take a look at satellite radar. it's doing a really nice job of painting a picture of that plume in the atmosphere that will continue its push in through the afternoon. i do want to zoom this in closer using our very own storm ranger because it does a nice job of showcasing where some of the heavier pockets of rain are. fremont, we have some areas of dublin right now, zooming this out notice san jose is hit or miss, we have the rain shadowing happening right now but it's light to moderate at times and it is expected to pick up in the south bay and the santa cruz mountains right around 8:00 a.m. between 8:00 and 9:30 we'll see heavier pockets as that ban continues to push out. wind advisories in place. especially for the mountain areas in the north bay, the santa cruz mountains, the east bay hills but also in san francisco because we've seen in the past we get rain and it causes the ponding causing big
6:01 am
issues out there. overall we'll see more storms ahead. we'll talk about when there's going to be a little bit of a break. we are going to get a minibreak from the rain before it picks back up heading into new year's eve, and that will be an interesting take on the welcoming of 2023. the san mateo bridge, when rain passed over a lot of slowing westbound. we still have a well metered drive, i think, below what folks are usually driving when there are clear conditions. an earlier crash, a vehicle went into a tree on the roadside. no major injuries. there may be flashing lights. there may still be slowing there. bottom of the screen, we see slowing north 87. that's where the slowing because of an earlier spinout, vehicles getting cleared from north 87 just as the commute starts to build. those are in your commute

the rain has come in waves this is a little bit of -- it's slowed down the last time we chatted. the rain and the winds were here. around in san jose overnight. authorities actually tweeting out some important reminders to some people to make sure they are on a safer side of things, pick up sandbags if you need them. never drive through flooded roads. if you see a downed power line, never approach it and if you have pets, be sure they have warm shelter, too. now sandbags for sunnyvale residents are available for self-service on commercial street. you can see that information on your screen. now as mike was alluding to roads have been wet and potentially dangerous throughout the night and into the morning. a driver was sent to the hospital in contra costa county after his truck slammed and wrapped around a tree on a wet antioch road. that crash happened on lone tree way last night around 9:00 p.m. here in downtown willow glen
6:04 am
things are still manageable. we are close to an orange theory workout location, and people have been coming in and out trying to sneak in their morning workouts. catching up with mason who is from the willow glen area just finished his workout but he tells us a couple things. one, the weather wasn't enough, wasn't stormy enough to stop your workout but it was windy last night. >> it definitely was windy. sensor lights kept going on and off which makes it harder to sleep. a good thing it's indoors. i would not be working outdoors today. >> reporter: your neighborhood has been flooded in the past. >> it has been. >> reporter: talk to us about the last experience and how you're preparing for this one. >> what i've noticed where the driveway ends, that whole gutter, just slides. usually every, i don't know, 12 hours, going out to sweep the drains, get all the leaves out so it can run down. there's all we can really do. other than that stay inside. >> reporter: stay inside, get

warm. i know the blood is flowing but stay warm and dry as the storm approaches. warming centers also really important for people not just today but in the days ahead when we are expecting a little bit more wet and cooler weather. warming centers are available not specifically for this storm but available at roosevelt community center as well as west valley branch library. we have some of that information on up screen and we can share that on our social media pages as well. we're live in downtown willow glen. >> good to know services are available. >> be sure to stay with us all morning long and all weeklong as we continue to follow the series of storms hitting the bay area. we stream online at nbcbayarea.com and on roku, amazon fire tv and apple tv plus. don't forget you can also download our free nbc bay area app to track the storms with our interactive radar. we are learning new details

