tv Today in the Bay NBC January 8, 2023 7:00am-8:01am PST
7:00 am
good morning. it is sunday, january 8th, 7:00 and i am kira klapper. thank you so much for joining us on this first sunday of 2023. we are under a microclimate weather alert, and we have live team coverage. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is monitoring some of the damage caused by the store but first let's check in with cynthia who is tracking the new storm's path. cynthia, i did see a little bit of drizzle coming in this morning. >> yeah, a little bit right now in the morning hours but really the bulk of that activity as we were forecasting was overnight yesterday, saturday, and it's still lingering on today.
7:01 am
so some of those effects are still being felt. you can see them right here on satellite and radar. we have thunderstorm activity in the north bay. it's pushed through just north of bodega bay, sonoma county and in the last couple of minutes it's pushed into areas such as davis moving on into sacramento. the winds were also very, very wild last night, gusting anywhere from 30 to 50 miles an hour up in the mountain tops, but now we have calmer conditions from the south and that's how the rest of the day will go today as we subside from this storm. as we take it on out into stormranger, i wanted to show you that activity i was talking about. those thunderstorms have just pushed into sacramento. otherwise the rest of the bay area starting to get a little bit more calmer conditions. there are a couple of cells that i'm watching right now just around sausalito, a few pockets of light rain have just pushed over richmond and berkeley as well. i've noticed that one of them has stalled a little over the santa cruz mountains as it tries to push into morgan hill and gilroy, but how much rain did we
7:02 am
get over the last 24 hours? a very active first weekend of 2023. if you look at the map here, of course a lot of rain piling up in the north bay as it was a lot of rain that moved through the morning hours, continuing on yesterday afternoon over the north bay. in the south bay we got a good amount of rain, almost 2.25 inches of rain over scott's valley and then san jose we got rain. it didn't start raining in the south bay until 4:00. what are we going to talk about today? there is a break from all of that rain giving us a chance not only to enjoy the sunshine but of course let the moisture soak into the ground. we'll talk about the heaviest pockets of rain that are returning with tomorrow's storm. i'll walk you through hour by hour but for now let's continue with damian trujillo who has a look at the damage this storm has caused overnight. damian. >> reporter: right now there's a slight respite, as you mentioned, cynthia. i'm looking up at the sky and clear skies in the south bay
7:03 am
right now. i'm at the sandbag station in south san jose and it's been busy here. people have been stopping by to pick up some of these and make sure their homes or streets are protected some of the localized flooding. crews will work to fill them up again and they're bringing in a shipment from lodi because there's going to be a big demand here. let's take you across the bay area because there was damage caused by those strong winds. first to healdsburg. on bianca lane, a power pole appeared to have been split in half. radio traffic suggested it was a possible lightning strike. we have not received any official confirmation just yet. and as you can imagine, the area was without power after that strike. another possible lightning strike, the battalion chief on the scene tells us lightning may have struck a transformer so it meant another north bay
7:04 am
neighborhood left without power. luckily there are no reports of any injuries in either of those incidents. just after 3:00 this morning, this time on west side road in forestville, a mudslide. now, this is just west of santa rosa off highway 116. the slide was blocking one lane as crews worked to clear that debris. so power lines down, mudslides, tree branches are down. we'll get into that later on in the show. but right now the sandbag location is going to be replenished by crews who will be working almost around the clock here. san jose remains under a state of emergency because of those storms that are not too far behind. let's send it back to kira klapper back in the studio. >> i want to thank you so much for being out there and letting our viewers what's going on on your day off. we'll see you again soon. >> reporter: thank you. all across the bay area, people lost power overnight. around 1:30 this morning pg&e
7:05 am
crews were working on a downed power line. it was knocked down by large tree branches that caused a large outage in that area. and as you can see, many pg&e customers are still without power. here's a look at the latest outage map. the orange symbols represent thousands without power. there are a lot of those. right now pg&e is reporting more than 207,000 customers in the dark. in the east bay, one man got away with his life after a tree fell on his home in castro valley. it happened on sandy road where the tree covered most of the house. his family was inside the home. while most made it out okay, the man was trapped under the tree. firefighters pulled him out and paramedics rushed him to the hospital. >> my neighbor that lives on the other side of the creek took some pictures. it didn't break, it actually came out of the ground, out by
