right now at 5:00, heavy rains. live team coverage timing out your full microclimate weather alert and when you can expect to see rain in your neighborhood. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. and a good tuesday morning to you. a wet start to our morning. i'm marcus washington. >> it sure is. it's soggy out there. i'm laura garcia. the storm already causing some issues across the bay area. in fact, we have new video to show you just in to our newsroom. there's a rock slide in the north bay. it happened early this morning on highway 116 just south of guerneville. >> a live look at fairfax creek where we're monitoring water levels there. so in the past this creek has raised some serious concerns and triggered a lot of flood warnings over debris building up there.
5:01 am
we have live team coverage. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is in the south bay tracking the steps you can take to just make sure you are ready for any possible flooding. >> and mike inouye is tracking the slick roads we're talking about. we're going to see a lot of rain in the next coming days as well. meteorologist vianey arana is tracking this atmospheric river event. and this is the first storm we will see in a series of them, as you mentioned, in the upcoming week. we have our storm ranger scanning the skies. petaluma seeing some of the light rain, light to moderate at times. where you see the yellow and orange glow is where we see some of the heavier pockets. zooming us in closer to san francisco you can see really coming down right now in hayward, danville, some that have rain in the bay area, across the region. san jose we'll start to notice that picking up. why? this line of showers here will continue to push on through. that will create some strong pockets for the morning commute. here is a look at what we'll be
5:02 am
monitoring the next couple of hours as the system continues to push through. we will have those wind advisories in effect. gusty winds along with a flood watch and the biggest concern will be the ponding water on the roads and also as you saw there the potential for some rocks to flow on the streets and rising creek levels as well. we do have more storms ahead. how this will impact potentially not only the end of december but also into the start of january. so, again, the big concern right now will be the wind advisory. in addition to that a high surf advisory and a beach hazard statement goes into effect as well early this morning so really around the coastline expect to see some of those strong rip currents and dangerous sneaker waves. never turn your back to a wave. i will take you through the timing of the storms we have looking ahead and how much rain and sierra snow we will be getting out of this system coming up in a few minutes. first, let's take a look at how some of the roads are doing. hey, mike. vianey, thank you. our live camera at the bay
5:03 am
bridge. we'll see more than yesterday which was a holiday and a return day for a lot of folks on vacation. the big kickup, the watter rooster tailing coming off the overcrossing so traffic still very light but at speed this could be a hazard. these are the conditions west out of oakland. it's eastbound where it will be equally wet. look at the puddling and ponding in san francisco. the lower deck actually gets water. it's exposed. a report of a car that hydroplaned in the treasure island tunnel or right as you get to the entrance. that will mean slicker roadways. the water drags past cars. there are no injuries in the tunnel but there may be a lane blocked for a short period of time. a critical connector to the bay bridge, of course. we're looking at blue, much more standing water, puddling and ponding. highway 29, you saw that rock slide came down just outside guerneville in the north bay,
5:04 am
all the way down the peninsula, but really hitting in oakland and into contra costa county. this will be an issue as traffic builds 680 down through danville, off the walnut creek interchange. >> mike highlighted a lot of trouble spots. we have crews monitoring these conditions. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is live for us in willow glen where a lot of people there have been preparing and also you have some updates on a crash there. >> reporter: that's right, marcus and laura. a good, wet morning to you. actually drove down from san francisco down to san jose and i have to say the rain seems stronger on that commute down but now that we're actually stationed here in downtown willow glen you can see the rain come down. not too long ago there was a man that just ran past sneaking in a morning run maybe before we
