hi, everyone. i'm kate snow. >> i'm aaron gilchrist, and "nbc daily news" starts right now. today, wednesday, december 14th, 2022. utter devastation. powerful storms on the move across the midwest and the south now turning deadly. a trail of destruction left behind and where the storms are headed next. taking a hike. the fed is raising the interest rates yet again and how much that means for how much you pay. time up for tiktok? the lawmakers are seeking to ban
12:01 pm
the social media giant, and what it means for your social page. and 10 years after the attack in sandy hook. >> one thing she said is that she loved us. >> they are 6, and i am thinking that they are about to die, and i wanted them to know how loved they are. >> i spoke about the incredible bond and those terrifying moments and the road to healing. we begin this hour with the powerful storm system going coast to coast, and bringing dangerous weather to millions of americans. >> a blizzard as dumped nearly two feet of snow, and in the south, tornadoes have torn up cities and towns. >> this is damage on the texas/louisiana border, and at least 10 tornadoes confirmed in the last 24 hours, and that number is likely to rise as the crews are surveying the damage, and flash flooding is another act of damage as this storm
12:02 pm
continues. >> we have guad venegas with us. and tell us about the destruction there? >> aaron, we still have flash flood warnings there from the storms, and we saw that from the damage in louisiana and oklahoma. overnight, we saw two tornadoes touching in northwest louisiana, and unfortunately one left two people dead. this was in cattle parish, a mother and her son, and then we had images of the damages in the parish nearby, and in union parish, and earlier today, we had another tornado, and very touched the ground about 50 miles southwest of baton rouge. that tornado damaged the structures according to local authorities and left the people trapped that have since been
12:03 pm
rescued and the energy companies, and the power companies, and about 400 customers have lost power, and this is earlier today as the weather is making its way through the region there. >> and bill, let me go to you, and where is the powerful storm heading next? and how unique is this? >> well, it is pretty rare in december. more than 20 reports of tornadoes yesterday and today, and now we are seeing the threat from baton rouge to new orleans, and southern mississippi and southern alabama. right now, we have currently about eight active tornado warnings between hattiesburg and meridian, and the sirens are going off, and there is a report of a rotating wall cloud in hattiesburg, and this is going to continue through 8:00 p.m., and it is rare to get these rotating shelf clouds, and that greatest risk is there in the red area, and from biloxi to
12:04 pm
jackson, and then overnight, over to the southern panhandle in florida, and overnight, we will see tornadoes and long tracked tornadoes which are the most deadly. and the blizzard part of this, it is an event of like rapid city, where it is 25-mile-an-hour wind gusts, and then we see it heading into new england. and we will have storm warnings issue and ice warnings, and even in places like d.c. for the morning commute. >> thank you, guad venegas. and bill cairns, thank you. and now, the fed is announcing a 0.5% rate hike. >> this is important to maintain a stance of monetary policy that is sufficiently restrictive to return a rate of 2% over time. >> and that is the consumer
12:05 pm
price index to indicate that inflation is 7.1% year over year, which is down two points from june. nbc news correspondent tom costello is joining us from d.c., and you have been watching this, so tell us about the conditions that the fed had to consider before making this rate increase, the modest increase? >> well, it is still in a pickle here. it has a challenge. the problem is that unemployment rate is still at 50-year lows and we have far more workers than jobs available, but it is going to drive up the wages, and feeds the inflationary cycle, and the inflationary is very high, and very high, and that is because the target that the fed has is 2% inflation, and so now, the fed has one tool in the tool box, and this is to keep hiking the interest rates, and it is like a sledge hammer, and they
12:06 pm
only have a scalpel, and so they have to slowly drive it up, and then there you will drive down the whole cycle. nobody wants to see people thrown out their inflationary this is the only way they can do it, so it is the seventh rate hike this year, and the fed chair made it clear, you can expect more rate hikes into next year. >> thank you, tom costello. >> the crypto currency is facing criticism from the senate banking committee. >> it is from bad actors who believe that rules don't simply apply to them. >> remember to distinguish between human failure and the instrument with which the failure occur doccurred.
12:07 pm
in this case, the failure is software and the code committed no crime. >> this is after the house conduct ad hearing where the announced ceo of the failed ftx. >> this is really old fashioned embezzlement. it is taking money from the customers and using it for your own purpose. >> cnbc technology reporter mackenzie nogales is joining us, and is there more planned scrutiny? >> the most recognizable spokesperson is kevin o'leary who blamed finance for the collapse, and said that ftx's former ceo freedman was a monopoly, and so, remember, that it was accounting for more than half of the exchange process,
12:08 pm
and we also heard from the actor ben mckenzie who is a vocal critic of the industry, and that is what someone had to win and someone had to lose, but it duds not mean that the distribution is even. this is gambling, and this is speculation. at best zero sum, and this is not including the environmental cost of bitcoin. >> as for more congressional scrutiny going forward, there is a push to lock in the rules of the industry, and today, senators warren and marshall introduced a bill to lockdown on the crypto-backed money. >> thank you very much. condolences are pouring in for stephen twitch boss. he was the longtime
