5:01 am
rainfall. and we're still seeing off and on showers. notice where they are. it's on san francisco northward, and we're seeing the spotty showers picking up right now but it's not as much of an impact as what we've seen recently. there will at any point be pop-up showers in the areas, but notice that even as we go into late morning into the afternoon spots like livermore, san jose are going to even see some sunshine while you have much different weather in the north bay from ukiah to santa rosa, to clear lake. we'll see that rain picking up again this evening, and then it spreads into the rest of the bay area with some off-and-on showers through tomorrow morning and then becoming more widespread with the brunt of the storm coming in late saturday evening and continuing into sunday as that heavy rain continues. this is when we're going to have more of the concerns about flooding and also getting ready
5:02 am
for mother atmospheric river right behind that set to arrive on monday. not many breaks here from all of this rain. the impacts from this will continue to add up as we get more and more of these downpours over the weekend and into next week. so we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. vianey has been watching the traffic alert. what's the update there? we do have an update on the earlier crash i mentioned in san francisco along 280. it looks like the latest update we have seen lanes reopened along southbound 280. now this happened earlier due to a traffic crash at 2:15 this morning this is new video just in from the scene. chp says traffic is being diverted off to monterey road. there's still going to be a lot of police activity. though some lanes have since reopened, this could still be showing delays as they work to clear this out. once again we're seeing no impacts on the northbound lanes. the northbound lanes are all completely open, but there still could be stop and go along the
5:03 am
southbound lanes as they completely remove that. now also noticing the crash that just came in, along the 580/205 interchange approaching westbound. i'm noticing delays through there. that stretch pretty common to see delays through there right around this hour. over the rest of san francisco, no impacts to 101. a little bit of slowing in through daly city just after that crash. and mass transit wise, no delays across the board. caltrain is back to its normal service following the delays yesterday after a tree actually fell on the overheadlines and onto the track. that has since been cleared. the bay bridge toll plaza looks good. no metering lights. we're seeing friday light commute. back to you. breaking overnight, just a few feet away from the mission district's police station there was a shooting.
5:04 am
a witness says he saw a car shooting into another car. so far investigators are not confirming those reports. you can certainly see bullet holes in the windows. we've reached out to police for more details. 5:04. turning back to our weather coverage, a live look although it's dark out right now, waiting for the sun's arrival, to assess the damage at capitola village. it was pounded by waves yesterday morning. concern about more trouble with the return of high tide. huge waves, some approaching 40 feet, flooded the historic waterfront area. we have a new look at some of the damage to capitola wharf. huge chunks taken away. one restaurant, zell da's was almost wiped out. more storms line up in the pacific.
5:05 am
>> i feel horrible. they're gone. zelda's is gone. >> i'm devastated. i'm heartbroken. i live up the street and have never seen anything like this. >> the latest high surf advisory did expire just a short time ago. today's high tide is expected some time around 9:00 a.m. concerns are still running high in parts of the bay area with the next storm getting closer. one richmond neighborhood under evacuation orders. monitoring this unstable hillside. families in 15 homes under orders to stay away. meantime, evacuation orders are now in effect for low-lying areas along the russian river from healdsburg to jenner. on the right is an image from yesterday morning, the water may reach 40 feet sunday that will be well above flood levels. this morning many pg&e customers are still without power. this is a look at the outage
5:06 am
map. you can see the yellow and orange symbols meaning thousands are still without power across the bay area. right now 55,000 customers across california are in the dark. with the largest impact in santa cruz county, nearly 10,000 are impacted there. in the bay area, 18,000 are without power. pg&e says the continuing wind and rain is slowing its crews' response time but they're hopeful the short break from the rain will help. you can track the next incoming storms on our nbc bay area app. type in your city and we'll send up-to-the-minute weather alerts straight to your phone. the app is free to download. well, now to a somber memory for this country. the two-year anniversary of the attempted insurrection of the capitol, the january 6th attack. we have a live look at the u.s. capitol where police are ramping up security. there's been talks online there could be protests later today. two years ago former president trump tried to challenge the 2020 election results. a group of trump supporters