5:05 am
expect more of that downpour later on in the day but this rain already starting overnight in san jose. you can see some of the video that was taken last night from some of that stronger rain that already hit san jose as well as other parts of the bay area. now sunnyvale also doing their part to tweet some important reminders this morning about picking up sandbags. they say pick up sandbags if you need them. another reminder never drive through flooded roads. if you see a downed power line, never approach it. if you have pets, be sure you have them -- that they have warm shelter, too. sandbags are sunnyvale residents at 221 commercial street. go ahead and pick those up. marcus, as you mentioned, it has been quite a slippery and possibly potentially dangerous morning on the roads and as well as overnight. we have some video of a crash that took place over in contra costa county in antioch where
5:06 am
there was a car who got into a crash because of the wet roads. antioch police sergeant reminding drivers -- the driver in this crash was rushed to the hospital where he slammed into a tree on a wet antioch street. his truck wrapped around that tree. now the accident happened on lone tree way across the street from the walmart. this happened around 9:00 p.m. last night. as you can imagine authorities all across the bay area reminding drivers to stay safe. i know mike was just talking about it not too long ago but my hydroplaning is a big danger this morning. as vianey and mike have talked about, it will continue to be wet on the roads but warming centers are also available. there is one over at roosevelt community center as well as west
5:07 am
valley branch library. you can see that on your screen. we'll have more updates from the south bay as this rain continues to pour. we're live in willow glen, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> it's going to come down the next several days. thank you, ginger. be sure to stay with us all morning long and all weeklong as we continue to follow the series of storms hitting the bay area streaming online at nbcbayarea.com and on roku, apple tv. you can track the storms with our interactive radar. 5:07 for you this morning. we are learning new details about a house fire in san francisco. 15 people have been displaced. those flames destroyed the building on geneva avenue. the red cross is helping 11 adults and 4 children find temporary housing. the cause of the fire still under investigation. and one woman had to be rescued after getting stuck in this house fire in berkeley
5:08 am
hills. it happened on shasta road last night. two people were taken to the hospital. no word yet on that person's condition. a follow-up to a story gaining national headlines. san ramon police arrested a colorado man for hate crimes accused of harassing two people at in-n-out on christmas eve. it started when a man walked up to two young people eating at in-n-out in san ramon. the suspect then began to berate the pair with racist and homophobic slurs. the entire encounter was caught on camera and posted to tiktok gaining hundreds of views in a matter of hours. the two are reflecting on how they will make sure this doesn't happen to other people. >> i think i am a lot more traumatized from this experience than i previously thought. it really established the fact this can happen again and obviously as much of a relief as it is, i'm still kind of scared. >> i want to bring more awareness. there are a lot of charities and
5:09 am
organizations out there, and we're going to be doing our best to directing attention from the video to that, from a smaller scale onto a bigger scale. >> the suspect is now being held at a martinez jail for violating california hate crime laws. developing for you now, a so-called once-in-a-lifetime blizzard is now leaving several states across the country burden of proof buried under snow. this is from buffalo, new york. you can see how all of the cars here just buried in all of that snow. they were abandoned in the middle of the street like this one here. so more severe weather still on the way for that area. a live look in new york this morning. take a look at this. you can see this is where a state of emergency has been declared. that storm has killed at least 57 people nationwide including 27 in new york's erie county. the federal government is ready to come to the state's aid. a photo showing the president reaching out to new york governor kathy hochul monday.
