life and her legacy. we do begin this morning with the news out of the vatican. pope benedict xvi has died at the age of 95. >> he has been ill and his health declined in recent days. we will look at his life and legacy and the complicated issues he leaves hint. we have molly hunter with reaction from the faithful. molly, good morning. >> reporter: peter and kristen, good morning. you see the huge crowds. many did not know the news would break. we arrived and started to speak with tourists and people offering their prayers. everyone felt it was important and meaningful they got to be around here faithful and

believers. we received word from the holy see and we understand his body will lie in state on monday in the basilica to bid final farewell. we know his funeral will take place on thursday at 9:30 a.m. as expected, pope francis will preside over the funeral mass. this is the first time a current pope presided over a former pope's funeral in centuries. no word on the details of the funeral or whether or not it is a state funeral. it is in st. peter's square. it is open to the public. the only detail we know is it is in the mode of simplicity as were his wishes. we assume benedict would be involved in the history setting of the planning of his funeral and burial. kristen and peter. >> molly hunter, thank you so much. he broke barriers. we want to bring in anne thompson who has the life and

legacy of the pope. anne, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, kristen. pope emeritus benedict was a scholar and strict enforcer of catholic doctrine and the first pope to meet with abuse victims. he will be defined by a shocking and courageous act. stepping down. the theology professor shocked the papacy and stepped down in 2013. >> i think it may be his finest legacy to the church. he brought the papacy into the modern age. >> reporter: 85 years old when he made the decision. benedict cited advanced age and the inability to give leadership. the cardinal edwin o'brian was in the room. >> a shocking silence for a

while. for a minute and a half or two. >> reporter: benedict left a church growing in africa and asia and tarnished by scandal in europe and u.s. the man many hoped would reform the bureaucracy from the church, was betrayed. his butler revealing fighting and corruption and speculation of the investigation into the scandal ordered by benedict dominated the final weeks of the papacy. the sexual abuse once dismissed the american church, penetrated the europe church. stories of molestation shook the most faithful. >> i express my deep sorrow to the innocent victims of the crimes. >> reporter: in the u.s. and united kingdom, he met privately

with victims and listened to the stories. the role of pope was not a natural fit. academic. he wanted to retire to bavaria to write books. at age 78, he was elected to succeed john paul ii. the most influential popes in history. benedict came with the cartoonish reputation. as cardinal joseph ratzinger, he was known as god's rottweiler. speaking out against climate change and putting solar panels on the vatican. benedict used an ipad to send his first tweet and setting up a youtube channel. benedict created a problem for the church. two living hopes.

he continued to wear white and took the name pope emeritus and moved into vatican city. a short walk from francis. at the end, benedict spent his final days out of sight from the church he led. a man of principle and great intellectual power deeply rooted in his faith. benedict leaves a complicated and mixed legacy that will be debated by scholars and catholics for years to come. kristen and peter. >> anne, it is extraordinary. you took us into the room that moment he announced he was going to retire. there has, of course, been so much speculation for years that pope francis might eventually step down with pope benedict's passing. what does this mean for the future of the papapapacy? >> reporter: pope francis said benedict opened the door to resignation to retirement, if you will, something that was

state. savannah captures, her legacy is the next generation of journalists. >> we send our love to her family. >> we will have more on barbara walters's legacy and most famous interviews later in the show. there is other news to get to today this morning, relief in the idaho community as the suspect accused of brutally murdering four college students has been arrested the 28-year-old bryan christopher kohberger was taken into custody in pennsylvania 2,500 miles from the murder site this has been a gut-wrenching case that stunned the small college town and infuriated the families of the college town. wehave dana griffin in moscow, idaho this morning with the latest. dana, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. according to law enforcement sources, dna played a key role in linking the murders to kohberger. how they got that evidence has yet to be revealed. this morning, a sigh of relief for a community on edge. 48 days after the murders of

four university of idaho students. >> we have an individual in custody who committed these horrible crimes. >> reporter: 28-year-old bryan christopher kohberger was taken into custody in monroe county, pennsylvania. drone video shows police murder. drone video shows police at the suspect's home on friday with the biggest public clue in the case is a white hyundai elantra was removed. the arrest comes the same day the crews cleaned out the home where kaylee goncalves, madison mogen, xana kernodle and ethan chapin were found murdered all four were asleep when they were attacked. some had defensive wounds. two other roommates home at the time were never hurt police say they were not involved this case has drawn national attention from internet sleuths who speculated about the suspect and motives, leading police to over 19,000 tips while dispelling unfounded rumors. police vowing this case would not go cold.