7:06 am
the roots. >> the tree also took down power lines you can see here, which knocked out power in that neighborhood. according to pg&e's website this morning, the power is still off affecting 60 customers. no word on when crews will get that power back on. in the east bay this new storm already is creating major flooding on roadways, more specifically in emeryville as you see near the 580 off-ramp at powell street. another high-flooded area to try to avoid is the mcdonald avenue and 44th street intersection in richmond. also in richmond, one neighborhood sits under an unstable hillside. here you can see engineers monitoring it. this is along sea view drive and sea cliff way. families in 15 homes down there are still under orders to stay away. these extreme weather patterns, one after another, have left so many families cleaning up and assessing damage inside their homes, including
7:07 am
the bostrum family you just saw. two inches of water got into their danville home last saturday. that was video of them being rescued in the boat. the rain flooded their garage, broke their refrigerator, destroyed their lawn and damaged their shed. >> every time we get rain now, it's a very open question how well cleaned up is the creek. >> reporter: more flooding and isolated power outages are possible with the weather we're seeing into this coming week so they are encouraging all to plan ahead. also top of mind are local creek levels, including one in pleasanton which surged last saturday on new year's eve and is forecast to rise once again. meanwhile, in san francisco, public works will continue to hand out sandbags to people who live or own a business in the city. this was the scene yesterday at the public works yard at kansas and marin streets. the limit is ten sandbags per
7:08 am
address. public works estimates they have given away 14,000 sandbags altogether. the yard is back open today from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. the sierra is under a winter storm warning. it's in effect until tomorrow morning. this includes the greater lake tahoe area all the way to mono county. the national weather service is advising people to avoid the area or if you must go, prepare for long delays and bring an emergency kit with food, water and clothing. you can always stay up to date with our storm coverage right here on nbc bay area. you can live stream our newscasts on our website at nbcbayarea.com. you can also watch on roku. just select the live tv tile on your home screen, scroll down to channel 133 and there you will find us. if you have a samsung tv, just go to channel 1035. more ways to watch our newscast whenever you want. at 7:08 on your sunday morning, we have much more ahead

7:12 am
is there something that he shared from behind the scenes or, rather, behind the house floor about all that drama we saw play out between january 3rd and 7th? >> well, you know, he did say that he has a fairly cordial relationship with kevin mccarthy and that they are trying to see is there anything they can do in a bipartisan way because, let's be realistic, if you want to pass anything, any sort of big piece of legislation, itbiparti? there's more republicans in the house than democrats, not many more. but he did sound i guess a hopeful note. i'm a little skeptical. i think he sort of said what you should be saying at the beginning, let's give it a shot and see what happens. i think what's more likely to see and what he described, what are the governing republicans going to do? we know there's a chunk of house republicans who don't like this
7:13 am
brinksmanship, who don't like what these hard-liners did. they're not interested in holding the debt limit hostage for a press release, things like that. do they break away? are they comfortable enough -- you know, there's 18 of them that are in districts that president biden won. are those -- that's who i'm looking at. how often are they willing to break away, work with democrats and sort of work around leadership? i guess is it will happen at crucial moments, you know, right at the brink of the debt ceiling or right at the brink of a government shutdown if and when we get there. but i don't expect it on things that they should be doing together but not, like immigration reform. >> that's a hopeful point, bipartisanship when we saw division within one party themselves. i also want to ask you a more regional question for our viewers. california governor gavin newsom was sworn in this friday for his second term as governor, this is
7:14 am
his final term by law. but he chose january 6th the day to take his oath. his talking points at times evoked that of a campaign speech. do you think -- we talked about this before, but do you think this second term will be used to test the possibility of his chances to become president even though he has committed to supporting president biden's second term? >> i think -- look, i think you're asking the question the right way. i think he is going to use -- i think he's certainly going to use this term, if he can, to audition to be a national leader, if you will. joe biden is likely running for re-election and you're not going to have any serious democrats challenge him for the nomination. but the day after the election in 2024, gavin newsom will still be governor for two years and there will automatically be a campaign for the open nomination fight in 2028. so i do. in fact i'll give you -- this
