interest rates. live in washingngton with a loo at how the looming decision from the fed may signal the direction of the economy and whether the worst is behind us. also, much of the bay area waking up to a freeze warning and frost advisory. meteorologist kari hall is tracking some chilly overnight temperatures. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. a good wednesday morning. thank you for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. so much to get to including a look at that very busy commute out there. first, kari, another freezing cold start to our day. it's been very cold and does continue again this morning and the next several mornings as well. we do see the freeze warning in effect for these areas in purple and the light blue is where we have frost advisory which now includes the coastline, the inner bay as well as san francisco. so that may mean you have to allow some extra time to get that frost off the windshield

before you get driving this morning and we're below freezing in palo alto as well as dublin and scotts valley and san martin it's 32. we're seeing temperatures just above freezing in livermore and napa we're below freezing. as far as temperatures today we're back to where we were yesterday with some mid-50s and sunshine and we'll see this weather pat ernl on repeat. eventually we'll get some rain. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you've been tracking an alert. we have an alert issued by b.a.r.t. they may have ten-minute delays that happens when they talk about slowing for the rain but this morning they called out icy conditions. frost on the tracks. those elevated and in conditions we watch the smaller roadways and bridges as well. this is related to a diesel spill and concrete on the roadway, there is an investigation that continues on capital expressway.

that is blocking one of your routes. more folks are heading north on 87. back to you. 6:01 right now. the man accused in the violent attack at the home of house speaker nancy pelosi six weeks ago returns to corporate today. it's possible the court will hear the most detailed account yet what happened. >> it happens in superior court as part of one of two cases playing out against that suspect. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab live in san francisco and, ginger, what's supposed to take place today? >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. since the first few days after paul pelosi's attack this morning may be the most anticipated day in court so far. today is the first day of his preliminary hearing. i'm speaking of the accused mr. david depape. today will be the first time we'll be hearing in detail the case against him. here is what we've known so far. mr. depape is facing two cases

concurrently, one at the point federal level and one at the state level. the preliminary hearing deals with the one at the state level. he is facing multiple charges including attempted murder and mr. depape is expected in court today. he's been in court on several occasions before. so has speaker nancy pelosi and paul pelosi's daughter christine seemingly to observe. she has not spoken to the media in the past. now the d.a.'s office has also not disclosed the evidence or any witnesses prior to today's preliminary hearing. more than a week ago paul pelosi made his first public appearance alongside his wife, house speaker nancy pelosi, in washington, d.c., at the annual kennedy center honors. even more recently the couple's youngest daughter gave an interview about an upcoming documentary on her mother. she spoke of her father's attack on cbs news saying that since that attack she has not slept since that night. now today's preliminary hearing is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.,

expected to run several hours long. we will be giving you updates online and on air on our midday newscast, our online updates on nbcbayarea.com. >> ginger, thank you. 6:04, dramatic new video captures a recent shoot-out that left a man hospitalized. a surveillance camera captured the shoot-out near camino plaza. police quickly responded and officers soon stopped the car they say was speeding from the scene with the injured victim inside. a follow-up raid last week netted the shooting suspects, all of whom are believed to be oakland gang members. ten years later survivors of the sandy hook elementary school shooting rampage are talking about that event that forever changed their lives. today marking the day 20 first graders and 6 adults were killed. among those survivors a teacher and two of her former students who are talking about how that

teacher saved their lives, both girls are now juniors in high school. and they both say they vividly remember how they survived. this is after their teacher crammed 16 of those students into a tiny bathroom in the back of the classroom. >> do you remember anything she said, julia? >> one thing that she said is she loved us. going back and thinking about it, that was the first thing i would think about. >> now you can see that full interview later this morning on the "today" show. that's at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." a key decision on interest rates hours away now will likely set the court for the u.s. economy as the new year begins. brie jackson joins us live in washington this morning and, brie, thanks to some encouraging news this week, it is possible, slightly possible, the lower rate hike may be in the cards here. >> reporter: after four straight three-quarter point rate hikes, they are expected to announce a smaller increase of about half a

