7:11 am
>> yeah. thank you very much. let's bring in cnbc's andrew ross sorokin. andrew urks let's just start right there with the timing of this arrest on the eve of the testimony before congress, the chairwoman of that committee while happy to see the prosecution going forward made no secret of her displeasure that now his testimony will not be under oath before congress. what is with the timing here? >> hard to understand. a lot of people thought he was going to be walking into a trap of sorts because he would be testifying under oath and there could be additional charges potentially of defrauding the world if, in fact, he were to have lied under oath. i think it looks like somebody inside has flipped. somebody close to him. there has been a lot of speculation about a number of people in and around ftx and in and around bankman-fried and whether they were able to do that. if you look through the s.e.c. complaint this morning, you can see significant details about what actually happened inside,
7:12 am
details that would have been unavailable to law enforcement prior. so perhaps that is what may have happened in this case. >> often it takes months and months, if not years, as you know, to build a white collar criminal case. many, as you said, are speculating perhaps someone on the inside has flipped, turned against him and is guiding prosecutors here. bankman-fried to you and to the many other interviews he has done subsequently has consistently said i don't -- i didn't know there was co-mingling of funds between ftx, the crypto exchange, and his hedge fund. that seems to be the linchpin of the government's case and the s.e.c. at least is saying there was deception here. so it suggests the government has this evidence. >> it very much appears that way. in fact, there is a specific detail in the s.e.c. complaint this morning that seems to suggest that he understood very much so that there was $8 billion that was in his hedge fund that had been moved to
7:13 am
another account at one point. in fact, they were going to start charging interest on and he started moving that money again to another account. so when you start to piece those pieces together and think about criminal intent, that he intended to do this, is that kind of evidence that prosecutors are going to use to try to build their case. >> finally, i mean, what about the investors? some of them not rich people who poured their money into this and trusted in this. is there anything about these indictments, the civil case by the s.e.c. that makes recouping those losses any more likely? >> i am afraid to say that piece of it i think is going to be the most difficult component of this. the idea of getting that money back is going to be a long and arduous process. there is going to be some money. for those who invested ftx.us, there may be a better chance getting some of that money back. we heard from so many people who used this service, some of whom say they lost their life savings.
7:14 am
>> all right. andrew ross sorokin, thank you very much. we turn now to the overall state of the economy. stocks rallied yesterday to start a busy week of news. it's been closely watched with key new inflation data coming out today and the start of the federal reserve's last meeting of the year. nbc's tom costello joins us from north charleston, south carolina. good morning. >> reporter: we are at a boeing production center this morning in south carolina and they got a very big order. united airlines firm order for 100 wide-body planes. it solidifies jobs here in south carolina and across the boeing supply chain. we've got good news on the economy this morning with that inflation number. that just came out at 8:30 eastern time. inflation in november running at 7.1%. better than expected.
7:15 am
many economists expected a reading of 7.3%, evidence that inflation is coming down. that's critical because we know that the federal reserve meets today and expected to hike rates tomorrow but maybe now it can have justification to not hiking as much over the next months into the future. of course americans have been seeing inflation every day doing the christmas shopping, at the grocery store. they see signs that inflation is tanking as they pump the gas because gas right now running at $3.25 a gallon. that's down 50 cents in a month. down a nickel from a year ago. a big, dramatic drop in gas prices as the global economy slows but so far no indication that the u.s. economy is slowing. unemployment at a 50-year low right now despite the fact that the fed has been hiking interest rates to tame inflation.
7:16 am
we have had six rate hikes this year. instead of a three-quarter point hike we expect a half-point rate hike especially given the data of inflation showing a better than expected number. inflation was hotter than that in november and moderating ever so slightly and now speculation that in fact the fed may be able to engineer the soft landing, hiking rates without pushing the economy into a full-blown recession. back to you. >> tom costello from south carolina, thank you. much more to get to, including the tripledemic led by the worst flu outbreak in a decade it is creating a lot of problems for people and businesses, hospitals and schools from coast to coast. nbc's stephanie gosk is on the story for us today. good morning. >> good morning. you know, it's been months now that these three viruses have been bearing down on the country. the effect is being felt across the healthcare system. demand for medications leading to empty store shelves.
7:17 am
doctors' offices are packed. in some places, hospitals are bursting at the seams. >> reporter: at harbor ucla medical center, the season's tripledemic is taking a toll on patients and staff. >> we are having significant numbers of people in the waiting room for much longer than we are accustomed to because so many e.r. nurses are out. >> reporter: are you seeing an increase in patients coming in with one of these three viruses? >> yes. certainly in our urgent care and emergency room. >> reporter: the story is similar in the south. mississippi has 65 icu beds in the entire state as of thursday. hospitals are looking to other states for help. but tennessee and alabama are maxed out, too. while rsv cases are dropping pediatric cases of covid are up 50%. and the flu is surging. like in new york city where masks are back out and being worn on streets and subways.
7:18 am
>> going to keep my mask on. that's it. i am not trying to get sick. >> reporter: the city's flu numbers over the holidays set records. >> thanksgiving data showed we had more cases at that thanksgiving on november 26th than we have ever had in last 12 years. >> reporter: in pharmacies the shelves can't stay stocked even though manufacturers say production hasn't changed. in especially short supply, pediatric pain and fever medication. >> they're not having a problem with manufacturing so the shortage is driven by demand. >> reporter: the message to concerned parents is don't panic. there is no need to stockpile. >> if you don't need the supply, don't go out and buy it. >> reporter: with two weeks until christmas, the cdc says it's not too late to get that flu shot. >> we need about two weeks for that protection to kick in. so now is the time right now to get that flu shot and covid vaccine so you are protected for the christmas holidays. >> so we looked into the numbers for flu vaccinations and we don't have any numbers for
7:19 am
adults. we know that children under the age of 17, 42% of children have gotten the flu vaccine. when it comes to the covid booster the numbers dropped significantly for people over the age of 5. just over 13% of people have gotten that targeted bivalent booster that's available. >> all right. stephanie, thank you. >> you are welcome. all right. back to the weather now. dylan is standing by in for al once again. we have the blizzard conditions. what else? >> we have the chance of some severe storms. that will be on the southern side of this system through eastern oklahoma, arkansas, parts of texas, too. we could see damaging winds, large hail, even some tornados are possible. this is slowly going to move to the east the next several days. the biggest concern for traveling will be the blizzard-like conditions across the dakotas, that will move into the upper midwest into tomorrow. that's a look at the weather across the country.. we wilill get to y your local l forecast in the next 30 seconds. . ext 30 seconds
