right now at 4:30, an all-new storm is brewing. a live look outside this morning across the bay area. it's calm and dry. a new system is once again set to move in. this comes after a powerful storm hit over the weekend causing flooding and downed trees. meteorologist kari hall is tracking when it gets here and how long you're going to need to hold on to that umbrella. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. and good monday morning to you. a dry monday so far. i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington is going to take the week off. >> yes, happy new year to you. i'm laura garcia. let's get right to that top story. the cleanup that is still under

way in several bay area cities, the weekend storm damaged homes, flooded roads and closed down many businesses. on the left video out of the bayview neighborhood in san francisco, the rushing water inside of a home was going down the stairs. >> on the right you can see the flooded intersections along el camino in san mateo, a couple of cars got stuck. can you see them breaking out a window. not much time to recover. a whole new set of storms headed our way. meteorologist kari hall is tracking it all. good morning. good morning. as if we haven't already had enough there are several storms lining up in the pacific. the first one moves in today, so we do continue our microclimate weather alert. even though the storm we see today will be a lot weaker, what we're expecting will be gusty winds at times at about 20 to 30 miles per hour. as far as rain today, we're at about a quarter of an inch to about three-quarters of an inch of rain in participates of the santa cruz mountains, and the sierra will see another 4 to 9
4:32 am
inches of snow today. as we look at the time line, it gets here about 10:00 this morning first starting in the north bay, moving into parts of the peninsula and even approaching the south bay at about that hour. as we go into more of the afternoon, we're going to see the rain filling in. and for some of our hills in the north bay, we're going to see it quickly changing over to snow. we're going to continue to see that rain moving through with some scattered showers possible even as we go into the afternoon and into this evening. but once again rainfall totals with all of this for today at about a quarter inch to about three-quarters of an inch, but it's coming on an already saturated ground. we do have more storms on the way, and i'll be tracking that with another update coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you very much, kari. this morning people across the east bay are picking up after damage from the storm including the oakland zoo. the zoo's popular glow-fari program had to close due to a gaping hole in the ground after the storm. alyssa goard explains what it
4:33 am
will take to reopen. >> reporter: lots of people have been driving up here to the entrance of the oakland zoo, many of them with tickets to the glowfari event only to be greeted with disappointing news from security. >> this is not the way we wanted to start 2023. >> reporter: the entrance to the oakland zoo now impassable. where cars used to drive through, the road has caved in, revealing what the zoo describes as a 10 foot by 10 foot sinkhole. the zoo says this was caused by a collapsed culvert which connects to a creek overburdened by a historic amount of rain waters. >> when you have this level of volume and velocity of water, there's really nothing you can do. this is really unprecedented. >> reporter: zoo staff say the animals are all safe, and employees will continue to come by and take care of them, but the zoo will be closed to the public until at least january 17th while the entrance is
4:34 am
repaired. >> this may look initially like a sinkhole and it could be circular or something like that, but then it's revealed this is a stream crossing and that's the likely cause for what happened here. >> reporter: usgs engineer ryan collins says with the big weather event in the bay area this weekend, it's not surprising to see the effects of erosion like this. >> they can occur quite rapidly. >> reporter: but the damage was surprising to these guests. >> we had tickets for glowfari. >> reporter: they pulled up only to learn they wouldn't get to go. >> i thought if there was damage, they might let us know. they might have time to let us know. i guess they didn't. >> reporter: the zoo says it's talking about possibly extending the lit-up event once they reopen, but right now there's just too much uncertainty. >> we have another atmospheric river event coming through this week. we have to let that rain get through us and see where we
4:35 am
land. >> reporter: the zoo says everyone who had tickets for the glowfari event will get a full refund and the refund should come to you automatically. alyssa goard, "today in the bay." meanwhile, people in the south bay on cleanup mode as "today in the bay's" marianne favro reports in east palo alto the damage is worse than they expected. >> reporter: there is a huge cleanup job under way right now here at this apartment complex on manhattan avenue. you can see all of the mud and debris here. last night the water flooded so much it rose above the wheel wells of most of the vehicles here. they've been trying to pump it out. in san mateo, cars are still under water. at least three vehicles remain nearly submerged after water flooded this underpass. jim garibaldi was here and watched a woman drive her car onto the flooded street. >> she basically lost traction
4:36 am
and it floated all the way on the other side and submerged. probably took maybe two minutes, three minutes. we saw taillights and that was basically it for maybe a minute and after that it went completely under water. >> reporter: jim called 911. minutes later a san mateo police officer arrived. >> he wanted to know where the car was because he couldn't see it. it was submerged. i told him it's over there and there's somebody in it. there's somebody in it. he took off his jacket and jumped right on in. >> reporter: jim says the officer rescued the woman, and she was taken away in an ambulance. flooding also created problems in east palo alto in the san francisquito creek started spilling over banks turning streets into rivers. water rushed into this underground parking garage of an apartment complex on manhattan avenue. crews are using electric pumps and muscle power to clear the mud and water.
4:37 am
but when bryan sainz family made it to their minivans parked in the garage, they were devastated. >> our four vehicles are completely gone. they're totaled. we checked on them not that long ago and the water got into the intakes, the motor, and brakes got really muddy. >> reporter: now he's left wondering how he and his family will get to work 20 minutes away. >> we're not sure what to do about going to work. most likely it's a pretty bad situation. >> reporter: at this home, water seeped into the garage leaving the owner checking for damage. >> it looks like furniture and dry wall. >> reporter: with more rain ahead, they're bracing for potentially more flooding. the big concern is as we get more rain branches and logs could get jammed up underneath the bridges as the creek levels rise, and that could cause even more flooding. marianne favro, "today in the

