incoming storm, even more rain is forecast beyond that. >> i didn't realize it would be a problem or i would have done this the other day. >> we're trying to be more prepared this time. >> san ramon creek went over its bank over the weekend. some streets turning into raging rivers. we saw road crews working in the night still cleaning up mud slides from new year's eve. meteorologist kari hall is timing out this forecast because another big storm is headed our way. we are getting ready for this storm to arrive. this is looking like not as strong as the storm we had over the weekend but very close, and we know the ground is saturated. so now we already have the flood watches up for the entire bay area, and we're also watching for the potential of more swift moving creeks and rivers and heavy sierra snow that could close the roads once again over the next seven days we have three storms in the forecast. this first one is moving in with that connection to the tropics.
5:02 am
another atmospheric river, a pineapple express, one of those storms that has enhanced moisture as a result of that connection, to the tropics in hawaii. and then we have the rain coming in early tomorrow morning at 3:00. we'll start to see the rain coming in to the coastline and spreading across the bay area going throughout the morning with waves of at times heavy rain especially for tomorrow afternoon. i'll be tracking all of that. vianey has been watching the roads. good morning. good morning. and we are seeing an overall pretty nice picture when it comes to the bay bridge. no metering lights on just yet. it's been pretty light. we've seen some of the commute build in through the tri-valley. another stretch i want to give you a heads-up about, talking about the mud slides near the felton area, along route 9 closed in both directions. vernon street to glengary road. all of this red impacting highway 17, that connector right there between santa cruz and scotts valley seeing delays as well. as far as your drive times, bridges right now looking good,

"today in the bay's" brie jackson live in d.c. kevin mccarthy of bakersfield wants to be house speaker, but he's experiencing a lot of pushback. >> reporter: he is. he's hoping to be house speaker and he is showing some confidence that he will become house speaker but the bottom line is it's not certain that he has the votes. he had a late night meeting trying to rally up enough support so he can gain that house speaker position. the new year brings a new congress and a new speaker of the house with republicans taking chrome of the lower chamber, kevin mccarthy is vying to take over the position even moving his things into the

elected, so we'll find out later if kevin mccarthy has enough votes to secure that position when the house is set to vote later on today at noon eastern time. scott? >> all right, brie. exciting times indeed. thank you. happening today, disgraced bay area crypto exchange founder sam bankman-fried is expected to enter a plea in his federal criminal case. prosecutors say he misused $8 billion deposited into ftx. the now collapsed cryptocurrency exchange. he's facing charges including securities fraud and money laundering. bankman-fried is confined at his parents' home in palo alto after he was released on a record-setting $250 million bond. moving you forward this morning with the holidays now behind us, there are now growing concerns about a possible covid surge and covid isn't the only thing going around. for the past several weeks hospitals have seen a flood of patients with the flu and rsv which has led to a scarce supply
5:07 am
in over-the-counter medicine especially for younger children. joining us is inspected shus disease expert dr. peter chin-hong. covid cases were mildly trending down. but now with christmas and new year's behind us, do you think we could see a surge coming again? >> it's not really going to be a surge in the typical way we think about it but the cases are definitely going up. i'm comforted to see deaths are relatively stable and relatively low and not a ton of hospitalizations and definitely nothing like we've seen in the last two years. >> wonderful. good news. a nice trend to start out our new year. i also understand of concerning news is a new covid variant, the xbb 1.5. a subvariant of omicron. what can you tell us about that? >> yes, xbb, at a time variants are around, it so happens two variants can come together and
5:08 am
make a child and that's what's happening with xbb. it's actually a child of two ba.2 variants, so it's come back and is increasing to be the most common variant that we're seeing now and responsible for the fact that whatever is going around is so easy to get right now. >> i understand there are growing concerns over strep throat cases that are hitting a lot of children right now and also growing concerns over amoxicillin shortage. what can you tell us about that? >> well, strep is definitely increasing. we've seen that first happen in europe, and it's not just really the strep that causes strep throat but a more serious invasive strep that can get inside the body and cause people to get sicker. fortunately it's still not very common but more than we expected. we're definitely on the lookout. strep is a bacteria, group a strep, but it acts like a respiratory virus in terms of it being spread by droplets.