percentage point. this comes as a report released tuesday shows consumer prices at 7.1% in november, that's down from 7.7% in october. the decrease is driven in part by a drop in gas prices down more than $1.77 nationwide since june. economists say this is a positive sign consumers we spoke with remain cautious. >> it's encouraging the numbers are going directionally down, but we're still very far from where we need to be. >> i feel every time we make a purchase we put in so much more thought, where are we getting our gas, where are we getting our groceries? >> reporter: despite the smaller increase, jerome powell is expected to take a more aggressive tone when he makes that expected announcement today indicating that the battle with inflation is far from over. this in an effort to impress on markets the central bank is not ready to give up its stance on rate hikes. powell is expected to speak to reporters around 11:30 this morning and we certainly will be

watching. in washington, i'm brie jackson. >> hopeful news but people still feeling the pinch. thanks, brie. let's take a live look this morning. frosty conditions. look at the frost on that windshield. this is parked at stanford. of course a lot of people are waking up with this on their stroets as they get ready for the day. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring the frees warnings. it is cold out there. it is. we're talking about getting out the credit cards. you don't have to worry about the interest rates. you need to scrape it off the windshield, all of that frost before you get going. the low clouds also moving through parts of the north bay where visibility is down to about a quarter of a mile around novato. elsewhere it's been fairly clear. you may run into a couple of patches and you want to make sure you are dressing in layers and wearing a hat if you will be outside. keep those pets inside with this

kind of weather and make sure you keep covering those plants especially as we go through the next several mornings. take the plastic off throughout the day and then if you have any exposed pipes, you are expecting those and you might want to check that car tire light. when you stop at the goes station, where are prices lower? >> check the air, make sure they have those functioning as well, tell yours friends if you find a place that's good for you like san pablo. they have the cheapest listed in the state. not so great for the other prices but santa clara county the best we could find is $3.85 on story road in san jose. a number of prices throughout san jose and santa clara at $3.84. the exxon on bryant street is one of the few beating the $4 mark in san francisco county, $3.99 on bryant street. traffic flows smoothly. the crash in hayward has cleared

showing the buildup that we expect in the 6:00 hour. we will talk about the build yum and the alert for the south bay coming up. good morning, happy wednesday to you. today is the big fed meeting. you know what to expect. shares in moderna are up big as the company got good results from an early test on a vaccine for skin cancer. sam bankman-fried has been denied bail in the bahamas, charged by the u.s. with fraud. bankman-fried was supposed to testify at this congressional hearing but he can't because he's in jail. john ray is one of the good guys. he gets hired to clean up messes. he was hired after the enron financial disaster and ray says this is worse than enron. part of the problem he told congress ftx and sam

bankman-fried didn't keep records on millions or billions of dollars. there's no record keeping whatsoever. the absence of record keeping. employees would communicate invoicing and expenses on slack which is essentially a way of communicating for chatrooms. they use quickbooks, a multibillion dollar company. >> quickbooks? >> quickbooks. nothing against quickbooks. a very nice tool. just not for a multibillion dollar company. twitter is not paying its bills according to a number of reports including rent on its offices and elon musk thinking about not paying laid off workers severance as required by law and by the agreement with twitter. if you do something for twitter, construction services, you may

want to get paid ahead of time. in a day full of news, apple working on a system to allow users in europe to load apps on their iphone without using the app store. apple is under a lot of anti-monopoly pressure here and in europe over the app store. keep in mind when apple first introduced the iphone there was no app store. steve jobs forbid it. he did not want third parties putting their software on his iphone without his approval. youtube was one of the very few apps on the phone, and that one came preinstalled. i'm sure he understood what a big market would be or maybe he didn't, but he wanted to keep that apple iphone completely controlled and pure, which is why you never hear about anybody having a virus on their iphone. >> they waited and they did it right. >> they did it right. now, arguably, it's a monopoly. they're taking a big chunk out of it. in europe apparently they will let them do it. >> really interesting. >> thanks, scott.

