savannah and hoda getting a jump start on their holiday celebrations. here we are three days out from christmas. >> maybe they are where they are supposed to be with this weather. >> that is true. that is our top story this morning. what's really been the not-so-perfect storm, a severe winter system hitting just as people head out for the holidays. you are looking at conditions in denver this morning. >> as that storm moves across the country, more than 110 million americans are under some winter alert. heavy snow, powerful winds. major threats for large swath of the country. >> all of it taking a toll on holiday travel. today and tomorrow expected to be the busiest getaway days. here's a live look at a busy interstate, 76 in philadelphia. >> at the airports, we are already seeing hundreds of flights being delayed or canceled. some of them happening here at chicago's o'hare airport. >> whether you are heading out the door, awaiting the arrival of loved ones or need to get out to the store for last-minute

shopping, fear not. we have you got covered this morning. we'll start with tom costello is watching all of it from reagan national airport. tom, you were in chicago for us yesterday. you flew to d.c. overnight. you have a unique perspective here. how are the airports looking? >> reporter: well, they're full and getting fuller. we got out of chicago just because we didn't want to take a chance with the storm coming in, didn't want to get stuck there. as much as i love all of my friends and family in chicago. but it is among those airports, both o'hare and midway, where we are seeing a growing number of cancelations and delays. look at the list at this very important. 1,200 flight cancellations. that is building. chicago, o'hare, midway. then we have denver, kansas city and st. louis among the cities most affected. as this snow starts to fly, the number of cancellations and

delays will snowball through the day. howling and blowing across the plains and headed into the midwest, the monster winter storm blinding road traffic, blasting minneapolis, and making a beeline for chicago with o'hare and midway airports in the cross hairs. >> have you de-iced that one yesterday? we were told the captain called for ice accumulation. >> reporter: de-icing critical across a big chunk of the country as airports and airlines try to keep operations moving as long as possible. today and tomorrow were scheduled to be the busiest departure travel days. now this. >> this is not the hiccup you don't need this time of year. >> mother nature's timing could have been better. but we're prepared. we've got 15,000 new employees. they've all been trained. >> this is flight 1865 service to miami. hi there. good morning. >> reporter: nationwide, passenger volume is rivaling

2019 levels. brook nelson and her daughter heading to california. >> we hope we get there before the weather gets there. >> reporter: to keep the system moving, the faa command center has opened military airspace along the coast. >> having gotten through such a great, smooth thanksgiving week in terms of travel, including the busiest travel day since before covid, things went so well. this time around, unfortunately, it's not going to be as smooth because of this weather. >> reporter: the expert advice in the air or on the roads. leave early and have a backup plan. and a dose of optimism doesn't hurt. >> you will fly right through this stuff? >> reporter: yes. yes, we will. >> reporter: if anybody knows about flying conditions it's that guy. we told you yesterday the irls are waiving the change fees to get people to change the tickets

flying today or friday. at this point the flights are full. if you are able to change flights you might have to wait until the storm passes through. we are watching trains. amtrak had to cancel trips. that will affect rail traffic, as well. back to you. >> tom costello at reagan national. thank you, tom. maggie vespa is in belvedere, illinois, where snow is already coming down. and the temperature is falling fast. maggie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, sheinelle. this is getting down to zero hour here in the midwest to hit the road for the holidays. you can see the flakes are starting to fall in illinois. an hour west of chicago. just along i-90 where driving conditions are good but we know

that likely won't hold. millions across the region wakinging up to blizzard warnings. ohio expected to get up to a foot of snow and parts of michigan up to two feet. we saw footage of nebraska with whiteout conditions and then south dakota. hundreds overnight trapped in the cars having to be rescued. speaking of warming shelters across the country including the massive arena that is the denver coliseum and happening in case of region to region power outages due to the storm. preparations there. the timing of the storm could not worse. people have the delivery of last-minute christmas gifts and

talked to all the carriers saying they are cautiously optimistic the deliveries should make it on time. obviously this is a huge time for christmas deliveries. 100 million packages shipped per day the last week before christmas. we talked to amazon, u.p.s. and fedex. they have teams of meteorologists rerouting around the worst conditions of the storm to get them there on time. they have accounted for that in the delivery dates and then the drivers are trained to drive in inclement weather as long as it's safe. again sign up for alerts and as the storm makes the way east. >> it is a challenge. thank you, maggie. >> all right. dylan is in for al. she's tracking the timing of

this massive system on the move. good to have you back. how are we looking? >> it's a monster storm. you can see all the winter weather alerts. upper midwest, great lanes and east as well. several blizzard warnings too. not so much because of an extreme amount of snow but because of very gusty winds. 40 to 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts. here's the situation. we have this arctic front bringing snow to the midwest. behind it, it is brutally cold. windchills down to 30 to 40 degrees below zero. we have moisture streaming from the south. these two storms are going to combine and bring us our monster storm. we are looking for a widespread two to four inches of snow it doesn't seem like much, but with gusts 40 to 60 miles per hour, it reduces visibility as it tosses the snow into the winds. off michigan, lake ontario, western new york too, two to three feet of snow it's that lake enhancement