5:10 am
>> we will be getting through this together very soon. i feel confident of that. the most important thing is please stay at home for the next day. >> that weather has delayed more than 8,000 flights across the country since christmas day. nearly another 4,000 have been canceled. that includes several right here in the bay area. southwest airlines warns mass disruption will continue this week, and the airline is operating at one-third of its scheduled flights for the next few days. i want to bring in meteorologist vianey arana. you have been tracking where the storm is aimed. right now let's talk about the bay area. i can see it here. i don't know what it means. that's how nicely the atmospheric river is set up in the sky. whenever we show you satellite radar it paints a picture of what's happening in the atmosphere. as you said, marcus, lining up that plume of moisture and as we head through the next hour and maybe even into the 7:00, 8:00
5:11 am
a.m. hour, we'll see the heaviest of the rain. we are right in the middle of that. let's take a look at our storm ranger doppler radar. we're the only ones in the bay area that has it. a fantastic job. take a look at san francisco. you can see a lot of those yellow pockets in through participates of the east bay. san jose seeing some of that rain pretty much widespread right now and whenever we are experiencing that atmospheric river flow, what we worry about, of course, is a lot of rain all at once especially for areas along the burn scars in the santa cruz mountains. we could see the potential anywhere from 2 to possibly 5 inches for areas in the north bay and the ben lomond area. that flood watch is in place. i will be looking at san francisco because ponding water has been an issue in the city when we get a lot of rain, a lot of the drains end up being clogged. we'll monitor for that along
5:12 am
with the creeks and streams. we have that wind advisory in place, also not a good day to head to the beach. we have a beach hazard statement and a high surf advisory in effect. and we have more rain in addition to what we're seeing today in the upcoming days. i'll take you through the timing of what to expect there in a few minutes. first, we still have to look out for those gas prices, of course. how are things doing, mike? you don't want to run out of gas on a day like today and be stranded in the rain. we are looking at your bargains. san jose, diamond gas and market in santa clara at $3.79, the top of our list. santa clara's best $3.79. concord at $3.19 and in marin county the arco at $3.49 and marin county watching the usual
5:13 am
suspects like lucky drive for flooding. your usual suspects will get the flooding. in the east bay i will zoom in the middle over contra costa county, alameda county. an earlier crash, one vehicle may have lost traction in some of that wet roadway there and there was a crash after a little bit of a loss of control and so that's what's going on blocking part of your slow lane. the conditions off the dublin bridge as the volume starts to build off the dublin interchange. back to you. coming up on "today in the bay," we've talked a lot about tech workers losing their jobs. let's think positive. they're getting their jobs bouncing back quickly. plus, butter me not. the new craze taking over the internet. the way many are turning butter into candles. we want to know what you think. is it a good idea? stay with us.
5:16 am
it is 5:16. we are under a microclimate weather alert. we have heavy rain coming down right now, wind advisories and flood watches are in effect especially around the coastline, the mountain areas could see anywhere from 2 to 5 inches by the time the storm makes its exit. be careful of ponding water. more storms ahead. we'll detail the time line of that coming up in a few minutes. we have flooding, we have
5:17 am
wind, we have the commute building here this is oakland. the headlights blurring but heading south as water kicks up behind the cars on your windshield. make sure your windshields and tires are in good shape and you are wide awake. lots to report, lots of flooding and crashes coming up. good morning. very happy tuesday to you. markets looking for a boost on news from china. i'll talk more about that in a second. all of the numbers on my board are actually from friday because that was the most recent trading day. there was no trading yesterday. christmas was on a sunday, so traders took monday off as the observed holiday. that explains why southwest stock is in the green. this is not going to happen today. not after the debacle the low-cost airline experienced and is still experiencing. chris chmura will take a look at the staffing problems at that airline coming up in just a bit. we're still getting the numbers but estimates put southwest
5:18 am
cancellations just under 3,000. that's not even the worst southwest has seen. at the top the four days in 2021 that led to 3,100 cancellations. jetblue had that famous tie-up in 2007 that led to the dismissal of the ceo, nowhere close to southwest's problem. we've talked a lot about layoffs in the tech sector. for those who lose their jobs, they find others pretty quickly according to a new study from zip recruiter published in "the wall street journal" this morning. 79 perps of those laid off in high tech had a new job within four months. 4 in 10 in less than one month. while we see layoffs in tech, it's not reflected in the broader market. we're still at 3.7% unemployment near record lows. as for that china news, china says visitors to the country will not have to go through severe quarantine to determine if they have covid. they still have to test but considering china has been essentially closed for years,
5:19 am
