part of the area was actually closed but is now back open for the morning commute. meantime a nearby mudslide causing dangerous conditions for drivers. this one happened nearby on summit road. >> peoplho contra costa county's flood zones doing all they can to fill sandbags ahead of tomorrow's incoming storm, even more rain forecast beyond that. >> i didn't realize it was going to be a problem or i would have done this the other day. >> we weren't as prepared last time. >> san ramon creek blew over its banks some time over the weekend and roads were turned into rivers. we saw road crews working into the night still cleaning up from mud slides on new year's eve. meteorologist kari hall here is timing out this forecast. when does this hit? we will see the next storm coming in early tomorrow morning. we do have a break today and it's time to make sure you're clearing those storm drains as they may have become clogged during the last storm.

also checking your tire pressure and your windshield wipers but, yeah, get those sandbags. if you flooded previously or are in a low-lying area, you want to make sure you are prepared for that. charging up devices as we may have power outages starting tomorrow with the heavy rain continuing and make sure you are also signed up for emergency alerts or you have the nbc bay area app so that you can get alerts and also those updates as this storm system evolves. we are seeing a dry start to our morning and now we have a flood watch that has been issued for the bay area coming on an already saturated ground this next storm as it arrives may cause a quick rise in those creeks, streams and rivers. it could be running high and fast as well as street flooding that will be a very likely scenario over the next few days. and we're going to have more on that coming up. vianey, you've been watching the morning commute. it looks like it's backing up there. it is getting really busy. you can see the taillights, headlights right there.

"today in the bay's" brie jackson in d.c. brie, california and kevin mccarthy of bakersfield hopes to be speaker, but it looks like it might not be possible. >> reporter: it's one of those situations more power, more problems for kevin mccarthy. he did have a late-night meeting last night with house republicans. he's trying to rally up enough votes to secure the position of house speaker. the new year brings a new congress and a new speaker of the house with republicans taking control of the lower chamber, kevin mccarthy is vying to take over the position, even moving his things into the speaker's office. >> do you have the votes for speaker tomorrow? [ inaudible ] >> reporter: typically 218 votes are needed to become the speaker. >> nothing he's done to earn my vote. he's part of the swamp cartel. >> i hope we can come together and focus on what we have to do. >> reporter: today could mark the first time in 100 years the party leader doesn't win on the

criminal case. prosecutors say he misused $8 billion deposited into ftx, the now collapsed cryptocurrency exchange. he's facing charges including securities fraud and money laundering. bankman-fried now confined at his parents' house in palo alto after he was released on a record-setting $250 million bond. moving you forward this morning with the holidays now behind us there are now growing concerns about a possible covid surge and covid isn't the only thing going around for the past several weeks hospitals have seen a flood of patients with the flu and rsv which led to a scarce supply of medications. joining us is infectious disease expert dr. peter chin-hong. since weep last talked to you covid cases were mildly trending down but now with christmas and new year's behind us, do you think we could see a surge coming again? >> it's not going to be a surge in the typical way that we think about it, but the cases are

definitely going up. i'm comforted to see deaths are relatively stable and relatively low and not a ton of hospitalizations and definitely nothing like we've seen in the last two years. >> wonderful, okay. good news. a nice trend to start out our new year. i also understand of concerning news is of the new covid variant, the xbb 1.5. it's a subvariant. what can you tell us about that? >> xbb means at a time a lot of variants are sticking around it so happens that two variants could come together and make a child, and that's what's happening with xbb. it's actually a child of two ba.2 variants so back in the day, but it's increasing to be the most common variant that we're seeing now and whatever is going around is so easy to get right now.

>> i understand there are growing concerns over strep throat case that is are hitting a lot of children right now and also growing concerns over amoxicillin shortage. what can you tell us about that? >> strep is increasing. we saw that happen in europe and it's not just really the strep that causes strep throat but a more serious invasive strep that can cause people to get sicker. fortunately it's still not very common but more than what we expected. we're on the lookout. strep is a bacteria, group a strep, but it acts like a respiratory virus in terms of being spread by droplets. you get a big bang for your buck indoors when you wear a mask because you not only protect against covid, influenza and rsv and also against strep. the amoxicillin shortage is driven by a lot of folks given antibiotics for colds and rsv