about a house fire in san francisco. 15 people have been displaced. flames destroyed the building on geneva avenue just before 8:00 last night. the red cross is helping 11 adults and 4 children find temporary housing. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. and one woman had to be rescued after getting stuck in this house fire. this is in the berkeley hills. it happened on shasta road last night. two people were taken to the hospital. there is no word yet on their condition. we have a follow-up on a story gaining national headlines. a colorado man arrested for hate crimes accused of harassing two people at an in-n-out on christmas eve. he walked up to two young eating out. the suspect then began to berate the pair with racist and homophobic slurs. the entire encounter was caught on camera and posted to tiktok gaining hundreds of views in a matter of hours. the two are now reflecting on
6:07 am
how they're going to try to make sure this doesn't happen to other people. >> i think i am a lot more traumatized from this experience than i previously thought. it really established the fact this can happen again and obviously as much of a relief as it is, i'm still kind of scared. >> i want to bring more awareness. there's a lot of charities, a lot of organizations out there and we're going to be doing our best to kind of directing attention from the video to that from a smaller scale onto a bigger scale. >> the suspect is being held at a martinez jail for violating california hate crime laws. 6:07 now. and developing the so-called once-in-a-lifetime blizzard now leaving several states across the country buried under snow. this is drone footage from buffalo, new york, and you can see a lot of these cars here just abandoned. this is a street right here stopped in the middle of the street. there's more severe weather still on the way.

in the bay area. everywhere is affected but we have that storm coming in now. we have the impacts of that atmospheric river, that system that brought the arctic blast to a lot of the nation, over 60% of the u.s., is now starting to dissipate with lake-effect snow beginning to make its exit but leaving behind some freezing temperatures and a lot of people remain without power that will continue to be a potential threat into the upcoming days. for us here locally as i zoom this in you can see the plume of moisture. the good news out of this system it's very fast moving. so as quickly as it comes in it will make its exit right now. the model runs are trending towards less rainfall than initially expected. anywhere from about a quarter of an inch to possibly over an inch and a half and two inches for most of the bay area with some of the higher totals in the mountain areas. i'll take you more through our next series of storms coming up in a few minutes. first, let's check in on the gas
6:10 am
prices. over here gas prices there's less as far as charges go. the best outside of san jose, diamond gas and market in santa clara is $3.79. i know it's higher than we normally show. i typically focus on the many prices below that point in san jose. santa clara the best is $3.79. concord, $3.19. in marin county the best is at arco on redwood highway with $3.49. we are watching the same area for flooding. we have spots like lucky drive. ponding throughout the peninsula in towards parts of the south bay, the santa cruz mountains. this is the big slow spot that stands out north 87. an earlier crash chp reports it's cleared to just the right lane. we're watching for slowing. the volume of traffic is still relatively light but the conditions are tough out there. the bay bridge clear but really

