we have got a lot to get to this morning, and everyone is talking about what happened on "monday night football" last night and worrying about buffalo bills player damar hamlin who is 24 years old and collapsed on the field. this happened during the highly anticipated monday night matchup against the cincinnati bengals. >> the bills are saying that his heart stopped. doctors attempted to revive him. they performed cpr. that was for approximately ten minutes. and then hamlin was rushed to the hospital where he remains in critical condition this morning. >> and there is one powerful image standing out. players forming a human wall around him, giving their friend and teammate as much privacy as they could in that moment. >> we will have complete coverage. we will start with nbc's maggie vespa right outside of the trauma center where hamlin is being treated at this hour. hey, maggie, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. we are in front of the hospital where the buffalo bills say damar hamlin is sedated in

critical condition after they say suffering a cardiac arrest on the field. that incredibly scary ordeal in the middle of monday night football. we saw players on both teams openly weeping and consoling each other. fans stunned. the nfl postponing the game after hamlin was taken off the field in an ambulance. it seemed like a routine play. buffalo bills second year safety damar hamlin tackling tee higgins in the first quarter of monday night's game. >> another bills player is down. >> reporter: after the hard hit, hamlin quickly jumps to his feet but suddenly his body went limp and the 24-year-old collapsed to the ground. the chilling incident shocking players and fans who watched to unfold live on "monday night football." >> and they are intensely working on damar hamlin. >> reporter: an ambulance was rushed onto the field where for at least ten minutes medics administered cpr to the young player. overnight the bills saying hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest

and his heartbeat was restored on the field. players from both teams knelt together in prayer. the gravity of the situation displayed on their faces. some players crying, including bills star quarterback josh allen. >> nobody is concerned about football right now all the way around. america right now is concerned about one thing. the health and safety of this young man. >> reporter: fans at paycor stadium silent during the ordeal. later applauding as hamlin was placed on a stretcher and driven off the field. both teams headed back to the locker rooms and shortly after the nfl postponed the game. the league later releasing a statement that read in part, hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics. he was then rushed to a local hospital where he is in critical condition. >> we got to see a side of football that is extremely ugly. and tonight damar hamlin's dream became a nightmare for not only himself but his family and his entire team.

>> reporter: hamlin seen hugging his mother here in a game earlier this season. the focus of well wishes from players and fans overnight, including tee higgins, who collided with hamlin before he collapsed, writing my prayers and thoughts to damar hamlin and the hamlin family. i'm praying that you pull through, bro. love. many fans also showing support overnight donating to a charity hamlin created to buy toys for children in need. his initial goal, $2,500, has topped more than $3 million. and again what we know overnight is that damar hamlin, according to the buffalo bills, in critical condition and sedated after they say suffering a cardiac arrest. another question secondary, is about the game. the nfl saying right now they are not rescheduling the game and will worry about that down the line saying the focus is on hamlin.

another reminder that every time the players step on the field they risk dangers. hoda? >> maggie vespa for us. thank you. we want to turn to nbc's senior medical correspondent dr. john torres. the bills have confirmed it was cardiac arrest following that hit on the field. what do you make of what may have happened here? >> we don't know exactly what happened and his health condition prior to this. assuming he is a healthy athlete, the one condition a lot of experts are looking at is agitation of the heart and essentially what happens is when the heart gets hit, you get hit over the chest with a certain amount of energy at a very specific time in the heart cycle when the electricity cycle when the electricity is flowing from one side of the heart to the other, top to bottom, then that can trigger this cardiac arrest. this is a rare occurrence. since 1995 around the mid '90s, only 200 cases of this in the united states but it can be a lethal condition like we are seeing happening. getting cpr there, that timing of getting it there is extremely

important. having cpr on hand, having those defibrillators on hand saved his life. >> i mean, we keep talking about what's going to happen with him the next 24 hours is special critical. he is in critical condition. how important is this time right now? >> this time is extremely important. the most important time was right after that hit occurred when he fell. he got aid out there. they came out. the paramedics, staff came out within ten seconds, immediately helping him, starting cpr, which is important. you want to start that within two minutes. they had defibrillators on hand. i'm sure they used those to get him resuscitated. then get him to the hospital. this treatment, what's going on at the hospital to get him back to shape is the important part. we will know in the next 24 hours how he is going to do. our fingers are crossed, prayers that he does well and he gets back to doing what he wants to do, playing football, but more importantly, back to a normal life. >> absolutely. dr. torres, thank you. joining us now is eric wood,

