>> such a sight for sore eyes. >> i don't think we have seen al a lot of different ways. never quite like that. we start on something that is near and dear to al's heart. the weather. a tale of two storms. across the south a series of tornados touched down in multiple states, leveled homes and damage. >> from the all the way up to new england. >> dylan has her eye on all of it. let's start with morgan chesky is in grapevine, texas, this morning, where one of those tornados hit. we can see the damage, morgan. good morning. >> reporter: yeahg morning. the damage is extensive and

within the last few minutes we are hearing new reports from louisiana that dozens of people are injured and at least two people are dead as a result of these terrifying overnight twisters. here in texas, damage extensive. some buildings gutted or reduced to nothing but bricks. all from a massive storm system that marches on. this morning a dual winter threat. snow piling up in the plains. >> i am in a tornado. >> reporter: and rare december tornadoes in the south. late tuesday, major destruction in northern louisiana. a tornado ripping through this community in caddo parish. homes left in pieces as search and rescue teams look for possible victims. nearby in kaetsville, a child's body found near his mother's. both killed as the storm swept through. a possible tornado leading to extensive damage. police say about 20 people were injured. one family in the small town of wayne, oklahoma, rushed to the

basement as tornado sirens waled, coming up to find their home pummeled by an ef-twister. in grapevine, texas, another tornado tore through, sending debris flying and causing drivers to turn around. >> things started swirling around and hitting the side of the house. that's when i ran for cover. >> tim lancaster's home went untouched but his car wash business blocks away was destroyed. >> reporter: what did you find when you walked outside? >> debris everywhere. >> reporter: those wind gusts toppled power lines. an houour west, this truck flipping on to its side. flyers had to shelter in place. >> proceed immediately to the nearest severe weather area inside the terminal building. >> reporter: and the danger

isn't over yet with millions at risk for tornadoes and under blizzard warnings again today. the blinding snow and ice bearing down on the heartland. >> if you-on blizzard here. >> reporter: in northeast colorado, there is no way out. blizzard conditions lo closing every major roadway from northern california to the northeast, americans facing a brutal week of winter weather. and this morning here in texas, the power crews working to restore electricity to those who live in the community. search and rescue crews remaining busy at this hour in louisiana searching for survivors. >> morgan chesky, thank you very much. >> as he was saying, where is this storm going, dylan, you have the answers here? >> depending where you are, you are seeing something totally different than an area nearby. let's focus on the tornados first. tornado watches in effect to 1:00 p.m. central time. we also have tornado warnings popping up. look at cloud-to-ground lightning. within these storms we see the spin-up of the tornados, large hail and also see wind gusts up to about 60, 70 miles an hour.

the straight-line winds. this is the area today, louisiana, mississippi, alabama, even the panhandle of florida where we will see the strongest storms today. again with the damaging winds, also the hail. but in red here, almost pretty much the same area, we have the long track tornados and perhaps ef-2 or stronger. that's the warm side of the storm. the cold side, blizzard warnings, includes the arrowhead of minnesota where we have the chance of those reduced visibilities under a quarter of a mile or less, gusty winds that kind of contribute to that low visibility. in the northeast, too, winter storm watches and ice storm warnings through parts of maryland, too. we will end up with a foot and a half to two feet of snow through minnesota, in the interior northeast we could end up with a foot of snow in some areas. >> thank you. and we turn now to a promising sign for consumers in the u.s. economy. help by a dip in gas and food prices, inflation appears to be slowing with a better than

expected rate of 7.1% in november. in an effort to continue that trend, the federal reserve is expected to announce another interest rate hike. brian joins us to explain what it means for everyone's wallet. start with the inflation report. better than expected. where did we see prices drop. >> good morning. we showed the numbers. it's showing some signs of improvement. we are still far away when you consider that prices were increasing at a rate of 9.1% in the summer. that's slowing to 8. and then 7.7. as of yesterday in the morning we got the report showing that prices increased by 7.1% between november of this year and november last year. where economists say we need to be is closer to 2%. now, what's keeping inflation high? the biggest contributor is the thing that most of us spend our money on and that is rent. rent increasing, shelter 0.6% in that report and food remained expensive, the report showing bread, eggs and fruit remained

expensive in november. a lot of work to be done as we look towards that fed meeting this afternoon. >> the fed is looking for a target of 2% for inflation. being over 7% means it has more work to do, wants to increase interest rates but there is a hope that perhaps not by as much as we have seen the last few meetings? >> that is the expectation. so if you recall, the fed has been raising interest rates by 0.75 percentage points in each of the last four consecutive meetings. the expectation, even prior to the inflation report, that the fed was going to make its interest rate increases a little bit smaller, perhaps a half a percentage point at the conclusion of today's meeting. that would still be raising the short-term costs. don't look for any revive on mortgage rates or credit cards any time soon. it tells that you the fed is