>> these murders have shaken our community and no arrests will ever bring back the young students however, we do believe justice will be found through the criminal process >> reporter: kohberger is listed as a ph.d. student in the department of criminal justice at washington state university investigators also revealed they have not found the murder weapon >> provide any details might taint the criminal prosecution or have alerted the suspect of her progress >> reporter: one of the missing pieces to the puzzle is a motive as the investigators connect the dots kohberger is expected to be in court on tuesday if he fights extradition, it could be several weeks if not months before he is brought back to idaho peter, kristen >> so much relief for that community. dana griffin, thank you. >> that is for sure. joe fryer is joining us now

good morning. thanks for joining us on this saturday, december 31st. i'm kira klapper. we're under a microclimate weather alert right now. rain is pouring hard across the bay area. we have new video just coming into our news room that shows flooding in west sonoma county. you can see it right there. this is on highway 1 near valley ford road west of petaluma. the road is closed in both directions. as you can see, there were signs warning drivers about the closure. officials warn if you see standing water, be sure to turn around and not drive into it. let's check in with cynthia with

georgia take on ohio state in the late game. the cinderella story of the season, tcu will go head to head with michigan in the early game. big day of football in house how woulds across the country. in washington this morning there is new fallout of a congressional committee released tax returns of former president trump after a years-long battle. republicans blasting the release saying it sets a bad precedent. lawmakers who support the move say the returns reveal important information. garrett haake has more on what the documents show. >> reporter: former president trump is vowing retribution against democrats in congress after a house committee made public six years of his federal tax returns on friday, ending the three-year legal battle that went all the way to the supreme court. >> the radical democrats' behavior is a shame upon the u.s. congress. this precedent must now be applied to the corrupt democrats themselves. >> reporter: the thousands of pages of the tax returns showed the former president paying

relatively little in federal taxes from 2015 through the end of his term, including a zero dollar federal tax bill in 2020 as his businesses struggled. the returns showing that despite a pledge to donate his $400,000 presidential salary, he reported no charitable contributions in . also showing the billionaire losing money in four of the six years appearing to undercut his success as a businessman. >> what trump does is collect money from businesses he has and the businesses lose money and he uses the losses to offset the income that flows into his pocket. he is a terrible businessman. >> reporter: the filing show he maintained foreign bank accounts in china, united kingdom and ireland. he had greater losses across 15

now more on the major headlines we are watching today. law enforcement officials made an arrest in the brutal murders of the four university of idaho students that took place in november. >> 28-year-old bryan christopher kohberger was apprehended 2,500 miles away from the crime scene in pennsylvania. >> for more on this case, we are joined by casey jordan and

professor at western connecticut state. casey, thank you for being here. >> good morning. >> casey, i want to get to this. clearly this is a major break in the case that many feared had gone cold. we had been waiting for answers for seven weeks here. we have learned more about this suspect. 28-year-old bryan kohberger. he was getting a ph.d. in criminology. he had a fascination with crime. while the authorities won't detail about anything of a motive, what does what we're learning about him tell you about a possible motivation for the murders? >> i wasn't surprised at all to find out he was studying criminology and his fellow students said he was interested in forensic psychology. we have seen with killers of this nature and serial killers. we don't know if he would have

committed this crime again or in the past. they can be groupies of criminology. doing case study after case study and wanting to become experts. helps fellow students in the ph.d. program said he was awkward and he would be quiet and give them long stares. the biggest thing is he wanted to be an expert on everything. he would overexplain everything. he wanted to be super academic. they turned to class after these murders happened and he was extremely isolated and perhaps manic. >> casey, we know investigators were pouring through 20,000 tips. keeping the details of the investigation very close to the vest. they had been trailing this suspect for some time. what do you think ultimately led to this arrest? >> the white hyundai elantra was the lynchpin. it was footage from a door bell

camera or security footage camera on a residence on a side street that they were able to track down to the very specific timeframe when cars would pass through at 4:00 in the morning. not that many cars passing around at 4:00 a.m. focusing on the white hyundai elantra. i suspect the car had come back into the area and picked up more than once. we know sometimes killers like to return to the scene of the crime. find the hyundai elantra that belongs to the student in the area and the profile would have been somebody 18 to 28 and male who lived in the area. i don't believe he knew the students, but once they had the hyundai and then they were able to do familial dna from dna at the crime scene and find distant relatives of the current suspect and use the profile to figure out the number one person of interest.
