kicking up some water. so much rain over the weekend. we'll start to see some sunshine as well, of course, after sunrise. it's getting colder in the north bay. santa rosa dropping down to 36 degrees right now. we can see the puddles that are still out there as we look outside in dublin. the low 50s for this afternoon. what's the update on that closure of highway 101? >> we do have that closure. watch for slicker roadways and the rain over the week undoubtedly played a part in this. now we're not hearing about any injuries, but we're seeing a lot of reports of damage to the cars in the area. southbound 101 is shut down the marin exit where folks are forced off the roadway and we're

seeing the backup formerlyier. down to alexander and back onto 101. again, another alternate but the speeds are coming down below 10 miles an hour that will slow you down. i heard they're hoping to get crews to open a couple of lanes. we're tracking this. back to you. >> thank you, mike. we're also tracking a house fire. new video in overnight. this happened in san jose about three hours ago near fleming avenue. the flames shooting through the rooftops. crews were on the scene for about two and a half hours. we are still working to learn the cause of the fire. some 25% of americans are testing positive for the flu. that's also leading to a new spike in hospitalization with admissions for the flu at their highest levels in a decade. the cdc reports 7,300 flu deaths so far this season and the cdc director this morning is urging everyone to get vaccinated ahead

argument from republican critics. good morning, drew. >> reporter: we are hearing from an official on the plane with brittney griner as she made her way back to the u.s. this was the scene inside the plane as brittney griner made her way from a russian penal colony back home to the u.s. finally on american soil griner posing with her wife and a government official who spent months on the team negotiating her release. >> she jumped on the plane and went right to saying hi to everyone, making a personal connection, shaking hands, saying thank you. i found someone who was absolutely wonderful, kind, generous, interesting and, above all, authentic. >> reporter: as family, be friends and supporters celebrate griner's return after nearly a year in russian captivity, there's concern over the deal that secured her freedom. griner was traded for viktor bout, a notorious russian arms dealer. >> we're glad she's home, but we have to recognize wide-eyed that right now as americans we have made it clear we're willing to do anything to bring a single

basketball again? >> reporter: so far we haven't heard yet whether she intends to play in the wnba season going on right now. the players association saying their focus is on her health and well-being, but they would love to have her back on the court. >> we'll see how it plays out. thank you, drew. happening tonight major changes for late night and early morning commuters who drive through sunol. a stretch of northbound 680 will be closed weekdays. closures will start from the 84 junction in sunol to the sunol boulevard exit in pleasanton monday through friday but late night, 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the closure is expected to continue through april. caltrans says this is necessary because they need to make that roadway smoother. it could cause local traffic but residents say they're happy to see the road improvements. >> it's been a mess for years. it's very loud, very bumpy. >> caltrans says signs will

guide drivers toward detours including local detours along sunol road and if you're going north from the south bay it's recommended you go 880 to 238 to 580. 6:07. sonoma county education leaders are canceling school today at montgomery elementary. that's because the school currently has no running water. the district is not indicating what led to that outage. well, in the wake. recent rain and cooler temperatures, cal fire is moving forward with lifting burn restrictions in the north bay. the agency is allowing burn permits to be issued in napa, solano and sonoma. cal fire warns that despite the recent wet weather california is still in year round fire season. this morning the rain is starting to move out after getting just walloped. it was wild. hail.

pop-up tents in the bushes. rains are hardly enough. it's looking better. >> it did help out the reservoirs so that temporarily gives us water. it was quite a bit. take a look at some of these numbers where we had about 2 inches of rainfall in calistoga and in napa it was nearly 2 inches, about the same in san jose and looking at concord an inch and a half. mt. tam getting about 4 inches of rain and 4 inches in the santa cruz mountains and boulder creek. over 6 inches and take a look at uvas canyon. over 8 inches of rain fell in morgan hill. some spots did get a real big soaking. now this storm is pushing to the south. it is clearing the bay area. eventually we'll see some sunshine for today and behind this some cold temperatures will be settling in for the next several mornings so we'll talk

more about that in a few minutes. mike, you my have to stop at the gas station, put more tire pressure in there. where can we find lower prices? we also thought we would check the prices. we think countywide one of the best places in the south bay would be diamond gas on story road in san jose. costco has the same price scattered throughout the county there. they stand alone as the cheapest price in that county. the chain has their best prices in hayward. and in napa county at the bottom there's a single safeway below $4. $3.85 american canyon road. the rest of the reports show prices above $4 throughout the county. to the roadways one big problem in the north bay, continued closure for southbound 101. i want to shout out the closure.

at almost 40% of capacity and about the same at the lexington reservoir that came up about 3 feet. a larger reservoir so it does take more water for those water levels to come up. take a look at our temperatures for today only reaching into the low to mid-50s this afternoon. san francisco hitting 55 degrees and 53 in dublin. and then tonight it's going to be very cold. a lot of us freezing for the north bay there will be a freeze warning but i do think a lot of our inland valleys will have freezing temperatures starting tomorrow morning and continuing throughout the week. our temperatures here nowhere compared to what they are seeing right now in palisades. look at how heavy the trees are. they're lit up with lights. we can tell a very heavy snowfall. and just waiting for the resorts to open up to get snowfall totals. these are the ones we got before a lot had to shut down with boreal mountain getting 54 inches of snow.