a former player with buffalo. he was actually at the stadium right there calling the game for the bills radio network. eric, good morning. it was really tough to watch on television. i was trying to imagine what it felt like in the stadium. you were there. tell us what you saw. >> it was unbelievable. this stadium went from maybe the loudest, most electric stadium i ever been in, there was so much anticipation for this game, to just complete silence. and guys stay down on with injury. but from the moment that damar hit the turf it was different. this situation was a lot more severe than normal and a lot of that was based on the players' reactions. for an nfl player, we understand there is risk when we step on a football field. to see a man perform cpr for over -- almost ten minutes on one of your teammates had this team, this organization just completely shook. >> i thought the same thing, eric, that really the most astonishing part was the look on the other players' faces. it was written all over their

faces that they were just completely dismayed. as you mentioned, a former player yourself, you are used to seeing tough hits out on the field. what was it do you think about what they saw that so disturbed them? >> this is so rare. it's fairly unprecedented in the nfl. performing cpr is so much different than most of the knee investigations, examinations that they do on the field. we are used to seeing that kind of thing. we are not used to seeing what the bills saw in the reactions from both teams was absolutely disturbing. it brought a different human element to a game that we often see these guys fantasy football players and they are favorite celebrities in a lot of cases, in many of these towns. last night it brought a different human element to it. >> you have played for the team. you covered the team. you know damar. tell us what kind of a guy he is. >> i got to cover him for espn in college when i spoke to his coach in college at the

university of pittsburgh. they had guys that would be drafted higher in the nfl draft but he could not stop talking about how damar hamlin was the best pro in building, absolutely special young man and the bills targeted him in the draft because they wanted a guy like him in the organization. he has been nothing but a first class model citizen from the second he walked into buffalo. and regardless, it's just such a terrible situation. >> yeah. well, eric, thank you so much for joining us. we appreciate your perspective. of course, our thoughts and prayers with the family, with the bills organization, with all the fans there. >> yeah, we are really pulling for him. we will turn now to the dangerous weather wreaking havoc across the country. in the south we are watching an ongoing threat of severe storms after a tornado damaged buildings at a school in arkansas and a post-holiday storm triggered historic flooding in northern california is on the move and threatening millions in the midwest. dylan is keeping a close eye on

the state this week. the ground is completely saturated a recipe for flash flooding. savannah, back to you. >> miguel almaguer, thank you. 7:13. good morning to dylan. you have the latest on what to expect. big story. >> big story as the storm that hit california is moving eastward now a second storm -- or a third, fourth, almost fifth storm at this point will hit california tomorrow right now we are bringing heavy rain and tornado watches and even some tornado warnings in parts of the ohio river valley moving into the south, as well this is round one. round two in later this afternoon. we have a threat across mississippi into central and southern alabama where tornados are possible along with wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. tomorrow that threat will move into georgia and the panhandle of florida we also have significant amounts of water falling from these storm systems. we could see rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour because of that we have flas flood watches and warnings in effect now but also into parts of the southeast we will see the risk as we go into this afternoon with multiple rounds of rain.

pennsylvania he was arrested at his parent's home he is going to be here at this county courthouse later on this afternoon facing first-degree murder charges his attorney says the hearing could be pretty quick, maybe just 15 minutes long he is not fighting extradition. he could be on a plane back to idaho as early as tonight. hours from now bryan kohberger is set to appear in this pennsylvania courthouse, clearing the way for him to return west where his lawyer says he believes he'll be exonerated the victims' families anxious to come face to face with the man accused of murdering their loved ones kaylee goncalves's father steeling himself for the legal battle ahead. >> i want him to be sick of seeing us, sick of knowing that these people won't let it go. >> reporter: as for any possible connection between his daughter and bryan kohberger -- >> i never heard of anybody with that name. was not on my radar at all. >> reporter: the lawyer for the goncalves family adding they are working with investigators to

uncover any ties kohberger's parents say they are fully cooperating with law enforcement. kohberger's father drove cross-country with him in december the father and son pulled over by police twice. >> i just know that they were pulled over in indiana, almost back to back i believe once for speeding and once for following too closely to a car in front of them. >> reporter: details of kohberger's graduate work slowly being revealed he apparently posted a message looking for volunteers for a research project to understand how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making while committing a crime the post uncovered by internet sleuths. desales university where he earned a master's degree in 2022 confirmed the email address on the reddit post belonged to the suspect when he was a student. kohberger went on to pursue his ph.d. in criminology at washington state university. just miles from the off-campus house where those four
