after days of trying to operate as much of our full schedule across the busy holiday weekend, we reached a decision point to significantly reduce our flying to catch up. right now at 4:30, frustrations mounting. millions of air travelers still facing long lines, lost baggage, canceled flights at airports across the country. the way one airline is responding. plus, putting up a strong fight. despite several break-ins, one local business owner says he is not going anywhere. the reason he is planning to stick around. let's go outside. clear this morning but another

winter rainstorm is on the way. meteorologist vianey arana timing out what you need to know this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. >> pretty much everywhere. here we go. 4:30 on your wednesday morning now. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has some time off. we'll start with the forecast. meteorologist vianey arana is in for kari this week. when does the rain come back? our little break from the rain is right now into tonight. the rain does make its way back in tonight, but the storm is going to be a little different compared to yesterday's. i also want to point out that our temperatures are currently running a few degrees colder compared to yesterday. we woke up with mostly 40s, low 50s. we have a couple 30s on the map now in napa. 38 degrees. livermore, 39. behind that system we're seeing the colder temperatures and we are expecting to see, of course,

some of the early morning fog. we'll see some clearing of the fog and moving ahead expect to see the temperatures warm up into the 50s. then we'll start to see more above average temperatures for this time of year. low visibility down into livermore and look at morgan hill, down to less than a mile visibility. the weekend ahead, it's new year's eve. mike? vianey, we're looking at, like you said, much better conditions for driving right now this morning. right now live it up. it's the green sensors over to the roadways. northbound 680 closed for that road work going on. they're repaving, asphalt work north of 84 shut down until 5:00 a.m. in the area, though, i show you the oakland area. clouds hovering above the deck.

visibility on the roads itself, a smooth flow of traffic into the south bay where there are no delays, no problems. the flooding reports have cleared from the usual suspects. back to you. 4:32 and breaking news just coming in. former pope benedict very sick. his health is deteriorating. a vatican spokesperson confirms the 95-year-old's condition has worsened due to his age. this is a live look at vatican city. pope francis asking for prayers for his predecessor. benedict became the first pope to resign in about 600 years. he has been living in the vatican since mostly out of the public eye. we are continuing to monitor developments overseas all morning. we'll bring it to you on nbcbayarea.com. this morning travelers at airports and here in the bay area are growing increasingly frustrated after southwest

airlines experiences unprecedented cancellations but for some travelers nothing is going to stop them from getting to where they need to go. >> the stranded travelers are renting cars, booking train tickets, even eight-hour bus trips just to get back home. "today in the bay's" stephanie magallon talked to travelers who say they're not letting the cancellation chaos stop them. >> reporter: the airport looks almost empty. there's still a lot of luggage but no passengers. they are finding other ways of getting home, and this may be why. look at the arrival schedule, flight after flight just canceled. there's only four that are getting here on time. it looks like the travel madness across airports has leaked into rental companies, train and bus stations. >> i got my little sister calling every single rental place in town to figure out how to get from here to pasadena. >> everything that's going on from cancellation from the flights. >> reporter: diana wilkins says she may have bought the last bus ticket from san jose to palm

springs, one of hundreds stranded in the san jose international airport since friday. her flight was canceled and she was told it would take days before she could rebook. >> frustrated. just scary. i think i broke down already. >> reporter: she decided to take a bus to palm springs where her daughter lives and wait it out there. she's not the only one. amtrak workers in san jose tell me their long-distance trips are booked. you won't find anything to l.a. until after the 30th and trips headed north to seattle are booked until january 2nd. others drove hundreds of miles from l.a. and even oregon to drop off or pick up stranded family members. >> we're doing everything we can to return to a normal operation and please hear that i am truly sorry. >> reporter: he acknowledged the

situation was unacceptable and said they're working with impacted travelers. some tell us they got their money back plus vouchers. >> now i get to see my mom for free on thanksgiving and get my money back. >> reporter: stephanie magallon for "today in the bay." now our consumer investigator chris chmura is tweeting about southwest travel chaos. he posted a step-by-step guide on helping you get reimbursed. you can check it out on his twitter page @chris underscore chmura. in mandarin way yesterday afternoon police say a woman was shot in the head. paramedics rushed her to the hospital where she died. officers found the gun at the scene. investigators are interviewing a woman they say is a person of interest. no word on what led up to the shooting. a san francisco bakery owner speaking out after his business in the castro has repeatedly come under attack.

the latest incident a burglary monday night. that baker isn't planning on moving his business anywhere else. >> reporter: the well orchestrated burglary and ransacking happened overnight. a few thieves broke into le marais bake rip in the castro district and helped themselves. >> the entire pos system, the register, the tablet, the heavy safe that was downstairs. they took that as well. >> reporter: this is a business under siege. six vandalisms or burglaries in the past three years. >> i was sad today more than anything. >> reporter: on social media there was anger, some demanding more police. a mother and son who live a block away also weighed in. >> as long as the thieves can get away, this sort of thing

drive. 680 has what shouldn't be a surprise. we'll track that coming up. good morning. i'm silvana henao from cnbc. a split session yesterday with the dow rising for a second straight day while the s&p 500 slipped fractionally the nasdaq falling nearly 1.5% on declines in mega tech stocks. the index was dragged down by an 11% drop in tesla on reports the company will continue a weeklong production at its factory in shanghai. markets are on track for their worst performance since the financial crisis in 2008 with the nasdaq leading the losses down nearly 34%. now in focus today we'll get data on pending home sales. starbucks is making changes to its reward program.