6:15. 11 days out from christmas and 18 more days until the new year. wow. and if you are still looking for gifts, you are not alone. today is actually also fedex deadline for the ground shipping. so let me tell you about this. close to 160 million people will shop on the final saturday before christmas. that's nearly half the u.s. population and about 10 million more the last saturday before christmas will be doing their shopping so about one-fourth will shop online only. the rest will do some of it in person. and last week shoppers were saying they finished about half of their holiday purchases. >> you're stressing me out. >> a lot to keep up with. >> i don't have anything to mail. trending this morning, santa came a few weeks early for a daughter who shared her christmas wish for her mother on social media. >> so this illinois girl, her name is isabel milan took to

tiktok to ask for help with her mom's struggling business. take a look. ♪♪ >> so the caption there reads it breaks my heart to see my mom watching the door every day waiting for a customer to walk in. i wish i could give her customers for christmas. well, it struck a chord for so many getting more than 28 million views. the next day milan posted an update and check it out. several workers busy at work after users flooded the restaurant with orders. one drove nearly eight hours just to show up for support. >> wow. >> community in action there. >> and it looks like the food is good, too. >> i hope she had enough. that's nice to see. i love helping small businesses. >> there's an tune, right, with any tool, social media included. you can use it for good. let's try to keep it that way.

>> we like to keep it for good. so true. >> you don't need social media to get the forecast. kari hall is right here ready to give it to us. i'm sure everybody has been posting about how cold it is and folks in other parts of the country, what are you talking about? >> californians. >> it is cold in our standards and we start out with our microclimate weather alert and we are staying in some spots clear. other areas that fog is rolling in. you can see it in san francisco. if clear where you are, might have the opportunity to look at the meteor shower this morning. it will be peaking this morning but will continue now through christmas and the best time to watch is from midnight to dawn. take your time. let your eyes adjust. you can see up to 150 per hour. i saw three this morning and it was beautiful. so now we're taking a look at our cold weather and standards but we look at how coal it's been each day highlighted in blue that's been colder than normal and in orange it was

warmer than normal. normal temperatures in green. so we're looking back at november and only around thanksgiving did it start to warm up, and we ended the month at about two and a half degrees colder than normal in san francisco and so far this month it's still been much colder than normal. only a couple of days that we've had some warmer than normal temperatures. so really starting to drive those numbers down now at 2.7 degrees below what's normal for us. it gets even colder as we go through the forecast especially for other parts of the country dealing with possibly the first polar vortex. other parts of the country like the midwest, the east coast, they could be talking about below zero temperatures going into next week. that could impact your travel. for us, starting on tuesday, but as they move off to the east they will be producing a lot of snow and there may be another

one right behind that affecting us next thursday and friday and i know that's right before christmas. and there's possibly going to be some rain and sierra snow headed our way. as of now it's all dry. we continue with the dry weather through the end of the week and our temperatures will stay very chilly, freezing in the mornings and reaching into the mid-50s for the afternoon. for san francisco it's about the same. also here dropping into the upper 30s. and, mike, you still have that traffic alert? >> we do, kari. we have an important update. chp thinks they will be able to open all lanes. a little bit of traffic flow moving better and continues because of this debris and fuel on the roadway. now this is good if they can reopen the lanes soon because we have traffic shifting over to 87 as well and the avenue for alternates, a crash at capital expressway and a crash on tully

ro welcome back. 6:24. nbc bay area responds to a south bay family having some trouble with a baseball team. >> they asked chris chmura to help them out. good morning, chris. this case stretches back to the early days of the pandemic. back when covid-19 first started this father and son pair paid the a's $178 to put cardboard cutouts of themselves in the coliseum. they later expected to get the cutouts but that didn't happen so they say they wrote the a's. >> i actually have a territory there so i can stop by, just tell me when to pick them up. my son emails, no response. >> they contacted us. we contacted the a's. the team said it sent no fewer than six emails to those who purchased cutouts with detailed instructions how to pick up the