7:15 am
ended up on the cutting room floor because of time, but i was actually going to present gavin newsom's inaugural in contrast with ron desantis' inaugural. the two of them were almost having a debate about what the definition of freedom is. ron desantis had one definition, gavin newsom had another. it's one of those debates i'd like to see the two of them actually have a debate. i don't think we'd ever see it yet. maybe we'll see it sometime this decade. but their inaugural speeches, i'd urge some viewers if they're interested, read the two side by side. it felt like a debate. >> might i suggest "meet the press, the cutting room floor" for your next floor. chuck, as always, good to see you this morning. be sure to join chuck for this morning's "meet the press." as mentioned, he will have representative james comer, incoming chair of the house overnight committee, representative dan bishop and the minority leader, representative hakeem jeffries. stick right here and tune in to
7:16 am
"meet the press" right after this newscast. we want to get back out to our damian trujillo. damian, i believe you are starting to see some wind out there this morning or at least we know we saw it yesterday. rain bringing down trees all over the bay area. tell us a little bit about what you see. >> reporter: well, overnight, i mean the wind kept me up. it was really, really howling. right now it's relatively calm. i mean it's really calm. the skies are clear. it looks like the clouds are being pushed away right now. but there is a run right now, as you can see from the empty pallets here, a run on sand bags. people are running over to the sandbag location to fill up and prevent any localized flooding. they do have some restrictions here. you are limited to 20 sandbags per car just because of that. you mentioned the wind and it was howling overnight and it caused trees to fall all across the bay area. let me take you over to forestville. forestville is just west of santa rosa off highway 116.
7:17 am
the wind toppled one tree here blocking the road. now, there is no word on any reopening of that road. and in mountain view, a scary moment for one driver. this is northbound highway 85. the driver said he was on the off-ramp when a large eucalyptus tree slammed on top of his car. the driver said he was shaken up, but otherwise okay. now, rescue crews managed to pull the car out of that mess and hand it over back to the driver. then they went on to remove the tree from the middle of the off-ramp. the driver said he can'n't belie howw close of a calll thihis war hihim. > the treree just fell off r away on the car and therere waso way i w was ablee to get awaway ththat. asas you can see the result. >> where were you traveling to? >> i was going home. >> reporter: again, back at this sandbag location in san jose, one of the workers here says
7:18 am
they're going to be filling them up later on this morning. they're bringing another truckload in from lodi because they're running low and are working as fast as they can to make sure the residents can get as many sandbags as they can, limited to 20 at this location here. right now the skies are clear, the wind is calm, unlike overnight, but that might change shortly. let's sending it back to cinthia to see what the future has. >> i also live in the south bay. it was the wind that was causing a concern for me because there are a lot of redwood trees around my neighborhood. satellite and radar, we are seeing those lingering effects from last night's storm. we saw some thunderstorm activity around bodega bay. in the last couple of minutes to an hour it has pushed into the sacramento valley with gusty winds, pea-sized hail. it looks as the sun is starting to come out, conditions are starting to look a little better. here is the parade of storms coming into the bay area for the second week of january.
7:19 am
this rain is not letting up and we are in store for a very heavy storm for monday morning's commute. before we get to that, we still remain under a flood watch through tuesday because of all of that rain. that hasn't had a lot of time to soak into the ground. creeks and rivers definitely a concern the next couple of days and the high impact continues to be tomorrow morning's commute into the evening hours and on into tuesday. so we've been talking about a lot of different rivers and creeks around the bay area. one of them that has caught our attention is the guadalupe river. you can notice that the flood stage is 8.5 feet. we've seen it rise and go down as the week goes on. by the time we get to monday morning -- monday afternoon, excuse me, we can see that river rise up into 9.9 feet. so it's just in that minor flooding stage. another one that we are keeping an eye on is the ever so popular russian river at guerneville.
