with the look at the forecast. >> foggy, as we have seen recently, a lot lately, and cold temperatures to start. most of the fog is that fog that develops when we see all that moisture on the ground condensing and it creates low visibility for the delta and parts of sacramento and the central valley. and that's moving into the north bay as well, and in san rafael, we are starting off with fog and low visibility, and that will linger through 10:00 with temperatures in the low 40s and eventually making it up to 50 degrees in that area, and then we will get a little more sunshine. mike, you are watching the roads and the bay bridge? >> yeah, the roads are holiday light, right, and the metering lights have been turned on as well. we will see backup at the toll plaza. it's still the bay bridge, not completely clear. oh, my goodness, the maps are all weirded out right now, so we

they are going to continue to discuss and try to get the spending bill forward, and chuck schumer said they are not at a deal yet in the early morning hours but will try and reach one by the end of the day. >> hopeful news we are watching out for there in washington. residents in san francisco's castro district are preparing for the worst, an active shooter. last night business owners took part in an event on market street to learn what to do in case of an active shooter situation, and that event was put together by castro patrol, and this comes after the shooting at an lgbtq community nightclub in colorado. >> if you look at synagogues or a lot of other places that are vulnerable, i think people are starting to look at this as something that is necessary. >> recommended precautions include a highly visible

security team, checking every single person for weapons before they enter and having a detailed response plan in place. this holiday season many are struggling to make it in the bay, and this comes as inflation stands at 7.1%, and with high prices across the nation food banks are struggling, including several in the bay area. look at the photo here, and it shows the power of inflation in just a year's time. clearly the left photo is what could have been bought with just $25 in 2021. on the right, a photo of what could be bought with the same amount of money now. take a look at that difference. nbc bay area, telemundo 48 and safeway are teaming up to feed families this season, and so far you have helped to raise $3 million for the nourishing neighbors food drive.

it continues through christmas day. the next time you are at safeway, tear off a sheet at the counter, scan the code and it will add $10 to your total. that money will provide 20 meals to people in need. >> it's just that easy. it really is. a lot of people are starting to wonder if the crab will be available this season. a lot of it depends on migrating humpback whales along the coast. the season was supposed to begin in mid november and has been on hold until december 31st. it's the fourth year we are seeing delays. and then the weather is pounding the rockies and part of the midwest. these are turning cheyenne, wyoming, into a frozen tundra. look at that. with the windchill, colorado is

experiencing some of its coldest weather in more than 30 years. in some places yesterday it got down to 60 degrees below zero. that sounds very chilly. that's impacting holiday travel, as you can imagine, and bob redell will have an update ahead. >> that's dangerous cold. >> absolutely. you think about just traveling, and what if your car breaks down? within minutes you are in danger of, you know, death in that kind of weather. so it's very dangerous, especially from us coming from the bay area, and may not really be prepared for those kinds of conditions, and it's affecting travel and the flights coming into our area. we are seeing the snow tapering off for the denver area, but we can see it moving through kansas as well. it's approaching chicago at this hour but is combined with frigid temperatures as we take a look at what is ahead as it continues to move off to the east. this is a look at afternoon

temperatures where chicago is at 1 degree below zero. it pushes into the south where new orleans is barely above freezing. we see for the east coast a strong storm. you may hear the cycle of genesis, and that could affect the christmas travel here in the bay area. we may be experiencing some of the warmest temperatures anywhere over the next few days, and that's good news for us. mike, you are looking at the drive from richmond? >> yeah, the morning commute at this time of day, light as it has been and even lighter now as we approach the holiday and the weekend, the holiday weekend. looking at the approach coming out of richmond, no slowing. there's a disabled truck, a big rig coming through cornelia westbound your commute direction, and one lane may be

pleasant hill. we are talking about rain in tonight's forecast for some, and that's coming up in a few minutes. and then out of the east bay, a little tough with the lighting there from emeryville around the bay bridge. the backup is light at the toll plaza but it's starting to form and show more at the toll plaza lanes. wall street is set to open modestly higher after stocks rallied yesterday. the dow rose more than 575 points while the s&p 500 and nasdaq were up a percent and a half. strong data on consumer confidence boosted the gains, and the market is still on pace to finish the year in the red. in focus today, data on jobless

