right now on nbc bay area of the windy weather literally sparking issues, bringing down trees and power lines, leaving thousands in the dark. we bring you up to date as we brace for the next round of rain. >> rob has the updated timeline and when the brunt of that storm is going to hit.

thanks for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm gia vang. another storm is moving in right now. >> let's take a look outside at our network of traffic cameras. the roads already wet in some spots. looks like san jose, golden gate bridge. you can see how hard the rain came down this morning in the east bay. more flooding, strong winds bending trees. >> we have team coverage. we want to get straight to rob mayeda. when is the worst going to hit? >> the peak wind and rain likely to arrive late to midmorning around the bay. high wind warnings through 10:00 a.m. at least. heavy rain at times. up to a half foot of rain could come down around the santa cruz mountains, as we move into your monday. let's take a look at the wind speeds, notice these wind speeds by 4:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.

40-to-60 miles per hour. we have soaking rain starting to come through the bay area now. progression time. early in the morning it boosts the rain rates. by 9:00 a.m., into the east bay, these locations we'll be watching creek and river levels rising. we'll probably get into minor flooding as early as mid to late morning. the san lorenzo river at felton, the flood stage expected to be major, 22.3 feet by monday afternoon. coming up we'll take a closer look at when that heaviest rain

arrives hour by hour, and how many more storms we could see in the forecast. >> wow. niles canyon road is closed again tonight after reports of a landslide blocking all east and westbound lanes, highway 84 between fremont and pleasanton. we've seen this several times over the past few weeks. you see the road closure signs out. no word on when it will be reopening. >> take a look at this list. the office of education is closing these schools because of the storm's impact. schools within the districts on your screen will be completely closed tomorrow and tuesday, meaning no in-person or virtual classes. parents of students in districts not listed here should assume that school is still open tomorrow. governor newsom is asking for help from the federal government ahead of this next powerful storm. it came during an emergency services conference today.

agencies gave updates on how they are ready to respond. the governor called flooding even more dangerous than wildfires. >> these floods are deadly and have now turned to be more deadly than even the wildfires here in the state of california. common sense, just be cautious over the course of the next week and particularly the next day or two. >> 35 million californians are under new flood alerts across the state of the and we are keeping a close eye on creeks and streams across the bay area that have the potential to flood. >> outreach groups are trying to get unhoused people to safety. people are bracing for the downpour. >> reporter: residents have been rushing to sandbag pickup sites like this one all throughout the day to bring to their hopes in hopes of protecting against the storm.

officials say they also concerned about those people who do not have homes. it's the vulnerable to water spreading from the creeks. at the guadalupe river, lots of water and eroded soil is coursing through the san jose waterway. it could bring water to homes and businesses in the area. at coyote creek there are similar concerns, the water expected to reach flood stage. further along the creek in milpitas where the water passes under 237, there's forecasted flooding, too. >> we have to get out because we're going to get flooded. >> reporter: that's why josh is packing up his dog and moving out of the encampment where he's lived for five months. josh's friend showed up to help him pack as many of his belongings as they can carry. >> there's so many more that

need the help. >> reporter: josh says he's going to stay at a hotel room paid for by the county for a few days. >> it's been a long time. and i'm tired. i can't do it no more. >> reporter: and the city of milpitas tells us they've actually been using drones to reach unhoused people along the creeks and warn them about the oncoming flooding using the auditory feature. alyssa goard, nbc bay area news. earlier today, concord was hit hard. trees blew into wires causing explosions. this explosion happened on concord boulevard near glazier

drive. in pacifica, a road is open after a power pole was downed there. >> let's show you the current pg&e outage map. we got an update about ten minutes ago. right now about 7,000 customers are in the dark. >> with storm after storm some people in the bay area are in a cycle. a break in the rain means a chance to clean up and get ready for the next powerful storm. christie smith spoke to people hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. >> reporter: in palo alto, residents came out on a dry sunday to fill up sandbags. >> muddy. i have plastic tarping on the doors and sandbags. >> reporter: this neighbor told us she has sandbags and boards at her mace near the san francis key toe creek. she added more this week and is filling up extras so they're

ready to go for those who may not find it easy to fill up the bags. >> buckets are a lot easier to use when you're by yourself. >> reporter: neighbors say it looks like branches and fallen tree limbs have been pulled from the creek. many are taking precautions but there is still concern as the next round of rain moves in. >> we have to be somewhat concerned. we can't be oh, we're going to be fine. >> reporter: the city posted online saying the risk is low today but people should prepare now for this storm and possible future flood conditions. >> i come out. the water is almost to reach my doorstep. it's like about one foot deep already. so this look like lake. >> reporter: in menlo park, li was still moving mud from his property on new year's eve. soon after, sandbags went up by his garage and he's optimistic.