about 40-45 inches up at north star where they also had wind gusts up to 160 miles per hour. things are calming down now. dry throughout the week. we don't see rain coming our way possibly through christmas so a look at our seven-day forecast shows we're going to be cool as that rain winds down and look at those morning temperatures inland dropping to near freezing, even into the weekend. looking at san francisco dry with a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures even there will reach into the upper 30s. mike, you've been watching a rock slide. we've been tracking this for over an hour. first reported just after 4:30 but it became an issue southbound 101 just past the marin exit where folks are forced off the freeway. we see more slowing. for a while we saw all the traffic managed by folks getting off the traffic at bridgeway and going through city streets and

getting back on at alexander avenue. they reported a truck passed by the area through the closure and heading through the actual slide itself. all lanes are blocked. folks local will know that. take 101 south continuing on and get out of that backup. that's if you know the area. west 24 approaching 580 another crash in the middle of the freeway itself. the backups are already starting to form heading into the maze. 6:21. mission accomplished for nasa. call it one successful step in the return to the moon. how the artemis voyage is impacting the plan to send humans to the moon after half a

a giant leap formed for nasa and its plans to return humans to the moon after the return of the next generation artemis spacecraft. >> we're thinking it's so cool to be on the moon. as the "today" show's tom costello reports the orion capsule made a picture perfect

splashdown setting the stage for the next phase of this mission. >> reporter: good morning. what a spectacular return to earth it was for the "artemis" mission, the "orion" coming back in after a 25-day mission orbiting the moon, another 40,000 miles beyond the moon into deep space and then coming back around the moon and headed straight for earth and as you saw it came in beautifully supplying down off the mexican baja peninsula at 12:40 eastern time. when it hit the atmosphere it was traveling 25 times the speed of sound and nasa decided to have it skip across the atmosphere to slow it down, to bleed off some speed before then dipping back into its descent, and a perfect descent right exactly on the money. nobody onboard this mission. this was an uncrewed test flight to see how well it performs before humans do board the next

fire, apple tv and online. 6:30 right now on your monday morning. thank you for joining us, i'm laura garcia. >> i'm chris chmura. i'm kris sanchez. marcus washington is off. we had so much rain over the week as we talk about our rainfall totals we had that were pretty impressive for the santa cruz mountains as well as parts of the north bay. our hills measuring up to 8 inches of rain in the uvas canyon area and boulder creek over 6 inches. mostly about an inch and a half to over 2 inches for parts of the bay. it will be clearing out for us today but then cold air settling in behind that. if you are about to step out the door in fremont, you can leave the umbrella at home, pick up a nice, warm jacket, because we're in the 40s now and it doesn't warm up much more from here only reaching into the low 50s for

this afternoon. mike, you have that traffic alert in the north bay. everybody else take a look and you're doing just final for almost everywhere in the commute except the north bay, as kari called it. the rain totals, mill valley with over 4 inches of rain because as you get to the marin exit, folks still forced off the freeway because of a rock slide south of there. that is causing traffic to be stopped. we should have an update but folks are exiting the freeway and getting on bridgeway. for folks who are familiar spencer avenue comes across, goes under the freeway. there's a park and ride there. if you know where that is you can, i believe, access and continue down april cross the golden gate bridge. we should have an update on hopefully a couple of lanes opening. the crash did clear west 580 at

24. >> thank you, mike. new this morning take a look at your screen. novato police are searching for the driver of this car. they say it was involved in a hit-and-run that injured a 19-year-old woman. it happened near the entrance of the hamilton smart station parking lot. the victim is expected to fully recover. anyone with information should call novato police. a south bay mother accused of throwing out-of-control parties for young children is due back in court for a preliminary hearing. more than a year ago authorities arrested shannon o'connor in idaho. she previously lived in los gatos where they say she hosted alcohol-fueled parties for young teens. in october she pleaded not guilty to child endangerment and sexual battery. ever since she's been held without bail. masks are back on at san jose state. people who go to the student wellness center or spartan

pantry will need to wear a mask and starting december 19 will be required everywhere on campus until covid cases start to drop again. the cdc's highest tier on the map based on rising cases and impacts local hospitals including new admissions and percentage of beds with patients who tested positive for covid. most of the bay area is in the medium tier including alameda which brought back masks last week in certain areas while other parts of the bay area still are in the lowest levels. just in to our newsroom the golden globe nominations are now out and the show will be back on nbc this year after controversies last year left its future up in the air. here is a look at the nominees for best motion picture, drama. nominees for best musical or comedy include --

north bay rock slide? we still have 101 closed but caltrans update says 15 more minutes until they can reopen at least a couple of lanes. the speed sensors look like they may be improving. caltrans may have done quicker work than anticipated. looking at the backup out of mill valley and into the sausalito exits here. bridgeway was where folks were bailing out. alexander was jammed up and has been the last 45 minutes. a slide and then the closure after that. everything else is clear. in the east bay looking at traffic flowing more smoothly now that the crash at 24 has cleared around 580. we have a standard for richmond and out in toward some of that backup if you're heading south. you may be heading south to mill valley to the backup.