insider.com reports a leaked memo shows it will be harpeder for customers to redeem some free drinks. you will still earn one star for every dollar you spend or two stars on a preloaded card, but free hot coffee, tea or baked goods will now require 100 stars, double the previous amount. iced coffee and iced tea will cost 100 stars. starbucks is following the trend of other chains like chipotle who are making it more expensive to earn rewards. and billionaires have had a bad year. lost nearly $2 trillion combined. u.s. billionaires have lost $650 billion, the highest of any country as tech stocks have nose-dived fueled by rising interest rates, soaring inflation and a weakening economy. elon musk has dropped the most with his net worth dipping about $115 billion.

let's take a live look outside. look at the lights all glowing and glistening on this wednesday morning looking live at downtown san jose. are your lights still up? how long do you leave them? i heard it's bad luck to take down your christmas tree before new year's. >> i made that up. >> oh. >> all i know there's always that one neighbor who leaves them up a long time, and if you get to june 25th, you might as well leave them up. >> right. >> now you're on the downhill. you're closer to christmas. >> you have that clear day today. >> maybe this will be your incentive. if you want to preserve your decor, you don't want to leave that for the weekend. we have more storms on the way. i mean more than one literally. we have three or four more storms on the way that will lead us into the first week of january so take advantage now,

laura said this is your window of opportunity to catch up on outdoor activities or anything like that before the rain moves back in. 48 degrees in san francisco. a beautiful view. and i want to show you this map because we are running significantly cooler in a lot of spots especially up through the north bay. napa 40 degrees. livermore, 49. yesterday we were in the 50s. that's because we had that cloud cover blanketing, trapping that heat. right now we're at about a 20-degree difference in novato. and napa about 16 degrees cooler right now. concord, ten degrees cooler. even down through san jose and morgan hill. definitely feeling a little bit of that chill behind that cold frontal system that passed through yesterday. we have some areas of patchy fog up through novato down to half a mile in through santa rosa. three miles through morgan hill, down to about a mile. not as dense as earlier in the week. satellite radar, that atmospheric river has made its

exit out of the bay area. now it's down in san diego bringing the heavy downpours at times along with the gusty winds passed through l.a. already and on deck we have all of this out in the pacific northwest. a stronger system through new year's eve. a high surf advisory does remain in effect until 9:00 a.m. today. we have dangerous rip currents. hourly forecast notice it's not going to move in until late tonight, 11:00 p.m. through calistoga, san francisco, might even see drizzle in san jose. a lot of this will happen while you're sleeping. if i fast forward this until about 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning's commute very scattered. not as widespread or intense as what we saw yesterday morning. it will be more of a scattered event. but then we take a little break and by 3:30 we get another

system that rolls through. this one will be more widespread for your thursday afternoon. so the bigger impact will come tomorrow afternoon versus tomorrow early morning. as we head in towards thursday and friday we see this all the way through saturday. the timing is looking like a friday night, early saturday morning event. heading into saturday evening we're going to watch out for the timing when it makes its exit for there to be a break in the rain leading us into january 1st. >> crews were able to head out overnight and do their traditional closure. it will continue until 5:00 a.m. and later if they have to extend for any conditions out there on that repair work area. the alternate to bernal.

it cleared up with the low clouds and fog drifting around and to the north if you're traveling through napa. the roadways are still at speed. back to you. making it in the bay has been a little bit of a roller coaster this year. the home buyers' market is seeing a cooldown. buyers are rethinking repurchasing a home. what we could potentially see are john and leslie foster. thanks for taking the time to join us. we're looking forward to 2023, a fresh start for so many, but home buyers are especially looking at the market. we've seen the cooldown. what do you think we can expect? >> 2022 definitely gave us what

i would call a healthy correction to some of the crazy and the frenziness that we saw in our real estate market. we've seen inventory levels increase. inventory levels are still low. we're looking at on average throughout the bay area maybe a one-month supply which is low. meaning if no other homes got listed it would only take a month to sell the current inventory. putting in perspective about a year ago we were at about a two-week supply. things have normalized as a result of the rates increasing. >> we definitely needed a market correction. it was just too crazy. buyers were going in with no contingencies. they were putting in offers they didn't have time to process. now buyers have the opportunity to really take the time that they need to find the perfect home. >> so let's talk about the sellers themselves. i know in my neighborhood throughout the bay area we either saw a lot of homes on the market for a lot longer or

people are not getting the price they expected. does a seller wait, hold off for spring when we usually see all the homes hit the market? what do you think? >> going back to inventory levels, they're extremely low right now, so from an economic supply and demand, if i were a seller i would be looking right now in the first quarter of 2023. not a lot of competition. so, again, from the supply and demand standpoint that might be a good time to consider putting your home on the market. >> everybody probably looking at their christmas bills coming in the mail. interest rates, though, when it comes to buying a house, this is the biggest purchase a family is going to probably make, so they have to keep their eye on those as well. >> the most important thing in our opinion as a buyer is to just have a payment that you are comfortable with that fits your budget, that you can afford. >> we covered so much more during our interview. watch the entire segment on the nbc bay area streaming app. you can find the story under our
