5:19 am
ingredients to make your mayo-nog. >> kari is, like, i won't be looking for that at all. only a few days until christmas, and we are also dealing with king tides. i know you may have family in town and may want to head to the coast, but a heads up that those tides are going to be a lot higher than what we typically see. what is happening now is the sun is at its closest point to the earth, and the moon is at its closest point to the earth, and that's creating a gravitational pool on the ocean, and that makes the water come further inland and also creates flooding in some of our low-lying areas. that's what we are going to deal with today and the next few days. so it's basically late morning when we see the highest of the tides, and we see the typical areas near the embarcadero, and marin county. we see some of the areas that are usually flooding during king
5:20 am
tide, and we will have to deal with that today. also a storm pushing inland will help build up some of the higher tides but this is not a significant storm at this point. we will see spotty showers coming in late this evening, starting in the north bay and then continues to spread across the rest of the bay area with breezy winds and light rain. we are looking mostly about a tenth of an inch or less. we are dry throughout the weekend and next week we have the significant storm that we are going to be watching on tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday. it may be a while. during that time we are looking at the potential of maybe three to six -- maybe even seven inches of rain next week. it's going to be pretty big if it holds up as computer models are showing right now. for the sierra, no snow throughout the weekend, and next week we could see several feet of snow, maybe two to three, four, five feet of snow in the
5:21 am
sierra. that's going to be a big one, and at least we have a few more days to prepare heading into christmas. 60 degrees, and we will enjoy that for the next few days. mike, so far the commute seems smooth. >> not so bad. chp just called out one spot where there's low visibility there, and low traffic flow going on and you see green sensors around the bay, and you know as we get close to the holiday weekend and the holidays are on the weekend, we have a lighter traffic flow. westbound is your commute, and the slowing on 680 did clear. watch for the lights, and it shouldn't be a big deal, just a little fog reported for the north bay and chp did call out the benicia bridge.

5:26 am
why and to correct the gap that affects millions of us. >> earthquake insurance is not part of a standard homeowners insurance policy. you have to buy a separate earth quake insurance policy. here's the thing, most people don't. there are 14 million housing units in california right now, and yet the california earthquake authority says it only sold 1.1 million policies. let's talk about how much it costs and how to see if maybe it would work for you. we asked how much is a earthquake policy on average, $815 a year. you can get a quote for free at earthquakeauthority.com. if you have insurance, you already likely have an insurance agent and you can ask them for help, too. click the qr code on your screen

5:31 am
get ready all you wizards and witches out there, because it's going to be a jolly ole time this morning. we do have team coverage on the weather across the nation that may impact holiday travel plans. and let's start with meteorologist, kari hall. we're talking cold. >> yeah, the coldest a lot have seen in 30 or 40 years for this holiday. so far not seeing any major delays, and that's the good news. we are tracking a very strong stone from denver to kansas, and there's bitterly cold temperatures. in a lot of spots it's going to be sub zero. this is a look at our friday afternoon temperatures, where it's 1 degree below zero in chicago, and this extends to the south and even houston will be in a deep freeze.
5:32 am
saturday, we are looking at the cold and it moves towards the east coast, and this could have major impacts to travel. let's go to "today in the bay" bob redell over at the airport. this is going to be a big headache for a lot of people. >> reporter: yeah, and fortunately we are not seeing major cancelations yet at the three bay area airports, and the good news, the departure and arrival board do not have too many yellows or reds, and yellows are delays, and there are a few cancelations. we saw one to denver and another one to kansas city and a couple more to l.a. and hawaii. this is the scene this morning out of sfo. not too crowded so far, and this taken by one of our colleagues
5:33 am
about an hour ago, and according to flight aware, there's a few cancelations or delays. and the fact that so many people are traveling by air this weekend, aaa reports that over 7 million people are expected to hop on a plane over the next couple of days. that's close to the numbers we saw before the pandemic. flight aware is already reporting around 810 delays of flights in or two the united states for today. >> i am taking a redeye out of portland. i may get stuck in chicago, but i don't really think so. think positively. >> everybody is stressed. pilots are stressed. the crew is stressed. passengers are stressed. >> take a deep breath. >> some airlines, including american, southwest and jetblue are waiving flight change fees,
5:34 am
and others are offering waivers, and if your flight is canceled by the airline it's a good idea to ask about travel credits even if it's a nonrefundable fehr. it doesn't seem too chaotic and very orderly before -- what is today? thursday. three days before christmas. let's head over to mike inouye for more on who is going to be heading out for the holidays. >> looking over here, and we checked with our buddies at gas buddies, and we are starting with 3.49. it's the arco in mill valley. that's in the north bay. castro valley, 3.81, and that's over in the east bay.
