warnings and frost advisories that even go to the coastline and includes san francisco this morning as we deal with those temperatures that are starting out in the 30s. we're at 32 in palo alto and 32 in napa. it's below freezing in sonoma as well as santa rosa. 31 in dublin and below freezing in san martin. even in other areas where we're at 37 or below, you're having to scrape frost off the windshield before you get going and we've seen some fog moving around the north bay, novato right now visibility down to zero. when you have fog and near freezing temperatures that can deposit some ice on some of those emstraighted roadways and may make it slick for your marng drive. it is looking good, though, in dublin. we've seen fog the past several mornings. right now it is clear and we'll be near freezing the next couple of hours. mike, you're watching the impact on the roads. that's right, kari. we had ice in san jose. i believe it was probably a puddle or a leaky sprinkler that froze. it was cold enough to do that.

that's cleared from 101. this part of 101 has been issued, a special traffic alert by chp northbound. really starting to stack up. the exit as well blocked by the crews, perhaps a hazmat situation with a diesel spill. they'll take capital expressway. there's a deadly crash investigation. this happened about 2:00 in the morning. that's still going on just shy of center around seven trees boulevard. up to tulles or monterey up towards the city because things are light for the south bay. the rest of the bay shows a nice, smooth drive. some of the fog with potential for ice as well because of the temperatures in the north bay. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 5:02 right now. the man accused in the violent attack of house speaker nancy pelosi six weeks ago returns to court today, and it's possible the court will hear the most detailed account yet what happened. >> today's hearing happened in superior court as one of two cases playing out against that suspect. conejero saab live for us. talk to us about this, what is supposed to take place today? >> reporter: as you mentioned, marcus, since the first few days after the attack this may be the most anticipated day in court so far. today is the first day of mr. depape's preliminary hearing. it's also the first day that we'll be hearing in detail of the case against him. this is what we've known so far. there are two cases against him, one at the federal level and one at the point state level. the preliminary hearing has to do with the state case against him. some of the charges that he is facing attempted murder, elder abuse and first degree residential burglary, also threatening family members of a public official, mr. depape will be in court today. he has been in court on several occasions before and so has speaker nancy pelosi and paul pelosi's daughter christine seemingly to observe. she has not spoken to the media. the d.a.'s office has also not

disclosed the evidence and/or any witnesses prior to today's preliminary hearing. more than a week ago paul pelosi made his first public appearance alongside his wife in washington, d.c., at the annual kennedy center honors and even more recently their youngest daughter alexandra pelosi gave an interview on cbs news about an upcoming documentary that is set to air. she describes her experience so far since her father's attack, she says i have not slept since the night of his attack. today's preliminary hearing is set to start at 9:00 a.m. it's expected to go more than several hours and we'll be bringing you updates online and as well as our later newscasts. we're live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> we'll be watching to see what comes out of that hearing today. ginger, thank you. it is 5:04. new video released in san bruno captures a recent shoot-out that left a man hospitalized. a surveillance camera captured

the shoot-out november 26. police quickly responded and officers soon stopped the car they say was speeding from the scene with the injured victim inside. police also say a follow-up raid netted the shooting suspect, all believed to be oakland gang members. ten years later survivors of the sandy hook elementary school rampage are talking about that event that changed their lives forever. today marks the day 20 first graders and 6 adults were killed. we are talking about how a teacher saved lives. two girls are juniors in high school and say they vividly remember how they survived after their teacher crammed them and 14 others into a bathroom in the back of the classroom. >> do you remember anything she said, julia? >> one thing she said she loved us going back, thinking about

it, that was the first thing i would think about. >> you can watch the full interview later this morning on the "today" show at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." a decision on interest rates just hours away. now we'll likely set the course for the u.s. economy as a new year begins. >> brie jackson joins us live and, brie, thanks to encouraging news this week, it's possible a lower rate hike may be in the cards. >> reporter: good morning, marcus, laura. after four straight three-quarter interest rate hikes, the federal reserve is expected to announce a smaller increase of about half a percentage point. this comes as a report released tuesday shows consumer prices at 7.1% in november down from 7.7% in october. the decrease is driven in part by a drop in gas prices down more than $1.77 nationwide since june. while economists say this is a

positive sign, consumers we spoke with remain cautious. >> it's encouraging the numbers are going directionally down but we're still far from where we need to be. >> i feel every time we make a purchase we put in so much more thought, where are we getting our gas? where are we getting our groceries? >> reporter: now despite the smaller increase, economists say fed chairman jerome powell is expected to take a more aggressive tone when he makes that expected announcement today indicating the battle with inflation is far from over. this in an effort to impress on markets that the central bank is not ready to give up its stance on rate hikes. powell is expected to speak with reporters around 11:30 this morning and we surely will be watching. in washington, i'm brie jackson for "today in the bay." >> watching we will be doing. brie, thank you. 5:07. let's take a live look outside. look at frosted window panes and windshields because it's very, very cold out there.

