hi, everybody. merry christmas. it is xfinity sports sunday, dave feldman with rod brooks. 49ers didn't need to come from behind yesterday. they were dominant. let's go to levi's stadium, where on christmas eve they were very impressive against the washington commanders. brock purdy, ray ray mcleod and the vest history. the niners take a 7-0 lead. later, taylor heineki. tied at 7 at the half. third quarter, third and four. purdy to george kittel. oh, kittel is coming in to himself again. 49ers lead 14-7.
9:09 pm
commanders go for it and come up short. that defense is good. best in the nfl. next drive, second and nine, purdy once again finds kittel. how about, rod, how good kittel is after he catch it is? i mean, just always finding more yards. first and ten, heineki, deep pass to mclauren. 51 yards, commanders inside the ten. second and goal, heineki, got time. there's mclauren. touchdown. 49ers lead cut to 21-14. heineki is picked off by jimmie ward. there's that good defense again. and heineki is done for the day. later that quarter, carson wentz, now in for the commanders. wentz to samuel. up 30-20. ensuing drive, fourth and three,
9:10 pm
purdy to kittel. and george down at the one. so next play, give it to christian mccaffrey. up the middle. 49ers win 37-20. they improve to 11 and 4. they have won eight straight games. so i ask you, rod brooks quite simply, are the 49ers the best team in football right now? >> oh, without a doubt. you see all of their stars on both sides of the game. and the missing piece? the niners have themselves a quarterback who fits exactly what he wants to do. he makes throws in the tight windows. he can get himself out of trouble. can he throw on the move. the only thing that this young man does not have is experience. but brock purdy's getting that
9:11 pm
experience every single week. >> brock purdy is our ball carrier of the game, presented by manscaped. trusted by 7 million men worldwide. so i will follow up on that conversation, rod. the body of work for him in the nfl is very small. played in college, iowa state. mr. irrelevant. he's not invisible anymore. and there's certainly tape on this guy. can he continue to perform at this level? >> i think he can. he's passed all of the tests that have been administered to him. can he handle blitz? can he handle coming in on the short week? yes, he can do all of that. he as not rushed.
9:12 pm
he's under control. and guys like kittel are always open, but you have to have the trigger man to get it to him. and that's what purdy's been payable to do. what they thought trey lance could be if trey lance were to stay healthy and his growth were to accelerate quickly like what we're seeing with brock purdy. he's what they hoped jimmy garoppalo would be. he's checking all of those boxes. and he's helping the niners win very big games. he's not a passenger on this ride. he's one of the bus drivers. >> rod obviously a very long time, very talented radio host. if he was still doing his radio show, joe blow from oakland would call in.
9:13 pm
>> in my estimation, i think there would be an unspoken quarterback competition, but it would be brock purdy's to lose. trey lance will get every opportunity, but brock purdy would be the leader in that not-yet-happening quarterback competition. >> in that hypothetical. >> very much hypothetical. >> brought to you by zenni. defensive player of the year.
9:14 pm
would you vote for nick bosa? >> absolutely. he surpasses with flying colors. i think bosa is going to at a minimum tie for the niners single season sack record. i could see bosa doing that, and it would happen within the confines of a 16 games. >> speaking of bosa, special delivery, presented by amism ci's. they give up 15 points, three points in the nfl. buffalo's next, two points worse in a game. jimmie ward said he was not disappointed with this performance. fifth consecutive season he's got over a hundred plus. when you give up 20 and your defense is very disappointed, that's how good this defense is. >> they put them in a burr
9:15 pm
burrlap sack and beat it over and over again. mooney ward is a true shutdown corner that led to big plays and to some trouble in the first half of the eventual win by the niners. they get that cleaned up. coverage on the back end. they have no weaknesses. >> rod, how to you compare it, and dante asked us, he's biassed to like 2011, 2012 when they had willis, bowman, dante. >> it was perfect a lot because the offenses were not as good. this team has as much pressure on the defense. but dante said a couple weeks ago after the beating of brady and the buccaneers that he thought this this was the best niner defense in the history of the franchise. >> oh, you got him in a rare honest moment. i've heard him say, i don't know, feldy, we were pretty

9:20 pm
would be fantastic. do they need it in order for them to get to win the super bowl? absolutely not. this niner team is very confident about who they are. they are clearly the most dangerously complete team. >> we're biassed here. >> eagles' run game, i need to see a little bit more from it and give all credit to the eagles. they are a good team. you win 13 games, you play who's in front of you. you win 13 games. they look good doing it. in terms of what you need in the playoffs, which is a dominant defense, a run game and creative play calling, this is a niner team full of all of that. >> we'll take a break. we'll come back and put a bow on
