country and temperatures going from the 50s to single digits in just a few hours. many wondering if they will make it to the final destination for christmas. we'll have everything you need to know. holiday gathering fears. good news from the cdc that flu numbers are dropping, butting -- but health officials warning the numbers could go back up. deadly mall shooting. chaos overnight inside the mall of america which was forced to close in the middle of one of the busiest shopping days of the year after gunfire rang out. all that plus santa's on his way. the federal agency that tracks the big guy's travels is ready for all-nighter to make sure santa arrives safely at homes around the world. >> we see him on the radar right away.

customers still without power this morning as the bitter cold settles in. it could be a long and cold christmas. we will get the forecast in a minute. we want to begin with shaquille brewster in benton harbor, michigan. shaq, it sure does look cold there. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the thing is nearly everyone east of the rockies are dealing with frigid temperatures this morning. others are dealing with what you are seeing here right now. the heavy snow. the heavy snow and the strong winds that make you lose your memory a little bit as folks struggle to make it to their destinations this holiday weekend. this morning, a christmas eve arctic blast is pummeling the eastern u.s. buffalo battered with historic blizzard. wind gusts exceeding 70 miles an hour. >> there are cars 35 or 40 feet

charlotte and memphis to milwaukee. alaska airlines cancelling flights. and across the nation, 6,000 delays. >> i'm sad. it will be nighttime and christmas will be over. >> reporter: after three days of canceled flights and travel frustration, sydney joined strangers and rented a car and drove through the night from nashville to indiana. making it home in time for the christmas weekend reunion. and believe it or not, some people are braving the elements voluntarily. across the lake, the chicago bears are taking on the buffalo bills. kickoff temperature is expected to feel like 9 degrees below zero. guys, if you are looking for tickets, they crashed. they are about $10. >> that's dedicated fans. >> they pay you to go to the game. >> shaq, your ski goggles and

wind whipping behind you say it all. go get warm. let's bring in somara theodore for the latest. the feels-like temperature this morning was 6 below zero. >> barely made it into the building this morning. it still looks like we are experiencing the cold weather through christmas day. you know the snow component is with us. blizzard like conditions right along the great lakes bringing heavy snow there. we have zero visibility in areas toward cleveland and buffalo. they are continuing to see that power house of lake-effect snow push snow on the shoreline. the thing impacting so many more people is the cold weather. dangerously cold. 158 million people impacted. windchills from billings to florida. wind gusts at 61 miles per hour in buffalo. that is contributing to the blizzard conditions and lower visibility. the other thing we have to be

concerned about is the power outages. we could see downed trees heading into christmas day. that could cause power outages. let's look at the numbers. kansas city. how are you doing? minus 13 degrees for windchill there. houston, feels like 10 this morning. in chicago, minus 18. new york is minus 5. a lot of us feeling the negative numbers. the chill sets up -- i'm sorry, stays around through the weekend. sunday morning with temperatures in the 20s and teens. look at the bitterly cold weather from the arctic and sticking around today and tomorrow. highs in the 20s and 30s. for christmas day, temperatures in philly, 27 degrees. atlanta, feeling like 25. who is heading to florida? cold this time of year in the low 40s. we get reprieve. we warm up in the 50s this week. >> somara, thank you. we will have the few minutes.

we turn to the tripledemic and the encouraging news. the government reporting the flu is starting to decline in some areas. officials warning that holiday get togethers could send the numbers soaring again. sam brock has more. >> reporter: the worst in a decade is showing signs of improvement. the cdc report citing flu activity is high, but declining in most areas. gains are fragile especially with the holidays. >> are we out of the woods yet or is americas yus? >> we are not out of the woods yet. we may have more spread for the viruses and could tick up again. >> reporter: rsv cases plateaued, but covid and deaths and p hospitalizations are on the rise.

now many are taking extra steps to protect their loved ones. >> we haven't been going out that much lately. just try to stay safer. >> reporter: in the flu season where vaccinations are below benchmarks, the doctor says there is value to get protection now. >> it is not too late to get vaccinated. don't linger. >> reporter: the rush of flu cases against the back drop of empty store shelves for basic medication. >> we don't have tylenol or motrin for kids. it is concerning. parents, kids, they can't walk out of the pharmacy without medicine. >> reporter: at some pharmacies, you might not see empty shelves. this is all of the pain relief medication they have left. as we move over right here, this is the collection of kids medication. three or four boxes. families now scooping up what medicine they can as they hit the road for the holidays. sam brock, nbc news, miami.