early on and that's what's driving the shortage. in the beginning a lot of people can't tell the difference between bacteria and viruses. >> dr. peter and i covered so much more during our interview including the spread of the flu. we posted it online in its entirety. >> you can stream on roku and apple tv. 6:09 on your tuesday morning. this is very dark but this is lexington reservoir. we're monitoring it because the recent rain has brought waters up significantly. last check, 57% capacity or 628 feet. this next round of rain may significantly change that, of course, this is video from yesterday. meteorologist kari hall and i have been talking about it. she takes a look at this next storm system that will help fill the reservoirs. >> the reservoirs are coming up and we have a lot more rain coming our way. we've been watching the levels rise significantly over the past month and now we're at 71% of

capacity at the coyote reservoir. east bay mud at 91% and the uvas reservoir overtopped its banks over the weekend and it's still at 100% of capacity in the north bay on average. we're at about 71% of capacity. we are also watching those creeks, rivers and streams that are most likely going to rise very quickly over the next few days. if you do live nearby one like the russian river in guerneville, already at 28 feet, and flood stage is at 32 feet out ahead of the next round of rain. coyote creek at 237 is at 13 feet and flood stage is at 15 feet. the guadalupe river is at just 3 feet below flood stage right now and the napa river also very close. we've just had so much rain over the past few days. looking at the seven-day rainfall totals, anywhere from an inch to five inch in the south bay, up to 10 in kentfield and our hills and mountain have is had 12 inches of rain over

the past week. and once again the next atmospheric river that will be coming in tomorrow morning will bring in significant rises on those water ways, and we are expecting the potential of more flooding, and we already have a flash flood watch up even now as we are looking at dry conditions for today. so we'll continue to monitor for that. vianey, how is it looking now for the commute? we did have a couple of impacts to tell you about, but the majority of these are actually still from the weekend storm so take a look, still closed in both directions. we also have some issues as well down through santa cruz so keep that in mind along highway 17, another spot where i noticed some slowing as well, westbound 580 from grant line road to 580, 24 minutes. westbound 84 about ten minutes and a look at up south bay drive times starting to notice a build up along northbound 101 from highway 85, 19 minutes. i'll send it back to you.

the markets. the worst since 2008, the dow down 9% last year. the s&p, 19%. the nasdaq with all that tech down 33% as inflation and aggressive interest rate hikes by the federal reserve hit hard. worries about a recession also keeping the markets on edge. apple telling several suppliers to make fewer parts for some of its products due to weak demand. air pods, apple watch, macbooks, japan's nikkei reporting one manufacturing said the supply chain in china still trying to adapt to the government scrapping that zero covid policy last month that led to a shortage of workers because of the surge in cases. new this morning if you're ordering coffee at starbucks today you'll likely see a new option to tip your barista, but it's causing some controversy. customers using plastic are now given a prompt, but that's not the issue. some say the process is incredibly awkward at the drive-through window because the

2020. the flowers are going to get a drink today, my goodness. >> we've had a lot of rain and we know that the hills have turned green. we have mud slides now as a result in some of those hills as well and watching out for more than the potential of more big impacts as this next storm comes in. take a look live in san jose. a bit of a break today. it feels milder out there as you're stepping out the door and we stay in the 50s for the most part going into late morning into the afternoon. the sun just kind of peeks out as we are once again widening out the view, taking a look at what's ahead with all of the clouds reaching in. some of those light showers just off the coast. here is the center of the storm way back here, that area of low pressure, all of the clouds moving out ahead as the atmospheric river, that connection to hawaii, and that narrow band of all of that

moisture that's going to flow over the bay area and enhance the rainfall. so we're looking at the impact of this, and i know this is a lot to look at, but we're really focusing on the bay area right here. we have an impact scale of 1 to 5. we're right now at a 3. the yellow dots indicate an atmospheric river that is a 3 on the intensity and over the weekend we had a 4. this is another big impact storm that's going to be moving in coming on an already saturated ground. we start to see the rain coming in tomorrow morning at 3:00 along the coastline and pushing quickly across much of the rest of the bay area throughout the morning. we see a lot of green here which indicates some light-to-moderate rainfall but then it looks like it picks up in intensity with some yellows and oranges going into tomorrow afternoon into the evening. this is where we are expecting the brunt of the storm with gusty winds and heavy rainfall

coming down fast and hard that could cause that flooding that we're expecting to continue into thursday. we still see the waves of rain on thursday. finally it's starting to taper off on thursday evening before we catch a break. and we do have three storms coming our way over the next seven days as this next one sweeps on through, there's only a brief break before the next storm comes in saturday into sunday. and then it doesn't look like there's much of a break after that with monday and tuesday another storm coming in behind that, and it may potentially stay very busy through next week. more storms line up and develop out in the pacific. so this first wave could bring us about 2 to 3 inches of rainfall between tomorrow and thursday and then going into the weekend additional rainfall may in total reach about 9 to 11 inches in parts of the north bay, the santa cruz mountains, and about 3 to 5 inches of rainfall for parts of the east bay into the peninsula.