5:07 am
marched to the capitol to try to stop congress' certification of president biden. the deadly riot caused the investigation into trump's motive and left the republican party in disarray. and right now the republicans on capitol hill are still divided. day after day kevin mccarthy has failed to secure enough votes to become speaker. each time a small group of holdouts block the bid. today lawmakers will head to the floor for a 12th vote. "today in the bay's" brie jackson joins us live from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott, laura. you know how the old saying goes. if at first you don't succeed, try, try, and try again. well, that seems to be the motto republicans are following. kevin mccarthy hopes the 12th time may be the charm. lawmakers did huddle behind closed doors again last night, and sources tell nbc news that a promising deal is close. >> mccarthy --
5:08 am
>> gaetz, trump. >> reporter: vote after vote. and still no house speaker. kevin mccarthy is the leading republican vote getter failing to reach the magic number of 218 for the 11th time thursday. still, he says he'll try and try again. >> who else gets to 200 votes? >> reporter: roughly 90% of gop members support his bid to become speaker but a small group of rebel republicans say they never will, even voting for former president trump instead. >> i wouldn't be betting on my vote for kevin mccarthy almost under any circumstance. >> at the end of the day kevin will be the speaker. >> reporter: despite making concessions, a rule that a single house member could force a vote to remove the speaker, some hard line holdouts refuse to budge. >> it has become entertainment. it has become sport.
5:09 am
>> reporter: the house can't function amid the infighting as frustrated democrats can only sit by and watch. >> a branch is offline while we wait for this to get resolved. >> this is only an example of what we're likely to see the next couple of years. >> the house stands adjourned. >> reporter: after days of chaos, lawmakers hope to bring this lengthy process to an end. it's now the longest contest for the gavel since before the civil war. and the longest vote for house speaker in history lasted two months and 133 ballots. that happened back in 1855. the house will give it another shot today when they reconvene later this morning. back to you. >> brie, thanks for the very latest there. let's get the very latest when it comes to the sierra. a live look at palisades in tahoe. winter storm warning remains in effect there, but the area is about to get a slight break from the recent storms. during the height of the ak yesterday cal trains called
5:10 am
conditions very difficult to impossible for drivers. it will likely remain that way until at least this afternoon. also checking highway 50 near echo summit, it's currently closed for avalanche control. >> meteorologist kari hall is here. just like the bay area, this pause will be brief. i think today will be a good driving day especially the earlier the better as we get a look at what's happening out there right now as we are seeing the scattered showers moving into the bay area. notice as you get over to the tahoe region there is just some clouds. as they just said, they're stilg cleaning up and doing avalanche control. there may be impacts whether or not the roadways are still open. we are going to see some off and on showers here today but then looking at the sierra snowpack, i mean, it is amazing. we're at 186% of the normal amount around the tahoe area and the southern sierra still double the normal amount of the sierra snowpack. this weekend we are going to see
5:11 am
a wintry mix of rain and snow. as far as snowfall totals we'll see up to 5 to 13 inches and then next week a lot more of the heavy snow but, unfortunately, avalanche danger continues as well as flooding because we are going to at times see this coming down as heavy rain on top of the snow. so there could be a lot of issues there. we're going to start to see the rain returning to the bay area later this afternoon for the north bay. we'll talk more about that hour-by-hour forecast coming up. vianey has a look at where you can find lower gas prices. we all have to get around, and gas is important for that. now we found gas places all under $4. right now the average price of gas in california is $4.44. the top one at the arco. san jose, gas for $3.73. and even in san francisco gas is
5:12 am
