we're live with an update on the work being done ahead of a make-or-break deadline. a new round of rain is on the horizon. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the conditions and when you may need your umbrella. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. here we go, friday morning. good morning to you. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm ginger conejero saab in for laura garcia. first, a look at the forecast. kari, we've been experiencing cold weather. now it looks more pleasant. it does. we still can't burn the fireplace to try to save the warm-up. a spare the air alert has been issued for the north bay as well as the coast and the bay and santa clara valley where the air quality is most unhealthy. we will see the smoggy conditions for us to start with some fog drifting around parts of the bay area. it does get worse as you travel outside of the bay area to the

central valley. for us visibility is five to six miles and we're headed for sunshine with highs in the low to mid-60s. talk about our nice christmas forecast coming up. mike, you are updating a couple of issues. >> we had a couple of issues. the chp report, they're changing here. the off ramp is clear of the earlier issue involving fender-bender and up here an earlier pickup truck fire. they're hooking it up to clear it. the fire is out. no injuries. great news. northbound 680 is ready to open up any minute or at least that's the schedule. it's still on the caltrans grid. we do see some folks taking 84 in either direction to get past the closure. there's a little build coming off 84 as well as out of the altamont pass. there's no problem. no slowing out of the altamont. light traffic. >> thanks, mike. developing right now disgraced ftx crypto exchange founder sam bankman-fried may be returning to the bay area as soon as today.

he's awaiting trial or will be at his family home 3,000 miles away from where he's expected to fight federal criminal charges. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live for us. we're only guessing here but this is probably the last thing neighbors expected even a few weeks ago. >> reporter: this is not what it looks like when we go home to our parents' homes. there is a barricade leading up to sam bankman-fried's parents' house here in palo alto not necessarily to keep us away exclusively but there is so much public interest in this case as well. the disgraced ftx cryptocurrency founder was freed on a $250 million bond, the highest in u.s. history. he is fitted with a gps ankle monitor and will await trial here at his parents' home in palo alto. they are both stanford law professors. he also had to surrender his passport.

he is accused of misusing $8 billion of money deposited into ftx. the now collapsed cryptocurrency exchange he co-founded. two executives already pleaded guilty to fraud charges and we're told they're cooperating with the government. >> sam bankman-fried was involved in the crypto, let's be honest and transparent, if i lived anywhere near sam bankman-fried's parents, i would get some cameras. >> reporter: sam bankman-fried is expected to go before a judge on january 3 for an arraignment and he is expected to be back in the bay area as early as today. we don't know if we'll see him arrive. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." and this story continues to develop. you can get the latest updates on our website. we also have more on the history

of the company and the unfolding investigation. this is all at nbcbayarea.com. breaking overnight word from japan and south korea about a new round of missiles fired by north korean forces. leaders say two missiles were fired, each landed in ocean waters following military drills conducted this week by the u.s. and south korean warplanes. north korea's unusually high rate of tests this year may be meant to gain more concessions in the event of new negotiations with the west. new details overnight on the january 6th committee who released its final report details the panel's 18-month-long investigation into the insurrection. "today in the bay's" brie jackson has been covering the hearings and the committee's work. brie, 845 pages long. can you break this down for us? >> reporter: yeah, good morning, ginger. a lot of pages here and a lot to try to unravel, but one of the

key conclusions we know from the january 6th committee's report, the committee has included that former president trump was largely to blame for the attack at the u.s. capitol. in an eight chapter report the house committee investigating the january 6 attack revealed details of their findings laying out proof former president trump planned to urge his supporters to march to the u.s. capitol, outlining a fake elector scheme, and saying it was all part of a multistep effort deadvised and driven by donald trump to overturn the election. >> no one is above the law, even a former president. >> reporter: the former president took to social media blasting the report as a witch-hunt. house speaker nancy pelosi praising the committee's work. >> we have a vital road map in ensuring justice will be done. >> reporter: the report lays out 11 recommendation including overhauling election laws. that's a step congress is taking