this is also going to dump heavy snow in the sierra. 32 to 79 inches of snow, power impacts of mud slides, rock slides, street flooding and a quick rise on those creeks and rivers around the bay area. even those emergency alerts and as we go into the weekend another storm coming in on saturday and a their storm following that on monday. we're doing okay but we saw what the weekend storm did to our highways. highway 101 and we'll see the impacts of that through the early morning hours. at least it's moving.

to increase that impact we'll see as we've gone. dealt with all of this heavy rain. right now it's our break, our time to prepare as we are seeing breaks in the clouds, as we start out on this tuesday morning. also, storm ranger is showing that we do still have a couple of spotty sprinkles. for the most part the roads are getting a chance to dry out. we already have a flood watch that's been issued for the entire bay area. it starts tomorrow morning, continues through thursday with more rain falling on an already saturated ground. it will cause the creeks, rivers and streams to rise very quickly and there could be some street flooding as the next storm comes in. i want to widen out the view to show you the atmospheric river that's setting its targets on the bay area and it's going to produce some heavy rain starting this time tomorrow morning and continue throughout much of the day on thursday. i'll have more on that and what we're expecting in terms of rainfall totals and how much snow this is going to produce for the sierra that's coming up in a few minutes.

6:31. developing overnight a sinkhole on the peninsula swallows a parked car. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in daly city. bob, have they said anything? do we know if it's tied to the recent weather or something else? >> reporter: well, that's what the daly city water department will try to find out once they get into the sinkhole. a tow truck crew was able to lift this 2001 toyota sequoia suv out of that sinkhole and get it back on the street. this is the result of a water main that broke here overnight here in daly city. this is video as the water main was still gushing. the pipe burst around 1:00 a.m. you could see the water rushing out from underneath the suv. the suv sunk into the sinkhole. a tow truck company had come by earlier. they said they couldn't pull it out. daly city had to call out a

bigger wrecker with a crane on it to get it out of the ground and police were also able to wake up the owner of the suv and deliver the bad news. >> they were trying to get me to come out to look at my car. by the time i came out, what? my car is in the sinkhole. >> reporter: the owner tells us he's going to need to figure out how to get into work this morning as that was his only set of wheels. daly city's fire department cleaning up the mud and trying to figure out just how much of the ground underneath was eroded by this broken water main. as far as the cause, i did ask a worker, could this be weather related? he said it's possible given the amount of rain we had saturday, it's possible that rainwater eroded the structure underneath the pipe, the earth underneath the pipe, and then the pipe lost support, snapped and burst. and another storm is on the way. the national weather service is warning the system arriving tomorrow will, quote, likely be

one of the most impactful systems on a widespread scale that this meteorologist has seen in a long time. that's something with the nws predicting widespread flooding, collapsed hillsides, downed trees, power outages, and the possible loss of human life. places like san francisco are gearing up again. at moto house, they're putting in a wall so the flooding that happened there saturday doesn't happen again tomorrow when that big storm rolls in. the floodwaters damaged some of the bikes. one restaurant won't be reopening after $100,000 of damage. the city's public utilities commission didn't set up storm barriers this past weekend because the forecast was for a moderate storm not the near record rain that fell. those storm barriers will be going up later today. the in-person emergency operation centers are being activated and crews will be attending to trees and clearing

visit on sunday. this is her father 33-year-old victor flores enriquez. the sheriff's office says he did not return andrea and could be taking her to mexico. they believe the two might be in san diego at the moment. police there are now helping in the search. enriquez was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt and jeans. 6:36. happening today suspected serial killer wesley brownlee will be back in corporate to answer new charges. last week prosecutors in the central valley filed four new charges in a string of murders in stockton in the east bay. among the new victims identified an oakland man shot and killed in april of 2021. shortly after a previously reported deadly shooting there. in all brownlee is now accused in seven deadly shootings. in an eighth case a woman who was shot survived. developing this morning a live look at bengals home stadium in cincinnati where last night's game between the bengals and bills suddenly took a frightening turn.

