and problems are starting to pile up. good morning. it's saturday, december 31st, the last day of 2022. thank you so much for joining us. we are under a microclimate weather alert and we have live team coverage. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in fremont monitoring conditions there. cinthia pimentel is tracking rising creeks and rivers. first let's check in with meteorologist vee nay arana. >> it's packing a punch as we were forecasting into the overnight and early morning hours, we've seen a lot of rain accumulating, especially through the higher peaks in the north bay. satellite radar, you can see a lot of rain starting to focus more over san francisco. you can see some of the green here showing light to moderate rain. into san francisco, oakland as well. timingwise we're going to continue to see a lot of this rain push through about 9:00

p.m. it will remain until the system clearly clears out. if you're near concord, danville, traveling near 580, expect to see heavier ponding waters. brentwood as well. in the south bay, timingwise, out of the line of storms passing through san francisco, notice it makes its way through ben lomond around 7:36. in scotts valley around 7:46. the stretch of highway 17 as well around 7:00, 8:00. as it lingers into 9:10, we get the concern for debris flows, rock slides, mudslides, trees down, things like that. timingwise for the south bay, notice 7:24 in campbell for the next 20 minutes, it starts moving into san jose. los gatos around 7:32. right now we're seeing rain shadowing in through morgan hill

which we've been seeing since last night. flood watches and warnings do remain in effect. for color purposes, notice the green is a flood watch. the red here is that flood warning. this is going to be in place for sonoma county through 10:30. there's already flooding happening. also added to the list, san francisco, half moon bay. we've also seen issues along half moon bay. in san francisco a lot of the roadways can become clogged. we could see that flooding occurring in some of the streets as well in san francisco through about 10:30 that will be in place. mountain totals right now will continue to see an additional potential for two inches on top of what we've seen into the overnight hours. we're also concerned about the wind as well. i'll get to that in a second. first, we want to monitor the creek levels. for that. let's send things over so to cinthia pimentel. >> the national weather service has a tool where we can see the river forecast, river observations. that's what we're going to walk you through this morning. let's start in green valley

creek. this is near guerneville. there's a lot of data here. we have the legend stage. this is the river stage in feet. these are the days on the bottom of your screen. there's action stages in yellow, minor flooding and moderate flooding let's take a flashback to tuesday. we saw it reach a little above the minor flooding stage. fast forward to what we're seeing, just over 61.5 feet in those low lying areas. if you see anybody that lives around those areas, just give them a warning as this will continue to rise as we see more rain fall through about 10:00 this morning. be careful of that. willowbrook, in petaluma, the action stage just over 33.5 feet. on tuesday it was starting to reach that minor flooding, and we have fast forwarding it to today.

we're over 38.5 feet. the water levels will continue to rise as this rain pounds the bay area. as we go through next week with more rain coming ahead, this will be a concern. we'll be watching it all for you. for now, i'll send it back to vianey. >> with a lot of the creeks rising, there's a lot of trees around it. the winds will be a factor and the potential for them to come down as the roots up lift, until about 10:00 a.m. we saw the peak winds happening between 4:00 and 7:00 a.m. some of the higher elevations, did start to see gusty winds upwards of 40, 50-plus miles per hour. notice i fast forward this about 7:30. san francisco gusty, 40-plus miles per hour. up through mt. diablo in the concord area, 38, 36 miles per hour. as the cold front sweeps through, it's going to kick up the winds as well heading into about 12:00, 1:00, we start to see that kind of diminish as far

as gusts of still leaving behind 20-muss-mile-per-hour winds. we're already seeing a lot of issues, and this is the cause of concern, especially for local residents. let's send things over to our very own bob redell. how are things looking out there? >> it's coming down in fremont. we're at the niles staging area across highway 84 behind me. we're on the west end of niles canyon. of course, you can see alameda creek right here in the foreground. we were out here on thursday and it didn't look anything like this. the alameda creek is now at roughly 7 feet. that's two to three feet higher than it was the other day, and we expect this to hit 8 feet later this afternoon which fortunately is about a foot below flood stage. so the prediction is that this will not hit flood stage. you can see it's flowing really good. the driving conditions out here

are very dangerous. this was highway 84 through niles canyon. around 5:30 this morning, you can see a small rock slide in the middle of the road. other areas we saw debris loosening along the wall. we've seen public works out here. hopefully they can keep the road clear. yesterday afternoon there was a much larger mudslide along that same road, highway 84 was shut down through niles canyon for a few hours while workers brought in heavy equipment to remove that debris. >> i seen they closed off the canyon. someone told me that there was rock slides and whatnot. that's when i start to really get worried. >> that was kristen munoz who lives nearby out of her truck. she says she knows other unhoused people whose tents collapsed. she's very worried about how they'll do during this much larger storm. we're in the end of miles canyon in fremont.