5:09 am
so you get a big bang for your buck in a crowded area indoors when you're wearing a mask because you not only protect against covid, influenza and rsv but against strep. the amoxicillin shortage is driven by a lot of folks giving antibiotics for colds and rsv earlier on, and that's what's driving the shortage because in the beginning a lot of people can't tell the difference between bacteria and viruss. >> dr. peter and i covered so much more during our interview including the spread of the flu. he's posted it in its entirety online. head to nbcbayarea.com or you can also stream it on roku and apple tv. well, let's talk about reservoirs this morning. yes, this is very dark but this is lexington reservoir where the recent rains brought water levels up. 57% of capacity. 628 feet.
5:10 am
we have video from yesterday. meteorologist kari hall and i taking a look at this. and the next storm system, this could be a strong one and hopefully we'll fill these up. >> of course we always watch out for the potential flooding in nearby areas. we've seen levels come up significantly. 91% of capacity and the uvas reservoir which did overtop its banks is now still at 100% of capacity. for a lot of our north bay fills up and we will be closely watching those creeks, rivers and streams as we look at the russian river at guerneville a few feet below flood stage as well as the napa river, coyote acreek at 2 feet below flood stage and the guadalupe rifrp at almaden expressway. after all of this rain we've
5:11 am
measured with kentfield getting over 10 inches of rain, 12 to 13 inches of rainfall in some of our hills. a lot of spots measuring at least a couple inches of rain as much as once again 12 or 13. we'll see more coming our way and more problems. i'll talk about the impacts coming up. of course you want to know where the lowest gas prices are. it's important to keep the gas tank full. it might require you to have to make fast moves. we try to check around where you can fill up for less around the bay area with alpha gas buddy. in concord $3.29 a gallon. the best we're seeing in coupler tino is at 76 on stevens creek boulevard where it is $3.69. at marin gas and magnolia avenue that's $3.75 a gallon there.
5:12 am
so a couple of prices less than $4 is always a good idea. traffic wise, though, dublin we could see wet roads out there. aside from that, though, there are a couple things to consider as you head out the door. talking about impacts from new year's eve along southbound 35 a mudslide happened. we're seeing slowing along highway 85. 19 minutes. northbound 85 from highway 101, san jose. northbound 280 from highway 101 to highway 85, seven minutes. back to you. >> thanks, vianey. it is 5:12 right now. fixing some of your apple products will cost you a bit more. up next on "today in the bay," the big price change the tech giant is making for those looking to fix or replace their products. the full list of impacted items ahead. plus, tesla production reaches record numbers as demand falls short. we explain why that's a rarity

westbound 80 to the bay bridge about seven minutes. no impacts right now along any of those stretches but westbound 82 to the san mateo bridge 11 minutes. a full traffic report coming up. first, let's check in with pippa. >> reporter: good morning. well, wall street is set to open higher on this first trading day of 2023. stocks slipping on friday to close out a bruising year for the markets. the worst since 2008. the dow falling roughly 9% last year. the s&p 500, be 19%. the nasdaq 33%. inflation and aggressive interest rate hikes by the federal reserve hit growth and tech stocks. worries about a recession are also keeping markets on edge. in focus this week data on the manufacturing and services sectors, job openings and minutes from last month's fed meeting, and the monthly jobs report, which comes out on friday. apple is raising the price to replace batteries in most iphones and macs.
5:17 am
they will go up by $20 to $69. macbook up to $30 to $159. the macbook pro will cost $59. battery replacement can be done at apple stores, online using mail-in service or at an authorized reseller. tesla produced and delivered a record number of vehicles in the fourth quarter but still missed wall street's forecast. the company continues to face sly chain issues. weaker demand in china and stiff competition from the likes of ford, gm and startups. scott and laura, back to you. >> pippa, thanks. 5:17 right now. the gang's all here and we're talking about the weather because certainly it impacts the morning commute and we have a dry day, though, today.