as part of its massive spending package the $1.7 trillion bill in aid for ukraine and funds federal agencies through september. it is agreed to. >> reporter: a house vote helps prevent a government shutdown before christmas. >> i hope this holiday season will drain the poison that's infected and poisoned us against one another. >> reporter: democrats will hold the majority in the senate. and they recommend barring president trump from holding office ever again. >> it got attention when cassidy hutchinson was actually seen at one of the committee hearings. the report now also involves or also includes her transcript. what does it say? >> reporter: yeah, ginger, in

this transcript cassidy hutchinson claims one of former president trump's lawyers suggested she downplay her knowledge of the events and with hold information from the january 6 committee telling her the less the committee thinks she knows the better. >> thank you so much, brie jackson. a lot to unpack in those reports. 5:07 for you right now and happening today a final farewell. this is for a south bay college student, a football player, who died trying to make his way home for the holidays. brian rosa attended san jose high and city college before transferring to kansas. his family says last week he got caught in a snowstorm and crashed his car in colorado. his passion was to make it to the nfl and become a counselor. his funeral takes place today at noon in san jose. for the third time in the past month, a flaring incident at the martinez refinery. the latest one happening late

last night. contra costa health services tweeted it was brief and no risk to the surrounding community. when the latest flaring happened two weeks ago the refinery company explained it was due to an equipment malfunction. that incident was also not believed to be a health risk, but now the county is investigating. happening today four mimes of trails will reopen at big base. nearly the entire park was burned down in the 2020 fire. now the park reopened in july of 2022 with several trails still under renovation. currently the park operates on a renovation based system with the park offering more than 100 spots daily. happening now if you're on the coast this week, keep an eye on the water. you might see what's called a king tide. that's when high tides are unusually intense. it happens a few times a year and the warning is in effect

until sunday. taking a live look for you in downtown san jose. this is christmas in the park. the tree beautifully lit up. meteorologist kari hall has a look at the forecast. also across the country it is not like it is here. we're going to be able to call our family and say, hey, it's nice and sunny here. it will be in the 60s all weekend. and then we look at the big storms that are heading out east and moving across the east coast as well with this significant storm system right now starting out as rain changing over to snow to the new york area as the temperatures will be dropping, but we've also been seeing subzero temperatures for parts of the upper midwest and even teens dipping all the way down to parts of the gulf coast with those wind chills that have been brutal even going into christmas day. highs in the lower 20s for spots like kansas city and sioux city.

we're still seeing bitterly cold temperatures will. mike, you are giving us a look at lower gas prices. getaway gas prices. through the south bay maybe heading south at diamond gas and mart on story road. it leads our list at $3.74, the south bay's cheapest. considerably higher than the bay area's cheapest we saw before. in san francisco this is a treat, san francisco county doesn't usually show prices lower than most of the others but it's $3.37 the exxon on bryant street. a couple other options below $3.50 so check with gasbuddy.com. the cheapest across your viewing area is at $3.19 in concord on grant street. we've talked about that in the past as well. that's the bay area's best but it's not the state's best. a nice, easy drive through our urban areas. 680 through sunol there's fog

concerns about a recession mounts. investors are worried that more interest rate hikes by the federal reserve could force the economy into a down turn, the dow dropping 350 points. it has been down as much as 800 points during the session. personal income and new home sales. concerns the app reports user data to the chinese government. tiktok is owned by byte dance in beijing. it has been blocked in several schools including the university of oklahoma and auburn. students can still access the app on their personal devices, tiktok says the bans are based on unfounded falsehoods. and free two-hour delivery from

sensitive to the pollutants we've seen recently limit your time outside especially in the north bay, the coast and the bay as well as santa clara valley and no wood burning today. now taking a look at visibility for much of the bay area. it's not so bad. it's been a little bit lower for parts of the delta. as you move over the altamont pass into the central valley, visibility near zero. a nice one today as we head for the low to mid-60s in the south bay. mike, you have a b.a.r.t. delay? a report of maybe as much as a ten-minute delay, an equipment problem. no reasonable for alarm. just like all of us, we're trying to get going and b.a.r.t. has trouble for trains. coming over in the commute direction out of oakland we see lighter traffic flow but more cars than the last half hour. we're looking at -- i don't know if the metering lights will be turned on. if they are it will be just before 6:00. look how light the traffic flow is. no slowing, just some fog with