claims. just into our news room, the economy grew at a rate of 3.2% during the third quarter. that's according to the just-released final revision of the report from september. the forecast of consumer spending driving growth. economists still feel the country may go into the recession given the high interest rates. bay area native and ftx founder sam bankman-fried is back in the u.s. to face federal fraud charges. this is following extradition from the bahamas. he arrived in new york last night. he's facing a lot of things. he's in federal custody and could appear in court as early as today to face multiple charges, federal wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering charges. he could face life in prison if found guilty. and netflix is taking a page

will see a quick round of rain moving through tonight. at 10:30 we see spotty showers moving through the east bay. by tomorrow morning it's clearing out so most of us get a very little of rain, one-tenth of an inch or less. and then there are big storms heading our way next week. starting on tuesday that could continue into wednesday, thursday and maybe even friday, and the models are showing a huge amount of rainfall next week, between christmas and the new year, we could see anywhere from three, four, five or even six and seven inches of rain for the santa cruz mountains. if you are going to the sierra this weekend, it's looking good getting there. once again, next week is when the storms start to move in and we could see several feet of snow between christmas and the new year. what we will see tonight, just spotty light showers, and we

morning. >> i think people are probably hoping to use the magic to fix the severe weather across the nation impacting holiday travel plans. our bob redell is tracking delays and the chance of canceled flights at local airports. mike inouye will tell you where to fill up before you hit the road, but first kari hall is talking about conditions across the country. it's cold. >> it will be colder for some spots out east, and we are seeing the plunge of very cold arctic air pushing across the country and that could cause travel problems. as of now we have not seen any major delays across the country, despite the fact that we have snow moving through denver and now kansas and missouri and making its way through iowa and approaching chicago right now. we are going to continue to see this system moves off towards

the east, and these are the high temperatures and then once the snowstorm starts to hit the east coast, that could cause a chain reaction of flight delays across the country. we are talking about high temperatures across the south not making it up to freezing, and sub temperatures further to the north. for now we have "today in the bay"'s bob redell at the oakland national airport. have you seen delays or cancelations yet? >> reporter: obviously you don't want to see any delays or cancelations, and delays look like they are ten, 15, to 35 minutes, and we had one cancelation to denver and one to kansas city. this was the scene across the bay. of course, we are in oakland right now, and across the bay at

sfo this morning, not too crowded. that was video taken from 90 minutes ago. and there's just a handful of cancelations and delays there, but that could change because of the cold weather kari has been talking about. and the fact that so many people are traveling by air this weekend, aaa reports 7 million expected to hop on a plane over the next couple of days, and those are the numbers we saw prepandemic. flight aware is reporting just over 1,500 delays, and it was 800. cancelations, we're looking at about 1,400 nationwide. >> i am rebooked now, the last ticket to go fly into palm springs, but i don't have to get off the plane and then headed to denver, hopefully.

reported. let's go to the roadways where we are looking at the castro valley and the fog off the benicia bridge. there's debris in the road here because of a flat tire. >> thanks, mike. parts of the east bay started shaking last night, after a pair of minor quakes hit last night. the latest just before 6:30 yesterday evening. a 3.3 magnitude centered east of union city, and people felt it as north as concord and as south as san josé. that followed a jolt earlier in san leandro. a lot of people on edge along the humboldt county coast. >> i felt it shaking and i thought somebody was playing, and my buddy said we have an earthquake.