5:18 am
today is the day to try to get prepared for this next storm coming in, and we've been talking a lot about it. here is what you can expect as we go into the day tomorrow. we are starting out with a dry day and that break before a stronger storm arrives tomorrow. when we look at the impact of the scale of this atmospheric river, what we had over the weekend out of a five it was a four. what we're expecting tomorrow is a three, but we've had a significant storm recently and so now we have flood watches going up as we are anticipating flooding going on around the bay area including some swift moving creeks and rivers. if you've been in an area prone to flooding, you can expect we'll have a lot more problems over the next few days. in the sierra we'll see more snow coming down that may close roadways. over the next seven days we have three more storms coming our way. and as we mentioned it is dry
5:19 am
today but still a couple of spotty sprinkles. the cars in front of you are kicking up some water from the wet roadways. and then as we go into tomorrow morning all of the bay area will be included in this flood watch with the saturated ground and more excessive rainfall within the next 24 hours and also street flooding will be an issue especially as those leaves have been clogging the storm drains. this is another atmospheric river that has a connection to hawaii which enhances that amount of moisture as it moves across the pacific, and we'll get another boost of heavy rainfall coming in. the time line for it starts at 3:00 tomorrow morning as it moves into the coastline as we go throughout the rest of the morning we see heavier waves of rain coming in but mostly a steady rain tomorrow. here we are and it is lit up with a lot of yellows and oranges indicating some heavier rainfall coming through and then
5:20 am
going into early thursday morning scattered showers that will taper off. we talk about the three storms in seven days. the first one comes through, the next one arrives on saturday and continues into sunday which also looks significant. then right after that we have another storm coming in on monday into tuesday that will bring in additional heavy rainfall. i don't see any letup and even with the rain tomorrow into thursday it could bring us from 2 to 3, even more for parts of the coastline and some of the hills. in total we could see another 4 to up to 11 or 12 inches. this will be a big impact for the sierra. looking from 30 to 79 inches of
5:21 am
snowfall and in some spots double the normal amount of snow. very active weather here. make sure you are prepared with the nbc bay area if you are expecting flooding to get the sandbags ready. the potential of power outages as well as this very busy and strong storm comes in to the bay area. vianey, any updates on the roadways? these are the times we tell folks if you don't have to go anywhere, don't go anywhere. tomorrow into thursday that impact is going to get even worse. in dublin a little bit of the wet pavement. that is what we're seeing as well out on the roads. we have a couple of impacts from the new year's eve storms that came through that includes along state route 9 closed in both

streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. well, good morning, everyone. happy tuesday to you. i'm scott mcgrew. marcus is going to take the week off. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's start with the forecast. everybody is talking about the incoming storm that's headed our way. a dry one at least today, kari. today is our day to prepare. we have a little bit of a break but we do have another big storm coming in tomorrow. we're going to be tracking it all with our storm ranger or mobile doppler radar. it is showing we are getting a couple of spotty sprinkles as you get ready to head off for work. we're already getting ready for the next storm with a flood watch that's been posted for the entire bay area, and it starts tomorrow morning, continues through thursday. we know the ground is already saturated and with additional rainfall we're expecting a quick rise in creeks, streams and rivers and they could be running high and fast with the potential flooding that's going to be coming in but also street flooding where drains are clogged up and just can't keep up with the heavy rain.
