"today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab live in san francisco with more on what happens today. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, scott. today is more of an administrative day in court in nature. more unexpected things can still happen so it's still important to keep eyes on how this case will play out. today is the second aroundment of david depape and a step right before his trial begins. the last day he was in court was on december 14th for the preliminary hearing. the judge decided there is enough evidence for this case to go to trial. that day was packed with more details from the night of the

attack including body cam footage from officers responding to the scene that early october morning which prior to the last hearing had not been seen publicly. new details emerge from testimony on how that took place and depape's alleged confession and motive. among the charges, attempted murder and threatening the family of a public official. if he is convicted of all charges depape could face more than 50 years in prison. depape is facing a concurrent federal case. that case is set in january in the new year. we'll make sure to keep an eye on both and update with you the state's case. ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> ginger, thank you. 6:03. new developments in the case of the accused stockton serial killer. wesley brownlee is being charged

with another murder for a killing that happened in the east bay. prosecutors say brownlee killed mervin harmon in alameda county in april of 2021. brownlee now faces seven murder charges and one attempted murder charge. you can read the report online. it's at nbcbayarea.com. a bakery had the business burglarized six times in the past three years. the most recent happened monday night. thieves broke into the le marais bakery on sanchez street. there was anger, some demanding a bigger police presence. the owner says he's upset and frustrated. >> the entire pos system, the register, the tablet, the heavy safe that was downstairs. it's an industrial safe, and they took that as well. >> he also says he's not intimidated by the criminals and

intends to keep the bakery open. he does hope to get some help from the city or police and community groups. brutally cold conditions continue across the u.s. 65 people are now confirmed dead following last week's historic blizzard specifically in buffalo. the snow still hindering rescue operations. look how they have to move all the cars. police are using the armored vehicle to assist vehicles that have been stuck. a big truck in the wintry mess. mounting frustrations at the nation's airports. a live look at sfo, sjc and oakland international that have seen hundreds of cancellations and delays. hundreds of travelers meantime remain stranded. >> brie, southwest passengers are feeling the brunt of this and now there's an investigation.

a little bit of a deficit but just like a month ago we were at a deficit of over 6 inches. notice the significant improvement there. storm systems have been more south bay focused that has boosted our levels. we're doing good there. santa rosa at 75% average rain to date. san francisco 78%. oakland, livermore and san jose at 100% of average per year to date. excellent start to 2023. mike, let's check in on the gas prices. >> concord still leads with lots of prices. similar situation around that part of the county, contra costa county. our gas buddies must be out of town. cupertino at $3.69.

i think there are better values to be found in san jose. speedway $3.79. that city and county, san francisco has slightly higher prices in the rest of the bay. we have great speeds now and great conditions. much better than yesterday. one problem for contra costa county, vasco road, the southbound lane is blocked by a pickup truck. tried to clear it after a traffic break that didn't work. i believe what's going on is traffic control. you see both directions slowing. it's a light drive. down to 580 still over 20 minutes. that's the only real slowing we see. >> thank you, mike. tesla shares just keep dropping. next on "today in the bay" the issues at play and what many

dangerous. i do want to guide you through it and make sure you are prepared. we've been in a serious drought. the rain for the state of california and across most of the u.s. is really great but, man, it's been tough to see the weather impacts. san francisco, 48 degrees. clear skies and we are seeing satellite radar showing the clear skies. in the pacific something is churning. where that storm system went that we saw yesterday continued its move in through central california down to l.a. and now the impacts coming in right in through san diego. if you had plans to travel along the grapevine in addition to rain we are also seeing some dense fog advisory. it could be an issue as well. be mindful of that. another thing to consider.

we'll see winds pick up first before we see the rain. your hour by hour temperatures by about 7:00 a.m. still in the 40s. and then fast forward this time stamp until noon. increasing high clouds. daytime highs will be in the upper 50s. rain ahead so one thing you will notice the clouds will start moving in first and the impacts will move in really late tonight. we'll get a line of showers, san francisco and oakland, a couple of scattered showers. another line pushed through 2:00, 3:00 a.m. and right around your morning commute. a lot of that treks out east and to scattered pockets. if you had concerns about your morning commute notice by 3:30 we get another system that lines up. this will be a little bit more