that yellow. back to you. >> a good time to be out. thanks, mike. one of union square's busiest stores may be on the verge of experiencing a strike. >> we're talking about macy's flagship san francisco. "today in the bay's" thom jensen is live in the city. that's where union workers are promising to start picketing in just a matter of hours. thom? >> reporter: good morning. we received word that contract talks did break down between macy's and those workers represented by the local united food and commercial workers union, a union president told us that workers want better pay, better staffing levels and more affordable health care benefits. he says the company only offered a $1 pay bump over a three-year period and it would not budge on issues of staffing, seniority and affordable health care. the union employees plan to begin a two-day strike at 9:00 this morning and they're asking shoppers to boycott macy's

across the bay area. shoppers said they sympathize with the workers. >> san francisco is expensive. >> i did not know that or i maybe would have shopped somewhere else. >> reporter: union members met yesterday to reject the company's latest offer. 93% of the 400 workers voted in favor of that two-day strike at the union square store for today and tomorrow. we did reach out to macy's and they have not responded for comment. thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thom, thank you. this morning five bay area counties are entering cdc's high community virus tier. those include alameda, contra costa, san francisco, santa clara and solano counties all moved up from the medium or yellow tier to the highest or worst tier designated as red. the cdc recommends indoor masking. marin, napa, san mateo and

sonoma are rated in the yellow tier. and new this morning the air we breathe is a big concern in the age of covid, flu and rsv. like restaurants that receive letter grades, buildings are now receiving a seal of approval for their indoor air quality. we have more from "today in the bay's" bob redell. >> reporter: a biotech company in pleasanton has developed a harmless dna aerosol that stimulates the release of an airborne pathogen like covid or flu. sensors track that mist and determine whether or not the ventilation and air conditioning is filtering out those particles. >> the settings they had precovid. >> reporter: or allowing them to hover. >> air is invisible so people don't know what is happening. we make that visible to them on what's going and how their systems are performing. >> reporter: they advise clients on how to improve ventilation so they can earn the first of its

the rio dell area. crews are doing final gas safety checks and making repairs to damaged pipelines. water has been restored, but health leaders are urging people to boil it before cinking it. this is until tests can be run. the earthquake killed two people injuring 17 others. at least 60 homes have been deemed unsafe. let's take a live look at sfo where winter weather elsewhere is having a ripple effect on flight plans. so far nearly 6,000 flights around the country have been canceled. so far at sfo that number is over 40. now with airports packed so tight. expect to experience long lines at airport security. the tsa has recommendations to make before you quickly get to your gate. of course it begins with making sure you lose all containers carrying liquids over 3.5 ounces. as for christmas presents -- >> if you're bringing your gifts for your family and friends with

you, we just ask you don't wrap them in your fancy paper before we get to see them because they may alarm and we will have to open that wrapping. that is just disappointing. if you bring it in a gift bag, we can look in the bag and clear anything we need to that way that would be helpful. >> the tsa reminds everyone to leave enough time to move through security and check your flight status before you leave for the airport. happening tonight san francisco police will conduct a special holiday dui enforcement. more patrols being started tonight at 7:00 p.m. and continuing until 3:00 a.m. sf police calling it a saturation patrol. the city will have revolving police looking at potentially impaired drivers. sf police also say marijuana was more previous dent among impaired drivers than alcohol. let's take a live look outside this morning in san francisco. you can see there the low-lying

clouds for us this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those temperatures for us. it should be a nice warm-up today. it will be a warm-up for this afternoon, and there's a lot going on around the bay area for the weekend. you may be helpeded to levi's stadium for tomorrow and the 49ers game will be perfect. you do need a jacket but it's going to be nice and sunny. a breezy wind and the temperature 66 degrees. headed for the upper 60s as we go to the end of the game. if you have family coming in town take a drive down pacific coast highway for some great pictures. watch out for some of the fog drifting by. temperatures in the mid-60s today and tomorrow upper 60s, 70 degrees on christmas day f. you're going to tahoe this weekend, a nice, smooth drive there as well as heading back for the weekend but next week is when we'll start to see all of the wintry weather moving in and so we're looking at sunshine and temperatures in the upper 40s and morning temperatures in the