who need a little bit of help this holiday season. >> all thanks to a well-known celebrity family and his wife, steph and ayesha curry hosting christmas with the currys in oakland. the event organized by their eat learn play foundation had a lot of games, volunteers. they handed out gifts, books and meals with the manipulation of providing a meaningful and impact ful experience. >> it takes a village to raise a family and a child. for eat learn play to be that for families that may not have that is just great. >> it is really great. this year marks ten years. they have given food, gifts and books to thousands in the east bay. >> so nice to see and very nice to see they did it indoors. it was wild, kari. >> one minute it was raining and then it was sunny and then hail and windy.

>> sunglasses and then hail. >> today, now that it's clearing out, you'll see a little bit of snow on our bay area peaks. that will be a nice treat especially with the sun shining on it. that storm system is moving out of here and, yeah, we've had enough. that was a pretty good soaker and it really helped give a boost to our reservoirs. on friday uvas was at 8% of capacity. it had a rise of 15 feet bringing it up to about 39.9% of capacity. on friday lexington was at 35%. now at 39%. that came up three feet and it was definitely a big soaker from 4 to 8. it's in the mid-40s in san francisco. we'll have a cold start but look at the sunshine that will be right overhead at about going into the afternoon.

it will be a beautiful sunny day but only reaching into the low to mid-50s this afternoon. tonight the cold air settles in behind this system and we'll have freeze warnings in effect for parts of the north bay. i do think we're going to see some widespread freezing and frosty conditions for the east bay and the south bay. this morning tahoe waking up to single digit temperatures and a lot of heavy snow. trees are leaning, they're very weighty because of the snow that fell. some of the weekend snowfall totals that were up to 54 inches. so that was once again a significant storm that gave a boost to the sierra snowpack. there is nothing else coming our way for quite a while possibly through christmas with only a light coating of snow over the

next week to week and a half. as we take a look at our seven-day forecast, yes, we'll be drying out. the calmer winds settling in, too. as we see the weather calming down temperatures will drop near freezing for not only tomorrow morning but the next several mornings. san francisco could reach into the upper 30s with highs in the mid-50s. mike, you are still tracking that alert. hope flip there's better news. right on the horizon better news, not just this second, the lanes are still marked block. southbound 101 is slowing as folks are getting on through surface streets. hang on, folks. it should be just a couple minutes until we see good traffic flowing. the rock slide is what caused that closure. marin exit is where folks were forced off the freeway again. the lanes should be opening any second right now.

sausalito, marin drive exit. it was a landslide or a small rock slide that prompted all lanes of the 101 south to be closed. you are taking a look at video as it was literally just being cleared and cleaned up. the cleanup was finished minutes ago. the freeway was first closed around 5:00 a.m. and it took about an hour or so for the whole process to be finished. now there is a steady traffic flow on the 101 southbound. this is just one of the consequences of the weather may have been one of the consequences of the weather that we've seen this week. you are now taking a look at other things that happened because of the busy weather. loma prieta way, you can see the roads and trees covered in snow. snow also seen not too far from those waking up in san jose. this from the lick observatory at the top of mount hamilton

shot around 3:00 this morning and the scenes, of course, most of us are familiar with throughout the weekend, the rain. this heavy rain taken in scotts valley around 9:30 last night over by mount hernon road. the hills got a dusting of snow taken along san antonio valley road last night. the wet weather brought down trees along highway 9 in saratoga. firefighters tweeting out this picture. and a swim meet in morgan hill was interrupted when hail made a surprise appearance. you can imagine that would have taken the students and the swimmers by surprise there. back to this rock slide, i know kari has been mentioning it all morning, rain is expected to stop. the storm has passed but in exchange very cold temperatures. we're experiencing that now along with, as you can see, free flowing traffic on the 101 southbound into san francisco.

we're live in sausalito. ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> thank you, ginger. in the meantime, all that moisture out there, too, hopefully will get a chance to soak in a little bit. >> we have a lot of dry weather the next several days. as we look at our forecast it will be cold but much more sun than we've seen recently and that continues into the weekend. >> good. my dog needs to go outside. >> so does mine. both of them. where you can go through the area, 101 just reopened from the earlier rock slide. what that means for your commute first of all less buildup out of mill valley, relief. more traffic heading south to the golden gate bridge. a live look showed it almost empty and now more traffic driving through this area that is slick. do be careful there. more traffic through the east bay with slicker roadways, the sun coming up. folks may try to go faster. the roads are not dry yet. >> exactly. a lot of puddling and ponding. the dog is going out.