>> we shouldn't have any flood here. we shouldn't. i just want to make sure that's the case. >> reporter: christy smith, nbc bay area news. >> we're staying on top of all the issues related to the storm including school closures, evacuation orders and road closures. oakland police are investigating a homicide that may have been a robbery gone wrong. happened about 10:30 this morning on adeline street. initially, officers were called about a robbery. they got to the scene, found a man who was injured. it's not clear what his injures were, but he died at the scene. the man's identity is not being released. that's all we've got from the police so far. it is a landmark in oakland and on its last legs. we're talking about the recreation center at lincoln square park in the city's chinatown. there's an effort under way to revitalize it to benefit the communitity. a smalall part of that help c c

reporting. former police spokesman turned supervisor matt dorsey was sworn in today. he was appointed in may and replaced matt haney, who was elected to the assembly. but in november, voters chose to keep him on the board. dorsey pledged to do more to combat the opioid crisis. he cited a report saying that officers took nearly 66 key kilos off the street last year. >> it's enough to kill every adult in california. we are really up against it. we have a priority to get these drugs off our street. hold drug dealers accountable but also make sure we're doing everything we can to innocent

inincentivize okay. would you listen to that? right, that is the sound of strong winds in the sierra. it was recorded at the top of the round house ski lift earlier today. the winds were so strong in the sacramento area an amazon truck tipped over on the freeway. this is on i-5 near the sacramento airport. winds were gusting near 70 miles per hour there. los gatos creek in san jose overflowed onto parts of a walking trail. it happened earlier today. even though the trail looks like a lake, people were still out walking in the areas that weren't so bad. at other parks, the storm damage is not as avoidable. muir woods closed today so park rangers could assess storm

damage there. quite the show in the sky. this is video of lightning strikes from two of our traffic cameras in san francisco. in sonoma county, a power pole in healdsburg was split in half. lightning may have struck a transformer. >> and, as we speak, there's another storm, the sheep rescued right there. i just saw it at the end. as we speak, another storm rolling on through. >> that's thing about the jet stream, fast-moving storms about every 18 hours. the rain held off, but not the case now. it's going to pick up in intensity once again tonight into tomorrow morning's commute. the one-two punch of gusty winds. not too windy yet, but look at the temperatures.

warm. 55 in san francisco. mid 50s in san rafael. the rain falling by the camera lens there. 58 in dublin. if you need any signs that we have an atmospheric river moving into the bay areas nighttime temperatures in the upper 50s and winds out of the southeast at 15. wind speeds for now starting to pick up out of the southeast. the same direction as these winds accelerate tomorrow morning. tomorrow morning we're looking at 40-60 miles per hour wind gusts. probably 8:00 a.m. will be the peak of the wind. as we move into the afternoon wind speeds do start to come down as the rain transitions out. this is the first wave lifting out of the north. notice the plume of moisture stretching from the bay back north of hawaii, the atmospheric river connection coming together over the bay area. area of low pressure off shore, and that really helps to strengthen these incoming storms, as they strengthen right off the coast, that also helps

to crank up the wind, too. we'll be seeing that as we head towards the morning. one trend we should see after sun rise is some of that heavier rain transitioning out of the north bay. notice how it hangs up over the santa cruz mountains in the south bay with these forecast updates potentially into the afternoon. that will continue to enhance the runoff and flood potential. by 7:00 the rain line should push off toward the east. the trend will be heavy winds, gusty winds and high rain rates. around noon the rain starts to move south and toward the the evening, as we saw in the future cast, once we get to 5:00 the rain should push away from the bay area. but tuesday, get ready for another round. the rain totals over the next two days could be as high as two to five inches over the coastal mountains and more storms out there. wednesday, mainly for the north bay. thursday and friday we

right now at 9:30. high winds, more rain and the continued chance of flooding. we're tracking it all tonight including school closures in place because of the storm. welcome back to this special edition of nbc bay area news. i'm gia vang. >> i'm terry mcsweeney. we are tracking a round of storms that will make your commute wet and windy. >> we had a bit of a break earlier, but the rain is set to continue through the week. >> let's get an update from rob mayeda. >> the flood watches continue through tuesday 4:00. but tonight it's a high wind warning that went into effect at 8:00 this evening. the potential is certainly there for at least half a foot or more of rainfall across the santa cruz mountains as we head toward tomorrow. notice the peak wind gusts, sustained winds 20-35 miles per hour, but gusts from 40-60

across the bay area, as high as 80 miles per hour in the hills above 1,000 feet. you have been noticing on the radar and the app, the rain is back and moving through basically from the south, lifting northward. this is the trend as we head through the morning. and by 9:00 a.m. we begin to see the heavier rain band slowly shift to the south over the santa cruz mountains. as early as late morning the creeks and streams and rivers, including the guadalupe river, will start to reached into stage as early as 9:00 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. in the morning, cresting by 3:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon. the san lorenzo river expected to reach major flood stage. up in pleasanton, that's been lowered slightly. still coming to flood stage by mid afternoon. russian river at guerneville

expected to rise up toward flood stage. and the napa river in downtown napa, about a foot and a half below flood stage. we'll be watching that closely if the rain line chains a bit monday evening. heavy rain at times, and another storm arriving as we get into tuesday could also increase thunderstorms over the bay area as well. we'll have a closer look at that hour by hour in our forecast in a few minutes. >> several sonoma county school districts will be closed tomorrow and tuesday because of what's coming in. that means no in-person or virtual classes for students in the districts you see in your screen there. parents of students and districts not listed there should assume school is still open tomorrow. >> we're staying on top of all the issues related to the storm. that includes school closures, evacuation orders, power outages, road closures as well. we're posting updates on nbcbayarea.com. president biden visited the