this is a live look at the frost. you can see this is in palo alto, stanford university. kari has a look at our forecast. it is a cold start to the morning. it's time to get out those credit cards and not for a purchase but to scrape the frost off the windshield and make sure you are dressing in layers and wearing a hat if you have to be outside for a long period of time, even just walking to work or school. keep the pets inside in this kind of weather, we'll see more of these mornings ahead and also make sure you are protecting the plants. if you do cover them during the overnight hours you have to take the plastic off throughout the day and put it back on at night and also if you have any exposed pipes that do have water in it, make sure you are keeping those wrapped or the water trickling there and an eye on your tire pressure. we've had a lot of these mornings and we'll see more

ahead. make sure you are taking all of those extra precautions each and every morning. mike, stopping at the gas station, where might people tend to want to go? kari, we're gas buddy famous. san pablo, contra costa county leads the gas buddy report. the cheapest listed in the state i think, as far as i read that chart, great gas at $3.29 and that's the best gas buddy sources are reporting. santa clara county a lot higher. the best we could find in the south bay would be $3.84 on story road in san jose. a few other options. exxon is one of the few beating the $4 mark. at the roadways looking at green sensors except for in the south bay. i will run over to my map which seems to be frozen and will tap this computer because we still have this traffic alert going on as folks are traveling down into san jose. northbound 101 we have a lot of

>> that's a lot cheaper. >> in this economy, here you go. >> hello. >> i like it, too. the cold temperatures keep the smell down. >> okay. >> no sweating much. >> or it freezes and falls off. great. let's move on. a live look outside in san francisco. we are under a microclimate weather alert and the sky is all clear as you may have a view of the meteor shower that's going on this morning. the geminids will be peaking this morning. peaked yesterday morning and it's a good time to watch right now all the way up through sunrise. you don't need to take your let your eyes adjust. there could be as much as 150 per hour with our 70% moon but you do have to wear extra layers and also bundle up. it is so cold out there. and we do have the frost advisories in effect for the inner bay and the coast and the freeze warnings for the interior

valleys as we are going to see those temperatures in many spots dipping near freezing and we are already seeing that right now so we're feeling the same kind of weather we've had throughout the past several days. also with the patchy dense fog developing especially in the north bay there may be icy spots on the elevated bridges and roadways. now we've been talking about how cold it's been. i'm showing you the month of november where in blue we had below cooler than normal temperatures. we had that throughout much of the month, only a few days around thanksgiving did we have some near normal or above normal temperatures, and so far we've had a lot of cooler than normal temperatures in san francisco. in fact, it's about two and a half degrees below normal with an average temperature, get this, of 50.6 degrees. very cold, even this morning we're starting out in the upper 30s and will see the same thing again tomorrow and low 30s for the inland valleys. there will be more cold mornings extending into next week.

it may be eventually rain by next tuesday and then again on thursday. i know those are big travel days ahead of christmas. we'll continue to watch these storms as our pattern changes. if you're going to the midwest, some very frigid air is about to head that way. and we're talking about the first major polar vortex of the season right in time for christmas. so it's going to be super cold in those areas and, of course, we'll be watching it, too, with storms rolling onshore. as far as the near term, much more quiet. we do see a lot of sunshine. temperatures in the low 50s but more freezing mornings ahead. and, mike, you're seeing still that continued alert for silicon valley. >> silicon valley still light traffic. 101 we know often has the first slowing and now it's an unusual spot because of the crash and hazard and this does affect the other investigation your alternate. north 101 now jamming up before we get to blossom hill. two lanes are blocked by a hazmat.

impact those without shelter are having. >> let's start out with meteorologist kari hall and how cold it's dipping into temperatures. we're starting out freezing in a lot of spots and are under freeze warning for areas shaded in purple and are seeing frost advisories for much of the rest of the bay area that can damage a lot of those sensitive plants in these temperatures. temperatures no different from the last month or so. 31 in sonoma and santa rosa and also with the fog we've also seen the potential of some icy roadways on those elevated bridges and overpasses in novato. visibility down to a mile although it is clear elsewhere. as we check out santa rosa right now, 31 degrees and there's a light wind. we will see those temperatures below freezing for at least the next couple of hours before it slowly warms up. now let's turn to "today in the

