we've been dealing with it, but now it is calming down. take a look at the storm system. the cold air is starting to move into the north bay. we're in the upper 30s there but low to mid-40s elsewhere. as you get ready to head out, this is a live look. the roads are still wet. there are puddles out there and also dealing with cars kicking up the water ahead of you. as we go into today it will get a chance to soak into the ground. our temperatures go from low 40s to low 50s. it's going to be a cool day. we're keeping the jackets on as we only make it up to 53 in san jose as well as dublin and fremont. 55 in novato as well as santa rosa. how much rain we measure coming up in a few minutes. mike, you've been looking at one major issue for the roads. slick roadways is an issue. a number of cars going off the roadways. i'm going to say maybe traction might be an issue. over here in sunol chp says

there is a big rig but it's off to the shoulder. i think they pulled over for mechanical issues. that will be a distraction. no lanes blocked. north 242, there's a crash there still over on the shoulder and possibly sticking out into the slow lanes opposite your commute. no problems down the east shore freeway. the bay bridge is clear. baback to you. new video overnight of a house fire in san jose. this happened around three hours ago near fleming avenue. you can see the flames shooting up through the roof. crews on the scene for two and a half hours. we are still working to learn the cause of the fire and whether anyone was hurt. new this morning a new cdc report indicates 25% of americans are testing positive for the flu leading to a spike in hospitalizations with admissions at its highest level in a decade.

"today in the bay's" drew petrimoulx is live in washington with a closer look at the argument from republican critics. good morning, drew. >> reporter: well, good morning, kris. we are hearing from an official on that plane with brittney griner as she made her way back to the u.s. this was the scene inside the plane as brittney griner made her way from a russian penal colony back home to the u.s. finally on american soil griner posing with her wife and a government official who spent months on the team negotiating her release. >> she jumped on the plane and said hi to everyone, making a personal connection, shaking hands, saying thank you. i found someone who was kind and authentic. >> reporter: after nearly a year in russian captivity there is concern over the deal that secured her freedom. griner was traded for viktor

>> drew, before you go, so is it still too early to know whether or not griner is going to play basketball again? >> reporter: we haven't heard any word yet on whether or not she plans to return to the court this season. it's already under way. the players association saying right now really their focus is on her health and well-being but they would love to see her return to the court soon. >> thank you, drew. it is 5:06 and happening tonight major changes kick off for late night and early morning commuters who drive through sunol. the stretch of northbound 680 will be closed on weekdays while workers repave the road. it will start from 84 junction in sunol to the sunol boulevard exit in pleasanton. it will happen monday through friday from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the overnight closure is expected to continue through april. caltrans says this is needed to make the road smoother. it may cause traffic, they are happy to see the road improvements.

>> the freeway needs to be improved. it's been a mess for years. very loud, very bumpy. >> it will be nice. caltrans says signs will guide drivers to detours along sunol road and bernal avenue. a heads-up for some sonoma county parents this morning. education leaders are canceling school at montgomery elementary school today because the school current lip has no running water. the district is not indicating what led to that water outage. also, in the wake of the recent rain and cooler temperatures, cal fire is moving forward with lifted burn restrictions in the north bay. the agency is allowing burn permits to be issued in napa, solano and sonoma counties starting at 8:00 this morning. yolo and colusa counties are included. cal fire warns the recent wet weather they are still in a year round fire season.

rain moving out of the bay after really just saturating us over the week. the recent rains are hardly enough to pull us out of the drought, a really great start. >> hopefully it does continue and we're going to head into drier weather so let's take a look back at how much rain we measured over the weekend. with it starting in the north bay on friday evening, we saw it really pick up saturday morning. taking a look at those numbers, 1 3/4 in santa rosa and mill valley around the mt. tam area over 4 inches of rain. take a look at the uvas canyon area. over 6 inches in fremont, an inch and a half. for parts of the tri-valley an inch and a half. danville measured nearly 3 inches of rain. now that is moving on out we'll have a chance to dry out and also get a break from all of that busy weather over the weekend but we're also going to have some cool temperatures and

we're starting out with some wet roads. i'll be tracking all of that. mike, you've been keeping an eye on the roads and where you can find lower gas prices. we're hoping for the trend last week where prices kept going down. right now we're holding similar to last week. i did find them all under $4 in these cities. one of the best is diamond gas on story road in san jose. costco has the same price, $3.89 throughout many parts of the south bay. costco stands alone as the chain with the same price in hayward, a couple of costcos are at $3.89. the north bay, there's a single safeway below $4 at $3.85 on american canyon road, but the rest of that county prices are above $4. that's at least the report from gas buddy, which we thank you for chiming in there. out to the roadways, the golden gate bridge, slick roadways. that may be the case as folks hit the roads this morning. carpy is talking about we still have active weather and the sun hasn't had a chance to dry