that's big news that has investors excited. now this comes after nationwide protests in china which led xi jinping's government to ease off restrictions. the bottom line is protests work that is a lesson the average chinese may take to heart. investor and i talked about that idea china has been forever changed in the latest episode of our podcast "sand hill road." she was in charge of the apple watch factory development. >> interesting. >> she has an interesting perspective on it. this idea that if you go to the street and hold up signs and chant and scare the government, the government changes is obvious to us but not in china. i think we've learned this lesson. it will be interesting where that goes. >> yeah, very different. >> i know you'll be watching. thanks, scott. okay, a lot of people love those butter boards. butter candles have arrived and
5:20 am
are taking over. >> the latest tiktok trend taking the internet by storm. people are turning butter sticks into candles. they're all over tiktok. some even using vegan butter. how they make the canned frls that rock solid stick with a wick put in it. you can light it at the table and dip the bread into it. do you think it should be a thing? i put it on my twitter account. head to my twitter page and weigh in. at first i thought what a waste of butter. butter is expensive right now. but then i thought, oh, they're dipping in it. that's a lot of butter. >> a little candle and a stick of butter -- >> probably do the small ones. >> you don't want to eat the wax. >> or double dip. >> you need to make a way to
5:21 am
have it drip over the bread. mine is a fancy table, marcus. oh, we just saw a plane take off. i can't believe it's taking off in that. >> i know. and the travel woes. >> it's been tough. travelers everywhere from winter storms in the east coast, now it's our turn. this storm isn't going to be a cold storm. it is going to bring a lot of sierra snow. i want to get to the atmospheric river, a live look about 58 degrees. the commute is always one of the greatest concerns. slow it down out there, please. we have a lot of rain, satellite radar painting a beautiful picture of that river in the sky, so think of it as a plume of moisture over our air. this is what satellite is painting in the atmosphere and that subtropical moisture already has brought down a good, decent amount of rain. here is what it looks like on
5:22 am
storm ranger, satellite ranger. the green is light to moderate with heavier pockets at times where the yellow and orange glow is. notice here in through hayward along 880, fremont seeing some of that rain. a little further to the south bay, light to moderate rain. santa cruz as well seeing that rain. it will be pretty much nonstop for the next hour and that is the reason why there is a flood watch in place but they also added san francisco, palo alto and fremont with a flood advisory because many times in the past when we've seen this much rain all at once we get a lot of issues causing ponding water and, of course, we monitor for debris flow in the burn scars. wind advisory in effect. mount diablo has seen a wind gust of 60 miles per hour so those higher peaks getting the majority of the gusty conditions. the peak wind is happening right now, and then we'll see the winds taper off. a high surf advisory does remain
5:23 am
in effect through wednesday morning. we're talking about 12 to 17 feet, breakers 25. of course this brings dangerous rip currents and your hourly forecast by 7:00 a.m. we're still going to see some of that bull's eye activity right over santa cruz but it's a fast moving system. though it's packing a punch, it will move out quickly by 8:30. the south bay still gives the majority of the focus, a break in the rain in san francisco and the north bay and then by 10:30 it starts to clear out. notice by 1:30 the majority of the rain will be gone and we'll be seeing the cloudy skies left behind that. so we're going to get a nice break from the rain but not a good day to travel to the sierra. a winter storm warning is in place. look at that, lots of snow on the way. let's get a check of how the roads are doing. mike? what's not snow, the other form of water, the rain. looking over here 580 does move
5:24 am
smoothly, i want to show you the conditions past the interchange. the interchange is here. we have this activity blocking one lane. reports one vehicle spun out crashing another vehicle, the original crash at castro valley boulevard. look at the puddling and ponding extending into the north bay and over in san rafael as well. be careful out there. no complete closures because of flooding. 5:24. up next, nbc bay area responds. >> reporter: what is happening at southwest airlines now behind the scenes, and what could it mean for all airlines and you down the road? i'm consumer investigator chris i'm consumer investigator chris chmura.

also, an overnight rock slide in the north bay. plus, a travel nightmare for tens of thousands of southwest airlines canceling tens of thousands of flights across the country and here in the bay area. ahead, the way the airline is responding and the changes some passengers can expect to see in the coming days. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. thanks so much for starting your morning with us. it's 5:30. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we want to get you started with the day, get right to our top story, that winter rainstorm we have going on right now. "today in the bay's" thom jensen live for us in the north bay where things are going on right now, but first we want to go to vianey arana who is monitoring the storm that continues to come in. we are in the thick of it now. as you watch us at home, i don't want to drive in the storm and avoid the storm, hold off.
