monica, thank you. we do want to turn to a story that is really sending shockwaves across the country. a 6-year-old student in custody this morning for shooting his elementary school teacher. you heard that right. 6 years old. the teacher is in critical condition. nbc's erin mclaughlin has more. >> reporter: kristen, good morning. it is every parents' worst nightmare. gunfire in the classroom. it happened in virginia where the student opened fire incur -- injuring their teacher. this was not an accident. this morning in virginia. >> lockdown. >> reporter: a community terrified following america's latest school shooting. parents asking that haunting question is my child safe. >> my heart stopped. i was freaking out. >> reporter: this time the gunman wasn't a man at all. a 6-year-old boy who allegedly

shot and wounded a teacher on friday afternoon. >> this was not an accidental shooting. >> reporter: according to police, the unidentified child, armed with a handgun, fired a single shot in the first grade classroom at richneck elementary sending the school of 550 students into lockdown in the city of newport news, virginia. >> this is not a situation with a student going up or any other individuals going up and down the halls actively firing in a shooting incident. >> reporter: authorities say the teacher, a female in her 30s, has life threatening wounds and is improving. the 6-year-old shooter was arrested. >> we got a lesson in gun violence and what guns can do to disrupt education. >> reporter: parents picked up children in the gym. >> i lit up. my baby. he's okay. crazy world we live in.

alzheimer's patients despite risks. >> it was very clear evidence that knocking down ameloid aggressively can slow cognitive decline if starting early enough. >> reporter: at trial found cognitive decline 27% slower in people given it over an 18-month period. john enrolled in the trial after the lawyer and father of two was diagnosed at 57. >> i didn't know how long i had before john would forget my name or face or remember the kids. >> reporter: they still don't know if he was initially given the drug or placebo, his cognitive decline stopped. since september, john has been getting the medicine in twice monthly infusions. >> if you hear you will get a few moments and plan a year out at some point, that's everything. >> reporter: the drug is not without risk. some 13% of patients developed

good morning, thanks for joining us on this saturday, january 7th. i'm kira klapper. yesterday, we had a small break in the weather before the next round of rain comes today, and with the clearing, it was a chance for city crews and residents to prepare for potential problems before the brunt of the storm hits later on tonight. one san francisco woman we spoke with lives near twin peaks park and tells us a mud slide from the park near her home has gotten worse the past few days. she's reported it to the city but hasn't heard anything back. with more storms approaching, she's worried the mud will flow towards her home. >> my daughter's bedroom is