things out. do use caution. i'm hearing about some vehicles hitting the center divide or going off the roadway. it seems like the situation when they lose traction, that's the type of crash we see. my note in general, the roadways are moving smoothly despite the crash. the altamont pass showing more traffic getting ready for the morning. happening in about 20 minutes, nominations are coming out for the golden globe awards. nbc did not television last year's event over claims of improprieties by the hollywood foreign press. this year following a major overhaul it's back on air. again, the nominations will be announced a little after 5:30 and we'll report as soon as we start hearing those nominations. the awards show itself airs on tuesday, january 10. and coming up on "today in the bay," it's all coming together. nuclear fusion. it seems scientists have it figured out.

the labs figured out how to get energy out of nuclear fusion. we've been able to fuse atoms for a long time using this device and nuclear bombs. we've never had net energy positive fusion. we can make energy using fusion but it takes more energy to run the process than the reactor makes. lawrence livermore announced it's figured out how to get energy out of that reactor more than it puts in. our reactors are fission reactors. they put them together the way the sun does. elon musk attacking fauci. fauci is praised for leading the fight against aids and covid. fauci giving his best medically trained opinion during the pandemic. musk, who fashions him seven a champion of free speech, says

it's still snowing but it also gave a big boost to some of our reservoirs. the lexington reservoir friday was at about 35.7% of capacity. that's pretty significant. just one storm and even looking at uvas reservoir 15 feet is a little smaller but now that puts it above what we were at friday's capacity at 18.2. now we're at 39.9% of capacity. finally we'll have a chance to let all of this soak in, temperatures in the low 40s and we're headed for the low 50s for today. it's going to be overall a really cool day only making it up to 55 in novato and then cold tonight with some freezing temperatures now that the cold air is coming in behind the storm system. it's going to be dry throughout the week. no more rain headed our way. we need a break. take a look at the heavy sierra snow weighing down the trees at

palisades. going to be honest, i don't have really current snowfall totals because things got so wild. we are looking at snowfall totals from over the weekend when it first started at 54 inches of snow. this is not the complete storm totals and most likely later on this morning we're going to get more of those snowfall totals coming in. this week pretty dry, even going into next week, maybe a light quoting of snow before we head to christmas. now we are just looking at a mix of sun and clouds and freezing temperatures during the next several mornings, even into the weekend and then our highs reach into the low to mid-50s and once again it's going to be partly cloudy for san francisco as well with highs in the low 50s. now, mike, a traffic alert? you warned us about the potential trees coming down.

a rock slide is reported here causing reportedly southbound 101 at the marin city exit. it's just past the exit but diverting all traffic on the marin city exit from southbound 101 coming down out of mill valley and cuts you off from the golden gate bridge. you'll use city streets but that is currently southbound 101's closure because of rocks, debris and a number of vehicles with flat tires with a rock slide. the rest of the bay shows a nice, smooth drive. cars going off the roadway. the latest crash just past the interchange. a little build out of the altamont. highway 84, that construction zone. you shift over those cones and barriers might be unfamiliar to some but it's causing slowing.

a giant leap forward for nasa and its plans to return humans to the moon. we're already here in our heels. this is after the return of the next generation of artemis spacecraft made it back. >> as "today's" tom costello reports, a picture perfect splashdown. >> reporter: what a spectacular return to earth it was for the "artemis" mission, the orion orbiting the moon, going into deep space and back around the moon and headed straight for earth. as you saw it came in beautifully splashing down off the mexican baja peninsula around 12:40 eastern time. importantly, when it hit the atmosphere it was traveling 25 times the speed of sound. nasa decided to have it skip

"today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab tracking the light powder on this weekend storm that left in parts of the bay area. kari hall is tracking what we can expect. it is a cold start. >> it was windy, it was chilly, it was also sunny and then it was pouring and this is the result of that, how much rain we measured all around the bay area with over 2 inches of rain in parts of the east bay. redwood city 2.3 and in san jose as well as napa nearing 2 inches of rain. over 6 inches of rain. this is where it is now clearing the bay area heading to the south and we're seeing the snow taper off for the sierra as

well. today we're in for sunshine but right now it's only 38 degrees in the north bay. it's cold now but gets even colder over the next few mornings. we'll be watching all of that. now let's turn to "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab reporting from palo alto. ginger, some parts of the bay area somalia snow. >> reporter: that's right, kari. we're making our way south. i've made my way south from san francisco, no rain but still the slick roads now that you've mentioned the storm has passed. relatively manageable temperatures, 43 degrees in palo alto but as you mentioned there was definitely a lot left behind by that storm. take a look at this video from loma prieto, you can see the roads and trees covered in snow. another shot not so far for those of you waking up in san jose from the lick observatory