u.s.-mexico border for the first time as president today. he was in el paso, assessing border enforcement. this comes as the biden administration has tightened restrictions on asylum seekers. he is headed to mexico city and will join leaders for the north american leaders summit tomorrow and tuesday. next generation school safety. a north texas school district is the first in the nation to use new technology to protect students and staff against active shooters. meredith yeomans shows us how the security system works. >> reporter: it is a sound teachers never want to hear in school. >> it gives me goose bumps to think about it. >> reporter: but it's one andie clark knows she needs to prepare for. >> what do i need to do if that becomes a reality, if that becomes my reality and i have a classroom of 35 babies of other

people in here. >> you have a green light here, a green light here. >> reporter: brad merritt explained how the system works. gunfire activates acoustic sensors installed in ceilings that light up and direct people away from an attacker. when a shooting happens, sensors turn rid or green. red would mean you don't want to go that way. the shooter has been detected in that direction. green indicate a pathway to safety. strobe lights lead law enforcement to the shooter. then streamed to track their movement. >> if someone has evil in their heart so bad that they want to come into a school to do this, they're going to find a way to do it. that's where this system comes into play. >> reporter: between the new technology and arming some teachers. >> we've taken every precaution that we can possibly take. >> reporter: precautions providing peace of mind for

we living here in california know wildfires, but they're not just a problem here in our state. across the country the u.s. averages around 70,000 wildfires each year. teams of wild land firefighters are ready to take on the next wildfire, 80% are men. however, there's a movement to bring more women into the field. keith kaczynski has the story. >> reporter: driving through oregon, a small town of about 30 people. and it's known for its rv

park-motel-restaurant. and of course a bunch of cattle in open spaces. it's also home to the women in wild land fire boot camp, which brings dozens of women and even some men together to learn more about wild land firefighting and we're about to check it out. oregon ranks third nationwide behind idaho and california when it comes to arm acres burned each year. it's dry, and the threat of fire seems to be on everyone's mind out here. the students are from all over the country. it's one of the handful of programs like this nationwide promoting wild land firefighting to women. what do you think the reputation of a wild land firefighter is by the public? >> i think they think of burley mountain men out there. but commercials and media continue to ex-sued that in our culture. and that's another reason i do

this is at the base area of the palisades, coming down right now. no doubt about it. it keeps piling up out there. these conditions are every skier's dream if can you get there. but over in new york a very different story. central new york is in a warm spell. so warm the snow is melting and too warm for resorts to make snow. that's a bad situation to be in. temperatures need to be in the 20s to do that. in fayetteville they say they've never seen a thaw like this one. >> we tried to see if we could send them someplace else, but at this point, i don't think even in watertown there's much snow left. >> others are enjoying the warm winter weather and making the most of it, but away from the ski hills. >> rob mayeda is here. you've been a busy person for the last couple weeks, really.

what are we seeing right now >> right now rain from the next storm dropping in and wind speeds starting to pick up. as we move to midnight, we'll see the winds accelerating. based on the forecas, it might and work from home morning if you can afford to do so. it's warm in san jose, southeast wind at 15 miles per hour. wind speeds starting to pick up. but they'll really pick up after midnight tonight. you could see 40 to 50 mile-per-hour gusts getting started from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. and toward late morning, wind speeds come down. high wind warning up through 10:00 tomorrow morning. so the rain filling in across the bay area right now. you're seeing it there around the east bay and tri valley. starting to lift north of the santa cruz mountains. we got more rain coming on in. look at that more plume.

that's going to slam into the coastal mountains and really power up the big rain rates at times as we head throughout first half of monday. see how the north bay sees the heaviest rain by 6:00 a.m. by 8:00 a.m. the rain line starts to slow down as it heads to the south bay. a lot of the flooding concerns have shifted toward the santa cruz mountains and south bay as the rain holds on. early afternoon now before scooting out toward the evening hours. the trend tomorrow, heavy rain, gusty winds at times. it will take us probably now through at least midday. and then toward 3:00, rain starts to exit the south bay. and another round comes in tuesday. while not as widespread, this has potential for thunderstorms, which brings the damaging winds, the chance of hail at times, part of the tuesday forecast. as we add up 48 hours of rainfall. areas in the santa cruz mountains, once it changes to

the gray and white could be a half foot of rain. high totals here across the north bay mountains. for the second half of the week we should seat north bay seeing most of the rain early wednesday, thursday into friday. we may catch a little bit of a break. as we head toward next weekend, there it is. more rain in the forecast. still all the way across the seven-day forecast there. obviously the biggest storm of the week is coming in right now. that's going to impact us into tuesday with the higher chance of potentially strong thunderstorms on tuesday. we'll have to watch that. second half of the week, friday it calms down a little bit, but more wind and rain as we head toward next saturday. >> gia and i were pay ago little bit more attention to your forecast than usual because we'll be driving home shortly u. shortly. >> thank you. how about the niners?