it will be allowed to expire before most likely being reissued for tomorrow morning. so these areas in purple are under the freeze warning where temperatures are colder compared to what we're seeing for the inner bay and the coastline and still even in those areas when temperatures drop at 37 or below, it may deposit a layer of ice on your windshield or any elevated surfaces. we're below freezing in palo alto and scotts valley. freezing in san martin and in dublin as well, as well as much of the north bay where we have the freeze warning continuing. now let's it turn to "today in the bay's" kris sanchez. kris, this cold weather is turning deadly in the south bay. >> reporter: yeah, kari, even without the soaking wet rain, these cold temperatures are really dangerous for people who are living without shelter and that turned deadly in the city of san jose right in the downtown area. two people were found unresponsive and later declared

that they had died in that area in yellow on your screen. the medical examiner would not release more information over exactly where or how they were found protecting their privacy and waiting to notify next of kin according to "the mercury news." outreach teams are out making sure they know about shelters and warming shelters. >> all of our program teams are out there in full force. we have street-based outreach that's also getting the word out with cold weather shelter programs and just really making connections to all of the folks out there to encourage people to come in and stay safe distributing those needed items if people need them and don't want to come in. >> reporter: if you are in a position to support that effort, you can email home first at that address on your screen and can also shop easily through their amazon wish list. they really need blankets,

coats, hats, gloves, other cold weather gear. california families are paying about $900 more to stay warm at home. according to the national energy assistance director's association that's about 17% more than last year and according to that director of that organization, the prices today are the highest they've seen in 15 years. now just yesterday we got new inflation numbers showing a bit of relief in terms of fuel costs, but not in time to keep the house warm through this cold snap. now tlrpe programs if you can't pay your power bill. it's not more efficient or safe to use your oven nor any propane or charcoal heaters indoors. if you know somebody who needs a warm place to go stay safe through the cold snap we do have a list of warming centers on our website. as we were getting in the car this morning we saw that little light talking about possible ice on the roadways. i know, mike inouye, you are

tracking that. kari talked about elevated roadways, windshields, and elevated surfaces like b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. issued an official warming. that may be an issue for braking safely, frost on the tracks would mean it slows the braking system. we'll make sure they slow the trains down. we're looking at the fog, the potential for frozen, black ice on the roadways up here. a crash on 101 heading down into novato. no indication it's due to weather but we'll continue to track the updates. a typical pattern this time of year lighter traffic. there is still the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. we follow this alert since early morning in san jose. we are down to just one lane blocked at hellier. we have folks taking 85 over to 87 so that is shifting your commute. we'll talk about the alternate and the problem there coming up.

disease expert dr. peter chin-hong. thank you for joining us. are bay area hospitals seeing an increase in patients right now? >> yes, definitely. we are talking about covid, influenza, rsv, in older people and in younger folks. so those three things are really driving hospitalizations right now. occupancy rate is about 95% in both pediatric and adults. >> are you finding that people's immune systems are down, we've been wearing masks for so long and now there's this tripledemic going on, are we just having a tough time recovering as well? >> there's no evidence our immune systems are any less agile or effective. we haven't been as exposed to as many viruses the last few years, so it means the population immunity isn't there. what it means is next year we may have an easier time because

will now be part of the giants for years to come. we're talking about superstar shortstop carlos correa. he signed a massive deal to play in san francisco and sources telling nbc sports bay area it amounts to $350 million over 13 years. this will be the largest contract in the team's history and the fourth largest ever. correa is a golden glove winner, a one-time rookie of the year, and a world series champ with his time with the astros. now this has been really a busy past few days for the giants who have now added correea, ross stripling, shawn manaea and mitch haniger. as we take a live look now in san jose christmas in the park all lit up this morning. let's just say holy guacamole. take a look at this. our own raj mathai harvesting his avocados from his own tree in his yard.