at the top of mount hamilton shot around 3:00 this morning, just a couple hours ago. and the scenes we're most familiar with throughout the weekend the rain. this heavy rain taken in scotts valley around 9:30. and over the weekend the livermore hills also got its dusting of snow and the wet weather, all of that busy weather bringing down trees along highway 9 in saratoga. firefighters tweeted out this picture. and a swim meet in morgan hill interrupted when hail made its appearance. i used to be on the swim team in high school. that would have maybe thrown me off a bit there, swimming in the rain. but that rain, as kari mentioned, is expected to ease today. that's a tradeoff, we're expecting cold temperatures. we'll be chasing the dusting of snow the storm has left behind in the next hour.

laura and kris? >> pro mom tip, get your kids involved in indoor sports. see you in a bit. now let's turn to mike inouye tracking the road conditions for commuters this morning. >> a dodgeball situation. they're hoping to open one lane soon because the stackup happened way back in toward mill valley where kari's totals showed you over 4 inches of rain. rock slide reported here around the marin exit. cars are being forced off the roadway but look at the different patterns. it jams up here and again to the crash. what i think is happening folks know that bridgeway is only your good way to get back on 101 and into sausalito. folks are taking that as your option. bridgeway is not an expressway. it is a surface street that takes you along the coast and back to highway 101 that will take you through city streets.

people walking and jogging later because it's not actively raining right now so that will be a factor for those areas. the rest of the north bay still has light traffic flow santa rosa into mill valley and the rest of your commute just starting to build here for vallejo, highway 37, highway 4 and 242. we've had a series of crashes in the walnut creek area but all have stayed clear of the lanes of 680. there must be slicker conditions as folks are hitting the roadway. we continue to see reports in the area. the south bay has the build typical for here, 101 north of 680. back to you. 5:35 and happening now the announcement of this year's golden globe nominations. >> we are watching this from the newsroom live in hollywood where the nominations are being read right now. the show will be back on nbc this year after controversies last year left its future up in the air. we're going to bring some of the

nominations to you during our next hour. masks are back on at san jose state. starting december 19th they will be required everywhere on campus until covid cases start to drop again. the cdc's high tier on the community levels map based on rising cases including new admissions and the percentage of beds with patients who tested positive for covid. most of the bay area is in the medium tier including alameda which brought back masks last week in certain areas while other parts are still in the low level. happening today a south bay mother accused of throwing out-of-control parties for young teens is due back in court for a preliminary hearing. more than a year ago authorities arrested shannon o'connor in idaho. she previously lived in los gatos where police say she hosted alcohol-fueled parties for minors. she pleaded not guilty to child

endangerment and sexual battery. ever since her arrest she's been held without bail. as the storm continues to move throughout the state, heavy snow continues to fall in the sierra. take a look at this. a lot of fresh powder out there. you can see the snow stacking up on top of roofs, make out the houses there. this is near i-80. the road was closed for part of the day yesterday. they managed to clear it. it is back open but chains, you can understand, are required. >> the snow is up to the rooftop. >> and a lot of the resorts had to close yesterday so we don't even have any current snowfall totals. it stopped at about 54 inches and they had 160-mile-per-hour winds at palisades. that's what they were reporting as well as those gondolas rocking at heavenly. it was pretty crazy as we are now looking at those very heavy trees that are weighted by all of the snow as we take a look at palisades resort, a live camera

all lit up. yes, it is very heavy in terms of the snow and boreal mountain had 54 inches. sugar bowl 41. 44 at northstar. as people wake up, we'll get more snowfall totals. as far as temperatures, if we think it's cold here, it is 9 degrees at tahoe city as well as twin bridges, kirkwood starting out this morning at about 5 degrees so very cold behind this system and we're seeing it now push moving away from the bay area. colder tomorrow morning once the sky clears, but we're headed for low 50s for this afternoon. dublin reaching 53. 55 in martinez and 55 in novato. and it's going to be a cool day but we will also get some sunshine, so looking forward to a chance to dry out after all of that active weather, and i will continue to monitor that. mike, now you have a traffic alert in the north bay? we still have that traffic alert because southbound 101 -- we have a change. we still have the alert but the

lane, one lane, has been opened right here, southbound highway 101 at marin exit. be careful. there's a rock slide in the area. undoubtedly they will need to do more work. caltrans can't even get out there to do the proper work for a while. there will be a factor as folks are driving south out of marin city, mill valley and to the exit here. we showed you that folks are using the bridgeway as an alternate. the slowing sensors now. it's about 15 miles per hour as folks were driving through the city. that is not a great alternate for you. if they're starting to open up lanes, even one, southbound 101, it may be better to stick it out and wait, plan on the delay as you travel south down to the golden gate bridge around the rodeo exit coming through the north bay. the rest of the north bay will be slick in many spots but no major issues. there is flooding at lucky drive. 101 northbound is the direction and it's still open in all lanes. we have typical slowing. the build for 37.