5:32 am
the biggest difference heading into the afternoon, the atmospheric river you could see the plume taking direct aim right at the bay area will continue to make its trek out. we're seeing light to moderate rain, heavy pockets, you can see the heavier areas moving in through hayward, dublin, down through fremont. if i zoom this out closer to san jose, you can see a stronger cell moving in as well into the downtown area. santa cruz really expects to keep that pouring until about 8:00, 9:00, and then even at 9:30 to 10:00 we'll see that scattered shower activity so your morning commute will be dangerous. we have the wind advisories in effect. gusty winds, though, for the mountain and higher peaks and around the coastline where we're seeing the strongest conditions. flood watches are in place, also a flood advisory as well for san francisco because of the potential for the ponding water along the roadways could cause big issues there.
5:33 am
we do have more storms on the way but, again, if you're thinking i want to hold off until the worst of the rain clears out, wait until after 8:00, 8:30. the heavier pockets in san francisco and the north bay. the south bay still expected to get the rain through 10:30 in the morning. so if you don't have to be out driving right now, you should probably just stay at home and watch us and stay safe, right, mike? absolutely, vianey. your report and my report go hand-in-hand as we always talk about because you show the activity in hayward. this is the hayward side of the san mateo bridge. there's a crew just outside of the toll plaza. we see cars slowing and bunching up this morning and much different than yesterday. it's 5:33 right now. another wave heading into this area. this puddling and ponding extending from hayward down 580.
5:34 am
over on the landfall area. lots of puddling and ponding throughout the peninsula side, the east bay. some lanes blocked because of rain and standing water, puddling but no complete closures for freeways. watch for the puddles, avoid them when you see the flashing lights. they will be there throughout oakland, for 880 north of broadway. the bay bridge itself relatively light. back to you. >> thank you very much. the rain is hitting the entire bay area. bracing to get hit hard by the storm system sweeping through the region the next several days. "today in the bay's" thom jensen live in an area bracing for the rain and what do conditions look like there? >> reporter: i can tell you the
5:35 am
creek was just a trickle a short time ago, under 2 feet. more than 6 feet. it was holding steady at 2 feet for several days. the creek as we take a live look at the fire camera at san anselmo, it has to more than double to reach flood stage which is over 13 feet. we'll see sandbags and floodgates go up outside businesses and then comes up another 4 feet what's considered major flooding like we saw in late december 2005. that's when the water came rushing across san anselmo and flooded businesses in the downtown. folks in marin county keeping an eye on the creek gauges and
5:36 am
neighbors in sonoma will focus on the burn areas where there's potential for mud slides. >> it reduces the threat to our community. whether you're in santa rosa, the north bay or the bay area, we want people and residents doing their part to be prepared for a storm like this. >> reporter: santa rosa did get pounded with rain overnight, significant rain falling in sheets not just in santa rosa but across wide areas of the bay area. santa rosa fire division chief told us small breaks will help but if it keeps pouring day after day watch out. we could experience some significant flooding and mud slides. we are seeing some of the rock and mud came washing down on 116 south of guerneville early this morning. a mess there, tricky driving conditions for people navigating most of the north bay. highways across the bay area not
5:37 am
just rock and mud but standing water across numerous roads. a lot to navigate as folks in the north bay get up and head off to work. take a little extra time, go slower. you're going to have to slow down. i know i had to slow down a lot coming in today, a lot of standing water on highway 37. live in san anselmo, thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> allow a little extra time. it will be so wet. if you want to keep track of what's going on with the rain, because a lot of it is coming down including some fog out there, when it will hit your neighborhood or how long it will stick around, download our free nbc bay area app. you will get those alerts when the showers or even a change are heading your way. you can track that rain using our interactive radar. >> now to a live look at sfo where desperation is growing for many passengers. this is flight cancellation
5:38 am