seeing encouraging signs on the story of inflation knowing it stakes time for the interest rate hikes to bite into what could be a slowing economy. so the fed wants to take a wait-and-see approach as they do the interest rate hikes which is the reason they may want to make those a little bit smaller today. another major financial story, the disgraced co-founder of cryptocurrency giant ftx now facing criminal charges and this morning we're learning more about the extent of the alleged fraud that cost customers billions. stephanie gosk has more. good morning. >> the bankrupt ftx was a crypto exchange which may be a mystery to a lot of people. what sam bankman-fried is accused of is something everyone lands. he lied, took people's money. what the new ceo called old-fashioned embezzlement. the wonder kid entrepreneur of cryptocurrency, sam bankman-fried today is in a jail in the bahamas where he is vowing to fight his extradition to the u.s. in new york, federal authorities laying out their criminal case against him.

>> i want to be clear. this is about fraud. fraud is fraud. >> reporter: and they say this fraud is one of the biggest in u.s. history with $8 billion in customer deposits now missing. prosecutors charging the 30-year-old with eight criminal counts, including conspiracy to defraud investors, lenders and the u.s. government. and they say he moved billions of dollars of ftx customer founds to hedge fund alameda. >> used that money for his personal bennett, to make personal investments and cover expenses and debts of his hedge fund. >> reporter: according to a complaint filed by the s.e.c., bankman-fried lied to investors and customers creating a business that the government says was a house of cards pitching the exchange with high-profile celebrities. according to the s.e.c., customers around the world believed his lies and sent millions of dollars to ftx. he allegedly used the money for his own personal gain, lavish

real estate purchases and large political donations. he denied the accusations of fraud in an interview with andrew ross sorokin. >> i made a lot of mistakes. there are things i would give anything to be able to do over again. i didn't ever try to commit fraud on anyone. >> bankman-fried was supposed to testify at a congressional hearing tuesday. instead of the new ceo of the now bankrupt ftx who took over after bankman-fried resigned answered questions for four hours trying to explain how the company fell apart. >> it appears from concentration of control in the hands of a small group of grossly inexperienced nonsophisticated kids. >> reporter: when asked to respond to bankman-fried's denial that there was fraud, he had this to say. >> i don't find those statements to be credible. >> reporter: bankman-fried told the court he is going to fight extradition his attorneys say they are considering all legal

options while the magistrate judge rejected bail and said he will be held in custody in the bahamas to february 8. bankman-fried was in the courtroom supported by his parents yesterday. >> both professors, right? >> stanford. >> law professors. >> that's right. >> thank you. craig is with us. >> good morning. the southern border battle is raging once again with a new wave of migrants crossing into the united states and it comes ahead of next week's expected end of a trump-era immigration rerestriction n and the dedepar of homeland security says it is sending more agents to deal with the influx. nbc's gabe gutierrez has made his way to mexico. he joins us from the mexican side of the border. >> reporter: good morning. temperatures feel below freezing here and some migrants have spent a miserable night. i am standing in ciudad juarez.

that's the rio grande. that's on u.s. soil waiting to get to the border fence. behind that fence is el paso. you see how long this line stretches for and local officials in el paso say this is a sign of things to come. this morning the immigration battle at the southern border is intensifying. for days, huge groups of migrants have been crossing in el paso, texas, clutching blankets and burning fires to keep warm. this family from nicaragua says they are desperate to reach the u.s. they just crossed the rio grande. the temperatures are dropping as the sun sets and they are getting ready to turn themselves into border patrol on the other side of that fence. this influx comes days before a federal court order that a pandemic era border restriction known as title 42 be lifted. the restriction gives the u.s. government authority to turn

away migrants, including asylum seekers, at the border, citing the need to prevent covid from spreading inside the country. daily illegal border crossings could reach 10,000 per day on top of a record 2.4 million already during the past year. at a migrant shelter in mexico, we felt this family of four from guatemala. they are waiting until title 42 is lifted before they decide to cross to the united states. department homeland security blames criminal smuggling organizations for exploiting migrants for profit and says it's deployed more agents to the region. >> the increase and encounters at the southern border is not exclusive to the united states. what we are seeing is an increase in migration throughout the hemisphere. >> reporter: in el paso, some officialals say the e federal govevernment neeeeds to do m mo. migrant processing centers are already crowded. some people even sleeping