widespread. as far as how much rain anywhere from a quarter to half an inch when you compare it to the over 6 inches in mt. tam on tuesday, definitely less significant. friday, now this will be another atmospheric tap we're looking into. it doesn't look as intense as what we saw on tuesday. because we've seen so much rain for the burn scars in through santa cruz and the north bay, the next concern friday into saturday aside from more rain is the potential for debris flow for some of the burn scars. late friday into early saturday seems to be the biggest impact, 2 to 3, 4 inches additionally. the water has nowhere to go. looking ahead to the first week of january, another break from the rain. another storm so at this point if you're keeping track right

about 6:00 so far, on tuesday, january 3, another widespread will impact us in northern california and through portland, seattle, all the way down to l.a. and san diego through the first week of january with the biggest impact through southern california. heavier pockets will continue. looking active through the first week of january. a closer look at your seven-day forecast. keep the rain boots handy. mike, how are the roads? we are mostly clear. speeds below 10 miles an hour despite the fact everything looks green. we have a disabled box truck. they're going to need to clear the southbound lane of vasco. that will be an issue down to 580 but only delays you a few minutes. still under 25 minutes for the drive. watch for the traffic control through the area.

lightning complex fire. we can expect more issues this week. >> let's check in with meteorologist vianey arana. she has been tracking another round of rain. >> and that explains a lot of the impact. there were wind advisories in effect, flood watches in effect and look at how much rain we got in some of the videos. in santa cruz we got a little over 4 inches, nearly 5 inches of rain for the highest peaks. 6 inches of rain. meanwhile in the rest of the bay area some spots including oakland got 3 inches of rain. it did pack a punch. and so did the wind. contra costa, 76 miles per hour. look at that, 60 miles per hour. the wind advisories were allowed to expire as of 9:00 a.m. yesterday but we'll see the wind pick up again tonight. not as gusty.

the incoming storm tonight, we're expecting from a quarter of an inch to just under half. a lot less rain out of this system but it could still be messy. we have a lot of ponding water. >> we also have road work to be done and drains to be cleared. we're looking at flashing lights and input an arrow so folks can take a look. headlights are blurring out our short. north 101. the exit at the end of the arrow is willow. it's open but i learned it's only one of those lanes that will be closed but will be closed until noon. there may be bunching up there. use a slower approach to willow if that's your exit in to palo alto and menlo park. it's not showing up through the area. the entire bay is showing green sensors, a great flow of traffic, great conditions tomorrow morning. we'll have had a night full of rain so that will be an issue. right now we have a day full of lighter traffic and we'll take that any day at the bay bridge. over to you. 6:32. we continue to follow breaking

disconnected from their people over the past several days. you see employees at the airport trying to reroute the bags to get back to the passengers who once had them. i believe this lady is trying to find her bag but what a lot of people are doing who have been stranded are resorting to other means. we spoke to people stranded at sjc in san jose because southwest cancels so many flights, one man tells us his sister was calling every rental car company in the area to try to get them a ride back to pasadena. a woman tells us she believes she bought the last bus ticket from san jose to palm springs. amtrak and san jose. one can't find anything until after the 30th. today doesn't look any better for passengers hoping to get out of town on their southwest flights. according to the latest numbers

from flight aware you can see several hundred more flights have been canceled in and out of the bay area. the most impacted airports are oakland. 124 flights, all those are southwest. sjc 147 flights, again, all those are southwest, all cancellations. the majority of those are southwest. almost 4,300 cancellations, about 2,500 of which are southwest. u.s. secretary of transportation pete buttigieg says southwest airlines meltdown is unacceptable. >> and we're going to have to take a deeper look at what's going on with their scheduling systems, other issues that may have contributed to this because while we all understand you can't control the weather, this has clearly crossed the line from an uncontrollable weather situation to something that is the airline's direct responsibility. >> we are doing everything we can to return to a normal operation.

costa boulevard. police say a man was running from the apartment holding two knives when they found him, he refused to drop the knives and started to cut himself. police then shot the man with beanbag rounds until he was subdued. he was taken to the hospital. the fire was intentionally set. flames and smoke damaged three apartments. nobody else was hurt. winter weather brought serious rainfall and dangerously strong winds to the sierra. this is video of heavenly ski resort in south lake tahoe. the area saw 111-mile-per-hour winds on the upper mountains along with at least 4 inches of snow. strong winds forced the resort to close all the gondola rides and some lifts all day yesterday. a look at current conditions at palisades. it's blowing up there and a cold one at that. meteorologist vianey arana has been tracking what to expect up in the sierra.