my advice, if you don't need to be on the roads this morning, don't go outside. live in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> good advice, bob. hopefully you can find some shelter until the next time we see you. thanks so much. new video just into our news room showing flooding in west sonoma county. take a look. this is highway 1 near valley ford road west of petaluma. there are signs warning drivers that the road is closed in both directions. officials warn if you see standing water, turn around and don't drive into it. the north bay is under a wind advisory until 8:00 this morning. so 50 more minutes to go. that coupled with the soaked ground from all of this week's rain is raising concerns that the north bay could see more falling debris and power outages as another round hits today. the san anselmo cream has been rising. this video shows the water rising quickly as nearby businesses have seen this

before, they've already set up sandbags. in recent years it has reached flood stage causing all sorts of headaches for them. all over the area there are slick roads making things tricky for drivers. in rohnert park, the chp says wet roads is part of the reason a driver ended up in a ditch. burn scars also are a concern in the north bay as officials warn those previously burned area could be more prone to devastating mudslides. all this weather forcing some to rethink their new year's eve plans. >> i was supposed to drive to tahoe tomorrow morning. yeah, that's not happening. >> marin county reopened its emergency shelter for the unhoused for the third time this month. county officials clarify it's the first time they're doing it for the rain. the previous two openings were for freezing temperatures. this new storm is causing power outages across northern california. here is a live look at the

must head out, please be careful on the roads out there. there is a lot of standing water on our bay area free weighs. we want to get back out to bob redell live in fremont. bob, you're starting to see downed trees across the bay area. >> reporter: we are. unfortunately we expect there to be more. good morning, kira. as this rain is coming down more and more, and, of course, this is not our first storm. the ground is becoming more saturateted. the s soil is looser. we knoww of at least two trees dodown in san franciscsco. thisis iss v video thatt came ie news roooom overnighght. this iss the 100 block of franklin i in the city. theyey did come d down overnigh. a public works crew was waiting on chainsaws to take the trees apart and clear the roadways. this is what it looks like highway 1 and valley ford, west of petaluma is flooded it looks like people are still

driving through that closure. remember, you want to be careful when driving through standing water because you don't always know how deep it is. you also don't know if there's an undercurrent that can sweep your car away. back at alameda creek, you can see it's approaching flood stage but not predicted to hit flood stage. it's flowing very good. this is something you want to keep an eye out. there's a lot of rain out there and creeks that could be flooding. you want to be aware of that. for more on when this rain is going to stop, hopefully soon vianey. >> the big question is will it stall out and when will it exit? a lot of the times we're seeing these fast-moving systems, when they do stall out, it drops a lot of rain at once. we're talking of .5 to 1 inch. we still have a plume of moisture to the pacific northwest. using our storm ranger, we have rain coming in in santa rosa.

this is the reason why through sonoma county. they went ahead and issued a flood warning which means imminent threat for floods. so about 10:30, it's going to keep piling up. it is going to move out at some point. i do want to show you where the rain is really coming down right now. concord, brentwood, danville, through ben lolomond. we start to see the rain ramp up over the san ka krus mountains. timingwise, 8:02. 8:10 evergreen. this shifts more south bay around 7:30. notice campbell at about 7:24. that's what we're going to be seeing as far as the timing. timingwise about 8:00, i talked about how it starts to focus more in the south bay. santa cruz, the reds and purples, higher rain rates. fast forward to 10:00, 11:00, the flood warnings are set to

expire because of this. you see the rain finally move out of the north bay and the focus becomes more towards the santa cruz mountains. debris flows are always a possibility there. we have a ton of rain on top of it. it looks like the rain making an dpit for new year's eve, i'll check in on how much rain we've seen in the correction. kingt ya. >> as you saw on bob redell's live picture, alameda creek rushing there in the east bay. in the north bay let's take a look at the fairfax creek live camera. i was taking a look at the latest numbers just above two feet right now. that action stage like i was talking about a little bit ago, around 4 feet. still a situation to keep monitoring. let's take it out to alameda creek where bob redell was this morning. i sent this over to him. just so you know, we have the team coverage going on. right now at 5:00 a.m., december