outside. >> it is a state of emergency. there is no municipality that could handle what we are seeing and about to see with the lifting of title 42. >> reporter: again, this long line of migrants here is technically on u.s. soil, about to turn themselves into border patrol. they have spent this long night in freezing temperatures. you can see how long this line extends. the department of homeland security now wants $3 billion from congress to help handing the influx of migrant when title 42 is lifted possibly as soon as next week. >> gabe gutierrez there in front of quite the scene along the border. thank you. 16 minutes after the hour. we turn now to the world cup. one half of this weekend's final is now set after superstar lionel messi led argentina to a dominating victory over croatia. later today argentina will find out who they will be facing. megan fitzgerald is covering the action for us in doha. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you.

since last month's garage fire that caused those severe burns on his face, hands and chest he spent a week at a burn center, received intense treatment. he shared those images and injuries with us we can't show a lot of those pictures on the air. and jay also surprised me with his spirit after all he has been through. >> first of all, i am so glad to be sitting across from you >> thank you i am afraid i had to get on fire to be on "today" show. >> i have to say, i was, as the country was, extremely worried i mean - >> the country was. >> people were like, what happened to jay? >> people are very nice. i got wonderful cards and letters. >> i love when your doctor was meeting you were listening to a voicemail, hey, this is joe from indonesia, and your doctor was like, i put together who it was. >> oh, yeah. president biden. that was very nice yeah i have more important things to do, thank you, mr. president i appreciate it. >> let's talk about what happened.

>> okay. >> you do what you love. >> right. >> with your babies, all your cars. >> yes. >> you are doing your thing. tell me what happened that day. >> well, i was -- it was a 190 white steam car. so the fuel line was clogged i was underneath it. i said blow some air through the line and then the line, poof! boom, i got a face full of gas and then the pilot light jumped and my face caught on fire i said to my friend, i said, dave, i'm on fire. i said, no, dave, i'm on fire. >> how long are you been buddies, how many years? >> thankfully, jay's long-time pal dave, was standing a few feet away. >> he was really engulfed. i couldn't see his face. >> it was on fire? >> it was a wall of fire. >> what was the first thing you did when saw him engulfed in flames >> i grabbed him he was just under the car. i grabbed him by the head and pulled his head into my chest.

>> i thought it was a bad tinder date i thought, what's going on here? >> what are you doing? he saved you okay you kind of brought him into your chest >> i did i started to smother the fire. then i put the car out i told jay, go to the bathroom, you know, put cold water on your face. >> i put the car out, put the fire out went into the bathroom. >> what did you think? >> it was -- he downplays that, but it was horrific. it was a scary thing it doesn't take a genius to figure out call 911 and that's what i did. >> how would you describe what he looked like to you? >> it was -- it was horrible it was horrible. in fact, he asked me, how do i look i said not good. it's going to be a bad thing you know, the first two layers, when they are peeling off right now, you know, this is a real issue. >> doctors took a look at jay and told him to go to a burn center, but jay had other plans.

>> yeah. i drove home right after that. >> you drove yourself home why did you decide to go home for that night >> because my wife doesn't drive anymore and i didn't want her stuck and not knowing what was going on it just seemed like the right thing to do. and i think it was. >> so you loved your wife more than you worried about yourself? >> yeah, that's it. >> is that it? >> well, i think there is something to that. >> jay and wife mavis have been married four decades what did your wife say when she saw you? >> oh, thrilled. >> did she say go to the hospital >> of course. >> the couple would spend the next nine days at the grossman burn center. doctors had to scrape away layers of burned skin, a painful procedure, but say jay never complained he was more worried about everyone else, sending pizzas to the nurses and cheering up other patients were you worried what you might

look like when it was all said and done >> when you look like me, you don't worry about what you look like look, if i'm george clooney, that would be a huge problem, you know but they said it would be all right. you know, my attitude is, i trust people who are the best doing what they do. >> they had to fix your ear? >> yeah. >> is that a brand-new ear >> no, no they saved the original parts they remolded it this is like the thinnest skin on the body. so it burns pretty - >> so that had to be reconstructed. >> it's like flash paper they fix that. >> and this part >> this whole thing here and they put that netting thing on there and i guess the skin -- >> what about your hands and fingers? >> as you can see, those got burned pretty bad. >> he also spent eight hours a day isolated in a hyperbaric chamber. the pure oxygen helped him heal. >> it's basically a glass coffin they seal it