bay's" kris sanchez in san jose and, kris, this cold is not just an inconvenience but could be dangerous. >> reporter: right. if you happen to pass by one of those old school bank signs that shows the temperature, you will find it pretty shocking if you are not already shocked as soon as you open the door. 38 degrees is the temperature where we are standing right now. did have to scrape a little bit of frost off my windshield as i was leaving my house this morning as well and weep know that the temperatures are going to be this cold for a while and that is dangerous for people who are living unhoused. we know that unhoused outreach folks have been going and delivering supplies to people who don't want to go into a shelter but at this point we know that two people did die somewhere in the downtown area. that zip code there in yellow is where they were found. the medical examiner is not really seeing any specifics on the details of how or when they were found. according to "the mercury news" saying they wanted to protect their privacy and notify their families.

california families are paying about $900 to stay warm at home according to the national energy assistance director's association, about 17% more than last year. the prices today are the highest they've seen in 15 years. just yesterday we reported new inflation numbers showing a bit of relief, but it's not going to happen in time to keep the house warm through this cold snap. >> a bit crazy especially having a dog. i feel i have to keep her warmer than me. the costs are a little bit nuts. >> it's kind of tragic. >> reporter: so there are assistance programs if you can't afford to pay your power bill. we know that applications for assistance have gone up 10% to 20%, but you should still try if you need help and, remember, if you are trying to heat your house or if you know someone who is trying to stay warm in an enclosed space, propane, charcoal never a good idea.

that can be toxic and could cost you your life. make sure you try to just layer up this morning. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." good morning, kris. there's a lot going on this morning. kari talked about novato with a lot of fog and the possibility of the smaller bridges in the napa area as well. they're charming to look at but the potential for black ice on the roadways as that fog might freeze. this zip code right here just north we had reports of ice on the roadway. i think it was a sprinkler that might have been leaking and froze on the roadway. that ice has cleared. two alerts for the south bay. a deadly crash, the 62nd traffic crash, deadly crash heren jose this year. we've had more this year than we had all of last year and this is on capital expressway at seven trees. our photographer went out and

murder of his wife lacy and their unborn son. right now a decision is in limbo that judge is believed to be weighing legal issues the some kind recently targeted this had friday as the deadline for issuing an order but even if that is up in the air. the judge may set a new trial date or stick to friday deadline or even announce a date as far out as december 23rd. peterson will not attend that hearing in person. how bad is the surge and what do we all need to know? joining us now is infectious disease expert dr. peter chin-hong. thank you for joining us. are bay area hospitals seeing an increase in patients right now? >> yes, definitely. we're not only talking about covid here, laura, but about influenza, rsv, both in older

people as well as in younger folks. the three things are driving hospitalizations right now. occupancy rate is about 95% in both pediatric and in adults. >> are you finding people's immune systems are down? now it feels like there's this tripledemic going on. are we having a tough time recovering as well? >> they are not any less agile or effective. i think what has happened is we haven't been exposed to as many viruses in the last two, three years. it means the population immunity isn't there. we may have an easier time because, again, the immune system hasn't gone to sleep. it's working as it normally does when it sees something and responds to it. >> speaking of the immune system, concerns that the most recent covid booster shot doesn't protect against all

subvariants. i was reading the latest is the most immune evasive one yet. >> we have ones that have a little bit more immunity. we're thinking not only ba.5 but bq.1 and bq.1.1 and now xbb. not the vaccine won't work but probably it will work for maximal protection three months, six months. no matter how you slice and dice it, you will have very long protection against serious infections even if you might get a mile cold because these boosters may not prevent all from being prevented.

temperatures. right now 37 degrees. it's going to linger here for the next couple of hours and then slowly we start to see the warm-up happening. keeping the jackets on all throughout the day. we're back in the 30s tonight. and we're still following this traffic alert for north 101 coming through san jose. we do have this issue stacking up the traffic. right now only half the freeway northbound 101. only two lanes are open for a cleanup, debris, some fuel, some relief for the south bay as the commute builds. i see a shift coming up. we'll talk you through it. new overnight, a north bay family will need temporary housing. this is after a fire ripped through their home. it happened on quail hollow drive in santa rosa. everyone made it out safely. firefighters say it started with an explosion in the garage. the flames caused extensive damage to the home's second floor. a young woman many call a hero receives a top honor from the city where she stepped up to

defend a mentally disabled person. she lost vision in one of her eyes as a result. last night the mayor of antioch presented 19-year-old bianca palomera with a key to the city following a violent attack after she tried to defend someone being harassed by another customer at the habit restaurant where she works. she says she would not hesitate to do the same thing again. >> i don't feel like that much of a hero. i feel i did something normal. we all have to take care of each other. especially the people who can't defend themselves. >> authorities have arrested the suspect, isaac white carter of hayward. president biden signs respect for marriage act. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. the president is hoping for more bills to cross his desk. >> ideally. time is running out. strengthening election law, keep the government open, a lot to do