7:20 am
look at that trend line. flood stage 32 feet, but as we go into this week's storm, it is forecasted to rise just into that minor flooding stage at 32 feet. but again, these forecasts can change depending on how this storm system moves on through. but for today, a chance to get outside, enjoy the 49ers game. i know they're playing at home. and of course give ourself some time to prepare for next week's storms. temperatures around the bay area in the mid to upper 60s -- mid to upper 50s with some 60s sprinkled on there. now, speaking of sprinkles and the next 24 hours, let's walk you through hour by hour so you can plan your evening tonight. rain starts to come in late evening tonight starting in the north bay, becoming more widespread in the early morning hours. so while a lot of us are sleeping, we'll hear the winds howling and see the rain. monday morning's commute, look at that time stamp, 7:00 a.m. we are covered in heavy rain as we try to get to work, to school, so just plan on that and
7:21 am
give yourself extra time. be careful on the roads out there. continuing like this as we go through the middle of the day on monday. monday evening's commute looks to be a little bit better before we get some more rain pushing on through here on tuesday. how much rain are we talking about? anywhere from 2 to 3 inches locally, but look at the dark purple around the north bay hills and santa cruz mountains. that little pocket of white there, we could see 6 plus inches of rain as this storm moves on through. so we are seeing a very active seven-day forecast ahead for us here. i'm really concerned about the -- not only the rivers and creeks but of course power lines coming down again and any of those localized flooding issues. so not the time to let our guard down, even though today will be a nice day. so planning ahead. >> and thank goodness for this break. >> yeah. >> so our ground can absorb -- >> and as human beings we also need the sun to get us in that
7:22 am
7:24 am
good morning, everyone. i'm anthony flores. the warriors and dub nation getting a little scare last night. klay thompson was scratched before the game against the magic with soreness in his left knee. andre iguodala making his season debut. he hasn't played since the nba finals. he didn't score but he did grab a pair of boards and had an assist in 12 minutes of work. andrew wiggins also returned after missing 15 games. but the story, anthony lamb. he scored a game-high 26 off the bench. but orlando had the magic touch.
7:25 am
they beat the warriors 115-101. hey, coach kerr, what's going on with klay thompson. >> it got sore during warmups and the training staff looked at him and for precautionary reasons kept him out of the game. >> not a long-term concern? >> no. the training staff said we're going to keep him out because it's bothering him, precautionary. the 49ers are getting another offensive weapon back today for their regular season finale. elijah mitchell. the 49ers running back has been activated off injured reserve. he'll be playing in just his fifth game of the season today against arizona. both deebo samuel and christian mccaffrey are also expected to be back in action. samuel has missed the last three games with knee and ankle injuries, cmc also has an issue with his ankle. the red-hot niners have won nine in a row. if the eagles lose and the niners win, san francisco could grab the top spot in the nfc. >> would love to be the one seed
7:26 am
but right now we've got the two seed and we want to stay the two seed. in order to do that we need to win. to me there's only one thing guys should be worried about and our guys should be talking about and that's beating arizona. a challenging season comes to a disa pointing end for the silver and black. the raiders closing out the regular season against the kansas city chiefs. it was all kc in this. what are they doing? is that ring around the rosie? yeah, patrick mahomes dumps it to kadarius toney and he takes it in for the score but a flag and no touchdown. kc wins it 31-13. the silver and black end their season at 6-11. back at full strength and the sharks with momentum here. the shot goes in! mario ferraro ties the game! >> the score was knotted at deuce in the second and the bruins show the sharks why they're the best team in hockey. boston scores one more goal in
7:27 am
the second, adds another goal in the third and the bruins skate by san jose, final 4-2. that's a look at your morning sports. i'm anthony flores for "today in the bay." it is 7:27. coming up on "today in the bay" our live team coverage of today's storm continues. and with our storm coverage, we're going to be taking a look at the storms ahead for the second week of january. our areas are concern around the north bay, santa cruz mountains, and where the storm for the middle of the week is projected to go. and of course how next weekend looks. keep it here, you're watching "today in the bay." i'm damian trujillo live in the south bay where there's a break in the rain but people are waking up to power outages. that's coming up