deposit a layer of ice on elevated bridges and roadways. in san jose it's frosty. temperatures in the upper 30s now. we'll be in the mid-30s throughout the rest of the morning and then seeing it slowly warming up with all of that sunshine. only heading into the mid-50s for later today. 53 in martinez. we'll see more temperatures like that as we go into the rest of the week and even this weekend. we have two major incidents. that traffic alert continues. instead of two lanes open we have one lane closed. as they cleared the third lane more traffic kicking in. there's more traffic on both of those highways and then some folks would use monterey to get over here and they get over to

good wednesday morning. the time is 6:44 as you head out in brentwood. we are near freezing but also maybe frosty. let the vehicle warm up before that morning commute and get the frost off the windshield. as we go into today all sunny and it's still going to be chilly as we reach into the upper 40s at 1:00 today. we're back to the cold tonight. we'll talk about it coming up. all in the timing here, too. the san mateo bridge almost every day we see this slowing here at least monday through thursday and even during lighter traffic the brake lights are tapping. no incidents reported. i'll track this but we hope to see clearing over the next few minutes. we still have the alert in the south bay to follow up. breaking news for you right

now, the u.s. medical examiners have confirmed what led to the death of renowned soccer journalist grant wahl who suddenly collapsed last week while covering a game during the world cup in qatar. there were some concerns his death may have involved foul play but according to a new statement from his widow medical examiners found he suffered a ruptured aorta stemming from an undetected health condition. grant wahl was 48 years old. it is 6:45. president biden signed the respect for marriage act at a ceremony at the white house. >> and, scott mcgrew, the president is hoping for more bills to come across his desk. time is running out. what are we looking for? maybe a bill to strengthen election law, a bill to keep the government open, a lot to do in the very few days before congress goes home for the holidays. and some of those who go home, remember, aren't coming back. there's a new congress ahead. president biden signing the bill that formally legalizes same sex and interracial marriage. congress stepped in after some

cocoa for everyone. there's a lot going on when we talk about the weather. as we saw the big storm move through the west coast over the weekend it has moved to the east. a tornado tore through and leveled a neighborhood in farmerville. nearly 25 people were injured. some of them critically. you can see the damage. there were reports of trees and power lines knocked over. we have this video of the strong winter storm baring down on wyoming and you can see the wind and snow. they say power outages are possible with the heavy wind-driven snowfalls. looking at the storm moving to

the east and the east coast is bracing for the potential going into tomorrow. we'll track that and see what's going on. here we're dealing with cold. be prepared before you step out the door. keep your pets inside and even take care of your farm animals as well if you have those making sure that they have everything they need to stay warm and also check on those plants and the pipes that are exposed with the outdoor pipes that may be exposed. make sure you are filling up if you see the car tire light on. cold temperatures continue. high temperatures today. tomorrow morning we're back to where we are right now seeing temperatures below freezing in

the north bay, upper 30s for san francisco and below freezing in the tri-valley as well as san jose down to the south county. what we're talking about next week as we're preparing for our christmas travel and going to see family, there's going to be possibly the first polar vortex of the season pushing down into the midwest and most likely far to the south. this may change a lot of travel plans. we'll see that evolve the next few days and we're going to start to see the storms returning to the bay area. there may be another storm right behind that next thursday into friday. a lot to keep in mind and make sure the travel plans are flexible going into next week. things are quiet but it's very cold and temperatures dipping near or below freezing even into the weekend highs in the mid-50s. rain possible by early next week.

welcome back. 6:56 right now. before you head out the door here are our top stories on "today in the bay" starting this morning with a bay area freeze warning. >> a lot of people are waking up to that bitter cold that has turned deadly in the south bay. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in san jose. kris, finding shelter critical when it's this cold outside. >> reporter: though it's not raining and freezing it is so very, very cold, and we know that two people died unhoused on the streets of san jose somewhere in the area in yellow on the map. that's all the santa clara county medical examiner would confirm at this point. we're trying to get separate confirmation ourselves. they're not tree leasing how or where they were found at this point. now we do know that outreach teams are making sure people know about shelters and warming centers and handing out cold weather gear for people who don't want to go inside and want to stay where they are. if you are in a position to