a reported midair flight forced the plane to turn around from honolulu due to what the company said was the behavior of customers. the flight rescheduled for today. we're still working to learn exactly what led up to that incident. making it in the bay has been a little bit of a roller coaster this year. the once hot and high demand home buyers' market is seeing a cooldown with rising interest rates, many buyers are rethinking the possibility of purchasing a new home and sellers are now choosing to take their properties off the market. joining me to break down what we could see in the new year is bay area realtors jon and leslie foster. thanks for taking time to join us. looking forward to 2023, a fresh start, but home buyers are especially looking at the market right now. we've seen the cooldown.

what do you think we can expect? >> 2022 definitely gave us what i would call a healthy correction to some of the crazy and the frenziness we saw in our real estate market. we've seen inventory levels increase. to put that in perspective a little bit, inventory levels are still low looking at on average throughout the bay area maybe a one-month supply, which is low. meaning if no other homes got listed it would only take a month to sell the current inventory. putting in perspective about a year ago we were at a two-week supply. things have definitely normalized as a result of the rates increasing. >> we needed a market correction. it was just too crazy. buyers were going in with no contingencies. they were putting in offers they didn't have time to process. now buyers have the opportunity to take the time they need to find the perfect home. >> let's talk about the sellers themselves. in my neighborhood we either saw a lot of homes on the market for

a lot longer or people were pulling them off because they're not getting the price they expected. what can a seller be doing at this point? do they wait? do they hold off for spring when we see all the homes hit the market? what do you think? >> going back to inventory levels, they're extremely low right now so from an economic supply and demand issue if i was a seller i would be looking at right now in the first quarter of 2023 not a lot of competition, again, from the supply and demand standpoint that might be a good time to consider putting your home on the market. >> everybody is probably looking at a lot of their christmas bills coming in the mail. interest rates, though, when it comes to buying a house, i mean, this is the biggest purchase a family is going to probably make so they have to keep their eye on those as well. >> the most important thing in our opinion as a buyer is to just have a payment that you are comfortable with that fits your budget, that you can afford. a lot of creative loans to allow

folks who are near and far and want to be a part of the project. yes, it's taken a life of its own. >> amanda says she gets requests from across the bay area as to where that night stand should go next. new this morning heroic cardiologist going the distance to save two people during the monterey bay half marathon. >> the doctor was running in last month's race. ahead of him 67-year-old greg gonzalez collapsed without warning. dr. lome began cpr until paramedics arrived. at the finish line michael hellemond went down just as he was crossing the finish line. again, the doctor stepped in to perform cpr that delivered another life-saving shock to the heart. the trio reunited for the first time. as you can imagine emotions ran high. >> a second chance with my boys.

a beautiful view and it is a little cold especially up through parts of the north bay, napa, 36. some of the sheltered valley, satellite radar right now, we're clear, we're calm. the storm system now down through san diego but a lot of activity up ahead in the pacific northwest. if you are traveling along the grapevine to los angeles or san diego, folks are trying to get back with the flight cancellations, you will probably experience the fog through bakersfield and rain through southern california into san diego. hour by hour forecast by 7:00 a.m. still in the 30s and 40s. there's a dense fog advisory and increasing high clouds. the air feels refreshed. not expected for this week at

all. rain ahead late evening. it isn't until about 11:00 we see that line of showers pushing in. showers earlier like 9:00, 10:00. notice it's not as widespread from a quarter to half an inch for the higher peaks. at 3:30 another system rolls through. heavier pockets expected through santa cruz down through the south bay. right now this does not look as intense as what we saw on tuesday but because we've seen so much rain the flooding potential will be even more dangerous and i do imagine some

flood advisories and watches will go in effect friday into saturday. because we have a lot of saturated soil as far as the timing will this impact your new year's eve party. it will be cloudy and rainy. the biggest impacts are going to come during the day on saturday and by 10:00, 11:00, it could be making its exit to l.a. and san diego impacted by the line of storms heading into saturday. now january 2nd, monday, the first week of 2023, another storm system lines up. behind that a third system. we've hit about six or seven storms and that will kick us off with a rainy start to the week of january down through southern california. prep for a windy weekend
