right now at 4:30, tracking the storm. the wet weather back once again and it's here to stay. the preparations being made as even more rain is moving in ahead of the weekend. also, meteorologist, vianey arana, is timing out our new year's eve forecast. plus -- >> we're seeing animals, particularly dogs coming in in numbers we have never seen before. >> a growing problem for local shelters. more and more pets abandoned. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, apple tv and amazon fire and online. i am scott mcgrew.

marcus washington has the day off. >> i am laura garcia. yesterday's break in the rain was just enough time for public crews to clean up and prepare for the next storm. residents were grateful. >> these sandbags going to help a lot? >> i think this time they will because we got them the other day and it rained a whole day, and this next time will be three whole days, and we will see. >> the utility says make sure you are ready for power outages. let's bring in vianey arana who is tracking the storm, a big one. >> yeah, the system that moved in overnight was not as intense as what we saw tuesday, so this is more of a light to moderate

storm. let's zoom in and see where there's a couple of pockets. along 880, and 580, and 680 through san ramon, we have moderate rain coming down. today's not the biggest storm. the bigger storm is lining up to make its move heading into friday and saturday, and you can see it right here on satellite radar. this will bring us a big plume of moisture. the concern leading into friday and saturday will be the saturated soil, because as you heard that resident mentioned, raining for three days in a row. the water has nowhere to go, and so i want to give you a closer look at weather headlines i will be guiding you through today. today's rain system will be light to moderate. heavy rain with more impactful system moves in friday into

saturday and that will create concerns for localized flooding. we will look at the weather into the sierra coming up in a minute. we're watching hillsides and trees so far, and no reports of any road closures because of that. we have slowing, though. a crash is on the shoulder and people are out of their vehicles, and it may be spectator slowing. i will check that out. over here we do have one lane blocked, south of 680 just past 84. use extra caution this morning. northbound does not have the closure because crews can't duty pavement work during this type of weather. use caution. look at the blue, that's

puddling and ponding throughout the north bay as well. we're learning new details about a scuffle between two passengers. today on the bay at oakland international with some of the passengers that just arrived home last night. >> reporter: weary passengers from honolulu wait for their bags. >> i thought we lucked out because our flight was not canceled, just delayed two hours. >> they were in flight two hours when she heard -- >> a seat being pushed back and ice cubes were -- >> the pilot said if you kids

don't stop fighting i will turn this plane back around and go back to honolulu, and i thought he was kidding. >> there was more drama midair, and a medical emergency occurred and it's unclear if it was related to the earlier disruption, and this comes as southwest is experiencing delays galore. more than 12,000 canceled this week, and 2,400 more. >> we have been warning of this for over five years. the last two years we have seen more meltdowns and they have been more severe. >> experts say it's a trifecta of bad weather and bad systems, and these passengers are thankful for the crew and -- >> to be home. i can't wait to be in my own bed and eat my own food.

china's lack of transparency about covid information. and health leaders say in the u.s. the total number of confirmed total covid cases topped 100 million this week. also around 400 people are dying each day from the virus. deaths dropped 90% from the pandemic peak in january of 2021. animal shelters across the bay say our economy is forcing families to surrender or abandon pets. the work local shelters are doing to combat the issue -- >> pit bulls, chihuahuas, you name it. animal shelters are flooded with pets. >> we are seeing dogs coming in in numbers we have never seen before. >> the santa clara animal

services say they are overflowing at 150% capacity. >> we don't have the public step in like before to adopt or foster, and we are going to have to face making euthanasia decisions we have not had to make in all of my decisions year. >> she believes families are abandoning or giving up their pets because of cost of living and vet services. a survey found the number two reason families have fewer pets now than three months ago is they can no longer afford to take care of them. it's not just shelters. spay and neuter non-profit clinics say they are also overwhelmed. >> we opened our schedule in the middle of december, and in five hours we had 400 requests.

good morning. it's 4:42. we have our storm reader mobile doppler radar scanning the skies and it's showing light to moderate rain moving through parts of the bay area right now, through fremont, san josé. if you are driving along 680 or 280, you will catch some of those pockets. we will talk about the heavier rain moving in in a couple minutes. yeah, you see a bolt through our walnut creek camera. that rain on the screen will be on the roadways as well.

to you. had to stop and think about that. the year has flown by. taking a live look outside overlooking downtown san josé this morning. the lights glistening. rain making this big return to the bay area. how long is this storm going to stick around? >> this one is a separate system from tuesday's and separate from

the one we will see tomorrow, and this is a preview of what to expect on how many storms we will have. this is considered light to moderate, so not as intense, and no watches or warnings in effect as of now, but we will have some starting tomorrow. we get the wet pavement and could be a concern for the morning commute. anytime you see wet roads, slow it down. and the radar is scanning some rain pushing through, and notice along hayward and san ramon as well, and morgan hill as well. not a lot of yellow or red on the map, and that indicates the majority of the rain is moderate to light at times, but it will be steady for the next hour or so before it begins to clear out. our next area of concerning lining up in the pacific northwest, and i will get to

that timing in a second. first, let's get a look at your can't temperatures. starting out in the mid-40s for napa. fremont, 48. we are running a few degrees warmer because of the return of the cloud cover and rain and that helps to trap some of the heat. 11 degrees warmer right now in novato. hour-by-hour outlook. what do we look at the 7:00 and 8:00 mark, we will continue to see the scattered showers but we will get a break between 10:00, 11:00, and even 2:00 for much of the south bay. that's going to start to move in through san francisco, half moon bay, and becoming widespread by this evening. at times we could see some of the heavier pockets pick up in the overnight hours. hour-by-hour forecast, it's going to be in the 40s to start out with rain at times, and at noon we will climb up in the 50s. partial clearing and the winds start to pick up, and then increasing rain especially in the north bay.

that storm system is moving in friday into saturday. i want to show you bullseye areas for concern. 3:00 a.m. on saturday, and if that system stalls out and lingers, they could see a lot of rain at once, and we will monitor for the possible flood concern risk. it will stall out there before it clears out. looks like saturday into sunday for new year's eve, you will be dry and that will be good. we will talk about our first rain chance coming up, but first let's check in with mike. >> we have wet roadways, and the green, of course, dominating the map on the road weather conditions as well. watch for the blue puddling and ponding. one alert for solano county up near nut tree, and there's slowing on west 880 there.

gilman, or just shy of all lanes were blocked for a short period of time but everything is off to the shoulder for now. there's an incident on the grid there, maybe flashing flights. right where 680 and 84 come together, there's more slowing and there's only one lane that gets through that narrow area as the lane shift happens westbound 84 out of livermore, pleasanton and into sunol. you can continue over towards the dublin interchange because that's a smooth drive. and watch these conditions despite light traffic. back to you. >> thanks, mike. big changes for the silver and black. the raiders benched their quarterback for the rest of the season. >> that means the 49ers will face a quarterback making his first nfl start on sunday. here's an early look at this new year's day match-up.