at 6:13 we remain under a microclimate weather alert as the heaviest of the rain continues to push through now making its move more south bay focused. the next couple of hours that system will clear out. we'll talk about the timing. be careful out there. lots of ponding water on our roadways. you can see it on our road weather index. the blue shows where there's likely puddling and ponding, but the red shows you where it's slow and suddenly pops up here on the east shore freeway. there is a crash reported at ashby avenue still blocking one lane. with backups like that folks are stopping suddenly to watch the ripple effects richmond to the bay bridge. markets looking for a boost from news on china. the most recent trading day was
6:15 am
friday. no trading yesterday. traders took monday off as an observed holiday. also why you see southwest stock in the green. not going to happen today. not after the debacle the low-cost airline experienced and is still experiencing. chris chmura will take a look at the staffing problems at that airline coming up in just a bit. we're still getting the numbers but estimates put southwest cancellations at just under 3,000. but that's not at the top because that's not the worst southwest has seen. there were four days in 2021 that led to 3,100 cancellations. jetblue had the tie-up in 2007 that led to the dismissal of the ceo, and it wasn't anywhere close to southwest's problems today. we've talked about layoffs in the tech sector but for those who lose their jobs, they find them again pretty quickly according to a new study from zip recruiter published in "the wall street journal" this morning.
6:16 am
79% of those laid off in high tech find a new job within three months. 4 in 10 found a new job in less than one month. while we see layoffs in tech, it's not reflected in the broader market. we're still 3.7% unemployment near record lows. as for that china news, china says visitors to the country will not have to go through a severe quarantine to determine if they have covid. they still have to test. considering china has been closed off to foreigners for years that's big news and has investors united. jinping's government eased off restrictions. bottom line these protests work. that's a lesson the average chinese may take to heart. we talked about that idea that china has been forever changed by this in our latest he soaped of the podcast sand hill road. do understand that as they are
6:17 am
loosening up, a lot of people are dying. i mean, it's a very serious problem, a health crisis, but it's a crisis for the government because for the first time in a lot of people's lives, they've seen protests lead to change, something totally foreign in china. you do it once, you can do it again. >> i'm sure they will. >> i think they will. >> thanks, scott. >> you bet. 6:17. trending this morning a southern california woman has her iphone to thank for being alive after crashing off of a cliff. the woman's family says she didn't come home after leaving a family gathering. they checked her location using find my iphone app and they were able to see where she was. the family then called police. crews arrived and found the woman in her car about 200 feet below the roadway. she was taken to the hospital and survived. >> those conditions, too, it can get cold out there at night. >> and that's a good idea, too.
6:18 am
i share my location with my family and also some of my closest friends locally. it's important. you just never know. the conditions when it comes to driving especially difficult right now but this is a quick moving system. so right now as far as where we're seeing the heaviest pockets, a lot of it more south bay based. if you look at san francisco, the wet roadways right now are still going to be a concern. it's about 58 degrees and satellite radar doing a nice job showing us what's going on in the atmosphere. the system will continue to move out over the next couple of hours. let's take a look at where the rain currently is. you seep the lighter green, lighter areas, lighter pockets of rain and where the highlighted orange glows are some of the heavier pockets at times including in through fremont, livermore. notice along 680 really coming down right now. if i zoom this out closer to the south bay, san jose getting a mix of light and moderate at times. the same goes for santa cruz. we're getting a little bit of that shadowing in through gilroy
6:19 am
but still seeing some of that light to moderate rain at times. when is the rain going to move out? this is going to be important. notice at 7:00 a.m. the time stamp is right up there in the corner, we'll get a lot of that majority in the south bay, san jose, morgan hill, gilroy, santa cruz and then in through parts of the interior and the north bay very light, very scattered, about 8:30. the focus still remains over santa cruz and the south bay and then 10:30 we'll get the last of the heavier pockets of rain continuing to make their way through but it will be very gusty along that storm line of systems as it moves out. we've seen wind gusts of 60 mimes an hour in the mount diablo range. we get a break from the rain and we just get that cloud cover that moves in and rainfall totals right now actually trending a little less than what we initially had seen coming in from this atmospheric river. the conditions right now are showing the potential for anywhere from a quarter of an inch of rain to over an inch and
6:20 am
a half, two inches with higher totals in the santa cruz mountains. trending less, which is good. anytime we see too much rain at once, it can be impactful for the burn scars. it will remain an issue because we have more storms ahead. with all that have saturated flow, the rain will have nowhere to go. hour by hour forecast, gusty winds. localized flooding will be an issue with the flood watch in place for most of the bay area. bibi 12:00 notice the rain at times mostly around san francisco and the south bay, winds from the west/southwest, temperatures in the 50s. advancing this forward to about 3:00 p.m. decreasing showers. by this point showers will be isolated. the winds will still be breezy about 20 miles per hour. your seven-day forecast we do get a break from the rain into wednesday before another system moves in on thursday. more sierra snow into saturday.
6:21 am
travel to the sierra not recommended at all. let's get a check of how the roads are doing, mike. we suggest you carry chains. look at the conditions on the toll plaza. no metering lights. 6:21 already. part of the reason traffic is light here it's held up on the east shore freeway. a crash blocking just one lane at ashby avenue has traffic backing up coming off the golden gate fields. there may be another crash near cutting. even more standing water throughout contra costa county, highway 4, 680 seeing a lot of slowing. flooding reported through concord. 580 slowing westbound. likely a distraction but much more water heading south. back to you. next here on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds. >> reporter: what is happening at southwest airlines now behind the scenes, and what could it
6:22 am
mean for all airlines and you down the road? i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll try to answer those questions for you next. but first, look who is about to go out on a walk before the rain came in. that's mike inouye's dog. on top of keeping track of his dog and finding an opportunity for a walk, mike also tracks the wet morning commute. you can follow him on instagram, twitter and facebook and of course live every morning here on "today in the bay" 4:30 to 7:00 a.m. >> i cl vianey before we takale
6:25 am
so over the summer airlines had staffing issues and big problems similar to the issues we have been reporting for you this week. so with southwest airlines understaffed now, too? >> we asked chris chmura to find out. >> reporter: good morning, let's look at the payroll. the bureau of transportation statistics says southwest airlines has more than 3,000 more employees now than the beginning of the pandemic. southwest said its employees and crews are showing up in every single way, but at the same time this internal memo has leaked from december 21st. it shows in denver at least unusually high absences and an operational emergency due to the staffing issues.
6:26 am
we asked southwest whether that memo is an indication of other problems at other airports or perhaps system wide. it downplayed the memo but didn't give us specific details about what caused the tsunami of cancellations. one thing that thousands upon thousands of southwest passengers are facing is the fact that a southwest airlines ticket can only be rebooked on southwest. so we had a theoretical passenger here we wanted to get from san jose to atlanta. the earliest we could get that passenger from san jose to atlanta is saturday. that is so frustrating for so many families at the holidays, and i have to wonder whether this happening at the holidays is a flash point and perhaps enough complaints will be sent to washington for washington to consider doing what some other countries do, they require all airlines to rebook onto other airlines. the question is whether that is going to happen here. we'll be watching for it. back to you.
6:27 am
>> thanks, chris. 6:26 right now. up next, the stop stories we're following today including the severe weather from the east coast to right here on the west coast. storms causing a travel nightmare for tens of thousands. southwest airlines canceling hundreds of flights for travelers across the country and right here in the bay area. look at the lines out of sjc. the changes some passengers can expect to see in the coming days. >> reporter: watching what's happening on the creeks here, how high are they going to come? are we in danger of flooding? we'll show you what to expect.
6:30 am
right now at 6:30, winter is here. making an impact right now the first of multiple storms this week arrives in the bay area overnight, and it's really starting to come down this hour. we have new details about an early morning rock slide in the north bay. we're tracking the heavy rains and possible flooding. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. good tuesday morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. 6:30 right now. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we have live team coverage for you that morning. thom jensen is live for us in the bay area in the north bay where residents are bracing for potential flooding. mike is following slick conditions on the roads.
6:31 am
but first, meteorologist vianey arana is tracking the storm's path. when will we see the worst of the storm? it will depend on where you live. we're in the thick of it now. in the north bay you saw heavier pockets. in the south bay and santa cruz we have about an hour and a half to go before we see that bull's eye about 8:30 to 10:00. you can see the satellite radar showing the atmospheric river. now this is a very fast moving system so by the afternoon we're going to see the majority of this rain cleared out to the south. a zoom-in of mobile doppler radar, zooming in through san jose about to get a line of heavy pockets gusty with rain at times.
6:32 am
we have rain at times but a lot of it is going to be in san francisco and the south bay. a change in the weather pattern. it is saying this is one of the most active endings to december that they've seen since 2005. >> we always feel like it's the worst. right on the lens north 280. through san jose, the volume of traffic not so bad today. conditions are the caution point and more rain coming in as the volume starts to build. the crash on 87 cleared, complete recovery to that portion. look, flooding and puddling, ponding where things are blue, really tough coming through the tri-valley and across the san