in the few days left before congress goes home for the holidays. some of those who go home are not coming back. there's a new congress ahead. president biden signing the bill. congress stepped in after some feared the supreme court might reverse itself and make one or both things illegal again. here is the president. >> we're here today to celebrate their courage and everyone who made the day possible. courage that led to progress. we've seen progress that gives us hope that every generation will continue in our journey for a more perfect union. it looks like we have full agreement between the house and senate between republicans and democrats on an omnibus bill that would fund the government, send money and arms to ukraine and fix a problem with the electoral system. they may have to do temporary funding to buy themselves time and details are sparse but it sounds like good news.

the senate will take up an investigation into the ftx and cryptocurrency today. yesterday was the house's turn. they interviewed the current head of ftx trying to unwind the mess. the founder of ftx, sam bankman-fried, is in custody in the bahamas charged in the u.s. with fraud including campaign finance fraud. it would appear based on early allegations fbs, as he's known, used customer money to donate to politicians. in some cases using strawman contributions. they're still trying to unwind the information. we knew ftx was a big contributor to the democrats but now it appears money went to both parties. a report the u.s. is ready to send ukraine our most powerful anti-missile system, the patriot. this could be a game changer, one of our most advanced weapons

us here on "today in the bay." >> so glad he's okay. 5:50 right now. everybody talking about the chill in the air. we're turning to the forecast. that freeze warning in effect. kari, you're also tracking severe weather in other parts of the country. the storm that was here over the weekend is moving through other parts of the country and dozens are hurt after a tornado. nearly 25 people were injured. some of them critically and the tornado ripped through a trailer park flattening a number of homes. you can see all of the damage there and there were reports of trees and power lines knocked over. meanwhile, new video on the strong winter storm bearing down on wyoming. you can barely see anything. look at the wind and snow. it is significantly reducing visibility on the roadways and officials are warning people to not travel and only travel for emergencies only. they say there are some power outages possible.

the force of high wind as well as that heavy wind-driven snow. that storm continues to move to the east expecting to hit parts of the east coast for tomorrow and they're going to be talking a lot about that. we'll be keeping an eye on national news as well. while we're seeing chilly temperatures only headed for the mid-50s for today after such a very cold start with frosty conditions. and if you think it's been so cold lately, well, we're taking a look at the calendar. each day where it was below normal we marked it in blue. where it was a day that was about normal, that's in green. above normal is in orange. only the week of thanksgiving in november did we have some above normal temperatures, and so far this month in san francisco it's also running well below normal for a lot of days with an average temperature of only 50.6 degrees so very chilly and next week a big blast of cold air is

heading in most likely the first major polar vortex of the season. that's going to be moving through. and if you'll be traveling just a heads-up that may be impacting your travel plans. we are also going to start to see more storms rolling onshore starting next tuesday and then again next thursday, possibly friday. so just a heads-up if you are going to be traveling ahead of the holidays that there may be issues and you want to make sure you're flexible with the travel plans. it looks good for now, even through the weekend. it's cold and mornings start out with highs in the low 50s. mike, you still have delays from the traffic alert? we do. this is the traffic alert we've been tracking, north 101 at hellier only two lanes are open. many might take monterey and cut over to get back north of that but this investigation for a deadly crash continues to block that intersection at seven

welcome back to "today in the bay," a new warning in hawaii to holiday travelers about a surge in shark activity. the latest attack sent a man to the hospital with serious injuries. it happened early in the waters off honolulu. police say a 12-foot tiger shark bit the man in his lower left torso but he managed to fend it off with a diving knife. nearby paddle boarders pulled him from the water and got him to safety. this is hawaii's second reported shark attack in recent days.

last week in maui a woman bit by a shark while snorkeling with her husband disappeared and rescuers never found her. a historic move new zealand has become the first country anywhere to ban tobacco sales to all future generations. the idea is to slowly phase out smoking by imposing a lifetime ban for young people. now the law states that tobacco cannot be sold to anyone born on or after january 1, 2009. so the minimum age for buying cigarettes will evolve. and in theory 50 years from now cigarettes will only be legal for people over the age of 63 although health leaders hope smoking will be a nonfactor. new zealand wants to be smoke free by the year 2025. interesting. right now at 6:00, a man accused in the attack of nancy pelosi's home of her husband is back in court. new information expected to be revealed including previous unseen evidence. >> we're awaiting word on