it's been a long night for fans, some of whom gathered to pray at the hospital for buffalo bills safety damar hamlin. he collapsed to the ground during last night's game. overnight the bills confirmed he suffered cardiac arrest. we get the latest from maggie vespa in cincinnati. >> reporter: laura, good morning. you can see a rainy cincinnati. we're outside the hospital, the trauma center, where the buffalo bills now say damar hamlin is sedated, in critical condition, the result, they say, of a cardiac arrest. that's what they say he suffered on the field, absolutely stunning the nation last night during "monday night football." you saw players on both teams openly weeping and consoling each other, fans in the stands just stunned and largely silent only applauding when hamlin was taken off the field in an ambulance and brought to this hospital. of course the nfl, the league, taking the very rare steps of postponing the game. overnight the outpouring of support online has just been staggering including from tee higgins, the cincinnati bengals

player who we saw collide with hamlin just before hamlin collapsed. higgins tweeting that his thoughts and prayers are with damar hamlin and his family. a lot of conversations this morning about how this really highlights the very real dangers these players face every time they step on the field. laura? >> thank you, maggie. as you can imagine there's a huge show of support for hamlin and his family across social media. players, teams and fans of nearly every sport are sending prayers including the niners, oakland a's, and tee higgins, the bengals' player hamlin had tackled. donations for the toy drive are surging this morning with many showing their support by donating to the charity. our other big story this morning, the weather this is a look at palisades tahoe ski resort already getting some snowfall overnight before the big storm arrives. more than 3 feet of snow fell in some parts of the sierra during the last storm over new year's weekend. later today state water

department teams conduct the season's first snow survey, that long-standing monthly ritual measuring the sierra snowpack. that is something to remember, isn't it, this rain does do good. >> oh, yes, very much so. we could use anything we can get up there. but they also have some modern day sensors there to try to judge the moisture level. >> measures the depth and how that compares to normal and then they go out there and they're measuring the moisture content, a little bit more detail as we look at the sierra snowpack. right now we know we've had a lot of it. the trees are just so weighted down by all of that snow, and we're going to see what they find with that sierra snowpack measurement for today. but we know that with some of the sensors that we have in some spots it's double the normal amount for this date and we do have more on the way. we are looking at the potential of the next three storms bringing anywhere from 30 to 79 inches of snow and maybe even higher for those upper elevations. that storm is going to be moving

into the bay area tomorrow. we are right now starting out with a dry storm ranger as it scans around the bay area and that chance to let the water that we had yesterday soak in. we'll talk about the impacts coming up. vianey has a look at the roads. the roads have been struggling to keep up with all of the rain, and let's take a look at an area that's starting to slow down. the metering lights are on so you can see the cars beginning to slow down. we are seeing a couple of delays through that stretch. now aside from that, no major accidents. niles canyon remains closed. a couple of flood impacts for wednesday and thursday so that extra time will absolutely be necessary. now also notice some slowing. remember the impacts in the tri-valley will continue especially through the sunol stretch, westbound 580 from grant line road, about 26 minutes. i'll send it back to you. >> thanks, vianey. headed to court, the man accused of murdering four idaho college students, set to face a

good tuesday morning. right now at 6:43 as you're heading out the door you can leave the umbrella at home. even though the roads may still be wet on your drive, taking a look outside in observing, we will be cloudy. temperatures in the mid-40s throughout much of the morning and only a few peeks of sunshine. we're preparing for the next big storm set to arrive tomorrow and i'll talk about that time line coming up. and a quick check of your east bay drive times. 680 to vargas road, 11 minutes. no big delays through the east bay. the north bay is doing okay. we have slowing along westbound 37 from sunol, about 21 minutes. a full report coming up. new this morning the attorney defending the suspect in the killing of four idaho college students is speaking out in a new exclusive interview on "today." 28-year-old bryan kohberger is expected to appear in a pennsylvania courthouse today for an extradition hearing.