5:35 am
south bay, 3.77. check for gas buddy on what is closest to you. and then we are looking at green sensors, and the fog is called out by chp and by kari as well. fog in the north bay may affect folks heading to and across the benicia bridge. we are picking up a little volume and seeing more folks. back over to you. >> thanks, mike. after a major earthquake shook humboldt -- >> the 3.3 magnitude centered east of union city. people say they felt it as far north as concord and as south as san josé. a lot of people on edge. this is following the strong earthquake along the humboldt
5:36 am
county coast. >> i was at my dad's and i felt shaking and i thought somebody was playing, and a buddy of mine said we have an earthquake. >> the whole room started shaking and i went outside to see my parents and they were all panicked and they said, did you feel an earthquake. then the chat started blowing up. >> people are on edge. this morning, 3,400 people are still without water after that deadly quake in humboldt county. you can see the damage in the video. two people died as a result of that earthquake. now, two humboldt residents lost their dogs after their home caught on fire. they say they only left their home for 20 minutes and that was enough time for their home to catch completely on fire. >> i had to come out three times to get breath before i finally found them in the back bedroom and i carried them out but was not able to save them.
5:37 am
>> their friends started a gofundme page to help out with their loss. they are not the only ones that lost their homes, and more than 62 homes in that area have been red or yellow tagged which means they are too dangerous to enter. and many homes are without water and those that do have water are being asked to boil their water. >> it's important that you boil your water before you drink it. it will be sometime before we are able to test the system to make sure that it's clean. >> pg&e says there are only a few hundred homes without power still, and the 1300-foot grid that is closed because of damage from the earthquake is now
5:38 am
closed. you should check out our site. the white house is stepping in what it can do to lower the number of flu and cold suffers out there. they are opening the federal stockpile of tamiflu to respond to the heightened demand. >> for some, the relief cannot come soon enough. nbc's sam brock looks at reasons behind the shortage and helpful alternatives. >> great to be with you. this is a problem that is, no doubt, plaguing so many families and people who are just trying to find tylenol or ibuprofen for their kids or themselves. the owner of this pharmacy says people are coming and looking at medications that are not
5:39 am
available, and so what are you supposed to do? you find yourself in this position where you are trying to figure out if there are substitutes that can work, and can i talk to my doctor and maybe get a different prescription, and what about generic medications, and we will run through that, and you can't do some things which is use expired medication. we'll talk about that, coming up on "today." king tides are expected on the coast and a warning starting at 6:00 a.m. the highest tides are expected to occur in the mid to late mornings for the next few days. the warning is expected to be in effect until 2:00 p.m. on sunday. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking our weekend forecast. kari, what is it looking like? >> we have been talking about the king tides coming back, and the low-lying areas that flood
5:40 am
during these times. also if you are going to be in santa cruz this weekend, a nice weekend for enjoying sunshine and some of the waves but it will be chilly, only reaching 60 degrees on friday. we're headed for the mid-60s on christmas day. if you are going to tahoe this weekend, it looks clear getting there and back. the temperatures headed for the low to mid-40s for friday, but upper 40s by the end of the weekend and on saturday we have the 49ers game at levi stadium, and it's going to be beautiful out there, upper 60s and a light wind. we are also going to see mild weather. warming up for l.a. this weekend, if you are going to visit family, near 80 degrees in southern california. mike, heading off from work this morning, how is it looking for us? >> looks like people might want more company, and i don't know why you would want more company at a toll plaza, but it's light, and with the fog drifting around, no surprises, no

good thursday morning. as you are heading off to work in fremont, parts of the east bay in the 40s thanks to a blanket of cloud cover. it does stay mostly cloudy today and at least mild for the
5:45 am
afternoon, but we're getting ready for some of us to get some rain. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. as you are crossing to or from the east bay, here the san mateo bridge no problem. there was flashing lights but you saw them extinguish. look, they are putting up the flashing sign. crews are finished for their morning job, and others getting to their morning job, we will track the build coming up. a national cookie chain facing fines for allegedly violating labor laws. a series of fines have been issued against a dozen crumbl cookie stores, and the fines amount to just under $60,000. in a statement the company expressed disappointment in
5:46 am
discovering some franchises committed the violations, and noting it only hospitalized at a few of the brand's many stores. we're guessing it's break for students at hogwart's students. kris, it looks like the spirit of harry potter is alive and well where you are. what is the house you are going to visit? >> reporter: yes, this is the harry potter house. i am a humbopuff, i just found out. it's such an elaborate display, and this is the work of two people and they are opening it up to the public. we are going to have a butterbeer, right?