>> sam, thanks so much. let's get to dr. vin gupta. dr. gupta, we know you are on the frontlines in seattle. we are seeing covid numbers going up in places. what are the biggest concerns as we head into the next week of holiday time? >> peter and kristen, good morning. great to see you both. we are still very much in a difficult spot here. i would say the first half of cold and flu, we see rsv cases peak. flu a in particular for viewers out there. get the flu shot. a lot of benefits from it. to the point made earlier, flu a cases at the highest cases we have seen in over a decade in cold and flu season. covid we expect to peak in mid-january. a difficult time here as we

enter the second half of cold and flu season. >> and the issue is people are gathering this holiday season. what are the ways that people can gather given all of the data you are seeing and what you are seeing on the frontlines in the safe way? >> i'm glad you is asked that question. absolutely safe to gather and keep your plans. if you are sick -- think or act how you would before the pandemic -- try not to travel. if you travel, wear a mask for your protection. go to covid.gov for a free rapid test. great to test yourself as we have been talking about the last three years before you see somebody medically high risk. and as a medical establishment, you need to think what if or what now? if you are caring for somebody at risk, standing prescriptions for tamiflu or paxil. if you are sick, you don't have

a navigating maze. >> dr. gupta, i guess a lot of people are enjoying the holiday and not looking for a place to get a vaccine or booster right now. flu shots and covid boosters. it is not too late to get those for families who are concerned with the way things are going? >> that's correct. takes about two weeks for full protection. still very much in the thick of this with the second half of cold and flu season. for parents, if your kid is not vaccinated, there are other issues like strep throat we are hearing about. if you get the flu shot, it helps your kid and your immune system fight off other threats like strep throat. protect against flu and other threats. >> that's good to know. good information. dr. gupta, we hope it is a decent holiday weekend for you and all those on the front lines. we thank you very much.

good morning, thank you for joining us on this saturday, december 24th. i'm kira klapper. retail workers will go back on strike today at macy's in san francisco's union square. more than 400 workers are employed there. yesterday dozens of them were picketing in front of both of the store's entrances. they voted for the strike thursday night after labor negotiations broke down. the union says its workers want better pay, safer conditions and more affordable health care. they say macy's is refusing to budge on some of the issues so the workers say they had no choice but to strike.

>> i've been bargaining labor contracts for 30 years. this is a fortune 200 company. they're the companiest company -- cheapest company i've ever had to bargain with. >> macy's issued this statement reading in part, at macy's or top priority is to ensure the safety of our colleagues and customers. our macy's union square store remains open to customers and employees. the workers say they expect to be back to work on monday. this morning five bay area counties are entering the cdc's high community virus tier. those include alameda, contra costa, san francisco, santa clara, and solano counties. they all moved up from the medium or yellow tier to the highest or worst tier designated as red. the cdc recommends indoor masking in red areas. marin, napa, san mateo and sonoma are rated in the yellows here. cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our christmas eve

lines. a 19-year-old man dead after the shooting at the mall of america in minnesota last night we sent shoppers scrambling. someone pulled on the a gun after an argument in the nordstrom store. a los angeles jury found rapper lanez guilty of shooting megan thee stallion. she accused her of shooting her in the foot in 2022. lanez faces up to 22 years in prison and could be deported to canada. and ayed sayed, whose murder conviction was tossed and now working at georgetown university. past work will involve supporting a class where students investigate wrongful convictions and help free innocent people. this morning, the royal

strike today at the macy's in san francisco's union square. more than 400 workers are employed there. yesterday dozens of them picketed in front of both entrances. they voted for the strike thursday night after labor negotiations broke down. the union says its workers want better pay, safer conditions and more affordable health care. they say macy's is refusing to budge on some of those issues so the workers say they had no choice but to strike. >> i've been bargaining labor contracts for 30 years. this is a fortune 200 company. they are the cheapest company i've ever had to bargain with, and i've bargained with a lot of large employers. >> macy's issued this statement reading in part, at macy's our top priority is to ensure the safety of our colleagues and customers. our macy's union square store remains open to customers and colleagues. the workers say they expect to be back at work monday. turning now to covid levels,