he may be headed to idaho as soon as tonight. kohberger is a former student at washington state just a few miles from the university of idaho campus. investigators now believe his father drove him to pennsylvania from the northwest for the holidays. they were pulled over twice by law enforcement in indiana. kohberger's attorney believes the authorities have the wrong person in custody. >> he stated this is not him. he believes he's going to be exonerated. that's what he believes. those were his words. he's really been very easy to talk to, actually. >> ahead on the "today" show can you watch the full interview, why the family of one of the murder victims is cautioning against a rush to judgment against the suspect. that's coming up today right after bay "today in the bay." the alarming surge in accidental cannabis poisonings involving young children eating marijuana edibles. southern illinois researchers looked at reports over five

also today if you are in an area that has flooded recently or in the low lying area, you're near a creek or a river, make sure you're getting those sandbags today. i actually posted some of those links on my social media pages at kari hall weather where you can find those locations. charge up those devices. we're looking at the potential of power outages, and you want to make sure you're signed up for emergency alerts either from the nbc bay area app or something where you can get the current and most recent information. we've seen our reservoirs rising quite a bit. right now at 91% of capacity for the east bay and the uvas reservoir that overtopped its banks over the weekend is still at 100% of capacity and a lot of our north bay reservoirs are still running quite high especially when you compare it to the way it was about a month ago. we're also watching those creeks and rivers that are very close to flood stage like the russian river in guerneville that quite

often floods. we're about 4 feet below flood stage now. the napa river still has a lot of room there but we could possibly see that rising quickly. the coyote creek is about 2 feet below flood stage and the guadalupe river at almaden expressway is about 3 feet below flood stage. we are already under a flash flood watch or a flood watch for tomorrow meaning that we could see this rain falling on saturated ground that could cause those creeks, rivers and streams to rise quickly as well as street flooding that will be a possibility. this all coming as the atmospheric river has a connection to hawaii and the tropics that enhances the amount of moisture as the storm system comes in. it's going to produce waves of heavy rain. i know this is a lot to look at. this comes from the center that monitors and scales atmospheric rivers and it has the bay area highlighted in yellow which is a three out of five on the impact scale. and it's going to have a big impact because we recently had a

4 over the weekend. the rain moves in early tomorrow morning at about 3:00 near the coast and spreading across the bay area. when we see the yellows and the oranges it indicates heavier rainfall most likely by tomorrow evening that's also when the winds will be picking up soap that's most likely when we'll see the flooding and also downed trees, rock slides as well as mud slides. it starts to taper off on thursday, and there's only a brief break on friday before another storm system comes in on saturday and then another one behind that on monday into tuesday. and there could be another one behind that. so we're not in the clear just yet. we're looking at about 2 to 3 inches of rain across much of the bay area for tomorrow into thursday and then as we go into the weekend and early next week there may be as much as 11 or 12 inches of rain for the north bay and santa cruz mountains and about 3 to 6 inches of rain for the east bay into the peninsula. a lot to watch out for here.

and welcome back. we're moving you forward with a look at the top stories on "today in the bay" including the wet weather overnight causing new problems on some roadways. >> that included a big issue in the santa cruz mountains. we have new video to show you from a little before midnight showing an apparent rock slide on felton empire road, part of the area was closed overnight but crews have reopened it. a nearby mudslide making conditions dangerous for drivers. this one along nearby summit road. but this isn't the only issue.

>> let's turn to "today in the bay's" bob redell. what are you seeing, bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, be scott and laura. we're in daly city where you can see there's a sinkhole that was caused by a burst water main overnight. the question is whether this water main failed because of the weather, rain and erosion of the past weekend. what was sitting over the sinkhole, at the corner of castle and abbott, was a 2001 toyota sequoia. the ground gave way and that toyota sequoia nosed into that sinkhole and was partially swallowed. we did talk to the owner who was delivered the bad news by daly police. couldn't believe what he was seeing. now he doesn't have a set of wheels, will be trying to figure out how to get into work this morning. they brought out a wrecker with a crane and were able to lift the suv out of here.

charges. last week prosecutors in the central valley filed four new charges in a string of murders in stockton and the east bay. among the new victims identified an oakland man shot and killed in april of 2021 shortly after a previously reported deadly shooting there. in all brownlee accused of seven deadly shootings. the eighth case was a woman who survived. a look at the lexington reservoir where recent rain brought water levels up significantly. last check it was 57% of capacity or 628 feet. and this next round of rain might significantly change that as well because it's coming. >> kari? we're going to see all that have very heavy rain just flowing down into the reservoirs but also our creeks and rivers. if you are near one and even a street that floods frequently, make sure you are paying attention and preparing for that possibility with this next atmospheric river that's going to be coming in. we'll have a lot of updates and