31st, last day of the year, we'll rise to about 8 feet by the time we get into the evening hours. the action stage is nine feet for the alameda creek and the moderate flooding is at 10 feet. a lot of rain pushing through the bay bay a yeah. it will push through the east bay and the south bay. definitely a situation we'll keep monitoring. as far as rain totals go, a decent amount in the mount tam area. more rain ahead in the bay area. i'll send it to vianey for the details. >> this is what it's like like for tonight. the storm lingers, 5:00, 6:00, it makes its exit moving on through central california, down through southern california. this is going to be great because it's going to give us an opportunity to enjoy our fireworks. the only thing i would be monitoring would be around the fireworks area, if there's any

weather impacts from earlier, that could be an area, for example, concern of ponding water around the roads. by the afternoon, scattered showers. i mentioned that rain moving out just in time for your new year's day plans. by sunday, we get a happy new year. this rain is very beneficial for us. we love to see it, just not all at once, right? it's california. this is going to be very helpful for us as we head towards the next couple months. this is when we want to see the rain. december is acting like december. this is pretty common to see as far as a weather pattern goes. notice by tuesday we get a rain break. on wednesday, that will be our next storm to monitor along with gusty winds. the thing is we need breaks in between these major storms for good reason. you've been hearing us talk about saturated soil. this gives us time to dry out. as we inch closer to tuesday, we get another system that moves through. by monday, that was a bit of a weaker system that will bring about .25 to .5 inch. wednesday that subtropical

moisture we've been showing you, the river and the sky on satellite radar starts to ramp up again, potentially dropping two to four inches to some of the higher peaks as well. if you take a look, looking ahead 20 next friday, it does look like we'll enter our first weekend o ch the new year as well on an active note because we've got a series of storms lined up in the extended outlook. potentially all the way through the 10th. that gives you an idea of how much more rain we've got to come. you know, the thing with this, it's going to bring an elevated hazard. we have to keep our guard up through the week. i want to say i'm grateful for the rain. shout out to mother nature. give us a break to catch up and prepare for it, right? >> yeah. we need the rain. we always say that. it's a great way to start the new year. boy, we could use some breaks in between. i was filling in earlier this week and i was saying this is like a symbolic washing away 2022. >> i like that. >> isn't it nice? we were dealing with the air quality issue earlier this week.

will keep the job until one minute after midnight early tomorrow morning. mahan took the oath of office on thursday early because the city clerk's office is closed over the weekend. that way there won't be a gap in office if anything important happens over the weekend like this weather. now to a live look at the roads this morning. wet no matter where you look. the chp is urging everyone to ring in 2023 responsibly by designating a sober driver. the department's holiday maximum enforcement period already is under way. all available chp officers will be working through the holiday to make sure drivers are safe this weekend. last year the chp says 29 people were killed and nearly 500 impaired drivers were arrested. the chp issued more than 2,300 citations for speeding. one san jose officer tells us drivers need to be cautious, especially if it's raining. >> if we're driving too fast for

we're going to continue to see. we're in the thick of it right now. it moves in late overnight into the early morning hours. bafr it already moved in over the north bay, that's why we're seeing those issues, especially on the roads. 59 degrees. because of the rain, i want to guide you through where it currently stands right now and what to expect. notice san francisco starting to get a couple of pockets using our mobil doppler storm ranger. the rain will follow you through midday, 1:00. timingwise, if you're going to be traveling to l.a., remember the system impacting us here is going to move through central california, eventually ending up in southern california, l.a. your travel through los banos, it will start to ramp up as well. the stretch through santa cruz, you want to be careful. 8:21, notice we see the storm moving through. over the next 4 hours, until