5:31 am
as we widen out the view, we wanted to show you that storm that will be moving our way, another atmospheric river with that deep, tropical moisture that will give us more rainfall as it arrives early tomorrow morning continuing through thursday. we'll talk more about how much rain you can expect and what's ahead in the forecast coming up in just a few minutes. laura? >> thank you very much, kari. 5:31. developing overnight a sinkhole on the peninsula swallowing a parked suv. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in daly city this morning. bob, we make the assumption it's weather but maybe not. >> reporter: not clear yet. i did speak with the water department and they said it is possible because of the rains this weekend that it eroded the soil underneath the water main that was right there and it cause that had pipe to break, but he said they won't know until they get down in there. yes, it was a broken water main. we're at castle street and abbott avenue t. eroded

underneath the street corner and you see that 2001 toyota sequoia sunk in. the pipe burst around 1:00 a.m. you can see the water rushing out from underneath that suv. then about an hour later the ground gave in and that suv nosed down and sunk. a tow truck company already came by and said they can't pull it out. daly city police are out trying to figure out who to call next. they were able to wake up the owner of the suv. >> trying to get me to come out to look at my car and by the time i come out, what? my car is in the sinkhole. >> reporter: the owner tells us he still needs to figure out how he will get in to work as that was his only set of wheels. the daly city public works department is out here. they're not clear on what caused that pipe to burst, if it was caused by the weekend's storm or
5:33 am
something else. another storm is on the way. the national weather service is warning the system arriving tomorrow will, quote, likely be one of the most impactful systems on a widespread scale this meteorologist has seen in a long while. that's a quote from the national weather service predicting widespread flooding, collapsed hillsides, downed trees, power outages and possible loss of human life. places like san francisco are gearing up again at moto house, a motorcycle storage facility on 14th street, they're putting in a wall. you could call it a levee according to our own terry mcsweeney, so the flooding that happened there saturday doesn't happen again later tomorrow when another big storm rolls into town. they won't be reopening after about $100,000 in damage from saturday's storm. the owner was ready with his own dam but it wasn't enough. and in the city's public utilities commission they didn't set up storm barriers out there this past weekend because the forecast was for a moderate
5:34 am
storm, not the near record rain that fell. we all saw that. those storm barriers will be going up later today. the in-person emergency operation center will be activated again and crews will be tending to trees and clearing out drains for the next 24 to 36 hours. you can see this suv a 2001 toyota sequoia nose down into the corner at abbott and castle street. the water department tapping the ground i think trying to figure out where else this broken water line might have eroded underneath the pavement. reporting live in daly city, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> i know you will stay on top of it, thank you. 5:34. along the peninsula there is heightened concern this morning about creek levels in east palo alto. that area saw significant flooding which has led to the closure of one lane on wood land avenue. the road itself runs alongside

that long-standing monthly ritual measuring the sierra snowpack. >> meteorologist kari hall is here and, yes, they do it with the big tube, right, but there are robotic sensors. >> it measures the moisture content and all of that stuff, not just the depth of the snow. so it does give you more information on what they're measuring there in the sierra, and we know it's been a lot. let's take a look at this video that we have, another picture from palisades at the resort where the trees are just weighed down by all of that heavy snow and the sierra snowpack from what we call our manual sensors are the automatic sensors about 175% of the normal amount of snowfall statewide in the southern sierra is at more than double the amount of snow for this date and there's more on the way. we talk about the potential of another 3 to 4, even 5 or 6 feet of snow over the next week as we go toward this big storm system.
5:40 am
three or four storms are headed our way. for the bay area we have a break today. the next big storm arrives tomorrow starting early in the morning. bay area flood watch has been posted, and we're expecting the potential of swift moving creeks and rivers and that sierra snow that may close those roadways. we have three storms coming in over the next seven days. the one coming in tomorrow is going to be a strong one. we'll talk about the impacts we're expecting in the forecast coming up in just a few minutes. vianey, you've been looking at road closures and still the lingering impacts from the storms over the weekend. everything from flooding to mud slides. right now a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. still no metering lights on. a pretty smooth commute through there. let's get to some of the issues that you could still be encountering the latest following the impacts of the rain southbound 280 to monterey boulevard. there is flooding happening along that stretch so could see delays, reroute yourself off on the surface streets, a better