7:30 am
a little bit of damp tarmac out there. clouds in the background. might be worth mentioning six cancels, 34 delays currently at sfo. thank you so much for starting your sunday morning with us, i'm kira klapper. we are under a microclimate weather alert and we have live team coverage as a new storm is expected to move in as our sunday evening moves in. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is out there monitoring the damage caused thus far but first we'll check in with cinthia pimentel who is tracking the storm's path. >> good morning, everyone. yeah, that damage caused thus far is the trees that came down overnight, the howling winds that we all heard, and then this as the morning hours pushed on through the bay area, we saw a couple of thunderstorm activity going on as it moved through the north bay. let's take it over the last three hours to see where that was. we can see over bodega bay, sonoma county, and it's pushed
7:31 am
on through over the last half hour to an hour into areas such as davis, vacaville and is now moving on into sacramento so there are some gusty winds in that area, but the hail is only pea-sized out there so conditions are starting to get better as we are waking up this morning. the day will be nice. so enjoy sunday fun day because this is the only break in the rain that we're going to see before tomorrow's storm. let's take it out really quickly t storm ranger scanning the skies. there are a few light clouds moving through. around san jose, light showers. another cell pushing through morgan hill and gilroy. how much rain did we get? a lot was focused around the santa cruz mountains, over 2 inches there. san jose saw only a little over a quarter of an inch of rain. really our concern yesterday and as we go into this next week's storm is the north bay where they got 1 to 2 inches of rain there and more is expected as we
7:32 am
head into monday's storm. we're also going to talk about lake tahoe because as pretty as it looks, we are under a winter storm warning over the next couple of days. so travel there definitely not recommended. although all of this snowpack is helping our reservoir levels. we will walk you through all of that and of course the extended outlook. for now, i'll send it back to you, kira. well, lightning strikes have happened overnight and into this morning. if you can look closely right there, our cameras captured a lightning strike above san francisco last night from the golden gate bridge. it looks like into marin. those lightning strikes have caused some damage in the north bay already. we're going to turn to "today in the bay's" damian trujillo who's tracking all of what's going on outside. damian, what have you seen so far this morning or overnight, i could clarify? >> reporter: yeah, kira, just looking at the feeds coming into the station from across the bay area, you can see all the damage caused. we had a little bit of
7:33 am
everything, wind, rain, and as you mentioned, lightning. i'm here at the sandbag location here in south san jose where they're going to replenish it later on because it's running low. people are coming out here and picking up their sandbags to prevent some localized flooding around their homes and their streets. but you mentioned that lightning, and it was all over the north bay. we'll take you first over to healdsburg. it was windy all across the bay area overnight and on bianca lane in healdsburg, a power pole appeared to be split in half. radio traffic suggested it was a possible lightning strike. we have not received official confirmation on that yet from the leaders there in that area. but as you can imagine, the area was without power after that alleged strike. also another possible lightning strike. the battalion chief on the scene tells us that lightning may have struck a transformer, so it meant another northbound neighborhood left without power like many others across the bay area. luckily there are no reports are
7:34 am
any injuries in either of these incidents. and then just after 3:00 this morning, this time on west side road in forestville, a mudslide in that location. this is west of santa rosa off of highway 16. the slide was blocking one of the lanes, as crews worked to clear that debris into the early morning. just kind of a weird scenario that we have. we had that huge windstorm, lightning strikes overnight. right now, it's calm. i can see the blue skies above. but as cinthia mentioned, take advantage of that. come out and get your sandbags and prepare for the next one that's on the way. back to you in the studio. >> thank goodness for this break. damian, thanks for informing us of what's going on out there so our viewers can stay safe inside. another reminder of how dangerous these gusty winds and saturated grounds can be, several trees continue to topple down across the bay area, including this one that landed on a car in napa. a huge tree. firefighters say one person was