about 10:00 p.m. tonight, the flood watch will remain in place. we'll monitor the runoff and also winds have been a big issue at some of the higher peaks, a wind advisory remains in place until about 10:00 a.m. that's also what's been causing a lot of concern with downed trees, potential power outages, all of that. we're also monitoring the creek levels and the streams, but we want to send things over to our very own bob redell who has been monitoring the conditions in fremont. first let's check in with cinthia pimentel who has a look how the sierra is doing. >> if you are in the sierra, stay there. you don't want to travel. let's take a look live at palisades. a lot of snow has already piled up. there's more ahead as the storm rolls through the bay area, through the sierra and through the first week of december. let's take it back to my graphics really quick. we can see there are several warnings in place in tahoe. so we can see that the winter storm warning here in pink

extends from the sierra down to yosemite as well. this is through tomorrow morning. snow will be piling up 1-3 feet, upwards of five. gusty winds, of course, road closures. so travel definitely not recommended. we've been checking on the train controls, too. if you for any reason have to head up there, make sure you have all those emergency tools ready to go. extending it a little bit wider, we have a flood advisory that extends from tahoe into the bay area as well. the notice in tahoe is through sunday morning. those rain amounts in the mountains, three to five inches around the tahoe basin. 4-7 on the sierra crest. flooding of rivers, creeks and streams could become an issue. i want to show you this red which is the avalanche warning that extends from tahoe down through areas of yosemite. if you have plans to head to yosemite, you might want to rethink that as well. through sunday morning, the strong winds and heavy snow.

travel definitely not recommended. as the week goes on, we could see upwards of 100 inches of snow piling up. we'll take a look at the reservoirs because the snow will translate into melt water. for now, back to kira. >> cinthia, thanks. this morning there are growing concerns as creeks start to rise across the bay area. we're going to go back to "today in the bay's" bob redell who is continuing our live team coverage. wet out there. you're monitoring the alameda creek in fremont, an often trouble spot. how is it looking so far? >> reporter: the water flow is tremendous. we were out here on thursday and the water was actually very low. now here we are, 48 hours later and the water is definitely up 2-3 feet. you can see debris floating. we're at the nile staging area. highway 84 in the background. this is the west end of niles canyon. the creek right now, don't even

call it a creek. it looks like a river to me. we think it's come up in the hour since we've been here. forecast to hit 8 feet this afternoon which fortunately is not flood stage. flood stage is 9 feet. according to predictions, this will be a food below flood stage. again, this gives you a sense of how much rain we are seeing. the driving conditions are really dangerous out here. this is highway 84 through niles canyon, around alameda creek around 5:30, you can see a small rock slide in the middle of the road. you can see debris loosening from the valley wall. we have seen a public works truck with a plow going back and forth through that area. yesterday afternoon that was not the case. there was a much larger mudslide along that same road, highway 84 was shut down for a few hours while workers brought in hef swri equipment to remove the debris. >> i seen they closed off the canyon. someone told me that there was rock slides and whatnot. that's when i really get

our news room that shows flooding on highway 92. is happening in sections from skyline boulevard to main street. this is in half moon bay. that section of the highway is shut down. cal fire says there is no estimated time on when it will reopen. there also are reports of small mudslides in that same area. all this rain opened a sinkhole on highway 12 in santa rosa. this is on the westbound side near dutton avenue. the left lane is closed while chp crews work to repair it. the chp says anyone who can should just avoid the area. otherwise expect delays. stay with us all weekend long as we continue to follow this series of storms hitting the bay area. we are streaming online at nbcbayarea.com. we're also on roku, fire and apple tv plus. don't forget, you can also download our free nbc bay area app to track the storms on our interactive radar. back to that breaking news

this morning, that pope emeritus benedict xvi has died. a live look at st. peter square where his funeral will be held on thursday. the 95-year-old's health was declining rapidly. earlier in the week pope francis announced that benedict who at 2013 became the first pontiff in 600 years to step down was very sick. on monday the body of the pope emeritus will be in st. peter's bailica so people can say their final goodbyes. his funeral will take place on january 5th in st. peter's square. pope francis will preside. the last time a current pope presided over a funeral for a previous pope was 700 years ago. we learned broadcasting legend barbara walters died at the age of 93. she first rose to prominence during her 11 years as a co-heft on nbc's "today" show. the first woman to hold such a