$3.79. that's at the national petroleum and cesar chavez street. another thing i want to give you an update on is the latest traffic updates. we did have an earlier sig alert. good news here, though, in san francisco it looks like the latest shows that all lanes have now reopened this is along 280 southbound monterey boulevard. notice to geneva avenue there will be some delays as they work to completely clear that out. northbound lanes and southbound lanes all remain open. your tri-valley times right now moving along good. westbound 580 to 680 looking at 22 minutes. no major delays despite the earlier crash. a live look at the san mateo bridge. it is a little busier than it was during the 4:30 hour, but the bay bridge is moving along nicely as well. no metering lights on just yet. typically they come on at 5:25. for now seems like a friday light commute. back to you. >> let's hope it stays that way. working to get some answers

thank you, pippa. not only will the 49ers have a lot on the line on this sunday's season finale, they'll be facing some soggy conditions. >> playoff seeding may be at stake when they host at levi's. the niners have played in some wet games already this year. most notably week one loss in chicago. but this sunday they may be playing for a first-round bye. if the 49ers beat the cardinals and the eagles lose, they would be the number one seed. a loss may put them back to number three behind minnesota. >> i had forgotten about that chicago game. that was nuts. then again, it's just nuts every day around here. i guess so. we'll be watching the game like that's what we see aushl somewhere else. >> i thought about going but i think i should stay home. >> if you want to sit in the rain. we are already seeing scattered

showers approaching parts of the bay area, the north bay. this is an area we'll be watching over the weekend. as we zoom out we are seeing the storm system approaching and that will continue to move in. of course after a big rain, how are the reservoirs doing? right now across the state the four largest reservoirs in northern california, look at that. they're only at 33% of capacity on average. and we've seen some of them still running very low, but they are very large, and it takes a lot of water for them to start to fill up. here in the bay area reservoirs are smaller. uvas reservoir, one of the smallest, is at capacity right now. we're at 91% of capacity for east bay mud. on average for our north bay reservoirs we're 86% of capacity on average. think about the increase. the uvas reservoir has seen a 54% increase and one of the largest ones has seen 26%
5:20 am
increase, so this has been huge, and we're no longer in a rainfall deficit. in fact, as we've measured anywhere from in san jose nearly 6 inches of rainfall all the way up to 15 inches of rain for oakland, we are now double the normal amount of rainfall for that spot as well as livermore and santa rosa has come out of that rainfall deficit and now is right where we should be for this time of year. we still have a lot more rain ahead, some scattered showers today. we'll start to see it really picking up later this evening from santa rosa on northward. that will be the main impact area as we go into the weekend and then the waves of the heavier rain starts to spread into the rest of the bay area tomorrow morning. but really picking up as we go into saturday afternoon into the evening. you can see all the yellows and oranges there indicating heavy rain. sunday morning is when we will continue to see that rain coming down and then it starts to lighten up, but still targeting the north bay even sunday

evening. and then the next storm comes in on monday with some more widespread rain just this weekend. we're looking at the possibility of anywhere from one to over three inches of rainfall, ukiah could see the most as well as some peaks in the santa cruz mountains. ahead we've been talking about how busy it will be. more atmospheric river coming in on monday and it lingers off the coast with the next storm system on wednesday. hopefully we can continue to see a break there before we get more activity going into next weekend. we're seeing a lot of rain chances here over the next seven days. but the big impacts will be this weekend and then again on monday into tuesday as those next two storm systems come in on an already saturated ground. we are most likely going to see a lot of flooding issues over the next few days. vianey, you've been watching a couple of impacts to the roads this morning. looks a little wet there. this is up through richmond.
5:22 am
notice, though, you'll still see some areas with some of that ponding water. a lot of rain this week. just slow it down out there. i'm still seeing the surface streets. bridges right now no impacts. the san mateo bridge is starting to get very busy. notice all of the taillights and in through the rest of the bay area, remember i mentioned those couple of spots of flooding across some of the local streets, another area we're looking at is san jose. good news here, no major impacts through the south bay. niles canyon, of course, stim still closed through sunol. there are no issues on 84 right now. remember yesterday morning we had that big closure from an earlier crash. south bay northbound 101 from highway 85 about 19 minutes and 280 from highway 101 to highway 85 about seven minutes. tri-valley drive times also looking good. i'll send it back to you. >> looks much better, vianey, thank you. 5:22.