metering lights should be on any second. a little bit of a build and some puddling and ponding north of the antioch bridge. no major closures but we've had a series of crashes through the area and, of course, tonight we're looking ahead. we talked about this several times and earlier this morning. the closure from 84 up to sunol boulevard just this stretch will be closed from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning. the project extends from 84 up, the closure overnight is only for this one section. folks traveling in through livermore can take 84 and back around or they can also go all the way over to 238 to castro valley y and take this longer drive out here but, again, you can get by it by looping around the area. you want to go slower where there are traffic signals. back to you. >> thanks, mike. celebrating christmas with the currys. ahead on "today in the bay," our one-on-one with steph and ayesha as they celebrate a decade of giving back to their community.

workers. iranians in the bay area vowed to keep speaking out over the injustice happening far away. >> this is a continuance. iranian people have reached a point of no return with this regime. there is no changing the narrative. we want regime change in iran. >> the unrest in iran, of course, stems from the death of a young woman held by the morality police because of how she was wearing her head dress. her human rights activist claim close to 500 people have been killed since the demonstrations began. president biden met virtually with ukrainian president zelenskyy over the weekend. scott mcgrew, a key week ahead for the allies in the fight against russia. >> there are two meetings. the meeting of the g7 to which ukraine is invited and the meeting of nato ministers this week. ukraine would love to be participate of that. biden met with zelenskyy via web link this week as did france's

president macron. biden reassured zelenskyy we will not negotiate with the russians independently. ukraine sets the rules for peace talks, not us. congress hasn't figured out how to fund the government. it has until friday. this will fund through the fiscal year that ends september of 2023. they can kick the can down the road with something temporary and they often do that. a bill that would clarify the vice president's role in certifying an election to try to avoid another january 6. the committee, as you know, is considering criminal referrals to the justice department but sunday on "meet the press" a former federal prosecutor said the justice department with its new special counsel is probably really far along towards prosecuting the attack's leaders. it won't need congress at all. >> to me it's symbolic.

thousands in the east bay. i love that they do it in a family, leading by example and then, you know -- look how big they are. >> just hands the gifts out or go -- >> from the three-point line? >> take your apple, kids. >> nice to see. the season of giving. >> a good thing they did it inside. >> yesterday was a mess. off and on rain, hail, high winds over the weekend and a lot of rain and this was a big storm that really overproduced compared to what some of the computer models said. now that it's moving on, we'll have a chance to dry out for today. it did give us a big boost to a lot of our reservoirs around the bay area because they were running so critically low taking a look at uvas reservoir was only at 18% of capacity. now it's up to 39.9% of capacity so a rise of about 15 feet and

then looking at lexington reservoir that had a rise of about 3 feet now at 39.6% of capacity today. as we take a look at a live view of san rafael, temperatures are cool but nothing compared to what we have ahead once this storm system moves away and the sky clears. today we're only going to reach into the low 50s for highs. mid-50s for parts of the north bay, san francisco reaching 55 degrees and 53 in fremont. and then looking at tonight a freeze warning will be going up for parts of the north bay. i do think we'll see freezing temperatures in a lot of our inland valleys, even down to the south county, the tri-valley and the next several days it's going to be dry but there will be at times more clouds moving in but the rain is going to miss us as we go throughout the week as well as the weekend. check out these temperatures. it's pretty much going to be the same every day, highs reach into the low to mid-50s.

morning temperatures near freezing so a lot of mornings we will have to bundle up and scrape frost off the windshield. we'll drop into the upper 30s in san francisco. mike, you've been watching that north bay traffic alert. that's right, the rock slide alert. the rest of the bay, everything south of marin looking great. so is the east bay. we'll zoom to the closure for southbound 101. still, again, a rock slide comes down just past the rodeo exit and so folks are forced off at the marin exit as you see the backup and closure marked on the map. you do seep the slowing starts and ends farther north. i believe, again, folks are getting here to the city streets and taking bridgeway through sausalito. it turns to alexander at the very end, speed sensors showing about 10 miles per hour now as you get back over to highway 101. there is a park and ride there. you might be able to get through