mid-20s. going to l.a. this weekend, wow, look at these temperatures. it's going to be so nice reaching into the mid-70s for tomorrow and on christmas day 77 degrees with sunshine. maybe even wearing some shorts on christmas day. it will be cooler in sonoma valley with our highs reaching into the mid-50s throughout the weekend. we will see the clouds lingering there and also some cold mornings ahead so we're looking at once again some quiet weather around the bay area. now as we go into next week, we're going to be tracking several storms moving in, and i'll have a look at that coming up in a few minutes. but as far as what we will see here nice and quiet seeing all the cold weather breaking out east. mike, you have a new problem for san jose? we're talking about 87. overall lighter traffic. here 87 the off ramp right near the off ramp for capital expressway. a car that lost its tire. it sounds like it's on its rim.

i don't know because a flat tire or factors like a pothole so we're watching for this. the car is it still on north 87 as the volume starts to build. again, shouldn't be as significant this morning but we're still watching the critical time for that part of the commute. people getting away focusing on christmas eve tomorrow and christmas is on sunday. folks may be making a getaway. yesterday afternoon hearing about crowds starting after the noon hour through sunol and, remember, as early as 2:00 p.m. if it's so crowded on 680 north they will activate the metering lights. just a note for folks who are not used to that, they only turned on the metering lights a few weeks ago. you may find some water along the marin coastal areas. back to you. >> thanks a lot, mike. california rolls out a new ban for tesla cars in self-driving mode. why drivers will have one less

what's ahead next week coming up. you have lights in the south bay. i have lights in the north bay. over the hill everything moves smoothly. not as much fog as in previous days. probably not as much traffic. a crash on the bay bridge during thanksgiving is part of a federal investigation into tesla's self-driving system. nine people were injured including a child. we're learning the driver was reportedly using the self-driving software. the national highway transportation administration is looking into the role tesla's autopilot and self-driving played in at least 41 crashes that resulted in 19 deaths.

we have reached out for comment but have not heard back. the company is banned from advertising its vehicles as full self-driving. the change is part of a new law signed by governor gavin newsom. >> we know inflation is making it more expensive to feed our families. an eye opening look at how hard it is to stretch that dollar. the amount of food last year and on the right what the same $25 donation provides this year. they say that's because food is more expensive. food banks are seeing an 80% increase for assistance over prepandemic times. because more people need help fewer people can give. financial donations are down 37%.

we also have the coastal flood advisories. our temperatures are not so bad. it's also going to be fairly comfortable for what we typically see for this time of year. in fremont we're headed for 64 degrees. martinez, that fog lingers longer so temperatures are slightly cooler. we can see tomorrow's temperatures will be in the low 60s for much of the bay area. and then on christmas day upper 60s even close to 70 degrees, north bay temperatures in the low to mid-60s. a pretty nice weekend for us. next week the storms will be coming in, an atmospheric river that will keep it active as we go all throughout the week and even into next weekend. so here's the impacts as that storm comes in, the wind will be very strong.

wind gusts may reach 40 to 60 miles an hour and then the wind calms down but the rain continues. in total next week we could see about 3 to 7 inches of rain across the bay area and for the sierra looking a little bit more tricky there because of the rain/snow levels that will be fluctuating. this will be a warmer storm. but we may see about 3 to 5 feet of snow in some of the upper elevations. we'll have more on that as we get closer. are enjoying a perfect weekend. it's not too warm, not too cold. for san francisco it will reach into the upper 50s and low 60s for the weekend. a disabled vehicle in san jose. even though it's light traffic,

welcome back. you're watching "today in the bay." a small plane crash in southern california. watch this plane descend rapidly to the beach and flip over. it crashed into the beach just south of the santa monica pier yesterday afternoon. it's not known what caused the crash. they were rushed to the hospital. their conditions are also not known at this time.