7:35 am
hurt. officials urging everyone to be aware of their surroundings during these extreme weather patterns. all across the bay area people lost power. around 1:30 this morning crews were in colma fixing a line. it was knocked down by a large tree branch and caused a large outage in that area. as you can see here, many pg&e customers still without power. here's a look at the live outage map. the orange symbols represent thousands still without power. currently pg&e is reporting more than 207,000 customers in the dark and cold. new video this morning of crews extracting a driver from a car after it crashes into a pole in the south bay. this happened in south san jose near almaden expressway and o'grady drive. when police responded, they
7:36 am
found the car wrapped around a pole, trapping one person inside. they were able to rescue that driver from the car and transport them to the hospital. no update on that driver's injuries. in the east bay, one man got away with his life after a tree fell on his home in castro valley. it happened on sandy road where the tree covered most of the house. we are told the family was inside the home. most of them made it out okay, but that man was trapped under the tree. firefighters pulled him out and paramedics rushed him to the hospital. >> my neighbor that lives on the other side of that creek took some pictures. it didn't break, it actually came out of the ground, out by the roots. >> another scary result of that saturated ground. the tree also took down that power line you saw there, which knocked out power to the entire neighborhood. according to pg&e's website, in just the last half hour, the power is still out affecting 60 customers. no word on when the power will
7:37 am
get back on. and yet again we are seeing dangerous driving conditions out there. a live look at some of our local bridges for you this morning. it looks like nice light traffic out there, hopefully enabling people to keep a safe distance. as we've been reporting, we are seeing trees fall on homes and cars, people being rescued from cars that have been submerged in water. the california highway patrol, get this, says yesterday at noon it had more than 1,000 calls in some way related to the weather. by midnight, those calls tripled. officials are urging everyone to slow down. unsafe speed is the most common cause of rain-related crashes. chp officer andrew barclay suggests not to drive at all unless completely necessary. and if you do ending up needing help, he advises everyone to take precautions until police arrive on scene. >> if you are in a location that it may not be safe to get out of your vehicle, our suggestion is
7:38 am
going to be stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on. >> officer barclay also says this fewer drivers on the road, emergency services can respond faster to accidents. as this next storm approaches, a reminder when you aren't home, you can always watch us on the go. we are streaming online and on our app. you can also find us on roku and apple tv. it is all free to download and stream. stream. it is 7:38 right

welcome back. our team coverage continues with "today in the bay's" damian trujillo. damian, as you mentioned, it's calm out there right now but it was pretty wild overnight. >> reporter: yeah, it kept my family awake for most of the night. it was really windy. we're surrounded by oak trees so it was windy and loud at our home. it caused a lot of damage all across the bay area. first over to forestville. forestville is just west of
7:41 am
santa rosa off highway 116. the wind toppled one tree here blocking the road. there's no word of when there might be a reopening of that road. and in mountain view, a scary moment for one driver. this is northbound 85. the driver said he was on the off-ramp when a large eucalyptus tree slammed on top of his car. the driver said he was shaken up but otherwise okay. rescue crews managed to pull the car out of the mess. then they went on to remove the tree from the middle of that off-ramp on 85. the driver said he e can't belie how w close of a a call thisis . >> it j just felell off r right on the car. and thehere was wayay i wasas a get away from that. as y you can sesee, t the resul. >> where were you traveling to? >> i was going home from my son's game. >> reporter: we can expect probably more of that fallen trees throughout today even though there's a break in the rain and especially with other
7:42 am