the wind and the blowing snow will make it treacherous on the roads and make a nightmare at the airports too as we go through today and tomorrow, peak wind gusts 50 miles in detroit, over 60 miles per hour in buffalo. boston, 56-mile-per-hour wind gusts. we will also see up to two to three inches of rain up and down the northeast. not only will we see regular flooding but coastal flooding. when you have the wind off the water. we could see extreme flooding in boston too a lot of factors setting up shop here on the backside of the storm, we are looking at some of the coldest air we have seen with windchills down to 20 to 30 degrees at least below zero. >> all right dylan, we'll come back to you in just a second. another major story this morning. that defiant wartime visit to washington by the president of ukraine. chief white house correspondent peter alexander is here with more >> sheinelle, craig, good morning to you this was a powerful moment last night. president zelenskyy, remember, just 24 hours removed from the battlefield, punctuating his trip to washington with what was a personal appeal for more

collapsed crypto giant ftx, returned to the united states to face federal charges hours after agreeing to extradition from the bahamas. nbc's gabe gutierrez is here with the latest. gabe, good morning >> reporter: craig, good morning. 30-year-old sam bankman-fried is accused of one of the larges financial crimes in u.s. history. he is set to appear in a new york courtroom for the first time as two of his associates plead guilty to related charges. this morning, the one-time crypto king, sam bankman-fried is back in the u.s. after agreeing to be extradited from the bahamas. overnight his plane landing in westchester, new york, outside new york city. the former billionaire faces charges including wire fraud and money laundering stemming from the dramatic collapse of his massive crypto exchange ftx. >> he is now in fbi custody. he will appear before a judge in this court as soon as possible >> reporter: billions of dollars

vanished when the crypto fir imploded last month. he denies that ftx misappropriated client funds when it made lanes to anothe one of his companies, alameda, a hedge fund >> i made a lot of mistakes or things i would give anything to be able to do over again i didn't ever try to commit fraud on anyone. >> reporter: his extradition comes at two former associates have pleaded guilty to related charges. the u.s. attorney says ftx co-founder gary wang and caroline ellison former head of alameda bot contributed to the collapse. >> both have pled guilty to the charges and they are both cooperating with the southern district of new york >> reporter: overnight wang's attorney says gary has accepted responsibility for his actions and takes seriously, his obligations as a cooperating witness. the u.s. attorney with a warning to others involved in wrongdoing

canceled right now we've also got midway cancellations running at 24% these numbers are expected to grow midday in chicago denver, 17% of flights canceled. we have kansas city and atlanta and st. louis all of those airports right now experiencing delays and cancellations as the storm rolls through the country and then, of course, there's the ripple effect. we wanted to tell you also that the faa has opened up military airspace along the coast, the east coast in particular that really helps open up the highways and the skies to keep things moving. as you saw in the video, we have a lot of airports now that are de-icing planes. a high priority when you have a freezing rain or snow environment, they have to de-ice the planes i checked amtrak, also, guys amtrak is also canceling routes in the midwest because of the blowing snow and the wind. lincoln service is affected. we have the missouri river runner is affected

but the results aren't always what you want. scammers are using misleading ads to steal your personal information and your money, too. is the company on the other end of your search results really who they say they are? >> reporter: ed and his wife told chicago station wmaq they tried to upgrade their united airlines ticket. after googling the airline, they clicked a call button in one of the top search results someone who said his name was daniel on the other end. >> my wife says you work for united he said yes, i do. >> reporter: they bought the upgrade, giving the information to daniel. >> he said now don't go rushing to look at your charges. you're not going to understand everything on there. >> reporter: a major red flag. the couple checked their bank statement to find a $454 fee from an independent travel agency >> i did a search on my phone for united airlines, and i called the number that came up >> reporter: a similar story on the west coast >> tonight the warning we're sharing applies to almost

everyone >> reporter: alice klein explaining to kntv she unknowingly called the same called the same agency flu you -- through united the change wouldn't have cost her a cent but the travel agency charged $3,900 >> it seemed very unreal this could happen >> reporter: a google spokesperson confirming the travel agency purchased an ad to appear at the top of the search results for united airlines. the search engine removing the ad saying it violated misrepresentation policies advertising generates big business for google. it recently earned $54.5 billion. it also creates the constant challenge of making sure safety practices can keep up. how are scammers able to get their ads to the top of the search results >> companies will actually pay more money to be sure that their ad actually falls taller in the search order so therefore more