bay." >> now while you may guess the rain impacting local reservoirs as well. this is in san martin. in santa clara county it almost overflowed at the height of the storm over the weekend. it's receing now. valley water says the reservoir gained more than 15 feet and is at 103% capacity. creeks feeding into the reservoir are receding, the creek itself is flooding. people are thrilled to have a full reservoir. >> we're in a long-term persistent drought. you get a storm like that and some damage, it doesn't look too bad. >> valley water monitoring san francisquito creek. >> if you want to know when the next storm will hit your

a very good monday morning to you. the first monday of 2023 as we take a live look outside overlooking downtown san jose where it is dry for the moment. we are tracking that forecast. we welcome back meteorologist kari hall. >> happy new year to you. >> you as well. it's been definitely a big start in terms of weather with all of these storms that have been lining up and rolling on through. we do have more on the way. so as we take a look at our wide view, we can see what's coming our way for today. so right now it's cloudy and the ground is still saturated, but we are going to see a weak storm coming in for today. in santa rosa it is a cold start. we're right now in the upper 30s and it's mostly clear now, but we'll see more clouds moving in. at about 10:00 here is where the rain begins as our temperatures stay in the low 40s. we only make it up to 48 degrees
4:48 am
today this is definitely a colder storm as our temperatures head for the low 50s for today across the bay area. and the rain begins at about 10:00 to 11:00 for much of the bay area and then continuing to roll on through. it will be once again colder and windy so we'll start to see that change over to a wintry mix. elsewhere we'll see scattered showers continue throughout today even into tonight. it finally looks like it's clearing around midnight and we'll have another chance to let that water soak in and dry out. but this is what's ahead on wednesday. an atmospheric river once again returning to the bay area. this is going to be another really big storm and it's going to bring in potentially a lot of big impacts with the flooding and the downed trees just like we saw but this one is coming on the heels of what we had over the weekend. and then going into the next few days next monday there looks to be another big storm coming in and then another one rolling in
4:49 am
next tuesday. about three-quarters of an inch of rain for the north bay. about a quarter inch for the rest of us. once that next atmospheric river moves in and then for next week there could be even more on top of that where we could have another 9 inches of rain in parts of the north bay. as far as sierra snow, for the first wave it will be cold but only bringing 4 to 9 inches of snow to the sierra. going into the end of the week, another foot or two and once again it's been very busy and a lot of heavy snow over the past several days. looking at breezy winds today some of those gusts could reach about 30 to 40 miles per hour especially in some of the hills.
4:50 am
tomorrow looks like a bit of a break and then on wednesday and thursday is when the next atmospheric river comes in. it lingers into early friday and then on saturday into sunday there's still more rain in the forecast and our temperatures aren't warming up much. we're only looking at highs in the upper 50s. looking at san francisco, temperatures in the 50s today, gusty winds, off and on rain. as we go throughout the week we have to watch out for the impacts of more flooding, more downed trees and gusty winds at times and may see a chance of a few isolated thunderstorms going into the week. a lot of indoor plans over the next few days and, of course, we are just keeping an eye on that water that continues to rise on our creeks and rivers. scott and laura? 4:50. developing now, police in oakland investigating the city's first homicide of 2023. this happened near the intersection of international

more global than ever before. mark barger has a preview. >> reporter: america certainly does have talent, but turns out most of the rest of the planet has talent, too. >> i'm going to tell you right now, it is the world's got talent. >> reporter: they have pulled together past winners and fan favorites from the u.s. edition of the show. >> i was very surprised about how emotional i got because i've only been hosting this thing for about four years. >> reporter: those american acts are competing against performers from some of the more than 70 countries with their own editions of "got talent." >> i feel here is the melting pot, everyone coming together again showing their act, and it's been the most incredible experience. >> reporter: even if it didn't necessarily start that way. >> i thought we made a huge mistake and then the following day, thank god, better and better and better. >> reporter: there was the question of how well some of the international acts would translate state side.

like we'll see much lighter rainfall compared to what we've seen recently. so as we take a live look outside in san jose, we are seeing the dry conditions for now through 8:00 and then at 10:00 we start to see some spotty showers moving in. it does get heavier at times as we go throughout the day just off and on. make sure you're keeping the heavier jacket and umbrella handy as we see the rain coming in. let's take it hour by hour. we see the rain spreading across parts of the bay area and where we see the yellows and oranges that's really intense rainfall that will continue to move in near mendocino and sonoma counties. some of that heavy rain makes it into marin at about 1:00 this afternoon and much of the rest of the bay area including the east bay at 4:00 to 5:00 today. so at times really heavy rain, but