mateo bridge, the span itself looks like it's clear. i saw some flashing lights but never saw a problem from the hayward side. the east shore freeway west 80 at ashby reports a crash. a smoother drive off cutting. now a backup out of berkeley and in toward emeryville but the bay bridge toll plaza itself still moving very well. it's wet. the conditions require you should slow down. metering lights are not making you stop. back to you. >> bracing for flooding. >> the storm system is sweeping through the bay area. there is one slide to report. >> "today in the bay's" thom jensen is live in san anselmo. this is one of the communities where we see the most significant flooding.
6:34 am
>> reporter: it is and good morning. last hour we were looking at san anselmo creek here right at 6 feet. in the last hour it's come up another half foot, 6 1/2 feet right now, and here is a little bit closer look live from the fire cam at the creek. late last night it started to rain heavily this morning and by 4:30 it was already more than triple that 2 foot at about 6 feet. approaching 7 feet. flood stage just over 13 feet. we have to double where it is right now. we could be there soon. we'll see dangerous flooding, sandbags going up and flooding more eminent here. then if it comes up four more feet we'll see what vianey was talking about in late december
6:35 am
2005 when we saw flooding everywhere. that's when san anselmo creek got pounded with rain and water came rushing over the banks and flooding businesses and vehicles in the downtown. it will take a few more days. folks here will be keeping their eyes on local creek gauges and neighbors will be focused on burn areas where there's the potential for mud slides. >> the concern is the number of systems that come in and how much of a break between systems. we like to see beneficial rain where there's breaks in between the systems. they help with the drought conditions to help with replenishing moisture levels that lead to fire concerns later in the year. >> reporter: santa rosa did get pounded with rain this morning.
6:36 am
if it keeps pouring day after day watch out according to the division chief. we could experience some of that significant flooding and the mud slides they're so worried about there. minor sliding already this morning in the north bay. rock and mud swept across highway 116 south of guerneville. across the bay area this morning, watch out as you're getting out, getting ready for work and start commuting. the roads will be slick. you will run into pooling water in a number of areas and it will be slow moving. give yourself extra time. thom jensen, "today in the bay." >> an easy morning, thom. thank you. when is the storm going to hit your neighborhood? time to download our free nbc bay area app to get those alerts when the rain is coming or the changing weather conditions