pileups by the thousands mostly through southwest airlines. nearly 5,000 flights have been canceled nationwide and 2,500 are with southwest. the situation now catching the attention of the u.s. department of transportation. one family tells us they were just trying to spend christmas with their son in san diego but their flight transferred them to oakland on sunday and they've been stuck here ever since sleeping on benches. >> they don't give any accommodations to eat or where to stay because they said of the bad weather. >> while they recover they've decided to only fly one-third of their scheduled flights for the next several days. in a statement they wrote in part, quote, our employees and crews scheduled to work are showing up in every single way but a leaked memo states they
5:39 am
have entered a state of operational emergency due to an unusually high number of absences. southwest airlines was understaffed for this meltdown as well. we asked chris chmura to find out. >> reporter: good morning, let's look at the payroll. the bureau of transportation statistics says southwest airlines has more than 3,000 more employees now than the beginning of the pandemic. southwest said its employees and crews are showing up in every single way, but at the same time this internal memo has leaked from december 21st. it shows in denver at least unusually high absences and an operational emergency due to the staffing issues. we asked southwest whether that memo is an indication of other problems at other airports or perhaps system wide. it downplayed the memo but didn't give us specific details about what caused the tsunami of
5:40 am
cancellations. one thing that thousands upon thousands of southwest passengers are facing is the fact that a southwest airlines ticket can only be rebooked on southwest. so we had a theoretical passenger here we wanted to get from san jose to atlanta. the earliest we could get that passenger from san jose to atlanta is saturday. that is so frustrating for so many families at the holidays, and i have to wonder whether this happening at the holidays is a flash point and perhaps enough complaints will be sent to washington for washington to consider doing what some other countries do, they require all airlines to rebook onto other airlines. the question is whether that is going to happen here. we'll be watching for it. back to you. >> thanks, chris. let's take a live look for you at palisades resort in lake tahoe. the snow is not letting up. take a look at that. the resort says there is a good

chance the upper mountain lifts will be impacted for days and it may even cancel outdoor activities. they are expecting winds to get up to 30 miles an hour and a couple feet of snow on the upper and lower mountains. to meteorologist vianey arana who has been tracking those conditions. sometimes you think all that snow is great for the skiers. whoa, a little bit too much. you have to wait for the conditions to improve. you saw the wind, that camera did a nice job of showcasing how dangerous it can get up there. we have a high wind warning. this is in effect and i want to turn your attention to the color hue colors, the 50-mile-an-hour winds and we have plenty of that across the sierra. that will remain in place until pretty much this afternoon. we could see this be extended. if you are looking for a travel window, today will not be your day to head up to the sierra potentially leading into maybe
5:42 am
early tomorrow you might get a better chance, but even then a lot of ice on the roads and i do also want to show you the winter storm warning in effect and to give you an idea this is the start of what we will be seeing the next several days. i took this all the way through january 6th when it comes to our next series of storms that will move in. if you notice kingvale, 87 inches. kirkwood, 95 inches of snow. excellent for our sierra snowpack. if you are trying to make your way up there you want to avoid the roads altogether at least until the winter storm warnings expire which, again, aren't in effect until tomorrow early morning. the high wind warning is also still in effect until this afternoon. now a closer look at how we're going to be doing as far as the timing for the rain here locally coming up in a few minutes. but first, we want to get a check of the roads with mike. the conditions are the issue. more traffic than yesterday but the volume not so much of an issue. the conditions are really the problem vianey has been talking about all morning. we have rain and trees down on
5:43 am
highway 1 just outside devil slide reported early this morning. some flooding, puddling and ponding, 880 at broadway. 680 in concord and now 242 with a tree down on the northbound side coming through concord. that may be a factor. i believe they had to stop traffic for a short time. 580 is moving relatively smoothly. that speed sensor has to be wrong. the puddling and ponding not really affecting vasco road but still just about 20 minutes off marsh creek down to 580. into walnut creek we are seeing slower drives as the rain really hit. talk about the rain affecting 242, the bay bridge as well. keep that in mind and this evening looking ahead we have a warriors game at chase center. if it's rainy that would mean lower visibility. back to you. >> good to know, thanks, mike. 5:43. tackling mental health. ahead on "today in the bay," the way one local poet is using art to help those struggling with
