving out. notice by about 3:00 p.m., we

still get a lot of those heavy cells and pockets through the south bay. then it becomes more scattered. into sunday morning, we're also going to see this cool front sweep behind it tonight into sunday. if you're heading out to the 49ers game, that could also impact as well, not only your commute into the evening but also the game. temperature-wise, we're going to be in the 50s today, overnight lows dropping down into the 40s and 30s. as this cold front passes through, that's also going to make way for a cold air blast. i mentioned that isolated thunder chance sba sunday. we'll keep that in the forecast. the good news is it's looking like a december forecast. if you notice out ahead into thursday and friday, we've got another round of rain expected to make its move starting on thursday and friday. so the thing we'll be monitoring heading into monday morning and tuesday is going to be those low 30s. we could see below freezing temperatures, especially for those sheltered valleys. the biggest impact today will be the wind. keep that in mind, especially for some of those higher elevation areas. the wind advisory is in effect

good morning, it is 7:42. buenos dias, off to a stormy start. if you don't have to drive anywhere, don't do it. that ponding water is going to be an issue, especially once we get to the evening. 54 degrees in san jose. christmas in the park unfortunately is going to be a soggy one. satellite and radar, not only do we have a lot of rain, plenty of sierra snow and we've got our storm ranger mobile doppler radar working hard. you can see rain coming down in santa rosa, petaluma, in through san francisco and the east bay. we've got a couple of pockets of breaks in through the east bay, but even then expect for that rain to continue all day long. widespread down through the south bay, also the santa cruz mountains, not a good day to travel to highway 17. in addition to that we're also monitoring the wind. in san jose from the southeast,

26 miles per hour, really the gale warning around the coastline in san francisco is going to be an issue. we're talking about wind advisories in effect until 3:00 p.m. in addition to the wind, we're monitoring sierra snow, there's going to be plenty of it. let's go ahead and get a look at the latest conditions with cinthia. >> if you don't have to go anywhere, don't. like kevin cooper was saying, if you are thinking about going to the sierra today, don't. you might want to wait it out until possibly next weekend. that's because we are under a winter storm warning. this is all the area in the pink for the sierra that you see behind me, and this is going to go until monday morning. the snow that's coming down is not piling up in inches. it's piling up in feet. we can see upwards of 2 to 5 feet of snow, upwards of 7,000 feet in elevation. another thing to monitor are the winds. those gusts could go anywhere from 50 miles an hour to 100 miles an hour on the upper mountain tops. now road closures are also possible. just keep an eye on any chain controls, if you are in the area already. aside from that, we also have an

avalanche watch. this is going through monday morning for the greater tahoe area. that heavy snow pack that we're getting this weekend is building up on top of the weak snow pack. so travel definitely not recommended in the coming days. now, this is very good news, of course, for skier and snow boarders for the coming days. if you're going up 80 into king vail, 52 inches of fresh powder. we're looking at south lake tahoe, 39 inches of some fresh powder. i was talking with vianey about the snow pac, how is it looking right now? >> you mentioned that. it's very important when it comes to our water supply in addition to the drought conditions. here's the latest number when it comes to the statewide average, 156%. this is a fantastic start to the december winter months leading into january is where it's really going to count. right now in the north, about 151%. that's going to be really nice to see when it comes to the

welcome back at 7:48 on your saturday morning, you can see the flags blowing at oracle park on this wet and windy morning. we'll have another look at the forecast in just a few minutes. but first, a recent cdc health survey found as many as 40% of people in the bay area don't get enough sleep each night. consumer investigator chris chmura spoke with some sleep experts to learn how to get more shut eye. >> we enlisted two pros who specialize in sleep, and we asked a barrage of questions.

the first one, how much sleep should we be getting? >> most of us need seven to nine hours. >> sleep is a nutrient and our bodies need it. >> we really have to give sleep a chance. >> set a night time routine for z's, empty the trash, do the dishes, check the door lock, whatever. just do the same thing every night. >> this will begin to prepare our bodies and minds for sleep to follow. >> and when you're doing your routine. >> keep things calm, keep things quiet. >> terry and emerson both said proper lighting is key. if you have light bulbs that can change color, change them. move away from those bright blue daylight tones and toward dusky orange and yellow hues. also, go minimal in the bedroom. >> physical clutter equals mental clutter. >> if your mind races about tasks in the day ahead just as you trying to get into bed, terry says don't worry. just write out a tomorrow to-do list. >> just put it on paper. the old fashioned way, and then

ready for us. >> thanks, willie. we hope you do tune in to willie tomorrow at 6:00 a.m., and stick right hear for your local news on "today in the bay" with us at 7:00. let's get a quick look at the top stories we're following. in the north bay rain and wind have been pounding marin all night and could last into the afternoon. there were warning signs out in parts of the county prone to flooding. it's supposed to pour 2 to 3 inches of rain throughout the weekend. people there are also contending with wind gusts that could reach up to 55 miles per hour in some places. the national weather service issued a wind advisory for the bay area saying it could knock down some power lines. the storm has people reassessing their plans for today. >> i do have to go out near mount tam, which will concern me. it's going to be a brutal drive maybe. >> if there is a break in the rain and wind, officials are asking you to secure anything that's loose on your property and make sure your leaves are raked so that the rain can make its way to a drain.

some showers pushing through. temperatures will be in the 50s, gusts, but really once we start saeg the rain come down it creates that chilly effect towards the end of the game. we start to see those temperatures back off into the 50s dropping down probably into the 40s. in addition to the poncho, wear gloves. i made that mistake last time. once you get that windchill effect, it really just kind of becomes too much for me, and i'm a california girl, and it's outside, so right now we are planning, which means the tailgating aspect of this is also going to be impacted. how long is this rain going to last. when's our next chance of rain? let's send it over to cinthia. >> very stormy saturday lingering on into tomorrow, possibly monday as well. once the storm does exit, we're looking at a very cold blast of air behind it. temperatures are only going to be in the 50s in san francisco, but i want to draw your attention to next weekend. look at that, more rain possible thursday on into friday. but as we move it on inland,