storms coming in. who knows more about that than cinthia pimentel back in the studio. cinthia, it's going to be a rough one the next couple of days. >> as you were saying the sun is starting to come out giving us a chance to assess some of that damage and giving us a break in the rain preparing for the next one. satellite and radar, we have been talking about that thunderstorm activity going on from the north bay, pushing on through into areas of sacramento. as we take a wider picture, here's what's in store for the second week of january. a parade of storms that are going to slam into the bay area. so we remain under this flood watch entire bay areawide through tuesday afternoon. those creeks, rivers and streams all a concern at this hour. not only that but the winds that will be howling ahead of the arrival of that storm. let's take it hour by hour to look at those wind gusts. all of that purple are wind gusts upwards of 40 to 50 miles an hour. over in the napa mountains, we can see 36-mile-an-hour winds at
7:43 am
4:30 tomorrow morning. they will subside as the day goes through but really along with the flood watch and the winds we could see trees come down, power poles, so those issues remain, which is why we remain under the microclimate weather alert to get you prepared. let's take it hour by hour. good conditions today to get out there, assess the damage, run those last-minute errands. but by the evening time that's really when we start to hunker down as that rain pushes on through. the monday morning commute, i'm going to be honest with you, doesn't look good. if you can tell your employer to let you work from home or maybe the kids, the school situation going on, it's going to be a lot of rain pounding the bay area from the north bay over santa rosa, napa, of course the east bay as well. all along the peninsula, which of course has gotten hit very hard the last couple of days and the santa cruz mountains. you can't see it there but there is a little pocket of orange. that is a lot of rainfall. we are expecting upwards of 6 inches of rain as the storm
7:44 am
system pushes on through. monday lunchtime also a lot of rain. by the evening hours we start to see a little better conditions before we get hit with more rain on tuesday, so it's a very active forecast we've got going on. not only here in the bay area but up in tahoe. this area of pink that stretches from tahoe into areas of yosemite is that winter storm warning we've been telling about lasting through wednesday morning. the snow piling up in feet over the next couple of days with upwards of more than 2 feet of snow plus in those upper elevations above 7,000 feet. gusts there also very strong. hazardous conditions. please don't drive there if you don't have to. snowpack, though, this is the silver lining in all of this. we are looking at a statewide average over 188%, so that's very good as the snow piles on through. it's helping us out with our local reservoirs as well. and in this graphic, the four largest reservoirs up here are shasta, orville, trinity lake and new melonas.

every inch, every raindrop helps our drought situation and there is definitely more rain on the way. look at this forecast, remaining very active. the storm for the middle of the week, however, is trending a little bit more towards the northern california coast so we just might be spared of that one, but more rain is ahead for next weekend. >> all right, that would be fortunate if it missed it. fortunate if it missed it. oh ms.s. flores, whatat would we e do withoutut? leader o of many, and d pet wranglgler too. oh ms.s. flores, whatat would we e do withoutut? yoyou report t to your boso, every y afternoon.n. so beaututiful. yoyou report t to your boso, every y afternoon.n. so becomining a studenent agn mighght seem impmpossible. yoyou report t to your boso, every y afternoon.n. hellllo, mi amoror. but t what if a a school could d be there f for all of ? careerer, family,, financeses and mentatal heal. well, , it can. nanational uniniversity. supportiting the whohole yo.

welcome back. the past few days we saw bakersfield's kevin mccarthy withstand a battering for 15 rounds before ultimately winning his fight for speaker of the house. what remains to be seen now is what mccarthy can achieve with his narrow victory. let's bring in nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston back in studio after so long. how did mccarthy do it? i sense there was a lot of compromise or you could see it. >> first happy new year.
7:48 am
>> happy new year. >> it's good to see you. >> you too. >> in the flesh. >> in the flesh. >> look, he had the support, mccarthy did, of most republicans. there are 222. it takes 218 to win. that's just one more than half, the speakership. but he could only lose four votes. four votes because of that very narrow republican majority. so that was blocking his road to victory, particularly 20 members. 20 members, hard core if you will, from the freedom caucus, a very conservative group. his challenge was to win them over. >> so my question is those members he needed to win over were largely aligned with former president trump. >> yes. >> why did they oppose mccarthy? because he was trump's choice. >> can you believe, not conservative enough. not conservative enough on issues such as the national debt, which is always a big problem because it has to be raised every once in a while. the balancing of the budget, which is never done.