>> the room was shaking and i went outside to see my parents, and they were all panicking, oh, did you feel the earthquake? then the group chat started blowing up. >> 3,400 people are still without water after the deadly quake in humboldt county. you can see the damage in this video. take a look. two people have died as a result of the earthquake. two humboldt residents lost their dogs after their home caught on fire. they say they only left their home for 20 minutes and that was enough time for their home to catch completely on fire. >> i had to come out three times to get breath before i found them in the back bedroom and i carried them out but was not able to save them. >> their friends started a go fund me page to help out with their loss. they are not the only ones that lost their homes. and it means homes are too

damaged to enter if they are yellow or red tagged. the homes that do have water are being asked to boil it. >> it's important that you boil your water before you drink it. it will be sometime before we are able to test the system to make sure that it's clean. >> pg&e says there are only a few hundred homes still left without power, and the 1,300-foot long bridge along state route 211 that was closed because of the earthquake is open now, and caltrans has not reported when they expect all the lanes to open on the bridge. and the white house is opening the federal stockpile of tamiflu to respond to the heightened demand. >> for some, the relief cannot come high enough. >> marcus and ginger, good

warning expected to start at 6:00 a.m. this could cause flooding around beaches and low-lying areas. and the warning is expected to be in effect until 2:00 p.m. on sunday. meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking that weekend forecast. kari, what does it looks like up ahead this weekend? >> a lot of people have family coming to town and want to head to the coastline, and you want to be careful because of the gravitational pull, and it's making the waves come up higher and more dangerous to be along the low-lying areas. mostly mid to late morning. as you are going to santa cruz, it will be nice throughout the day, and we will have extremely low tides there in the afternoon, and the temperatures in the low to mid-60s over the next few days. if you are going to south lake tahoe over the weekend, looks nice. our mornings start out in the 20s there.

it's looking good, but next week we will have a couple big snowstorms headed that way. if you are staying at home this weekend maybe going to the 49ers game, it will be perfect. 68 degrees in the middle of the afternoon, and a mostly sunny sky and really warm weather headed for southern california if you are going to visit family in l.a., you will have temperatures in the upper 70s and even close to 80 degrees in some spots. we'll talk about what is ahead for us this weekend, and mike, you have a number of cars waiting at the toll plaza. >> yeah, the number has grown greatly. this is nothing compared to what we typically see, but compared to a few minutes ago. there's a crash around the metering lights, and that is what is slowing folks down. we will show backup here on the sensors. nothing dramatic, but anything on the bay bridge could tip the flow from the maze out in the area. a couple minor incidents. no problems for the other

it's the wrong one. also, i got the drought monitor update this morning. it's still shows the drought is consistent and persistent across the west and for the bay area, no change. still the exceptional drought that continues for the central valley as well as the southern sierra. we are in a severe to extreme drought here, so let's keep that in mind. looks like we will see improvements here as we go through the next couple of days. we are running minor deficits for oakland and san francisco, and a big deficit for santa rosa. we need four inches of rain to catch up for normal, and even after all we have captured so far, and we are in a slight surplus for san josé. a little rain coming through overnight, and we will wake up tomorrow morning and may see the streets are wet and most of it moves out before sunrise tomorrow. we are dry throughout the weekend. next week is when we are watching a couple storm sets

coming our way. starting on tuesday continuing through wednesday and another one on thursday that may linger into friday. this is what the computer models show right now, the potential of three and maybe four, five, even possibly up to seven inches of rain for the santa cruz mountains. that's all coming next week. that's something we will be watching and having more updates on. if you are going to the sierra this weekend, no snow all the way through christmas, and next week is when all the snow starts to come down and we could see several feet in the forecast. that's good for the drought and the rainfall deficits we have seen, but we will make it through the holiday forecast without any major weather. christmas day reaching 60 degrees and sunny, and morning temperatures in the low 40s. mike, do you have an update ort bay bridge toll plaza?

>> yeah, light traffic now, 37. fog across the area through the north bay, carquinez and benicia bridges. avoid the area of brimmer at carol and that's on the north end around irvington high school, and it's not involving the high school, as i understand. they have to clear that parameter but doesn't sound like there's danger for anybody. the south bay, very mild slowing. back to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now, four miles of trails will reopen at big basin redwood state park tomorrow. trail access has been limited after the entire park was burned down in 2020. the park reopened in july 2022 with several trails still under renovation. currently the park operates on a reservation-based system with the park offering more than 100 spots daily. a look at the top spots this