start to see some of the heavier pockets as well along highway 17. timingwise, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. i mean that in the form of sunshine. we get a lot of rain through 8:00, 9:00, 10:00. a lot of the focus and emphasis down to the south bay, pretty much through 11:00, 12:00. it continues to stall out over the south bay. looking ahead, notice by 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, still getting shower activity. but it clears out making way for a lovely new year's eve night. let's take a look at storm totals in the last 24 hours. definitely a lot of rain in marin county, over 4 inches. in the north bay these numbers will pile up as the storm did hit them overnight and early this morning. as we go through palo alto and san jose, rain shadowing effects. all that is piling up on the santa cruz mountains. close to 5 inches in the last 24 hours. we could see 3-5 more inches as

the day goes on. our water year, these numbers are starting to get closer to where we should be for this time of year up in the north bay. really we're looking at a surplus in areas such as oak lapd, livermore and san jose. we hope we get more rain, and it's looking like that. something we are looking forward to this coming week is the drought monitor map. even the week after that, we could see areas in red, possibly turn to orange, the lighter colors and eliminate the drought in some of those areas hopefully. we'll keep monitoring it for you. >> you mentioned the drought monitor. we have more incoming rain. let's prep you for the first week of january. notice two storms start to set up. we get the break. remember, break into sunday, early monday, and on tuesday we start to see a line of showers move through. that's going to be a weaker system. the next big system will move in wednesday into thursday. this is looking like an at feesh

tap, widespread all the way through downtown l.a. that could bring in 5-6 inches of rain. next weekend, 7th, 8th, and 9th, more storms are lining up. i looked at runs through the 12th, it's looking like an active first week. rain estimates will be impactful for the reason being we've already seen several inches. notice six to seven inches. all the highlighted areas up to the burn scares will continue to be an issue. your seven-day forecast, though, we love to see the rain. so i want to emphasize that, yes, these are good things, especially when you take a look at the drought monitor. all of these things are going to start to populate on that drought monitor. although we've been in extreme drought for quite some time, any rain is good news. we're monitoring the issues piling up because of this storm. we want to give you a live look at sfo where neblt on "today in the bay" we'll tell you about the flight delays being

afternoon to rise another foot to 8 feet which fortunately is not flood stage. flood stage is nine feet. we're showing you this to give you a sense of how much rain we're seeing. you'll see creeks like this throughout the bay area that will be approaching their flood stages today. i want to show you video we shot earlier this morning. this was on highway 84 through niles canyon around 5:30. you can see there was a small rock slide in the road, other debris. you can tell the valley walls are loosening. that is an area of concern. we did see a truck with a plow attached to it driving back and forth trying to keep the road clear. this is video from yesterday afternoon when there was a much more serious mudslide along that same road which actually shut down highway 84 through niles canyon for a few hours until the workers were able to clear it up. this is new video into our news room. this is major flooding on highway 101 near oyster point in

south san francisco. you can see there was standing water in both directions. at least one rear-end car accident and reports of people spinning out in the rain. when you're out there driving -- kira, you and i were talking about this driving into work this morning. i tell you, i have a large vehicle with good tires. i was definitely going below the speed limit, driving 35 in a 45, that sort of thing. if you're out this morning, you want to be careful on the roads. >> thanks, bob, for all your reporting. hope you get dry soon. >> bob redell going out there so you don't have to. a lot of good advice. with bob we were looking the alameda creek in niles. we want to take it to the north bay. let's start off with the mark west. this is what i've been keeping an eye on. currently looking at the flood monitor stage just a little bit above, i believe, 51 feet. we have a little bit of ways to go. we're also looking at the other cream around the bay area, especially around martin county,

fairfax cream, saint en sell mow cream. i was looking at the peninsula. that rain has moved from the north bay down into the peninsula, the south bay. i believe one of them that is starting to go into that flooding stage is belmont. i believe it's around san carlos. i'll keep an eye on that on all platforms. fianey, you have more on the extended outlook. >> the timing of the storm was important for flooding. it's new year's eve. people are curious to know are we going to see the rain move out in time for me to enjoy some fireworks? well, the direct impact from the aftermath, you'll probably have to deal with that until the 5:00, 6:00 p.m. hour. as the rain clears out, it will be a nice nice for viewing the fireworks. keep in mind it's going to be a little muggy and humid because of the atmospheric river. aside in that, notice early sunday morning we wake up to some sunshine. we'll notice pockets of clear into the afternoon as well. we sort of stay dry through monday morning's commute before