5:47 am
yeah, it's butterbeer light. >> this is just -- it looks absolutely like a movie scene here. this is glenn. good morning, glenn simon. i understand the wand picked me? >> yeah, the first step is for the wand to pick you. there's a number of spells you can choose. they are listed on that sign over there. you know which spells are actually allowed in the alley. try this one. >> by the way, this is really legitimate. i just smelled cotton candy over there. all right. aloh mora. maybe it's my tv accent.
5:48 am
you have a number of different spells and it's super elaborate. you are an artist and glenn is an engineer, and it came together perfectly. >> yeah, 20 years of harry potter collections. let's do another spell. >> reporter: okay. >> incendio. come on, glenn. do we need -- oh, there, we got it. there we go. sometimes you need practice for your magic to work. >> if magic were easy, everybody would do it. >> exactly. >> reporter: exactly. there we have the book of monsters. this is all for fun. you do it because you love harry potter and you have had collections for halloween and you stretched it out to christmas, but this is also a fundraiser? >> correct. >> we wanted to give back and
5:49 am
give people a chance -- we don't charge admission, but we wanted to give people a chance to give back, and we posted a fundraiser and it's a resort for critically ill children and their families to spend the week there. >> when the neighbors are awake, there's music and snow sometimes. we will post some of that on facebook and on instagram so you can see that. the address is on magnolia avenue. it's not too far from alameda and 880 in san josé. we will post that as well, too. we will be back here for more magic at 6:45 if you are still around. i hope you join us. >> if people leave, kris, use the magic and zap them back.
5:50 am
>> reporter: that's not the sound of my stomach growling. it's the book of monsters. >> okay. i was going to ask. >> reporter: i don't want to spell you -- it starts on monday until january 1st, not 31st, but new year's day. >> looks like a lot of fun. >> hufflpuff. whatever that means. >> you will need a puffy coat. >> yeah, it's cold. at least it's warming up a little bit for us, but we are getting ready for rain. take a look at the system approaching the bay area. even though it's looks pretty big, it's not going to be a significant storm for us. in fact, it just brings in overnight rain and we need it. we just got the drought monitor update and across the west the drought persists, and we are
5:51 am
seeing no change as we zoom into the bay area. we are still seeing some of the worst of the drought right here in the central valley as well as parts of the bay area. we have had so far over five inches of rain, and that's a deficit of over four inches of rainfall. oakland needs an inch of rain to catch up to normal, and half inch in san francisco to get up to normal for this date. and it looks like with the next several days we could see this starting to make it up as the spotty rain moves in later tonight. we are dry for the weekend, but then going into next week several big storms coming our way that we will be watching starting on tuesday. it could bring possibly several inches of rain as you take a look at the screen, maybe three, four, five, six, seven inches of rain. it looks big next week. for the sierra, you could see a
5:52 am
significant amount of snowfall with the potential of several feet between christmas and the new year. mike, on the roads, it seems like it has been good, all except for the fog. >> yeah, the fog is the issue for some folks. traveling through san rafael, you can see it. no problems from santa rosa down to the golden gate bridge. we don't register the fog on the roadway with the index, and if you saw that last shot, you know it's probably tougher to see up through here, and we had slowing through the altamont and vasco. back to you. >> thanks, mike. many americans are saying they like to work from home but this time of year they are feeling lonely. >> yeah, no secret santas or office parties, but it's just you and your webcam. and now scott mcgrew shows us a
5:53 am
solution. >> this is ground floor, and it's not a restaurant though there's a place to eat, and it's a private club designed to be a work space, where you can work and also make friends. >> they just literally don't have an office to go through, and you are looking around and saying where do i go to make a friend. you can go to starbucks and try and strike up a conversation in the queue, and they will think get away from me, this is not normal behavior. >> you remember back when we were little on the playground, all you had to do is go up to somebody and say want to be friends? you didn't even need to know their name. it's harder as an adult. ground floor makes that easier. everybody here by definition wants to be friends. it's what they signed up for.
5:54 am