7:49 am
they wanted these things. we want to control the national debt, we want to control the budget so that it's balanced. we're worried about the way you send money frivolously to places like ukraine, this was the concern of these folks. and they of course wanted a smaller government. you put it altogether, what they're really calling for, kira, was a less powerful speaker. a less by separating all those bills. a less powerful speaker by making sure that each member had the right to speak up on virtually anything and call for a vote at any time to get rid of the speaker. >> and it appears that they succeeded in making him less powerful, arguably the least powerful speaker entering the speakership. those are major changes compared to what nancy pelosi conceded to when she was speaker of the house. so how did accommodate them and what kind of position does this put him in? >> he gave in to virtually all
7:50 am
of their demands. you know, gaetz, you saw him at one point was asked why are you holding out? i don't know, he said, he's given us everything we wanted. everything we wanted. they'll get seats, more seats on those critical committees. rules, ways and means, appropriations. those are the three committees that really control the house. those folks, those 20 members are going to get a disproportionate number of seats there. they'll have the ability to call for a vote on the speaker at any point they want. just one person saying i want to call a vote. it used to be two-thirds of the republican caucus. so you can imagine this guy is tiptoeing around. these bills nothing bundled. they don't know what they're in for really because it's going to be just about impossible to get anything done. it is going to be unbalanced and very, very unstable. so you can look at and expect a very chaotic speakership, which means a very chaotic house of representatives for the next two years. >> and hypothetically, someone
7:51 am
could wake up tomorrow and say i want a vote. >> yeah. >> let's just hope that doesn't happen. groundhog day yet again. larry, as always, thanks for your insight. great to see you in the flesh. >> good to see you. 7:50 right now. up next, a quick look at the top stories we're following, including the widespread damage and power outages across the bay area. overnight high winds knocking down trees. we'll show you more after this. and we are seeing from our live camera over in dublin the skies opening up to a day filled with that break in the rain. we're going to track the storms that are coming ahead. more atmospheric rivers as we go into the second week of january.

these storms. first, healdsburg on bianca lane, a power pole appears to be split in half. radio traffic suggests that it was a possible lightning strike. the area was without power after that strike. and then another possible lightning strike. the battalion chief there said lightning may have struck a transformer, but luckily there are no reports of injuries with either incident. that meant of course power outages. in san mateo county just after midnight a large branch came down on a garage and on top of two cars. this is on birch street in mon tara. pg&e crews were this to assess the damage. in mountain view, a scary moment for one driver on northbound 85. the driver was on the off-ramp when a large eucalyptus tree slammed on top of his car. the driver said he was shaken up, but otherwise okay. rescue crews managed to pull the car out of the mess and then they went on to remove the tree from the middle of the off-ramp. back at the sandbag location in

san jose, they are going to replenish these pallets and make sure there's enough for anybody who might need them now that there's a break in the rain so they can prepare for the upcoming storms. back to you. >> thanks for being out there for your viewers and glad david was able to pick up some sandbags. all across the bay area as damian just showed us, people are experiencing power outages. around 1:30 this morning pg&e crews were fixing this downed power line pole after it was knocked down by large tree branches that caused a big outage for colma. here's a last look at the pg&e outage map. right now pg&e is reporting more than 207,000 customers in the dark. before we go, cinthia has one last look at the forecast. as you've been telling us, take advantage of this break today. >> yeah. taking advantage of the break in the rain, enjoying the sunshine. there are some times where we have to talk about, you know, some positive things going on. i'm going to show you the 49ers

forecast because it looks like they are in luck for kickoff. 1:25 against the cardinals. i've been hearing something that they're doing pretty good, so today's forecast looks pretty good for them out there. no concerns of a soggy field. but notice as the evening hours go on, we see that cloud cover return. temperatures in the 60s and those wind gusts starting to pick up very lightly, though, around 14 to 15 miles an hour. so good luck to you there. as we take it on to the seven-day forecast, back to business, here we go. monday's storm not only rain and 2 to 4 inches of rain that's in the forecast, but those gusty winds lingering on into tuesday. wednesday, thursday could be another chance that we see a break in the rain. more ahead for next weekend. so it's an on-and-off pattern as we go through the next couple of days. >> hopefully we continue to get little breaks like this one today. cinthia, thanks. and thanks so much to you for making us a part of your sunday morning. no 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. news.