california will be impacted by this commute. in addition to that more sierra snow, and this looks like it will pack a punch in through the interior of tahoe. now we're going to monitor the timing very closely, though. depending on how long this lingers there could be a window of opportunity to get some clearing for those celebrations into the new year. of course this will depend on if this chooses to stall out or make its exit. january 1st starting out with a clean slate we're going to see mostly dry conditions on january 1st and then by monday monitoring an additional system, so, man, we're kicking off january on a december winter note which is good. the rain will help us boost and improve our drought conditions and here is a look at your seven-day forecast. keep that rain umbrella handy, tomorrow a break from the rain. the rain moves in until thursday and we're going to keep a close eye on that new year's eve forecast. mike, how are the roads doing? the roads are well watered is what we're looking at.

the san mateo bridge, now the backup is starting to grow. the crash at foster city boulevard, i believe cleared or is not a major issue. it's the crash on the high rise. chp crews are there. i would still suggest the dumbarton bridge south on 8830 to get down to highway 84. wet roadways where the blue is dominates our screen to the south bay throughout the tri-valley and the altamont pass. highway 4 had a lot of rain as well. the bay bridge does but it does not have metering lights on. there is still slowing through berkeley an earlier crash. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:52 right now. happening now the cause of an early morning fire in santa rosa is under investigation in the area of guerneville road and marlo road. flames burning at a construction site started at about 2:35 this morning. crews are still on the scene working to monitor some of the hot spots. we'll continue to monitor

down after this downpour. if you need sandbags you can pick them up over at 221 commercial street. also reminding people to never drive through flooded roads. if you see a downed power line, never approach it. if you have pets, be sure they have warm shelter, too. take your time on roads that are wet and dangerous. a driver was sent to the hospital in contra costa hospital after his truck slammed and wrapped around a tree on a wet antioch tree last night along lone tree way. there are warming centers at roosevelt community center and west valley branch library. those are warming centers not specifically for this storm but they will be open in case people need them. we're live in willow glen, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> thanks, ginger. well, certainly wet out
